He praised Tata’s role in steering one of India’s most respected business groups and acknowledged how his contributions extended far beyond the corporate world. “He provided stable leadership to one of India’s oldest and most prestigious business houses. At the same time, his contribution went far beyond the boardroom. He endeared himself to many through his humility, kindness, and unwavering commitment to improving society,” Modi added. Om Shanti.” Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with the industrialist, PM Modi reminisced about their frequent meetings during his time as Chief Minister of Gujarat, describing the exchanges as enriching. “My mind is filled with countless interactions with Shri Ratan Tata Ji. I would meet him frequently in Gujarat when I was the CM. We would exchange views on diverse issues. These interactions continued when I came to Delhi.” In his tribute, Modi highlighted Tata’s passion for championing social causes. “One of the most unique aspects of Shri Ratan Tata Ji was his passion for dreaming big and giving back. After all, when you have given your heart and soul to an organisation, it is never easy accepting the fact that you are being asked to leave at a moment’s notice. The situation becomes even more complicated when you have been with the company for more than a decade. Something similar happened with <keyword id="23300967" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nicholas-Whitaker" source="keywords">Nicholas Whitaker</keyword>, who had been working with the company since 2010 and found out about his <keyword id="20118388" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="layoff" source="keywords">layoff</keyword> abruptly. <h2>The 3 am email bringing bad news</h2>“My layoff experience was traumatic. I got an email at 3 am to my personal email, that I only found because a colleague pinged me on Linkedin in the DMs to ask if I was ‘Ok’ and if I was ‘safe’,” Whitaker told <keyword id="21390875" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider-India" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Business Insider India" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Business Insider India">Business Insider India</keyword> in a conversation. He added that when his colleague enquired about his safety, he thought it was a “shooting or some natural disaster.” In other words, he didn’t even imagine that he was being laid off from Google. He then revealed that when he checked his work email, he discovered that he was locked out of his laptop and phone. He then checked his personal email and there it was, the “short and impersonal email” that told him that his role at Google was being eliminated. <h2>The layoff process was uncomfortable</h2>When Google announced large-scale layoffs last year, the company made a lot of headlines for handling them in an unprofessional manner. In March 2023, several Google employees had even written an open letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, asking him to deal with layoffs in a better manner. Whitaker, narrating his own experience, shared with Business Insider India that after receiving the dreadful layoff email at 3 am, he spent the next few months completing formalities to get his payments that were due. He said, “It took all of the next several months for me to mail back my laptop, badge and any gear that I had that was Google property. (I also had to) navigate unemployment, health insurance and get all of the documentation I had to submit to "self Offboard" and to receive payments that I was supposed to get.” “Along the way there were multiple errors and miscommunications from the team that made it all even more uncomfortable,” he said. Whitaker also noted a complete lack of communication and empathy from his old team at Google. “I got a single text message from my prior manager asking how I was doing a few days after I was laid off, but otherwise no one reached out to check on me or offer assistance from my old team. Overall I found the process to be brutally impersonal and inhumane,” he said. <h2>Experience at Google</h2>But was Google always “inhumane” in his experience? Not really. There were some amazing days too and Google, according to Whitaker, was a different company when he had joined. “My initial experience working at Google was like it was a completely different company. I started as a temp, contractor and then a vendor for Google back in 2010, and at the time I think it was something like 40,000 employees. It had a real startup feel to it. Teams were agile and collaborative, and there was a lot of room for growth. It may have been specific to my team and org, but it felt like you had a lot more room for experimentation and autonomy to make decisions, and failure wasn't seen as a bad thing, but a necessary part of innovation,” he said. Whitaker also said that a “class system” was there at Google, especially since he was a TVC (Temporary, Vendor and Contractor). “As a TVC you wouldn't be included in many of the activities and learning opportunities that full time employees had, and didn't get invited to extracurricular activities. There was a real bias towards culture at the time, and words like Don't be Evil, and be Googly were often used.” However, in general, he added that the atmosphere was positive and full of possibilities. “Colleagues generally were very supportive, collaborative and encouraging to work with. I was excited as this was my first time working in big tech, or Corporate America and I saw that period of time as a real coming of age for me. I learned how to be a professional at Google and appreciated all of the early guidance and support that I got from colleagues and leaders.” <h2>Helping others</h2>It has now been over a year since Whitaker was laid off. He now has his own venture and helps other people navigate their careers. Talking about what motivated him to kick-start his own venture, he said, “After 13 years in big tech, the last few years in particular being particularly difficult due to toxic teams and leaders, I didn't want to jump right back into that kind of experience again. A year before getting laid off, I had experienced a bad <keyword id="19956983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mental-health" source="keywords">mental health</keyword> crisis that was the result of workplace bullying, gaslighting and toxic leadership. "I wanted to help others avoid and recover from similar situations and create a community where people can find mutual support and coaching on how to best navigate their careers in a conscious way. My severance after working so long at Google allowed me to fund the launch of my coaching business, and eventually ‘changingwork.org’." <keyword id="23300968" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Changing-Work" source="keywords">Changing Work</keyword>, Whitaker explained, is his way of addressing a deep need in corporate life — helping people rediscover their sense of purpose and alignment in their careers and finding ways to build more conscious leaders and businesses. He added, “What makes this so transformative for me personally is that it allowed me to step into a role where I could integrate all the lessons from my own career—especially the parts that were hardest for me. During my time at Google, I saw firsthand how high-pressure environments can lead to burnout, anxiety, and a disconnect from our true selves.” The recent tragic death of a young CA at Ernst &amp; Young (EY) employee in India has turned the spotlight on toxic work cultures prevalent in many high-pressure industries. Broader debates on burnout, mental health struggles, and unrealistic expectations in corporate environments in the workplace have occupied social media platforms. Instead, the sector is making a bold bet on AI and skilled talent to fuel its resurgence. With significant investments underway, industry leaders are confident that these efforts will show results within the next 3-5 years. “All of us are investing. And, the ROI will start coming in the next 3-5 years,” Harita Gupta, Head of Global Experience, SVP Global Business Operations Solutions and Support at Sutherland and the chairperson of <keyword id="19955786" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasscom" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Nasscom" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Nasscom">Nasscom</keyword> BPM Council. She shared these insights during a panel discussion on “Data, Technology, Skill and Customers – The New Value Levers for BPM in India,” hosted by Business Insider India. In its second innings, the BPM industry has shifted its focus to Tier-II and Tier-III cities, which offer a wealth of talent, lower operational costs and more accommodative regulations. “The industry has started to take jobs to where the talent is rather than the other way around,” remarked Sapna Bhambani, the Senior VP of Operations and Geo Leader at TaskUs. She highlighted that over half of TaskUs’ business is now based out of Tier-II cities with Indore and Mohali leading the way. “The states where the government is extending a helping hand are the most successful emerging hubs,” Bhambani added. Nasscom too is keen on Tier-II and Tier-III cities for the expansion of the BPM industry, identifying Lucknow, Kanpur, Coimbatore, Trichy, Indore, Bhopal, Vizag and Vijayawada as notable emerging hubs. Gupta emphasised that the industry body will be working hand-in-hand with the universities and institutions in the area to build talent pipelines and garner support. And hiring from Tier-II cities is not just about tapping into new talent pools; it’s also improving employee retention, which has been a pain point for the industry in recent years. Tech Mahindra has tried to counter this by hiring for non-frontline roles from within the company, rather than hiring new talent. However, as Venkatesh Korla, the CEO of Americas at Hinduja Global Solutions (HGS) pointed out, a cultural shift is still needed to rebrand BPM jobs. “It’s changing. It’s not 100 percent there yet… They’ve realised there’s a lot more stickiness and a lot more opportunity in the BPM space, and we see talent also want to take on these jobs,” Korla explained. <h2>Creating new markets</h2>Most AI processes are trained using large language models (LLMs). Many, GPT-Neo and BERT, are open-source, which means they’re free for anyone to use. However, enterprises are looking to build their own LLMs in-house to train their AI products primarily to maintain control over proprietary data – a move that opens up new opportunities for BPM firms. “Large SAS companies want to integrate their own LLM in their products and they require the same BPM services to actually train their models. That’s a huge opportunity,” Birendra Sen, the President of Business Process Services at Tech Mahindra, told Business Insider. <h2>The need for experimentation</h2>While the use of Gen-AI in the BPM industry is widespread, many initiatives are still in the Proof of Concept (POC) stage. This implies that while there is investment, both in terms of money and manpower, directed at creating more Gen-AI led solutions, they may not necessarily succeed. “If something fails, we just fail fast and move,” Gupta told Business Insider. Moreover, leaders like Venkatesh Korla view AI as a transformative tool that complements human expertise rather than replacing it. “AI is going to help in coaching, compliance, and in quality control. I call this the Iron Man's suit or the J.A.R.V.I.S. for Iron Man because it never replaces the human inside the suit. So, that's really how we need to look at it,” Korla remarked. India’s BPM sector has demonstrated resilience and adaptability in the face of previous challenges, such as the rise of automation and the shift towards digital services. It is now poised to reinvent itself, this time by integrating AI with human expertise and expanding into new talent hubs. With a strong focus on innovation and upskilling, industry leaders are optimistic about the future, anticipating that these strategic moves will secure India’s position as a global leader in the BPM landscape over the next few years. The best environments for intrapreneurship are those that embrace failure as part of the learning process. Companies like Intel and Tesla have thrived by viewing setbacks as growth opportunities. Facebook’s famous "hackathons" foster cross-departmental innovation. These 24-hour events allow employees to work on passion projects outside of their usual responsibilities, resulting in successful product features like the "Like" button. The melding of expertise has led to breakthroughs that might not have been possible within traditional silos. <h2>Intrapreneurship: Driving growth from within</h2>Innovation is more than generating ideas—it’s about bringing those ideas to life. Intrapreneurship provides a framework for turning creative concepts into reality. Just as Prometheus defied convention to give humanity the gift of fire, intrapreneurs challenge the status quo to drive progress within their organisations. By fostering a culture of risk-taking, collaboration, and continuous learning, companies can ignite the innovation that fuels long-term growth. Continuous support in the form of funding, mentorship, and resources is crucial for intrapreneurship to thrive. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Russian President Vladimir Putin is meeting leaders from China, India, Vietnam, and Indonesia amid heavy sanctions.</li><li>Russia seeks to end diplomatic isolation by engaging with "swing nations" beyond autocratic allies.</li></ul>Russian President Vladimir Putin is having a very social year as his country continues to wage war in Ukraine.So far, Putin has met top leaders from Asian countries including <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/putin-bromance-xi-jinping-display-china-remains-wary-russia-2024-5">China,</a> <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-economy-india-modi-putin-hug-west-isolation-big-blow-2024-7">India,</a> <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vietnam-russia-putin-visit-us-wary-manufacturing-supply-chain-diplomacy-2024-6">Vietnam,</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/74678">Indonesia.</a> That's plenty of publicity for a heavily sanctioned individual from a country facing sweeping trade restrictions.And there's a strategic reason for all those meetings, Sean McFate, an adjunct professor at the Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, told Business Insider.Russia is trying to emerge from diplomatic isolation and is looking to forge strategic relationships beyond autocratic partners like China, North Korea, and Iran, McFate said."Putin is eyeing strategic swing nations like India, which opposes China and trades with Russia," he added. "That gives Russia some advantage over China, as their relationship has chilled somewhat."On Wednesday, Putin rubbed shoulders with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bernama.com/en/news.php?id=2336886">Malaysian Prime Minister</a> Anwar Ibrahim in Russia. The two countries were set to discuss a range of issues, including trade and investment.This meeting came on the heels of Putin's trip to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mongolia-explained-oil-why-didnt-arrest-putin-2024-9">Mongolia,</a> where he met President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh.Mongolia, as a member of the International Criminal Court, should have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/putin-visiting-mongolia-icc-arrest-warrant-could-arrest-unlikely-expert-2024-8">arrested Putin,</a> who has an ICC arrest warrant against him.But the East Asian nation said it couldn't throw Putin in jail because it depends on Russia — an oil and gas giant — for its energy security."This supply is critical to ensure our existence and that of our people," a Mongolian government spokesperson told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.politico.eu/article/mongolia-failure-arrest-vladimir-putin-international-warrant-international-criminal-court/">Politico.</a><h2 id="f0d1f4e5-36a9-4e82-ba4c-d30ab06a9d6a">It's about neutrality — and the economy</h2>Mongolia's explanation underscores the scale of Russia's economy. It's the 11th largest in the world and has an annual GDP of about $2 trillion, according to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.MKTP.CD?most_recent_value_desc=true">World Bank.</a>While Russia's economy pales in comparison to the US' $27.4 trillion GDP, Russia is still an important partner for many developing economies.In particular, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=709&amp;t=6.">Russia</a> accounts for about one-tenth of the world's oil production, making it an important resource supplier.Before its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia's single largest trading partner was the European Union.In the last two years, Russia has managed to pivot to supplying <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-economy-divert-oil-exports-europe-india-china-circumvent-sanctions-2023-12">China and India,</a> as well as nearly anyone who wants to buy discounted energy, be it <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/sri-lanka-source-crude-oil-imports-russia-sanctions-fuel-shortage-2022-10">Sri Lanka</a> when it was in an economic meltdown just two years ago or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/turkey-saves-2-bln-russian-oil-imports-soar-despite-sanctions-2023-12-18/">Turkey</a> — a NATO member and aspiring EU member.While some countries, like China and Vietnam, have historical ties with Russia, others, like India and Sri Lanka, have also cited economic self-interest for their ongoing relationship with Russia — particularly if they're in difficult conditions themselves. Most, if not all of them, have also taken a neutral position on the war in Ukraine.Serik Zhumangarin, Kazakhstan's deputy prime minister, told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-08-16/kazakhstan-will-not-blindly-follow-sanctions-on-russia-official-says">Bloomberg</a> last month that the country would no longer "blindly follow the sanctions" if the restrictions impact the country's key companies. Russia was Kazakhstan's largest trade partner before the war started.He told the media outlet that some of the sanctions against Moscow had hurt Kazakhstan more than Russia, and the West has done nothing to compensate the Central Asian nation.Using the economy to explain cozy diplomatic relationships with Russia appears to be gaining favor now that the Ukraine war is in its 31st month.After all, Russia is a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-resilience-sanctions-costly-unattainable-isolate-large-globally-integrated-economy-2024-2">large and globally integrated economy</a> that even the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-economy-lng-natural-gas-exports-europe-price-asia-2024-8">European Union</a> is still trying to decouple from.Even China, which in 2022 declared its friendship with Russia as a partnership with "no limits," now appears to be more keen on presenting the relationship in more pragmatic, businesslike terms.Just last month, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.fmprc.gov.cn/chn/gxh/tyb/zyxw/202408/t20240821_11477597.html">China framed</a> Vice Premier Li Qiang's visit to Russia as one that seeks "complementary advantages and huge potential for practical cooperation" between Moscow and Beijing.<h2 id="1d83462f-51a7-4e76-82db-0f7f3244cb44">Russia is wooing the Global South</h2>Partnering with Russia on economic terms is unlikely to alarm the US and Europe, even if there are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.state.gov/briefings/department-press-briefing-july-8-2024/">concerns</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/us-rebukes-vietnam-ahead-expected-visit-by-russias-putin-2024-06-17/">strong criticism.</a>"Russia's foreign policy blitz is unlikely to be a threat to the EU and NATO," Syracuse University's McFate said.That's because Moscow is not making military alliances with partner countries to attack Europe, which views Russia as its top threat, he said. For the US, Russia is a distant second after China.Even so, there still may be changes afoot.Moscow is pushing a narrative of the Global South as a force in shaping an alternative world order, with the emerging nations of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/brics-summit-countries-interested-brazil-russia-india-china-south-africa-2023-8">BRICS</a> — anchored by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa — forming an economic bloc.Russia is the BRICS chair this year, and Putin has invited Mongolia to join the group's summit in October. Malaysia applied to join the group, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://en.antaranews.com/amp/news/324871/joining-brics-based-on-president-elect-prabowos-decision-minister">Indonesia</a> is also considering an invitation to join the bloc. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/no-concrete-step-turkey-brics-membership-erdogans-party-says-2024-09-03/">Turkey</a> has also said it's interested in joining the group. "Indonesia, Malaysia, and Mongolia are an interesting test of those nations' 'neutrality' toward China, the US, international law (e.g., ICC), and the authority of the United Nations system," McFate said.Russia's push for a multipolar world order resonates with countries who desire a more equitable international order. And Moscow has shown it does have influence over lower- and middle-income countries, as evidenced by the non-participation or low-level participation of some Asian countries in June's Ukraine peace summit in Switzerland, Derek Grossman, a senior defense analyst at RAND, a think tank, wrote in a July <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.rand.org/pubs/commentary/2024/07/russia-is-a-strategic-spoiler-in-the-indo-pacific.html">commentary</a> for Foreign Policy."While Russia's sway is not at the level of China's or the United States', it is certainly enough to promote its anti-Western interests and disrupt the already precarious regional order," wrote Grossman.Countries around the world are weighing the dynamics."Regional allies will watch with interest to see if great powers can be played off each other," McFate said.

If investors support such businesses, and consumers pick such products, our carbon footprint can be lesser,” explains Bhumi. “Every day is Earth Day. This is our only home, there is no alternative, and there is no plan B! The way we show empathy and sympathy towards our loved ones, we should show empathy towards everybody else that we share this planet with. It really breaks my heart when you see on the news that a major city like Bangalore is still witnessing a water crisis and our capital city Delhi has winter days where schools are canceled because of the pollution.
