Education start-ups in India seem to be the hottest targets right now, going by the kind of <keyword id="6357455" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Funding">funding</keyword> they are attracting from local and global investors. A couple of days ago, Delhi-based start-up <keyword id="1974964" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Avanti-Learning-Centres">Avanti Learning Centres</keyword> raised an undisclosed amount in <keyword id="948731" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="seed-funding">seed funding</keyword> from <keyword id="1894311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pearson-Affordable-Learning-Fund">Pearson Affordable Learning Fund</keyword> (<keyword id="1954796" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="PALF">PALF</keyword>). Two more <keyword id="6365770" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="angel-investors">angel investors</keyword> also took part in the round. Avanti will use the <keyword id="1974977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Seed-round">seed round</keyword> to develop an <keyword id="1974975" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Online-offline-learning">online-offline learning</keyword> &amp; monitoring system, create more <keyword id="755302" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="educational-content">educational content</keyword> and build new <keyword id="68244" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Learning-centres">learning centres</keyword>. Currently, the <keyword id="1044076" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="education-start-up">education start-up</keyword> operates stand-alone and in-school centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kanpur, Roorkee and Puducherry, besides helping the <keyword id="3216" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="students">students</keyword> in three Tibetan schools in Uttarakhand and Karnataka. 
 
This is the second investment in India that Pearson has made through PALF, and the third overall since the fund was launched in July 2012. 
 In November this year, <keyword id="1954793" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Global-education-leader">Global education leader</keyword> Pearson’s inaugural <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/These-2-Peer-selected-Start-upsShared-150K-Investment-To-Boost-Low-cost-Education/articleshow/26512179.cms">edupreneur programme</a>, jointly launched by PALF and US-based investor Village Capital, came to a close with <keyword id="1954794" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Experifun">Experifun</keyword> and <keyword id="1467859" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sudiksha-Knowledge-Solutions">Sudiksha Knowledge Solutions</keyword> walking off with a seed funding of $75,000 each. The <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> will enable the start-ups to further develop their low-cost education ventures and assist underprivileged school children. 
 Pearson launched PALF in July 2012 with a capital of $15 million. Investments are made into private companies that offer <keyword id="1974987" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Affordable-educational-services">affordable educational services</keyword> and schooling in Asia, <keyword id="12925" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Africa">Africa</keyword> and Latin America. 
 Set up as a <keyword id="456748" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="non-profit">non-profit</keyword> in March 2010 by <keyword id="258061" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akshay-Saxena">Akshay Saxena</keyword> and <keyword id="1974967" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Krishna-Ramkumar">Krishna Ramkumar</keyword>, Avanti Learning Centres supports students from low-income families (those with a family income of $5,000 per annum or below) and prepares them for <keyword id="1974989" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="College-entrance-exams">college entrance exams</keyword>, especially the highly competitive engineering and medical entrance tests. Students can study up to 18 hours a week at a centre and need to pay only $20 per month. Costs are kept low as a large network of volunteers and partners, including universities, public schools, policy makers and private sector businesses, help with teaching and administration.

On Wednesday, the Indian government <a href="https://www.livemint.com/news/india/centre-launches-9-000-crore-plan-to-digitize-education-delivery-1550683075713.html">launched</a> an initiative to bring digital boards as part of a broader digital initiative, promising an investment of ₹90 billion in state-run schools and colleges. Starting next academic year — 2019- 2020 — the initiative will be implemented over three years and cover over 150,000 schools for classes 9th to 12th and “thousands of colleges” across the country, India’s Human Resource Minister Prakash Javedekar reportedly said. "Some 60-70 years back there was an 'Operation Blackboard' because that was the need of the hour then. But the country has progressed over the years, and now we need an Operation Digital Blackboard," IANS reported citing Prakash Javadekar. Its use will initially extend to subjects including focus on technology, mathematics, engineering and science. Overall, the move is aimed at making learning more interactive. Digital boards have been successfully used by many business schools. With analytics emerging as the hottest sector under technology, the initiative will include domains such as machine learning, analytics and artificial intelligence. The overall cost will be shared by both states and centre in a 60:40 ratio, with the centre spending most on the initiative. However, the expenses on colleges and schools will be funded by University Grants Commission (UGC) through loans, <a href="http://education-delivery-1550683075713.html">said</a> the Livemint report. Last year, the ministry had formed a committee under Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala of IIT Madras to look into the need of digital blackboards in schools/colleges. (With IANS)

From blackboards to digital boards: India infuses ₹90 billion to modernise classrooms

New Delhi, Oct 17 () Breaking of gender stereotypes should begin at play school level itself to ensure children are not gender biased when they grow up, according to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (<keyword id="48505" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NCERT">NCERT</keyword>). The council is an autonomous body under the HRD Ministry that assists and advises the Centre and state governments on policies and programmes that help in the qualitative betterment of school education. The "gender equality" recommendations has been made by NCERT in its new guidelines for pre-school education. It has asked schools to ensure that teachers demonstrate equal and appropriate expectations from boys and girls by providing them equal attention, respect and equal opportunities. "The schools should select books, plays and other activities free of gender bias. Teachers should avoid language that limits one gender or another and use gender neutral labels," a senior NCERT official said. "Teachers should use stories, songs, activities and facilitation aids that depict girls and boys, including some with special needs in the same roles as men and women in all professions. Both women and men should appear as leaders, heroes and problem solvers," the official said. The council has also recommended schools that parents should be regularly sensitised to support these practices at home. "It is important to help them understand and stop discrimination," the official added. The proposed curriculum will follow Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) that are appropriate to their age, stage and context to promote children's optimal learning and development. The guidelines also have recommendations for play schools to ensure careful inclusion of children with disabilities through early intervention that minimises learning difficulties and accelerates child development. The child's progress should also be recorded through observations of their behaviour, their artwork and other creations, interaction with other children, and anecdotal records, among other things. Nestled in the city of Hyderabad, is a mythological learning centre that takes one back to those memories. And at the helm of it is South Indian superstar Rana Daggubati. Daggubati, who brought the world to his notice with his role as the villain in SS Rajamouli’s magnum opus <keyword id="6354370" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="baahubali">Baahubali</keyword>, has partnered with Future Group and Amar Chitra Katha to bring about Amar Chitra Katha Alive - a state-of-the-art learning centre spread over 10,000 square feet for art and design, life skills, performing arts and vedic science and ethics. Daggubati claims it's not just another summer school. The ACK Alive centre offers over 64 courses – a modern take on Indian Gods Krishna and Balarama who studied life skills in just 64 days, he said. The courses range from simple courses like Photography, Creative Writing and Theatre to ones like Vedic Mathematics, Tarot reading and even Kalaripayattu – an Indian martial art that originated in Kerala. “The centre offers an all age group learning. You can come at any age or any time of your convenience and pick up a program that you like,” Rana Daggubati told Business Insider. Daggubati who has been involved in mythological movies like Baahubali, realised that there was no brand holding together all the stories that India’s mythology together like Amar Chitra Katha did. Talking about how the partnership happened, he said, “I was actually working on a different project with the Future Group and was then introduced to the idea of the Amar Chitra Katha learning centre.” While the centre was initially supposed to be built in Mumbai, Daggubati, who is now a director at Amar Chitra Katha, brought it to Hyderabad. Why? Better real estate options, of course! “Mumbai was the first option but we wanted to build something of scale. A centre which can have at least 250 people learning at the same time – in Mumbai it would be too expensive. Meanwhile, Hyderabad has an audience which still has great respect for ACK and still has a large readership too,” said Daggubati. The bringing about of ACK Alive also had a personal connection with Daggubati. The centre is today built on Daggubati’s previous office space. “Converting my previous office into a learning centre was quite emotional as this is where I learnt everything I know,” he said. At ACK Alive, Daggubati himself will be enrolling for a Vedic Mathematics course. The curated courses have seen a great response too, with over 200 families coming over in the first few days of its launch. While there are free classes going on until April 15th, many have already registered. BYJU's acquired Delhi-based offline test preparatory services provider <keyword id="6380190" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="aakash" source="Orion">Aakash</keyword> for $1 billion last year. The company was reacting to reports that Blackstone and other shareholders of Aakash are yet to be paid in both cash and stock as it has deferred the payment. A company spokesperson told IANS that the acquisition of "Aakash is fully on track and all payments are expected to be completed by the agreed upon date, i.e., August 2022". "Aakash is our most successful acquisition till date and we are very proud to have them in our fold," the company spokesperson added. "Along with all our group companies, we continue to be perfectly poised to provide access to quality education in all learning segments from early learning to exam prep and career success, the spokesperson said. Aakash Educational Services provides test preparation services for medical and engineering entrance exams, school/board exams, and other exams via Aakash Centres. The edtech unicorn made at least 10 acquisitions for a cumulative transaction value of about $2.5 billion last year. The latest development at BYJU's comes as the Indian edtech market is shrinking with reopening of schools, colleges and physical tuition centres. The e-portal aims to explore unknown aspects of India's lesser-known places and their rural and semi-urban culture. In a bid to promote cross-cultural communication in India, the initiative also aims to encourage students to learn regional languages like Punjabis can learn Gujarati and vice-versa. Patel released a film ‘Rahas’ — Raaslila of Chhattisgarh. The CCRT also started to publish books from a series called ’Untold Tales of India's cities’. Now, dropouts can learn music, dance and other cultural arts — with government aid

By Aditi Khanna London, May 1 () The UK government on Friday launched a new virtual cyber security school aimed at encouraging teenagers to learn new skills while stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown.As part of the free lessons, youngsters can learn how to crack codes, fix security flaws and dissect criminals' digital trails while progressing through a game as a cyber agent. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS) said this will help them develop important skills needed for future jobs, particularly in cyber security."This new initiative will give teenagers something fun and educational to do from home and provide them with a glimpse into the life of a cyber security professional," said UK Digital Infrastructure Minister Matt Warman."We have a world-leading cyber sector which plays a crucial role protecting the country and our digital economy, so it is absolutely vital we continue to inspire the next generation of tech talent to help maintain the UK's strong position," he said.The school will provide free weekly webinars run by industry experts teaching fundamental security disciplines such as digital forensics, cryptography and operating systems. Thousands of young people are being encouraged to join the initiative to create the UK's next generation of professional cyber defenders."At a time when schools remain closed to most children, the online initiative aims to inspire future talent to work in the cyber security sector and give students a variety of extracurricular activities to do from the safety of their homes," DCMS said.The move comes as the government announces a number of other online training courses to give UK school pupils the opportunity to learn and develop cyber security skills, including the launch of the National Cyber Security Centre's (NCSC) popular CyberFirst summer courses. The courses are moving online this year to help more than a thousand 14 to 17-year-olds develop important cyber skills from home during the coronavirus pandemic. NCSC Chief Executive Officer Ciaran Martin said: "Technology is helping us all cope with the coronavirus crisis and is playing an essential role in keeping our businesses moving and our society connected."It has never been more important for our young people to keep engaged and learn how to protect our digital world - and I'm delighted to see our instructor led CyberFirst summer courses made available online."Enrolled students will learn how to code and carry out cybersecurity operations in an instructor-led virtual classroom to help guide the students through the programme and build a sense of camaraderie within each cohort.The National Crime Agency and Cyber Security Challenge UK will also offer teenagers the chance to access their online cyber skills platform CyberLand for free during the coming months. In the game designedto teach teenagers the fundamentals of cyber security, players protect thevirtual city "CyberLand" from cyber attacks while learning key skills."Many young people have a keen interest in technology and have developed impressive cyber skills. The virtual cyber school and CyberFirst programmes are great initiatives which will support this next generation of cyber defenders in realising their potential," said Jim Stokley, Deputy Director at the NCA's National Cyber Crime Unit."We've also partnered with Cyber Security Challenge UK to offer free access to their online platform Cyberland where young people will find games that encourage them to improve cyber skills safely and legally," he said.
