I wished I had a sister to answer questions I had. </li><li>But I've realized there were benefits to being an only child as I've gotten older.</li></ul>When I was a little girl, I used to ask my mom to adopt another child so that I could have an older sister. I wasn't lonely — I had plenty of friends and got along great with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unsupervised-play-outdoors-kids-neighborhood-benefits-2024-5">other kids in the neighborhood</a> and at school. But once I started to get older (and learned how to be self-conscious), I wanted an older sibling to "show me the ropes," in a sense.I wanted somebody to turn to for social and relationship — heck, even fashion — advice. It would've also been <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/only-child-desire-multiple-children-family-2024-4">nice to have a sibling</a> who could occasionally take some of the blame and attention from my parents away from me.<h2 id="c7601f17-ad9b-445a-8502-556c74c44083">When I was younger, I always wanted a sister</h2>I also wanted a sister to show me how to be a young girl going through adolescence. Shaving? Periods? I had questions I felt I couldn't ask my friends and that no puberty book could answer about social norms. My mom and I did have conversations, and she did the best that any parent could to help me, but there were certain things I just didn't want to talk to her about. Besides, with the 40+ year age gap between us, I didn't always feel as though she could <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-kid-baby-boomer-parents-generational-differences-parenting-lessons-2024-4">relate to my experiences</a>.I used to want that guidance and closeness I felt one could only get from a sister. Maybe I'm romanticizing that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/living-with-sister-home-base-stop-moving-2024-6">sisterhood relationship</a>. I wouldn't know. I'll never know what it's like to have a sister — or a sibling, for that matter. I didn't need an older sibling figure to look up to, or one to look out for me. Being an only child, at least for me, taught me how to be independent and resourceful (for example, I learned how to braid my hair thanks to a magical thing called YouTube in 2012). And while it meant getting some extra attention I sometimes didn't want from my parents, it also meant I got all the benefits they offered; I didn't have to share their positive attention or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/financial-advice-from-baby-boomer-parents-for-gen-z-2024-5">their wisdom</a>.Plus, I got all their financial support, which was a huge help for paying my university tuition. With fewer kids, we could travel more and to cooler places than I think we would've if I had siblings. Don't worry, though. My parents weren't afraid to say "no" to me, and I certainly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/only-child-gets-more-stuff-but-not-spoiled-2024-6">wasn't spoiled</a>.I had no problem learning how to share, as my parents were very good about ensuring I put others first and always had good manners. I also had no issue living with roommates at university. Even though I'm highly independent, I still ask my parents how to do things (like filing insurance claims). I'm grateful I've been set up to be so successful on my own.While I know being an only child means I should feel pressure to have kids or one day <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/only-child-caring-aging-parents-burden-2024-7">look after my parents</a>, they never make me feel I have this sort of responsibility to them. My parents want me to live my life for me, and I'm grateful for that. Though I did feel some pressure growing up to make my family proud and be successful — and I still do — it's my own goals that keep me going, and I'm not comparing myself to anyone else.

I'm happy I was an only child. It made me more independent and I got more financial support from my parents.

New Delhi, From appealing people not to vote for them to flaunting the unsuccessful tag, changing name in each election to losing huge sums of money in security deposits -- some tenacious <keyword id="20022603" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="independent" source="keywords">Independent</keyword> candidates have tried these all but losing elections became a habit for them. Tamil Nadu's K Padmarajan, who proudly calls himself the "Election King", might be the only candidate in the election fray who urges people not to vote for him, so he can retain his tag of being "most unsuccessful candidate", a feat also registered in the Limca Book of records. The 65-year-old tyre repair shop owner also finds pride in his entry in the <keyword id="19981515" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="guinness-book-of-world-records" source="keywords">Guinness Book of World Records</keyword> for candidate with most contested elections. He claims to have lost Rs 80 lakh so far in security deposits which gets forfeited every time he loses an election besides expenses for filing nomination amid fanfare. Gearing up for his 239th attempt, Padmarajan has filed his nomination for the 18th <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections from Thrissur in Kerala and Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu. "I began fighting elections in 1988 from my home town of Mettur, located in Tamil Nadu. I have contested 238 elections so far including against former prime ministers <keyword id="20374221" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="atal-bihar-vajpayee" source="keywords">Atal Bihar Vajpayee</keyword>, P V Narsimha Rao and Manmohan Singh. This will be my 239th attempt. I pick a unique battle every time," he told PTI. Asked about his campaign plans, Padmarajan said, "I ask people not vote for me, I don't want the votes but I want to continue to hold the tag of most unsuccessful candidate. I don't campaign but when I go for filing nomination, I do that in a grand way." From former chief ministers like Jayalalitha, M Karunanidhi, YSR Reddy and AK Antony to filmstars Hema Malini and Vijayakanth -- the list of bigwigs against whom Padmarajan has contested is long. Indore's Parmanand <keyword id="21190647" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tolani" source="keywords">Tolani</keyword> is taking forward his father's legacy who fought elections as independent candidate for three decades. "My father passed away in 1988 and I am taking forward his legacy. I have contested 18 elections so far including eight Lok Sabha and eight Vidhan Sabha. I will be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls too," 65-year-old Tolani told PTI. "My father's wish was that we do not have to stop the trend till someone from the family gets elected. If I am not able to do it in my lifetime, my two daughters will carry forward the baton," said Tolani, who is a property broker. <keyword id="21190648" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijay-prakash-kodekar" source="keywords">Vijay Prakash Kodekar</keyword> from <keyword id="19897309" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pune" source="keywords">Pune</keyword>, a retired staffer from state electricity board, has a different agenda behind contesting elections as independent candidate -- advocating zero budget poll campaigns. He can be seen pushing a steel cart on wheels in streets of Latur, where he is planning to contest the Lok Sabha polls. A flex board on the cart says "Main bhi Pradhanmantri". "The message why cannot any poor individual be the Prime Minister of the country. Why this exorbitant expenditure by parties on election campaigns? Polls can be fought on zero budget and the money can be utilised for public welfare," said 78-year-old Kodekar, who campaigns wearing a white dhoti. Having contested 24 elections so far, Kodekar uses a different name for different elections. "Some elections I have contested using the name Vijay, some with 'Rashtrapati' and some with the name 'Znyosho' -- as I am a disciple of Osho. I complete the name change formalities and then I contest the polls using the new name," he said. Hyderabad techie Ravinder Uppula, uses different campaign strategies for each Lok Sabha election he fights. In 2014 -- it was anti-corruption march and in 2019 it was a liquid only fast. "I promise during my campaign that if I get elected, I will get a lie detector test done every 100 days so public who votes for me doesn't feel cheated. That is how our politicians should do as well to weed out corruption," he said. Uppula, however, is disappointed with the poll campaign expenses. "It should not be an expensive deal to canvass in this country, an agenda and the right promise should be enough rather than the poll fray leaving the voters with no choice except voting for a smaller thief or a bigger thief," he added. The strange obsession of the independent candidates has also been featured in the book "The Power of The Ballot: Travail and Triumph in the Elections". Sharing the saga of some of the independent candidates' stint at the elections, the book decodes "why do some people contest every time knowing they will lose?" Kaka Joginder Singh, also known as "Dhartipakad", was a textile-shop owner who contested and lost over 300 elections. He died in 1998. In elections, he always contested independently, and always lost his security deposits. He earned the nickname Dhartipakad after several unsuccessful runs for the post of the President of India. The year with the greatest yield for him was during the tenth presidential elections in 1992 in which he earned fourth place in the polling with 1,135 votes, losing to Shankar Dayal Sharma; it was his best performance. He also contested elections from 14 states of India in the 1990s, mostly for state assemblies. Singh died in 1998. Long before <keyword id="19895781" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="keywords">Narendra Modi</keyword> chose Varanasi as an election destination, the city had Narendra Nath Dubey "Adig". Often referred to as Kashi's Dhartipakad, he has been fighting every election as an independent candidate since 1984, losing his security deposit each time. He passed away in 2022.

I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-create-healthy-boundaries-for-coparenting-after-divorce-2023-9">co-parented with his dad</a>, finished my degree, worked full-time, bought a house, and generally took care of us independently. As a teacher, I once had a student say they had "mad respect" for me when they found out that I was a single mom, and that's because the majority of people realize that being a single mom isn't easy.I don't know how I found the time to date, but I was committed to finding "the one," someone who would be a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stepdad-shares-how-he-became-part-of-his-stepchildrens-lives-2022-7">great partner and stepfather</a>. But now that I have that and I've been remarried for a couple of years, I actually miss my life as a single mom.<h2>I was proud to provide for my son</h2>It's difficult enough to cover all the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-americans-hate-economy-inflation-wages-recession-2023-9">expenses of life</a> on one income these days, but it's even more difficult when you have a young dependent and have to factor childcare into your budget. Childcare isn't cheap.There was an unexpected upside to being the sole head of the household, though. While making sure we had everything we needed on my teaching salary was tough, I experienced an enormous sense of pride from working hard and finding ways to stretch our budget.<h2>I always had the final say</h2>With being the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/how-single-mother-reached-financial-independence-2021-2">sole provider</a> also came being the sole decision-maker. While I always kept my son in mind, ultimately, I was the one who made the final decision on things like our home's decor, what was for dinner, and how we spent our free time.Instead of consulting another adult, I only had to ask my son if spaghetti sounded good for dinner, or if he wanted to go to the beach this weekend. While we sometimes <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/single-mom-bittersweet-changing-dynamic-with-daughter-2024-1">had our disagreements</a>, at the end of the day, the choice was always mine.<h2>My son and I formed a tight bond</h2>When it was just my son and me, everything that we did together became our thing. We formed countless inside jokes and the ability to communicate through facial expressions alone. We developed <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bird-nesting-divorce-parenting-plan-2023-12">day-to-day rituals</a> such as dance breaks after dinner and vanilla ice cream with rainbow sprinkles every night for dessert. These things will always remain ours because they only feel the same when it's just the two of us.From living without anyone else for so long, my son and I really got to know each other. We understand each other's preferences, can sense how we are feeling about something with ease, and are able to give one another sound advice. Now, my son can tell my husband whether I'll like a gift he's thinking of for me, and I trust my son's opinion about my outfit over anyone else's. In many ways, we know each other best.<h2>I actually had a lot of alone time</h2>As a single parent, I actually had a lot of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-i-make-time-for-myself-while-parenting-big-family">alone time</a>. When my son went to sleep, I had time to either unwind or tackle a few quick things from my to-do list. When he went with his father every other weekend, I ran errands and completed chores. This time without my son actually allowed me to focus on him when I did have him, which is a privilege that I realize not every parent has.If I could go back to my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/single-parent-dating-mistakes-mom-matchmaker-2024-2">single mom days</a>, I would appreciate the time more. I had so much on my plate at the time that I didn't realize how much I really had it made. For what my son and I both gained in my new marriage, we also lost a lot of one-on-one time with each other. But the perk to having been just the two of us for so long is that we will always have the strong bond we built during that time, no matter who comes into our picture. For that, I wouldn't trade having been a single mom for anything.

I miss being a single mom sometimes. I wish I'd enjoyed that time more before I remarried.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Hady Mendez was the former head of equality at a major tech company.</li><li>Mendez lists many things Gen X got wrong, and Gen Z got right, as far as diversity in the workplace.</li></ul>I'm a Generation Xer, but honestly, sometimes I wish I wasn't.It's not that I didn't love growing up resourceful and independent and listening to Madonna and Meatloaf while wearing my Jordache jeans and Benetton sweaters. It's just that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-working-to-live-rather-than-living-to-work-2024-1">Gen Z has so much</a> more going for it. They're a feisty bunch, and they're getting so many things right.As the former head of equality at a major tech company, an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/employee-resource-groups-small-business-community-company-culture-2022-10">Employee Resource Group (ERG)</a> leader for over 20 years, and a people manager overseeing multiple generations of employees, I think Gen Z is accurate on many different levels, and I'm here for it.Gen Z cares about a company's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dei-programs-america-diversity-equity-inclusion-pushback-how-to-fix-2024-2">commitment to DEI</a> — to the point that they'll decide where to work based on that investment. In contrast, my generation has always been more driven by other factors such as titles, money, and perceived stability. As a result, many former colleagues and I opted for roles that promised career progression, significant pay raises, and the prestige of working with top-tier companies. In retrospect, I believe we were chasing after a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-x-age-income-debt-forgotten-middle-child-struggling-financially-2023-12">false sense of security</a>.<h2>My generation has always been afraid of pissing off the wrong person</h2>Fear has often silenced us when we should've been more outspoken about workplace inequities, unjust practices, biased behaviors, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toxic-work-culture-job-advice-great-resignation-careers-2022-6">toxic company cultures</a>. Gen Z, on the other hand, has no fear about saying what needs to be said in the company of whoever might be listening. To them, getting it right is the priority.As an example, I once experienced unwanted advances from a visiting senior leader that left me feeling extremely uncomfortable. However, after conferring with a colleague, I chose not to address it for fear of repercussions on my career. At the time, we agreed that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-handle-stress-gossip-confrontation-work-psychology-professor-2022-3">escalating the situation</a> might hurt my reputation and/or people's desire to work with me, so I opted to remain silent.I believe I'd do things differently if the same situation happened now. As someone with more experience and understanding of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/loyalty-employee-employer-job-security-broken-work-companies-bosses-2024-1">shifting workplace dynamics</a>, I can see how allowing this behavior to go unchecked would be a mistake.<h2>Our priority has always been to fly below the radar</h2>As a first-gen Latina and woman of color in corporate spaces, I tried to call as little attention as possible to the fact that I was from a different background. There didn't seem to be a lot of upsides to bringing it up in the early part of my career — and I certainly <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/black-latina-women-disappeared-from-workforce-unemployment-discrimination-2023-2">didn't feelt safe</a> to do so. Drawing attention to that aspect of my identity felt risky, as it could negatively impact how I was treated and/or perceived by leaders and co-workers.These days, when I identify as a first-gen Latina, I get to enjoy the benefits of building community and attracting allies to support my work and advancement.I feel confident in openly acknowledging my Latina heritage, as today's workplace culture encourages authenticity. Both <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-millennials-job-market-unemployment-rate-economy-career-news-2024-3">millennials and Gen Zers</a> deserve recognition for reshaping our work environments because they've been the ones most fiercely advocating for individuals to embrace their complete selves at work.<h2>Gen X has always focused on finding "common ground" versus having difficult conversations</h2>We haven't demanded as much from our leaders because it was always easier — and safer — to focus on a shared task or goal. This is a missed opportunity. Gen X has let companies and executives get away with so much by not holding them more accountable.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-gen-z-is-rewriting-the-rules-of-work-2023-11">Gen Z demands what they need</a> and want. In my experience, I've seen them create and circulate companywide memos and petitions to engage senior leaders in meaningful discussions about subjects they feel strongly about.They'll bring up values at work that some might consider having nothing to do with business objectives. When <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6">Roe vs. Wade was overturned</a>, I saw so many calls for the company to show up for employees and women's reproductive rights. Seemingly this had nothing to do with our work at this tech company, but Gen Z and Millennials demanded the company not remain silent. "We must be openly and boldly defending women's rights," they insisted.<h2>My generation has always avoided "things you just don't talk about at work"</h2>When Roe was overturned, I found myself on a Women's ERG "emergency call," listening to other women cry and share their anger and fears about what was happening in our country. I'll never forget what that felt like because I don't believe that such a safe and nurturing space would've been possible when I first started working.I've come to appreciate these <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-resilient-office-how-workplaces-evolving-after-pandemic-2024-3">changes in the workplace</a>. Gen Z boldly leverages social media to record their #TechLayoffs, talk about #QuietQuitting, and encourage each other to #ActYourWage. My generation didn't have these platforms, nor have we always felt comfortable talking openly about such matters.<h2>It's definitely a new day</h2>Frankly, we were made to feel shame and embarrassment if we were let go, skipped over for promotion, or told we weren't working hard enough. I'm grateful to the newer generation for reframing these topics and encouraging more open conversation.Some in my generation may long for the good ol' days when senior leaders called the shots and other "sensitive topics" were kept out of the office, but I'm not one of those people.
