Pakistan's military has incredible sway in the country and may now feel forced to retaliate against India, its nuclear rival. </li><li><strong>With China closely backing Pakistan and the US supporting India, Pakistan and India's rivalry has long been seen as a potential flash point for a global nuclear conflict.</strong></li></ul><p>Pakistan on Tuesday hinted at a possible nuclear retaliation to Indian airstrikes in its territory, which came as a great embarrassment to Islamabad, where the politically powerful military apparently failed to do anything about an outright attack from its chief rival.</p><p>India bombed Balakot, Pakistan, in response to a terror attack that killed 40 Indian troops in the disputed region of Kashmir, which India and Pakistan both claim but jointly administer.</p><p>"What happened is embarrassing," Asfandyar Mir, a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for <keyword id="6356001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="international">International</keyword> Security and Cooperation at Stanford University, told Business Insider.</p><p>"The fact that India was able to intrude into Pakistani airspace, not into the disputed region, but into the country, very close to the place where the US raid to kill Osama Bin Laden happened... this is embarrassing for domestic audience," said Mir. </p><p>Pakistan vowed retaliation at a time and place of its choosing, which it said would come as a surprise to India. Pakistan even called a meeting of their National Command Authority, or the group that makes the calls on when to use nuclear weapons, and hinted it was mulling a nuclear strike.</p><p>But in other ways, Pakistan's response furthered the shame of the attack. </p><h2>Pakistan being trolled online</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Stringer</span></p><p class="caption">Pakistani air force personnel check a JF-17 Thunder fighter jet ahead of the China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, or Zhuhai Airshow, in Zhuhai in China's Guangdong province, October 31, 2018.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span>"Our air force was ready but since it was night they could not assess the damage so they waited and now there is clear direction that if there is any other similar attack, we will respond adequately," Pakistan's defense minister said at a press conference. </span><a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/68174996.cms?utm_source=contentofinterest&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_campaign=cppst"></a></p><p><span>Indians on social media latched on to the first part of the quote, which appeared to make an excuse for Pakistan's inaction in face of the attack and viciously mocked Pakistan.</span></p><p><span>Maj. Gen. Asif Ghafoor, the spokesperson for Pakistan's military, said that Pakistan's air force did indeed respond and chased away the Indian jets, but the Indian side totally refutes this. </span></p><p><span>Ghafoor t<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pakistan-hints-nuking-india-after-airstrikes-escalate-white-hot-feud-2019-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">weeted pictures of cratered patches of dirt and twisted metal</a> which he said was evidence of India's failed attack, but this didn't blunt the gleeful and taunting response from Indians online. </span></p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pakistan-hints-nuking-india-after-airstrikes-escalate-white-hot-feud-2019-2">Pakistan hints at nuking India after cross-border airstrikes roil the white hot feud</a></em></p><p><span>Both sides agree that India struck Balakot, but the results of the strike remain unclear and hotly disputed, with India claiming that as many as 300 militants were killed, and Pakistan saying only trees and some houses were hurt. </span></p><p><span>Around the country, Indians celebrated what they saw as vengeance for the terror attack earlier in February. </span></p><p><span>But there's reason to believe that the online mockery could lead to real life bloodshed.</span></p><h2><span>Online mobs and blood lust</span></h2><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Akhtar Soomro </span></p><p class="caption">A Pakistani flag flies on a mast as paramilitary Frontier Corps soldiers talk while guarding at Karachi's District Malir prison, August 23, 2013.</p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>Mir said that there will be intense pressure on Pakistan, both Prime Minister Imran Khan and the military, to strongly respond. In the immediate aftermath of the Indian airstrikes, reports of gunfire across the line of control in Kashmir and fighter jets flying above Islamabad, Pakistan's capital, flooded Twitter.</span></p><p><span>On Facebook and other social media platforms, both Pakistan and India have fielded intensely bloodthirsty online commenters that constantly mock and antagonize the other side. </span></p><p>"The online militias, they are certainly representative of the sentiment on the ground. In many ways, they are also stoking nationalism," said Mir. </p><p>In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist party faces a looming reelection, and in Pakistan, the military faces pressure from young nationalists to look powerful after being caught off guard. </p><p>Mir said that Balakot is close to Abbottabad, the location of the US Navy SEALs raid that killed Osama Bin Laden, which also shamed Pakistan.</p><p>'This is the second time Pakistani air defenses were caught sleeping, at least as known to the Pakistani public," said Mir.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kashmir#/media/File:Kashmir_region_2004.jpg">CIA via Wikimedia Commons</a></span></p><p class="caption">Political map of the Kashmir region districts, showing the Pir Panjal range and the Kashmir valley or Vale of Kashmir.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"India is not the US. Even at times when there is a civilian government in charge, the military tends to have enormous power," he continued, adding that Pakistan's prime minister cannot act independently and would need the consent of the military before making any bold moves. </p><h2>Nuclear conflict unleashed</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Public Domain</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Not only does Pakistan's military likely feel the need to strike back to save face, India completely unleashed its military to freely conduct war in retaliation for the terror attack. </p><p>Normally the US would step in and intervene to urge calm and an end to fighting, but this time around the US has done no such thing.</p><p>Mir said that with the US's State Department's Southeast Asia division busy negotiating a peace deal with the Taliban and guiding a summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, there's little focus on this conflict between two nuclear-armed states. </p><p>The one notable comment the US did make defended India's right to self-defense while placing the blame on Pakistan for harboring terror groups. </p><p>With China closely backing Pakistan and the US supporting India, Pakistan and India's rivalry has long been seen as a potential flash point for a global nuclear conflict.</p>      <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-el-chapo-joaquin-guzman-really-like-cartel-wives-2017-10">What El Chapo is really like, according to the wife of one his closest henchman</a></h3>        <div>                    </div>    </div>

Pakistan clings to its nukes after embarrassing air battle beating and intense mockery from India

We were asking them: 'What have we done? You can ask the villagers if we are lying, if we have done anything wrong?' But they didn't want to hear anything, they didn't say anything, they just kept beating us.</p><p style="padding-left: 40px;">"They beat every part of my body. They kicked us, beat us with sticks, gave us electric shocks, beat us with cables. They hit us on the back of the legs. When we fainted they gave us electric shocks to bring us back. When they hit us with sticks and we screamed, they sealed our mouth with mud.</p><p>One of the men then said that they asked the soldiers to: "Just shoot us."</p><p>"I was asking Allah [God] to take me, because the torture was unbearable," he continued.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-49481180">BBC</a></span></p><p class="caption">Two brothers in a Kashmir village told the BBC that they were beaten badly by Indian army officers.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The BBC did not name the men, noting that they declined to reveal their identities for fear of persecution. It also did not name the six villages it visited, but said they were in southern Kashmir and were known hubs for anti-India resistance.</p><p>Many people in Jammu and Kashmir state, which is mostly Muslim, either want total independence or unity with Pakistan.</p><p>The Indian army has denied all the allegations in the article, telling the BBC that they are "baseless and unsubstantiated," and there have been "no injuries or casualties due to countermeasures undertaken by the army."</p><p>Col. Aman Anand also told the BBC that "these allegations are likely to have been motivated by inimical elements."</p><p>The High Commission of India in London has not yet responded to Business Insider's request for comment.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-49481180">BBC</a></span></p><p class="caption">A man in Kashmir showed the BBC photos of these bruises from what he said were beatings by Indian security forces.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Here are details of the other allegations reported by the BBC:</p><ul><li>One man said he was pushed to the ground and beaten with "cables, guns, sticks, and probably iron rods," by 15 to 16 soldiers, and that they "pulled my beard so hard that I felt like my teeth would fall out."</li><li>A man whose brother had joined the Hizbul Mujahideen, a prominent anti-India and pro-Pakistan militant group in Kashmir, had his hands and legs tied, was hung upside down, and beaten "very badly for more than two hours."</li><li>Another man said Indian security forces ordered him to take off his glasses, clothes, and shoes, and proceeded to beat him "mercilessly with rods and sticks" for almost two hours when he said he didn't know and couldn't name any anti-India protesters in his village.</li><li>"Whenever I fell unconscious, they gave me shocks to revive [me]," the man said.</li></ul><p>The Indian army told the BBC in a statement that it had "not manhandled any civilians as alleged," and that "security forces operate strictly to ensure civilians' safety and security."</p><p>"The Indian army is a professional organization that understands and respects human rights," it added, according to the BBC.</p><p>Earlier this month India <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kashmir-india-accuse-bbc-reuters-lying-about-protests-despite-video-2019-8">accused the BBC and Reuters of reporting fake news</a> about widespread anti-India protests in Kashmir, and of police officers using tear gas and pellet guns to disperse the crowds.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kashmir-man-blinded-pellets-police-insist-no-major-injuries-2019-8">A man in Kashmir says he was blinded in one eye after being shot by police pellets. <p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p><p>Snap Inc says is has "nothing to hide" from a lawsuit filed by a former employee who claims the company inflated key user metrics ahead of its IPO.</p><p>The former employee, Anthony Pompliano, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fired-snapchat-employee-pompliano-lawsuit-ipo-2017-1">first sued Snap in January</a>, alleging that the company falsified its growth metrics. He claimed to have been abruptly fired in 2015 after he raised the issue with senior leadership at the company.</p><p>Snap, which makes the Snapchat app popular with teens, has so far fought to keep the majority of Pompliano's complaint, which describes his allegations in detail, heavily redacted. Pompliano <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fired-snapchat-employee-wants-to-unseal-lawsuit-about-snapchat-user-metrics-2017-4">asked to make his full allegations public last week</a>, and on Tuesday Snap obliged by unsealing his original complaint.</p><p>The now-public details of Pompliano's tumultuous, three-week tenure at Snap include allegations that the company lied about having 100 million daily active users in 2015 and inflated other user metrics. His complaint also describes multiple interactions with Snap leadership, including a meeting in which CEO Evan Spiegel allegedly said that the app is "only for rich people."</p><p>Here are the highlights:</p><ul><li>While he was being recruited from Facebook to lead Snap's growth team in 2015, Pompliano alleges that Snapchat executives falsely told him that the app had reached over 100 million DAUs and was seeing double-digit, month-over-month growth. He also claims that Snap printed the number on brochures to show advertisers and shared the false stat with investors.</li><li><span>After joining Snap, Pompliano claims that he uncovered a "wide-spread, systematic failure in Snapchat's internal controls over its user data." Instead of showing over 100 million DAUs, he says that one analytics system Snapchat used called Flurry showed 97 million DAUs, while another called Blizzard showed 95 million.</span></li><li>Pompliano also claims that Snap chief strategy officer Imran Khan asked him to violate a non-solicitation and non-compete agreement he signed with Facebook. "Mr. Khan called Mr. Pompliano into his office for a meeting on September 4, 2015, and demanded that Mr. Pompliano draw a detailed organizational chart of Facebook, name the key employees, and identify which ones were particularly talented and could be poached by Snapchat," according to the complaint.</li></ul><p class="source"><span>Getty/Michael Kovac</span></p><p class="caption">Snap CEO Evan Spiegel.</p><ul><li>While other executives boasted of Snapchat's user growth, Pompliano alleges that "DAU growth was actually often flat" and sometimes ranged from 1-4% per quarter between January and September 2015. </li><li>While Snap claimed to have 40% retention rate (a metric for how many new users continue to use a service), Pompliano says he found Snapchat's actual retention rate to be "closer to 20%."</li><li>Evan Spiegel and other executives allegedly boasted that 87% of users completed the app's registration process, but the data showed the real number to be less than 40%, according to Pompliano.</li><li>During a September 2015 meeting with Pompliano and Snap executives, Spiegel allegedly said that it was "no big deal" that the company had inflated its DAUs. Pompliano said he proposed ideas about adding users in international markets that already heavily used other social networks, like Spain and India. "This app is only for rich people," Spiegel allegedly responded. "I don't want to expand into poor countries like India and Spain."</li></ul><p>Snap has said that Pompliano is a "disgruntled former employee" and that his claims are without merit. A spokesperson declined to comment further when reached by Business Insider on Tuesday.</p><p>Pompliano's lawyer, John Pierce, said in a statement on Tuesday that Snap withdrew its motion to seal his complaint because the company knew "it was flat wrong on the law and would lose its motion in court."</p><p>Snap has filed a motion to return Pompliano's lawsuit to private arbitration, where the litigation began before he filed publicly in LA court in January. Snapchat says it has 'nothing to hide' from lawsuit that claims it inflated growth metrics

Rishi Kapoor — the romance king of the 80's and Bollywood's beloved 'Chintu' — passes away at 67

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://snap.netroadshow.com/retail/roadshow.aspx">Snap Inc.</a></span></p><p class="caption">Snap CEO Evan Spiegel.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Snapchat executives hit the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/snapchat-roadshow-schedule-2017-2">road on Friday </a>to lure investors into what could be the biggest tech-sector stock offering in years. </p><p>The schedule of meetings will take them to London on Monday, and New York on Tuesday, and eventually across the US. And if it's like other high-profile tech deals of recent years, they'll draw a standing room only crowd of analysts and fund managers looking to get a feel of what the buzz is about.</p><p>Already, though, Snap Inc. has raised some eyebrows on Wall Street. After people close to the company floated the idea that it would be valued at up to $25 billion - for months - it hits the road with a price range that puts its maximum value at closer to $22 billion.</p><p>It's not a massive difference, but it was enough to raise the question of what happened. There are plenty of reasons for investors to be skeptical of the company's disappearing message app. One is simply that its user base is young, and that means plenty of decision makers on Wall Street won't even understand what it is. </p><p>Snap knows this and <a href="http://snap.netroadshow.com/retail/roadshow.aspx">one video posted on its website for investors Friday</a> is simply a lesson on how the app works. People close to the company said that preliminary meetings with investors and analysts, late last year, included this lesson. </p><p>Then there's the question of its valuation. Even if $22 billion is lower than it might have sought, the company only reported $400 million of revenue in 2016 and no profits. Also, it has a share structure that means investors paying that will get no say in how it is run. </p><p>So is that all getting baked into the price already? Maybe. <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-snap-ipo-valuation-idUSKBN15V0JK">Reuters reported</a> that one reason for the slightly lower valuation reflected feedback from those preliminary meetings. </p><h2><strong>Playing it safe </strong></h2><p>One person close to the situation told Business Insider that Snap is playing it safe with the intention of going higher as soon as demand merits. Conversely, asking for the full $25 billion and being forced to roll it back if investor demand isn't high enough would be a worse outcome that taints the company's trading debut. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>The company said Thursday it was seeking to price shares at $14 to $16, but this person - who asked not to be identified discussing the situation - said the only acceptable price, in reality, will be $16 per share or more. </p><p>This person expects Snap's order book to be oversubscribed, meaning there will be demand for more shares than it is selling.</p><p>"If you look at Twitter, Facebook, or Alibaba, there's a pretty <span>consistent playbook that many companies run," a pre-IPO investor in Snap, who also asked not to be identified, told Business Insider. "They come up with range that's very attractive and then they walk it up."</span></p><p><span>A spokesperson for Snap declined to comment.</span></p><h2><strong>So is it worth it?<br /></strong></h2><p><span>Among the risks investors are likely to focus on is a slowdown in user growth. In the fourth quarter, for example, Snap says it had 48% more users than a year earlier. That's the slowest growth rate for any of the 12 quarters for which it reported numbers. <br /></span></p><p><span>"The deceleration in user growth is a clear indicator that Snap is losing its snap," said Lee Bressler, portfolio manager at Carbon Investment Partners, a small hedge fund. "Instagram's stories feature is a direct competitor and will continue to take market share. He wants his existing users to really enjoy the product and is focused on innovating to make it more usable. </span></span></span></p><p>Part of that means users must have higher-end smart phones. Snapchat works best on iPhones, and while some problems persist on Android and other phones, Spiegel says he will not dilute the product to make it work on every phone.</p><p>So unlike Facebook, which has nearly 2 billion users around the world, Snap will not focus on non-iPhone-using customers in places like the developing world because those markets are not easily monetized. The logic is that advertisers want to reach North America and develop Europe rather than the rest of world. </p><p>In <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/snapchat-roadshow-snap-executives-explain-why-investors-should-buy-ipo-2017-2/#snap-cso-imran-khan-is-in-charge-of-growing-the-apps-business-the-entire-nature-of-our-product-is-that-its-active-not-passive-he-says-24">the company's roadshow materials</a>, it said its biggest revenue opportunity is the growing budget for worldwide mobile advertising, which could reach $196 billion by 2020 from $66 billion currently.</p><p>Snap's business is to "create the best camera platform so we can drive engagement and monetize that engagement through advertising," Chief Strategy Officer Imran Khan said in the video.</p><h2>Growing revenue</h2><p><span>Focusing on revenue growth makes sense for Snap's executives because of the blistering pace at which sales are increasing. The company sold its first ad at the end of 2014, but really started to monetize the business with the hire of Khan in 2015. His team grew revenues from $58.7 million in 2015 to $404.5 million in 2016. They estimate the company will turn its first profit in 2020.<br /></span></p><p><span>Certainly, the company's existing backers are betting that the stock will be more like Facebook - which is up 250% since its 2012 debut - and less like Twitter. <br /></span></p><p><span>Of course, Facebook's stock famously tanked in the months after its debut, losing about half of its value and raising questions about its pricing, though the company has now far surpassed that initial valuation. </span></p><p>"While on an absolute basis, the valuation appears high from an investor's risk/reward perspective, I think Snap becomes very much the next Instagram, or possibly bigger," the existing Snap investor, whose fund has a $150 million stake in the company, told Business Insider.</p><p>Instagram, a photo-based social media network, is owned by Facebook. </p><p><span>Facebook has "consistently tried to kill Snapchat off," the investor added.
