The trade route was closed rather suddenly after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019, forcing Indian traders to return from the <keyword id="22003706" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Taklakot-mart" source="keywords">Taklakot mart</keyword> in Tibet leaving behind their woollen products. Five years have passed but the route has not been opened, an organisation of border traders in Dharchula said. The traders who belong to the <keyword id="22005864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bhotia-tribe" source="keywords">Bhotia tribe</keyword> started to raise their demand for reopening of the trade route through Lipulekh after China recently began the process of implementing a pact, in which it had agreed to open all 14 trade passes with Nepal. The implementation of the agreement inked by China and Nepal in December, 2022 began on May 25 this year, when China opened Piangi pass situated in Dolpa district of eastern Nepal, president of Bharat Tibetan Simant Vyapar Samiti, Dharchula Jeewan Singh Rongkali said. Three more passes along the Indo-Tibet border in the western region of Nepal that fall in the districts of Humla, Bajang and Darchula will be opened on June 20, 30 and 25 respectively, he said. "We have so far sent 22 applications to the government of India requesting it to take up with the Chinese authorities the reopening of the trade route through Lipulekh pass but have received no response so far," Rongkali said. According to Rongkali, Indian tribal traders from Dharchula alone have left trading items worth Rs 15 lakh in <keyword id="22005865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="taklakot" source="keywords">Taklakot</keyword> Mart of Tibet at the time of closure of border trade in 2019, following the Covid-19 pandemic. "We have no information if our stored goods are safe or in a state of decay. They were stored in plywood covers at the time of closure of trade," Rongkali said. "We want trade with China to be resumed through Lipulekh pass but if for some reason it is not possible then the traders should be given 15 days' time to go to Taklakot to ring back their goods," he said. Goods of over 450 Indian tribal traders have been lying there for the last 5 years, he said. According to Rongkali, over 450 Indian traders used to supply essential goods to villagers of over 45 villages of western Tibet through this trade route since 1992. "Out of over 1.5 crore trade annually, we have paid lakhs of rupees towards customs duty and other taxes to the government of India," said Rongkali. China announced in the year 2022 that it will build trans Himalayan multi-dimensional connectivity with Nepal to restructure the road and communication network with that country, Rongkali said. "As China has not given permission to open our passes along the Indo-China border, we have an apprehension that the mart made for Indian traders in Gakkhu town of Taklakot could be handed over to Nepalese traders," said Rongkali.

A project in California's Salton Sea started construction earlier this year. The three sites, expected to come online between 2026 and 2028, would massively increase the US's lithium supply. Since the 1960s, only one site, Silver Peak, in Nevada, has operated in the country.The expansion is aimed at curbing China's control over the metals used in EV batteries and other renewable-energy technologies that countries need to decarbonize their economies. While most of the world's lithium is produced in Australia and South America, some two-thirds of it is processed in China, which also dominates EV-battery manufacturing. The US imports about 25% of its lithium supply from Chile and Argentina, but an analysis of federal data by the Atlantic Council found that it relied on China for about 70% of its lithium-ion batteries in 2023."If we're electrifying the transportation industry, you don't want to rely on any one country," Bernard Rowe, a managing director of Ioneer, which is developing Rhyolite Ridge, told Business Insider. He said there's no world in which the US and its partners can quickly compete with China on critical minerals; China already has so much capacity that it sets global prices."The question then is, can the US and other partner countries create a supply chain that meets their basic requirements," Friedhoff, who's part of a project exploring how the US, Japan, Australia, and India can cooperate to shift supply chains away from China. "Can we supply our own batteries? Can we build our own battery technologies? Scandals in China and Australia hit Big 4 giant PwC, but global revenues reached a record high

Cumulative advance tax collections were at ₹ 2.95 lakh crore till September 17 in 2022-23, a growth of 17 per cent over the corresponding period of last year, according to the data released by the <keyword id="47209" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="finance-ministry" source="Orion">Finance Ministry</keyword>. Refunds amounting to ₹ 1,35,556 crore were issued up to September 17, up by 83 per cent over last year. Fast processing of income tax returns (ITRs), with almost 93 per cent of duly verified ITRs were processed till Saturday. Faster issue of refunds were initiated, which saw an almost 468 per cent increase in the number of refunds issued in 2022-23, the statement said. One source at a Russian industrial firm told the news agency that Russian firms were also talking about the exchange of metals for Chinese machinery imports.Such arrangements are being discussed as trade between the two countries has become increasingly difficult amid tightening Western sanctions against Russia over its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.Recently, about 80% of bank transfers made in the Chinese yuan were <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-economy-china-yuan-payments-delay-months-bounce-back-sanctions-2024-7">bouncing back</a> with no explanation after being stalled for weeks while banks decide whether they could transact, Russian media outlet Kommersant reported last month.Before this year, Russia and its trade partners skirted sanctions by using smaller banks and other payment modes or non-US dollar currencies to circumvent the West's ban of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-eu-announce-some-russian-banks-removed-from-swift-2022-2">some Russian banks</a> from the widely used SWIFT messaging system.However, this strategy has been hitting snags since the US approved <a target="_blank" rel=" nofollow" href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-takes-aim-financial-institutions-with-new-russia-sanctions-authority-2023-12-22/">secondary sanctions</a> targeting financial institutions that were helping Russia. The announcement came on Monday as Jio revealed its quarterly results, showcasing staggering numbers and milestones achieved in various segments. As of March 2024, Jio boasts a subscriber base of 481.8 million, out of which 108 million subscribers are on Jio's True5G Standalone network. The number reflects Jio's stronghold in the Indian telecom market. According to a press release, the total traffic on the Jio network has reached 40.9 Exabytes, marking a 35.2 per cent year-on-year increase. This surge is attributed to the growing adoption of 5G and Home services. Notably, 28 per cent of the traffic comes from 5G subscribers, indicating a swift transition towards next-generation connectivity. Additionally, Jio's Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services have contributed significantly to the data traffic. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a dramatic 2.4x increase in annual data traffic, with per capita monthly data usage skyrocketing to 28.7 GB from just 13.3 GB three years ago. This surge underscores the growing reliance on digital connectivity in India. Commenting on the results, <keyword id="3820" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mukesh-Ambani" source="Orion">Mukesh Ambani</keyword>, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries Limited, expressed his satisfaction with the company's performance and its contribution to the Indian economy. He highlighted the significant achievements, including becoming the first Indian company to cross the Rs 100,000-crore threshold in pre-tax profits. Ambani emphasised, "Strong demand for fuels globally, and limited flexibility in refining system worldwide, supported margins and profitability of the O2C segment. Downstream chemical industry experienced increasingly challenging market conditions through the year." He added, "Despite headwinds, maintaining leading product positions and feedstock flexibility through our operating model that prioritises cost management, we delivered a resilient performance. The KG-D6 block has achieved 30 MMSCMD of production and now accounts for 30 per cent of India's domestic gas production." In terms of financial performance, Reliance Jio has achieved several remarkable milestones. The consolidated EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) at Rs 178,677 crore, while the consolidated Profit Before Tax (PBT) has surpassed Rs 100,000 crore. The company's market capitalization has crossed Rs 20,00,000 crore, further solidifying its position as one of India's most valuable companies. "The agency is investigating why Vivo India declared profit as expenditure in its balance sheet and transferred substantial sums of money to China," an official familiar with the matter told <a href="https://www.businesstoday.in/technology/news/story/exclusive-ed-probes-rs-62000-cr-fund-transfer-to-vivo-indias-chinese-parent-340713-2022-07-07">Business Today</a>. The money laundering case against Vivo was filed by the agency after taking cognizance of an FIR filed by the Economic Offenses Wing of the Delhi Police against a Vivo distributor based in Jammu and Kashmir. The report has claimed that Chinese shareholders of the company have used forged identity documents. India was among the 43 countries on its "honour roll" so far for having paid their assessments to the budget, <keyword id="2143550" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="stephane-dujarric" source="Orion">Stephane Dujarric</keyword>, the Spokesperson for Secretary-General <keyword id="300649" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="antonio-guterres" source="Orion">Antonio Guterres</keyword>, said on Monday. India's contribution was received on Friday according to the UN. India's share is assessed at 1.044 per cent of the total budget of $3.217 billion. Although that works out to $33.592 million, it is given a credit of $3.052 million that the UN collects from its Indian employees in lieu of the income taxes they would have had to pay. The rate of budget assessments for each of the 193 member countries is worked out by a complex formula that is based on gross national income (which is the gross domestic product plus income from abroad), debt burden and an adjustment for per capita income using the principle of the "capacity to pay". Although India boasts of being the world's fifth-largest economy, its assessment is brought down by the low per capita income diminishing its "capacity to pay". This puts its assessment lower than some fellow developing countries like Brazil with an assessment of 2.013 per cent or <keyword id="3746" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mexico" source="Orion">Mexico</keyword> at 1.221 per cent. The assessment for the US is 22 per cent, which is the highest that can be set for a country, working out to $707.897 million. <keyword id="1334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="china" source="Orion">China</keyword> comes next with an assessment of 15.254 per cent or 490.83 million. Britain, the size of whose economy was overtaken by India, pays $140.775 million or 4.375 per cent to be the fifth-largest contributor with <keyword id="6355311" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="japan" source="Orion">Japan</keyword> being the third and <keyword id="87" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="germany" source="Orion">Germany</keyword> the fourth. After lowering the tax rates for two consecutive fortnights mirroring fall in global crude prices, the <keyword id="47209" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="finance-ministry" source="Orion">finance ministry</keyword> has brought about a hike in export taxes on crude, diesel and <keyword id="44833" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="atf" source="Orion">ATF</keyword>, in its latest review. At the seventh fortnightly review, the government raised the windfall profit tax on the export of diesel to ₹ 12 per litre from ₹ 5 a litre, and brought back the levy on ATF (Aviation Turbine Fuel) exports at ₹ 3.50 per litre, from nil, finance ministry said in a notification.
