Indians are no longer looking for “best purchases and value buys under Rs 1,000”—at least not as much as before. <br /><br /><keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s getting fancy, and how! From gold-flaked chocolates to swanky SUVs that look like they’re wheeled straight out of a Bollywood blockbuster, Indian companies are rapidly jazzing up their product lines, even faster than you can say the word "premiumization."<br /><br />But what does this mean for Indian companies and consumers? What is this jazz about premiumization all about? Is it just urban India that’s riding this wave, or has rural India also joined the bandwagon? We decode for you.<br /><br /><h2>What's premium, really?</h2>Imagine you’re eating Pav Bhaji at a roadside <em>thela</em>. Later during the day, you decide to dine out at a fancy, upmarket cafe, only to find Pav Bhaji Fondue on the menu. Same same, but much more expensive—often 5 to 10 times higher—for a little more hygiene and some better ambience!<br /><br />Think of premium products as this fondue. They are a notch up your regular, daily-use products soaps or shampoos, and even cars, all packaged luxuriously, offering just about the right touch of quality. The main differentiator, though, would be the price range.<br /><br /><h2>Driving home premium wellness</h2>A recent report by Nielsen suggests that over 70% of urban Indians are okay with paying a premium for their products. And companies are cashing in on this sentiment like never before. This explains why 58% of new products launched so far this year have been in the premium+ segment, as opposed to just 38% of new launches in regular, traditional trade.<br /><br />Take cars, for instance. Indians are no longer vying for a good old <keyword id="19950117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti" source="keywords">Maruti</keyword> 800 or <keyword id="20400567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="alto" source="keywords">Alto</keyword>, traditionally known for their healthy mileage, but are rather happy investing in more swanky features that come along with high-end cars.<br /><br />In October 2024, India’s largest car manufacturer, <keyword id="19909974" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="keywords">Maruti Suzuki</keyword>, sold 65,948 units of its compact cars like Swift, WagonR, Dzire, and more. Compared to the year-ago period, which saw sales of 80,662 units, this was an 18% dip.<br /><br />But take a look at their SUV (sport utility vehicle) sales for the same period. Cars like Brezza, Ertiga, and Grand Vitara sold about 70,644 units, a 19% uptick from the sales made in October 2023, i.e. 59,147 units. Simply put, when it comes to cars, Indians are saying the bigger, the better!<br /><br />The same is true for India's second biggest automobile manufacturer, Hyundai. Its SUV lineup made up a staggering 68.2% of the firm's total sales made for October 2024. What's more, SUV demand remained largely consistent across urban and rural markets.<br /><br /><h2>Consumers are inching up</h2>FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) are also riding the premiumization wave, with Indians prioritizing their health and wellness and not bothered about dishing out a few extra bucks for the same! You’ll find no dearth of words like organic, vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free, peppered generously over every product you’ll see today, be it soaps, juices, or more. <br /><br />No wonder then, sales from premium segments in 2024 make up around 27% of all FMCG sales and even contribute a massive 42% to the sector’s value growth in India. <br /><br />Nielsen report further adds that luxury brands that position themselves at twice the price of their category’s average are even witnessing stellar growth. <br /><br />In fact, for most FMCG brands like Tata Consumer Products, <keyword id="20002610" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hindustan-unilever" source="keywords">Hindustan Unilever</keyword> (HUL), Dabur, and Nestle, it is this premium segment that is growing much faster than their regular ones.<br /><br />And it's not just about daily-use products; Indians are also taking their celebrations a step over. Spirits manufacturer <keyword id="20125704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="radico-khaitan" source="keywords">Radico Khaitan</keyword> highlighted that for the first half of 2024, their prestige &amp; above segment made for 88.4% of its net sales value. In the same period, the regular popular segment accounted for just 9.1% of their net sales.<br /><br />From Hindustan Unilever, which saw its premium products grow 30% over the last quarter, to <keyword id="20521971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kingfisher" source="keywords">Kingfisher</keyword> beer's parent company, <keyword id="20124009" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="united-breweries" source="keywords">United Breweries</keyword>, whose premium product sales volume jumped by 27% during the quarter as opposed to just a 5% rise in overall volumes, everyone is seemingly taking their lifestyle a notch above. <br /><br />Per the Nielsen report, in 2024, a typical global consumer spends about $13.7k per year. This is set to grow by around 2.4% to $14k as early as next year. Even a report by Goldman Sachs also highlighted a similar trend, noting that India’s affluent class, or those earning over $10,000 (Rs 8,42,694.97), is set to reach 100 million in the next 3 years. And where will this consumer spend? On premium products!<br /><br /><h2>Online shopping shifts from mass to class</h2>Amazon’s Great Indian Shopping Festival, which was live between September 27 and October 29 this year, saw 140 crore customers, more than 85% of whom came from non-metro Indian cities. On the site, there was a 400% spike in sales in premium sales across categories like watches, fragrances, handbags, jewelry, and more. Rival <keyword id="19896939" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flipkart" source="keywords">Flipkart</keyword> noted a similar trend, recording 1.8x growth in premium beauty and personal care products during the first half of this year.<br /><br /><h2>Dialing in premiumness</h2>The Indian smartphone ecosystem has always been dominated by basic phones, or those entry- and mid-range phones that are priced between Rs 10,000 and Rs 6,000. But that has changed in recent times, with premium smartphones (i.e., those priced over Rs 60,000) registering 20%+ growth in 2024.<br /><br />During the first quarter of this year, sales of mass phones (priced between Rs 10,000 and 20,000) reached 44%, compared to 51% in the year-ago period. But it's all sunny and shiny in the mid-premium (priced between Rs 40,000 and Rs 60,000) and super-premium segments (priced above Rs 60,000). Sales growth has burgeoned by as much as 27% and 86% in these categories, respectively.<br /><br />As India continues its march toward becoming the world's third-largest economy by 2027, the premium party is just getting started. Industry experts predict that premium segments will grow faster than you can say "sustainable organic handcrafted artisanal batch of coffee."<br /> <br />So the next time you see someone dropping serious rupees on a fancy bottle of black water that also somehow plays music and tracks their hydration (yes, that's a thing), remember: This is just the trailer. In a boost to Elon Musk's <keyword id="20034452" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="starlink" source="keywords">Starlink</keyword>, Communications Minister Scindia has said the spectrum for satellite broadband will be allocated and not auctioned as sought by Indian billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Mittal. The satellite broadband spectrum will however be not given free and sector regulator Trai will fix a price for the resource, he told PTI in a text and video interview. <br /><br />"Every country has to follow the <keyword id="20848482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-telecommunications-union" source="keywords">International Telecommunications Union</keyword> (ITU), which is the organisation that lays out the policy for spectrum in space or satellites, and the ITU has been very clear in terms of the spectrum being given out on an assignment basis. In addition, if you look across the world today, I cannot think of a single country that auctions spectrum for satellite," Scindia said. <br /><br />India is a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency for digital technology. <br /><br />Musk's Starlink and global peers like Amazon's Project Kuiper back an administrative allocation. <br /><br />While Ambani's Reliance Jio has been vocal about the need to allocate such spectrum through an auction to provide a level playing field to legacy operators who buy airwaves and set up infrastructure like telecom towers, Mittal last month at an industry event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present articulated the need to use bidding for such allocation. <br /><br />Jio and Mittal's Bharti Airtel - India's largest and second-largest operators, respectively - feel that giving away the satellite broadband airwaves at a pre-decided price by the government will create an uneven playing field since they had to compete in an auction to get spectrum for their terrestrial wireless phone networks. <br /><br />The two are vying for a piece of the satellite broadband segment as well. <br /><br />Musk-led Starlink is demanding administrative allotment of licences in line with the global trend as it looks to tap into the world's fastest-growing mobile telephony and internet market. <br /><br />Scindia said the Telecom Act of 2023 passed in December has put the matter in 'Schedule 1', which means that the Satcom spectrum will be allocated administratively. <br /><br />Such an allocation will be at a government-decided price, and allow foreign firms like Starlink to offer voice and data services. If the spectrum were to be auctioned, it would have made it costlier for Starlink to roll out services. <br /><br />Starlink has applied for a licence to start operations in the country. <br /><br />Scindia, however, offered no clues on the fate of his application. <br /><br />The minister said that the regulatory process is very clear and transparent. <br /><br />The new Telecom Act has been passed, and the Satellite spectrum is very clearly a part of that in schedule one, he pointed out. <br /><br />"...and therefore, we are open to looking at the application of any entity that wants to invest in India at this point in time. I think only one or two licenses have been given out. And whoever else wants to participate, India is surely going to welcome that," the minister said. <br /><br />Last month, Musk, in a post on X, termed the demand made by Jio for shunning sector regulator Trai's consultation paper on satellite broadband being allocated and not auctioned as "unprecedented", and when Mittal made the pitch in the presence of the Prime Minister, he asked if it was "too much trouble" to allow Starlink to provide internet services in India. <br /><br />This was perhaps the first time that Musk, whose networth of USD 241 billion is more than the combined wealth of Ambani, Mittal and Gautam Adani, had spoken directly against demands for a level playing field made by the Indian firms. <br /><br />Musk, the mind behind PayPal, founder of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of X (formerly Twitter), uses his social media platform on a daily basis to make his views known on a vast array of topics.

It has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>Whizzing around in a tuk-tuk in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/train-ride-experience-through-sri-lanka-hill-country-3-dollars-7-hours-2018-11">Sri Lankan city of Kandy</a>, I felt exhilarated as the rickety vehicle weaved in and out of the traffic.</p><p>It was just as thrilling as the ride I'd taken along bumpy roads with a busload of locals between the island's capital and a gorgeous beach.</p><p>The sense of freedom and independence was overwhelming. At 43, I finally found the courage to travel alone.</p><p>Until July this year, I'd only been away with family members, usually my mom. The one time she didn't join me was the honeymoon I spent with my former husband in 2008. The relationship lasted a year, and I moved back in with my parents. I've been single since then.</p><h2 id="53abda82-650d-4175-97b9-91a60caffee9"><strong>I never went on vacation with girlfriends</strong></h2><p>Before and after my marriage, I spent every break with the people who raised me. I'm from <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-sikhs-in-america-celebrate-vaisakhi-2024-4">a traditional Sikh family</a>, and traveling as a unit is often customary.</p><p>I never went on vacation with girlfriends, for example. But I didn't feel like I was missing out. I always had fun with my close relatives.</p><p>Over the years, we have visited places in the UK, such as North Wales, and flown to Canada and India to stay with our extended family.</p><p>My dad, now 76, joined us. She's easygoing and a great travel companion. Our most hilarious vacation was in Cyprus. One day, we went on a coach trip and got off at the wrong stop, ending up in a resort town that was party central.</p><p>There were all these young people on the beach, half of them naked. But Mom went ahead and enjoyed herself, thinking it was funny.</p><p>Unfortunately, we couldn't <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-surprising-things-about-flying-during-the-pandemic-2020-7">travel during COVID</a>. I missed it a lot because it broadens your mind. It made me feel a bit trapped in the house.</p><p>Then, my mom <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-shares-misdiagnosis-signs-blood-cancer-myeloma-2022-12">contracted blood cancer</a> at 72. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.instagram.com/minreet_kaur/?hl=en">I'm a freelance writer</a>, but I am now her primary carer. I coordinate her medical treatments and handle all the paperwork.</p><h2 id="c5ab44c7-59b1-42df-a234-eacfe4931100">I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and travel alone</h2><p>In many Asian families, it often falls on daughters to take responsibility for their parents as they get older. It's a respect thing. I'm happy to help. but it's difficult when you're trying to juggle it with work.</p><p>Mom noticed how hard it was. Despite her health issues, she recognized that I needed to spread my wings. "You should travel again, even on your own," she said. "I'll be fine."</p><p>I realized I was the main person holding myself back. It was a combination of guilt about leaving my parents and fear of stepping out of my comfort zone. I was never anxious or scared because I wasn't with my family.</p><p>Still, I was in touch with my parents daily, so they didn't worry about me. My uncles and a few friends who lived nearby checked in on my mom and her procedures.</p><h2 id="21a01d11-28d4-4112-9481-84045bd29d51">I now have a bucket list of destinations</h2><p>Mom and Dad were perfectly OK when I returned. Mom was particularly pleased to hear about my adventures.</p><p>The whole experience has left me wanting more. It also offers various enhancement options using AI, including the ability to reduce echoes.<br /><br />The laptop is equipped with a 59 Whr battery and offers a decent battery life, allowing you to get around 8 hours of usage. It supports 65W charging, allowing you to quickly charge the device.<br /><br /><h2>Verdict</h2>The HP EliteBook G1q is a feature-packed device designed for professionals looking for a sleek and powerful laptop. The device ticks all the right boxes, including a good design, powerful hardware and a lightweight form factor.<br /><br />At the end of the day, price does come into play and the EliteBook G1q is priced on the higher side. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Shireen Nagdive worked as a software engineer in India when she applied for a master's in the US.</li><li>She told Business Insider it was a big risk taking out a $59,000 loan for her studies.</li></ul><p><em>This as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with 29-year-old Shireen Nagdive from Kalyan, India, about her experience moving to the US and working for Salesforce. The following has been edited for length and clarity.</em></p><p>I grew up in a very small town in India called Kalyan, near Mumbai. I've been interested in computers since I was a child and wanted to pursue a career in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/computer-science-job-market-was-tougher-than-i-expected-2023-12">computer science</a> since the eighth grade.</p><p>I did my bachelor's degree in computer science at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/indians-leaving-big-tech-to-launch-startups-back-home-2024-9">India</a> from 2012 to 2016. In the last year of my course, I got an offer as a software engineer for a multinational company in India.</p><p>I'm the first woman in my family to graduate from college and work for a big corporation.</p><h2 id="a8a22fef-ba92-45d4-8510-b66557966d2f"><strong>I applied for a master's in the US</strong></h2><p>I moved in with some roommates from work. They were all sitting the graduate record examination, which can help with admissions to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/graduate-school-masters-mba-college-regret-2024-7">business schools in the US</a>.</p><p>I'd never heard of it. No one close to me had pursued a career outside our hometown, let alone in the US.</p><p>At 23, I knew I wanted to spend my whole career in tech, and it seemed like a good time to study for a couple of years in the US. I wanted to deepen my understanding of computer science and work on more complex projects. I decided to do the exam and see what happened. Every day after my 9-to-5, I'd study for the exam.</p><p>I sat the exam and got decent marks, so I applied for several master's degrees in computer science in the US in 2017. I had a rough idea of how expensive they were, but I didn't know how I'd pay for them. I got into the computer science master's program at Stony Brook College in New York to start in 2018.</p><h2 id="e52405e2-72cb-4d22-aabd-529d38764bc3"><strong>I took a big risk taking out a loan</strong></h2><p>I'd funded my examination and college application fees through my job, but I had no idea how I would finance a master's degree in America.</p><p>The course fees were $59,000. That is a lot of money, which my family didn't have.</p><p>I'd have to take on a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/professor-student-loan-debt-suddenly-forgiven-2024-8">lot of debt</a>. One option was to take out a collateral loan on our family home. The bank would be able to take the property as collateral if I didn't make my payments. My dad and I discussed this, but we didn't want our only house to be an asset on the loan.</p><p>I decided to take out a non-collateral loan to cover the fee cost, which has a higher interest rate.</p><p>Relatives asked me why I was taking on so much debt for my education instead of buying a house in India, building my own company, or making an investment. My dad, who had paid for my bachelor's degree, was worried, but my mom encouraged him to trust me.</p><p>I questioned whether it was worth it, but I wanted to invest in myself. I thought: "If I don't take this risk now, I will regret it for the rest of my life."</p><p>To counteract my doubts, I developed a calculated risk framework. What would be the worst thing that could happen, and how I would resolve it?</p><p>The worst-case scenario was that I didn't get a job in the US, and it would take me a lot longer to repay my debt, including more interest. My solution was to return to India, where I knew I could get work. It might take me a decade to repay my debt, but at least I'd have no regrets.</p><h2 id="2e018fd4-9e86-4790-b36d-30a1edca9c44"><strong>I focused on what I could control</strong></h2><p>I'd never been to the US before, but my debts scared me more than moving to a new country. Stony Brook is in New York. I visualized skyscrapers like in movies, but the college was actually in Long Island. My room was cramped. I initially wondered why I had come, but I made friends and adjusted to the city.</p><p>Two weeks after I started, my friend and I wanted to try out salsa classes. That day, I heard from my roommates that someone on the course had already landed an internship with Microsoft. I hadn't even started preparing to apply to internships. I ditched the salsa and told myself I'd focus solely on my applications to tech jobs and interview preparation.</p><p>Landing an internship could help my résumé and could be converted into a full-time offer. I worked day and night at college and gave my 100%. Working so hard on application alongside my course and assignments was pretty stressful. All the computer science students worked and lived on the same campus – it felt competitive, but also motivating.</p><p>I was often homesick and called my parents daily. I liked hearing about what they had for lunch and dinner, just the basic things.</p><h2 id="af48b5f8-1d58-4940-a393-2a3efa2f747a"><strong>I landed a job with Salesforce</strong></h2><p>I got an internship with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/salesforce-ping-pong-work-flexible-2024-7">Salesforce</a> in the summer of 2019 while doing my master's. It was in Washington state. I got to work on a project. I realized it was a great place for engineering and innovation and I really liked the culture. It helped me figure out I wanted to work on the backend side of things, on large scale systems.</p><p>My manager was a great mentor and when I finished the project, I was offered a full-time role on the technical team that aligned with my interests. It was based in the Bay Area.</p><p>I felt so relieved, and happy that my hard work had finally paid off. Not only could I repay my debt, but I could contribute to a great tech product at Salesforce.</p><h2 id="8a98083b-2e92-4cf4-85d8-b5f826c379d4"><strong>I moved to Silicon Valley</strong></h2><p>I moved to the Bay Area in February 2020. I realized how much <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/san-francisco-new-york-london-tech-where-to-live-2024-8">tech innovation is happening in the area</a> and how many opportunities there were to build relationships with people in the industry. But I was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/moved-to-us-from-india-big-tech-changed-me-2024-7">homesick</a> because I couldn't travel home to India during the pandemic.</p><p>I managed to pay back my loan in 2020.</p><p>I've been here for four years, with Salesforce sponsoring my visa. I'm enjoying life in the US and haven't got plans to return to India. I'll figure that out in a couple of years.</p><p>I'm so grateful I get to work with smart engineers on my team on a daily basis. I've seen an improvement in my problem-solving and communication skills in engineering.</p><p>Last year, I was able to bring my parents to the US for a holiday. It was a dream for me to show them around all the beautiful places in California. I've grown so much over the last few years both as a software engineer and as a person. Starting from scratch in a new country makes you tough.
