The three companies are expected to post record profits in the year ending March 2020, according to a latest report, despite falling passenger traffic. The irony has been brought to life by the scorching airfares. The Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) has estimated an annual profit of $400 million-500 million for IndiGo alone-- that is more than the profits last year for all three airlines put together. Within 12 months, SpiceJet's domestic market share could approach 25%, CAPA reportedly said. Indian airlines have more empty seats these days but their profits are soaring like never before-- and no one seems to care

<ul><li><keyword id="6354706" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndiGo">Indigo</keyword> reported a <keyword id="45439" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Net-Loss">net loss</keyword> of ₹6.5 billion for the quarter ended September 2018 — its first quarterly loss since its initial public offering in late 2015. </li><li>The airline attributed its weak results to the rising costs of <keyword id="4869" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fuel">fuel</keyword>, the depreciation of the rupee and an inability to increase fares owing to intense competition. </li><li>Indigo is looking to tap into more international routes, especially in Southeast Asia, and reduce fuel costs by operating lighter aircrafts n order to offset cost pressures at home. </li></ul>Indigo, India’s largest budget airline, just <a href="https://www.goindigo.in/content/dam/goindigo/investor-relations/Financial%20Results/2018-19/q2-jul-to-sep-2018/Unaudited-Financial-Results.pdf">reported</a> a net loss of ₹6.5 billion for the quarter ended September 2018 — its first quarterly loss since its <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/ipos/fpos/indigos-rs-3018-crore-ipo-three-times-oversubscribed/articleshow/49580179.cms">initial public offering</a> in late 2015. This came despite a 17% rise in revenue from operations to ₹61.9 billion as the airline added 35 new routes and recorded an increase in passenger traffic. Indigo laid the blame for its loss squarely on external issues ; the rising costs of fuel, the depreciation of the rupee and an inability to increase fares owing to intense competition. In fact, the airline said that high fuel costs were responsible for over half of the fall in its profitability. The fact that Indigo — which boasts <a href="https://www.goindigo.in/content/dam/goindigo/investor-relations/Financial%20Results/2018-19/q2-jul-to-sep-2018/Unaudited-Financial-Results.pdf">a 42% market share </a>and is routinely touted for its efficiency and low costs — is struggling is indicative of a sector-wide malaise, and does not bode well for the results of other airlines. India’s carriers have not had an easy year. Fuel costs, which are denominated in dollars and comprise nearly 40% of the operating costs of most airlines, have been accelerating amid a global supply crunch and the rupee’s freefall. Meanwhile, airlines have been unable to increase fares by a corresponding amount for fear of driving customers away. In a bid to keep costs in control, most airlines have stalled plans to buy new aircrafts and resorted to leasing them instead. The sector’s major casualties are Jet Airways, which is selling a stake in its loyalty programme to stay afloat, and Air India, which is pinning its hopes on a government bailout. The government has taken notice of the sector’s problems. In September, it was said to be planning <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-indian-government-is-planning-a-rescue-package-for-the-aviation-sector-as-the-losses-pile-up/articleshow/65681289.cms">a relief package</a> for the <keyword id="31907" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aviation">aviation</keyword> industry. While this was meant to include a reduction in aviation fuel prices, it actually hiked <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india-continues-its-defense-of-the-rupee-by-hiking-import-duties-on-19-products/articleshow/65976347.cms">import duties on aviation turbine fuel</a>, in addition to other items, a month ago in order to defend the rupee. In order to hold onto its market share at home, Indigo has no option but to play the fare discounting game. In fact, it was forced to scrap <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/price-war-indigo-blames-rival-carriers-for-pricing-pressure-on-airlines-118102401221_1.html"> a fuel surcharge</a> a few months ago on its ticket prices because none of the other Indian airlines followed suit. However, unlike its domestic rivals, Indigo has other avenues for offsetting its cost pressures over the next few quarters. In a bid to attract maximum customers, airlines are going out of their way, because of which flyers are pleased to no end in this peak travel season. In the latest development, domestic airfares have become 25-35% cheaper than they were last year, while international airfares have also seen a fall of 15-20%. 
 
This time, the drop in fares was initiated by IndiGo, which further prompted Vistara, SpiceJet, and Air India to follow suit. This, if true, would be the first time that IndiGo, the usually nofrills airline, would have adopted this strategy. However, IndiGo has denied initiating the competition.

Attention travellers! Airfares have declined by as much as 35%

All thanks to <a href="http://businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=demonetisation&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">demonetisation</a>, <keyword id="44023" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="airlines">airlines</keyword> saw a steep decline of 35% in average domestic fares as the cash ban took away their pricing power at a time when they were also adding capacity. 
 
As per the data by <a href="http://businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Yatra.com&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Yatra.com</a>, average domestic fares from November 1, 2016 to January 31 this year declined on key domestic routes compared with a year earlier. 
 
The cash ban took out about 85% of the total cash in circulation. This led to consumers holding their hands while spending as ATMs were out of cash. The weak sentiment, airlines said, rubbed off on their performance. 
 
<a href="http://businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IndiGo&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">IndiGo</a>, the local market leader, blamed the "impact on consumer spending and behaviour, from demonetisation for the fall in fares. 
 "The monetisation policy went into effect on November 8 and for the full month of November, our yields were down 20% and in December our yields were down 17%. The situation, though, is improving. In January, the yield decline was smaller at about 10%. "Based on the January 2017 yield forecast, we are hopeful that the effects of demonetisation are largely behind us,” <keyword id="6354706" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indigo">IndiGo</keyword> chief financial officer <keyword id="3368118" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rohit-Philip">Rohit Philip</keyword> said. 
 
Many expected this would insulate the industry from demonetisation effect. But lastminute travel, where a chunk of payments was still in cash, took a hit as a result of liquidity crunch, hurting the pricing power of airlines, said experts. 
 
"Our pricing power was gone, may be, because a lot of last-minute ticket bookers - corporate travellers including from small and medium enterprises - postponed or cancelled their travel,” a senior executive at a full-service carrier, who didn't want to be identified, told ET. 
 
The executive, too, reported an improvement in January, after "a sharp dip in average fares during November and December,. 
 
Travel industry insiders see another reason for the impact on fares. Airlines added capacity in recent months, which led to a demand-supply mismatch. 
 "We believe that declining average fares are driven more by the capacity addition by airlines. The number of domestic passengers has increased by a very healthy 23% over last year despite demonetisation, which means it never had a major impact on the aviation sector,” <keyword id="332366" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sharat-Dhall">Sharat Dhall</keyword>, chief operating officer (B2C), at <keyword id="143718" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yatra-com">Yatra.com</keyword>., told ET. 
 
Notably, the number of air passengers grew in double digits despite the note ban, by 22.45% and 23.91% in November and December, respectively.

Number of passengers grew over 22%, thanks to low airfares due to cashban

The <keyword id="432202" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-air-traffic">domestic air traffic</keyword> grew for fifth consecutive month in February and as per the data by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the traffic went up over 20% on a year-on-year basis. 
 DGCA stated that in February, <keyword id="1446" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-airlines">Indian airlines</keyword> flew 7.4 million passengers as against 6 million passengers in the corresponding month of the last year, indicating a jump of 24.7%. 
 
A multiple factors backed this trend such as low fuel cost, most discounts by airlines and also increase in rail fares. 
 
It should be noted that the difference between the fares of rail (AC 2-tier) and air is in the range of Rs 700-800 on these key routes. 
 Meanwhile, <keyword id="6358032" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SpiceJet">SpiceJet</keyword> is showing impressive growth, better than <keyword id="6354706" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indigo">IndiGo</keyword>, as it has high load factor of 92.3% compared with IndiGo's 86%. 
 
SpiceJet's stock is also cheaper in valuation.

We are particularly pleased with this quarter because it demonstrated our ability to grow rapidly while simultaneously expanding our margin performance," the company's CEO, Ronojoy Dutta said. In a conference call with analysts, the management highlighted that its efforts in managing its fleet and routes led to a fall in fuel cost of 11% during the quarter whereas the actual fall in jet fuel was much lesser. "Going forward, obviously, this quarter the aircraft utilisation was a little lower due to some temporary issues. As that improves there will be some tailwinds in terms of fixed costs," Rohit Philip, the chief financial officer of IndiGo said. Sales jumped 42% to ₹9,420 crore and market share has steadily risen since rival Jet Airways went bankrupt and stopped flying. This has helped all airlines charge higher airfares while costs came down, helping their profits. However, Chief Executive Officer Ronojoy Dutta dismissed any significant benefit from the disappearnce of Jet Airways on the company's performance. IndiGo only got 35 slots vacated by Jet in the Mumbai airport and that's a small portion of the total 1400 slots IndiGo has. For fiscal year 2020, year over year capacity increase in available seat per kilometre is expected to be 30%, the company said in a presentation. The shares of HPCL ended 5% higher on Thursday. SpiceJet, IndiGo and other aviation-related stocks The stocks of SpiceJet, IndiGo and other aviation-related stocks will be in focus today. The Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced that the upper and lower limits on domestic airfares would remain in place for another three months post-November 24. The shares of SpiceJet ended 2% lower on Thursday. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) ONGC subsidiary Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) registered a net profit of ₹35.84 crore in the second quarter ended September 30, as against a loss of ₹574.45 crore in the corresponding period last year. The shares of MRPL ended 1% lower on Thursday. Zensar Technologies Zensar Technologies reported an 11.7% rise in net profit to ₹89.2 crore for the second quarter ended September 30. The board of the company has also given in-principle approval for a merger of its wholly-owned subsidiary Cynosure Interface Services with the company. The merger aims at reducing administrative costs. The shares of Zensar Technologies ended 0.37% lower on Thursday. TVS Motor TVS Motor Company reported a 29.37% decline in consolidated net profit at ₹181.41 crore for the quarter ended September 30. The production and sales improved consistently from July onwards, but the commercial vehicle segment continued to hurt the company. The shares of TVS Motor ended over 1% lower on Thursday. Vodafone Idea Debt-ridden telecom firm Vodafone Idea reported narrowing of its consolidated loss to ₹7,218.2 crore for the quarter ended September 30. The company had posted a loss of ₹50,897.9 crore in the same quarter last year. However, the total income declined by about 3% to ₹10,830.5 crore during the reported quarter. The company’s subscriber base also declined to 27.18 crore in Q2, from 27.98 crore earlier. The shares of Vodafone Idea ended 4% lower on Thursday. Angel Broking Kuwait Investment Authority has acquired half a percent stake in retail broking company Angel Broking via open market transactions on October 29 for ₹321.73 per share. The shares of Angel Broking ended 3% higher on Thursday. As <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/dgca-asks-airlines-to-rein-in-fares-as-jet-crisis-takes-a-toll/articleshow/68914262.cms">90% of Jet’s slots </a>were unused, the process of allocating them to other airlines was also underway. As they get more flight slots, domestic airlines have no choice but to increase the size of their fleets to meet their increased flight commitments. In fact, instead of a planned addition of 80 planes at domestic carriers, the number has recently been <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/150-new-planes-this-fiscal-to-fight-fare-turbulence/articleshow/68983278.cms?from=mdr">increased to 150</a> - a third of which will be added at market leader Indigo. <keyword id="2573" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Air-India">Air India</keyword> is currently in the process of securing some planes <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/air-india-looks-at-leasing-some-boeing-737s-of-grounded-jet-airways/1554785/">that were leased to Jet</a> for both international and domestic routes, having written to the State Bank of India <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/air-india-keen-on-taking-5-grounded-jet-boeings-1555577250188.html">for permission to do so</a>. AirAsia is also reportedly <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/150-new-planes-this-fiscal-to-fight-fare-turbulence/articleshow/68983278.cms?from=mdr">adding 14 planes</a> this coming quarter. Meanwhile, both <keyword id="6358032" type="DOMAIN" weightage="20" keywordseo="SpiceJet">SpiceJet</keyword>, GoAir and Indigo have also moved to <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/jet-airways-crisis-spicejet-air-india-step-in-to-soften-blow-to-indian-aviation-industry-1555717072015.html">lease more planes and add more flights</a>. Spicejet alone has hired hundreds of Jet’s former employees. An estimated 20,000 employees were without work when the airline shut operations. Jet’s suspension is expected to last until the creditor-led bidding process for a majority stake in the airline is completed. However, if the bidding process fails to unearth a serious bidder - which is a possibility given the fact that Jet isn’t operational - the airline might have <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/jet-airways-crisis-lenders-keen-on-non-ibc-resolution-in-case-bidding-process-fails/articleshow/68974386.cms">to undergo liquidation proceedings</a>. As Jet remains grounded, Indian airlines are increasing their fleets to rein in surging ticket prices

Domestic carriers are once again trying to spice up the festive season by offering heavy discounts on airfare. India's low-budget carrier Spicejet announced five-day ‘Diwali Dhamaka’ sale on Tuesday, ranging from all-inclusive fares of Rs 899 to Rs 2,499, for travel starting from November 1, 2014, to December 2015. 
 
The sale would be on till October 26 and would be available for short distance travel between sectors like Bangalore-Chennai-Kochi. While on the Bangalore-Goa sector, a one-way ticket price would start at Rs 1,599 and for the rest of India, the starting fare would be Rs 2,499. 
 Soon after SpiceJet announced a discounted ticket scheme, Mumbai-based <keyword id="6358200" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jet-Airways">Jet Airways</keyword> also launched a similar scheme starting from an all-inclusive fare of Rs 899. On the other hand, <keyword id="6354706" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indigo">Indigo</keyword> announced fares between Rs 1,590 to Rs 4,999 on its domestic network. 
 The October-December period is considered as the peak season for air travel in India and generally witnesses an increase in fares by 10-30% each year. According to travel portal <keyword id="132652" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cleartrip">Cleartrip</keyword>, however, fares this year are about 20% lower as compared to same period last year. 
 
As per an airline executive, pricing has been subdued during the peak season this year due to oversupply, resulting in lower occupancy in flights. 
 
Last week, GoAir, another budget Indian airline, had announced a discounted ticket scheme for travel between October 21 and 30 with fares for flights from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi. The fare started from Rs 2,510. However, travel agents call these flash sales a gimmick. 
 “Post-Diwali period is a low season for airlines. Secondly, domestic carriers are facing cash flow problems so these sales are one way for them to collect money in advance. These sales are similar to the ‘up to 50 per cent discounts’ in malls, not all the clothes will have a 50 per cent discount. Similarly, just the first 10 tickets will be low-priced. Such sales are gimmicks and mislead the public. For travel agents, these sales are an irritation as clients demand such low rates on all the tickets booked during these periods, which cannot work out,” said Karl Dantas, president of <keyword id="2566939" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Enterprising-Travel-Agents-Association">Enterprising Travel Agents Association</keyword>.
