New Delhi: Shares of Federal Bank on Tuesday jumped 8 per cent after the firm posted an 11 per cent increase in net profit to Rs 1,057 crore in the September quarter. The stock climbed 8 per cent to Rs 199.55 on the BSE. At the NSE, it soared 7.83 per cent to Rs 199.49. The lender had earned a net profit of Rs 954 crore in the year-ago period. The total income increased to Rs 7,541 crore during the quarter under review against Rs 6,186 crore in the same quarter last year, Federal Bank said in a regulatory filing on Monday. The bank reported an interest income of Rs 6,577 crore during the quarter, higher than Rs 5,455 crore in the same period a year earlier. Net interest income (NII) grew 15 per cent to Rs 2,367 crore, as compared to Rs 2,056 crore in the same quarter a year ago. As regards asset quality, the bank witnessed an improvement with gross non-performing assets (NPAs) declining to 2.09 per cent of the gross loans by the end of September 2024, from 2.26 per cent a year ago. Similarly, net NPAs, or bad loans, moderated to 0.57 per cent from 0.64 per cent at the end of the second quarter of the previous fiscal year.

"The housing market is in part frozen because of lock-in with low rates. People don't want to sell their home," he said. It was not until her most recent pregnancy that she also started to use an AI chatbot on the fem-tech app Soula, which she said helped with reducing depressive symptoms and reassuring her about her mental health."It tells me: 'Welcome back, LeRonika. Your reactions are natural,'" said Francis, who is based in New Iberia, Louisiana.The AI chatbot called "Dua" also sent her some videos that she could watch about self-hugging, a practice that could reduce stress levels."I feel like Dua is there more than anything. It really showed me: OK, this is what you could do. Make sure you make time for yourself, too, because that's important as well," said Francis.Soula was co-founded by Natallia Miranchuk and Andrei Kulik, who conceptualized a 24/7 AI doula that could close the gap in mental health support for mothers during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Rather than replacing medical providers, apps such as Soula aim to increase broader access to maternal healthcare. "A human could talk about all their experience and what they've seen and give referrals. When you reach that limitation with an AI, it has to have the ability to hand over care or make a referral in a way where people don't feel dropped."<h2 id="245c9b56-b4a4-4a1a-abbc-5f6bbf950f49">The role of a doula</h2>The AI chatbot Dua aims to function like a doula, providing mothers with information about the pregnancy experience during a time of transition.Doulas are trained professionals who can provide non-medical, continuous physical, emotional, and information support for women before, during, and after childbirth, helping to <a target="_blank" href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10292163/">reduce</a> mental health-related morbidity for the mother and reduce infant mortality rates.Access to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/reproductive-health/what-is-a-doula">doulas</a> can be costly. While there's Medicaid coverage for doulas in several states, not all private health insurance plans cover these expenses. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0266613821003120">Long wait times and socioeconomic inequality</a> also contribute to increased levels of stress and lack of healthcare usage among mothers and pregnant people."Traditionally, it's been something that's been available only to folks with a lot of money and a lot of resources. The people that benefit the most from doula care are those that might not trust the healthcare system," said Dr. Devon Rupley, an attending physician and OB/GYN specialist at NYC Health. For $22 per hour, she helped improve the chatbot by using it "hand-in-hand" during her pregnancies, adding in her expertise.While asking questions on Google could yield more informational responses, Pacheco said mothers would want something that provided "more of that reassurance that Google wouldn't."For Armani Grant, a Soula user who became pregnant at 18, Google felt overwhelming. The chatbot allowed her to ask questions that she wouldn't feel comfortable asking her mother. Pacheco said many women she's worked with reported similar experiences."They might even feel incompetent to ask the question, which no woman should ever feel, but with my history of working with people, they definitely tend to revert to: I'm sorry, I'm asking this question for some reason, and that might just be because of the societal pressure that more medicalized doctors have put on people that they don't give the time and day to us," Pacheco said.The app isn't meant to completely replace a doula. Moreover, retention rates of AI healthcare chatbots can be low, said Johannes Eichstaedt, a computational social scientist and assistant professor of psychology at Stanford University. The high dropout rates for healthcare apps are "an elephant in the room," he said.At the same time, Pacheco said AI bots can help "calm nerves" and fill the gaps when patients feel they are "bothering" their healthcare providers."AI isn't like a healthcare provider to give you guidance, but it's supposed to be there to give you a little bit more comfort," Pacheco said.

The AI app Soula seeks to improve healthcare access for pregnant women

Performing light-intensity exercises for a short duration was found to have improved the <keyword id="20178149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blood-flow" source="keywords">blood flow</keyword> to <keyword id="19914811" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="children" source="keywords">children</keyword>'s cerebrum, known to help with <keyword id="20943924" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cognition" source="keywords">cognition</keyword>, according to a recent study. The study by Japan's <keyword id="22926399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Waseda-University" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Waseda University" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Waseda University">Waseda University</keyword> enrolled 41 healthy children from fifth-grade elementary to third-year junior high school students to find out how short-term, light-intensity exercises affected the blood flow to <keyword id="21319112" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prefrontal-cortex" source="keywords">prefrontal cortex</keyword>, located in the cerebrum and known to handle cognitive functions. Researchers focused on exercises that can easily be performed on the spot without special equipment, such as stretching. Most of the exercises were performed while seated, with movements lasting 10 to 20 seconds. The team used an imaging technique -- functional near-infrared spectroscopy -- to measure changes in blood flow to the <keyword id="19985684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="brain" source="keywords">brain</keyword> by looking at concentrations of oxyhaemoglobin (that carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues) while at rest and during the <keyword id="20067991" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exercise" source="keywords">exercise</keyword>. According to the findings published in the <keyword id="20069357" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="scientific-reports" source="keywords">Scientific Reports</keyword> journal, the researchers found a significant increase in oxyhaemoglobin levels in multiple regions of the prefrontal cortex during all forms of exercise compared to the resting state. "By combining the types of exercise that easily increase blood flow in the prefrontal cortex identified in this study, it is possible to develop an exercise program that everyone can easily engage in to improve children's executive functions. It may also be used in the future to prevent cognitive decline in adults and the elderly," said Takashi Naito, one of the authors and a doctoral student at Waseda University. The authors further wrote that the study implies that short-duration, light-intensity exercises, provided that they entail a certain degree of cognitive and/or physical demands, can activate the prefrontal cortex and increase blood flow. Previous studies have shown that physical exercise improves cognitive function in many ways such as by improving blood flow to the brain, by causing structural changes in the brain and by promoting the forming of new brain cells, or neurons. However, as children around the world have been shown to insufficiently engage in physical exercise, leading to high levels of sedentary behaviour, the authors said that the study's results offer potential solutions. The study is a significant step forward in combating sedentary lifestyles and activating brain functions in children, thereby supporting their physical and mental growth, they said. "Our goal is to develop a light-intensity exercise program that is accessible to everyone, aiming to enhance brain function and reduce children's sedentary behaviour," Naito said.

GE HealthCare is tapping into AI to improve clinical support — an initiative led by the company's first-ever chief AI officer

The <keyword id="23021375" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="domestic-passenger-vehicle-industry" source="keywords">domestic passenger vehicle industry</keyword> volumes declined by low single digit in August 2024 as compared with August 2023, because of weak retail demand trends and higher <keyword id="21396778" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="inventory-levels" source="keywords">inventory levels</keyword> at the dealerships according to Kotak Institutional Equities. The report suggests that the major reason for the sluggishness in sales of tractors is the uneven spatial distribution of rainfall, particularly in northern and eastern regions. It also highlights that growth will pick up in the coming months on the back of <keyword id="23021373" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="improved-monsoon" source="keywords">improved monsoon</keyword> conditions. The upcoming festive season will also improve the situation as traditionally it is a peak period for auto sales. Strong festive demand could help offset some of the losses experienced in the first half of the fiscal year. The weak wholesale figures in August were driven by private vehicles (PV), commercial vehicles (CV) and tractor original equipment manufacturers (OEM). Retail sales declined in single digits (yoy) for most of the companies. The PV segment saw a low single-digit decline in domestic wholesale volumes year-on-year (YoY) in August 2024, driven by weak retail demand and elevated inventory levels at dealerships, which stood at approximately 70 days. The retail sales fell by mid-single digits YoY during the month. Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL), the largest player in the segment, reported a 4 per cent YoY drop in total volumes, including a 5 per cent decline in domestic sales but it was partially offset by a 6 per cent rise in the export volumes. MSIL's wholesale market share is estimated to have slipped by 250 basis points YoY to approximately 40.5-4 per cent says the report. Other major players also faced challenges in sales. Tata Motors recorded a 3 per cent YoY decrease in PV volumes, while Hyundai Motors reported an 8 per cent drop. However, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) bucked the trend with a 16 per cent YoY increase in PV volumes, and Toyota India posted a significant 37 per cent YoY growth on low volumes. Kia and MG Motors also experienced an uptick in sales. The two-wheeler (2W) segment showed resilience with high single-digit YoY growth in domestic wholesale volumes, largely driven by channel filling ahead of the festive season. Retail sales of the internal combustion engine (ICE) two-wheelers grew by mid-single digits YoY, while electric two-wheeler (EV 2W) sales surged by 41 per cent YoY, propelled by new mass-market EV launches and attractive discounts. Among the key players, Hero MotoCorp (HMCL) saw a 5 per cent YoY rise in volumes, and TVS Motor reported a robust 14 per cent YoY increase, with growth in both domestic and export segments. Bajaj Auto's volumes grew by 18 per cent YoY, driven primarily by domestic sales. However, Royal Enfield faced a 5 per cent YoY decline in volumes. Going forward, the report highlighted that the Commercial Vehicle (CV) segment underperformed during the month, with domestic volumes declining by low double digits YoY, primarily due to weakness in the Medium and Heavy Commercial Vehicle (MHCV) truck and Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segments. Tata Motors experienced a 15 per cent YoY drop in domestic CV volumes, with sharp declines in Small Commercial Vehicle (SCV) cargo (down 23 per cent) and MHCV trucks (down 15 per cent). Ashok Leyland also reported a 7 per cent YoY decline in CV volumes, while VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV) managed a modest 1 per cent YoY increase. In August, the domestic tractor segment remained flat YoY with volumes coming in 5-6 per cent. During this period, M&amp;M's tractor volumes grew by 1 per cent YoY, while Escort Kubota's volumes remained unchanged compared to the same period last year. The report says that strong festive demand could help offset some of the losses experienced in the first half of the fiscal year, particularly if economic conditions and consumer sentiment improve.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Airports are looking to private wireless networks to improve operations, execs said at MWC Las Vegas.</li><li>Passengers could see benefits like smoother baggage claim and check-ins, the panelists said.</li></ul>Private wireless networks are key to ushering in a better airport experience for both the travel hubs' operations and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/busiest-airport-world-atlanta-dubai-tokyo-heathrow-dallas-list-ranking-2023-12">the billions of passengers who pass through them</a>.That's according to airport executives who spoke on a panel about connected aviation Tuesday at the trade show <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mwc-las-vegas-2024-5g-ai-mobile-communications-conference-2024-10">Mobile World Congress Las Vegas</a>.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/las-vegas-private-5g-network-2023-9">Private networks</a> generally offer greater security and reliability, lower latency, and higher bandwidth compared with public networks. For these reasons, they can help airports with operations and communications, plane and baggage tracking, and security.California's Ontario International Airport, for example, is using a private wireless network to run its perimeter-intrusion detection system, Charles Miwa, the airport's chief information officer, said."As I think about a future with a lot of growth, private wireless is foundational. It's going to enable us to accommodate these ad hoc moves," he said, emphasizing the need for flexibility given how often many airports do some form of construction to update their infrastructure."We're trying to run more efficient airports, more customer-friendly airports," said Michael Youngs, the vice president of information technology at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, which last year announced a $10 million deal with AT&amp;T for a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-frequency-is-5g">private 5G network</a>."We're not going to do it with people. We're not going to do it with brick and mortar. We're going to do it with technology, with IoT, but we need that base foundational level of connectivity, private wireless, that's going to enable it," he added, referring to the Internet of Things.Private wireless networks can also help enterprises with cost and mobility by reducing the expense of installing cables and by providing connectivity to areas that might be harder to reach with wires."We traditionally at the airport, especially, do not put anything very secure across wireless. We just don't do it," said Kyle Mobley, the director of information technology at the Port of Oakland, which operates the San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport. "And it's not because we have any proof it's going to be less secure in the way we do it. It's the what you don't know."Mobley added: "Having this infrastructure wirelessly is huge." Mobley spoke of using private wireless for passenger traffic sensors, for example."It's tough to keep sending people out in the field to investigate things at 2 o'clock in the morning," he said. "And we cover such a wide area that getting these sensors — lidar, cameras, whatever it ends up being — in every corner of our property is huge to give that person working that desk the ability to know what's going on. Do I have a squirrel running up the fence, or is it somebody? The squirrel will sometimes send 10 cars out there, and that's not very efficient."Roughly 58% of airports worldwide that participated in the survey are investing in major development programs for a 5G communications network, and another 29% have research-and-development programs for the tech by 2026, said the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.sita.aero/globalassets/docs/surveys--reports/2023-air-transport-it-insights-v6.1.pdf">2023 Air Transport IT Insights</a> report from SITA, an IT and telecommunications service provider for the aviation industry, and Airports Council International.As for passengers, they might see benefits like quicker <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/heres-what-to-do-when-an-airline-loses-your-luggage-2022-7">baggage claim</a> or smoother check-ins."I'm not really looking to be in the private-wireless business — I feel like I have to be in the private-wireless business," Youngs said. "I need to harness data to take our airport forward. That's really the end game."

Airports are investing in private wireless networks to improve operations and travelers' experience

Ever since 2022, when inflation hit a 40-year high of 9%, Americans have been pissed off about the economy. In a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2024/05/23/publics-positive-economic-ratings-slip-inflation-still-widely-viewed-as-major-problem/">survey</a> conducted by the Pew Research Center in May, only 23% had a positive view of economic conditions. And when asked to identify "very big problems" facing the country, their top concern wasn't immigration, gun violence, crime, or healthcare — it was inflation. Pollsters say the sour economic mood could help tip the election to Donald Trump, as voters continue to fret over the price of milk and meat.But the thing is, wages have actually caught up with inflation. Prices are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-september-cpi-consumer-price-index-federal-reserve-interest-rates-2024-10">moderating</a>. Unemployment is low. Inequality is shrinking. Financially, Americans are better off than they were before prices took off during the pandemic. So why is everyone still fixated on inflation?The answer may lie in a new paper published by the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w32956">National Bureau of Economic Research</a>. Traditionally, economists (being economists) have focused on the economic costs of inflation — i.e., are price increases wiping out everyone's annual raise? But the new study, intriguingly, examines the emotional cost of inflation. How do high prices make people feel, regardless of their financial circumstances?The key, researchers found, lies in the relationship between inflation and wages. In a normal economy, the small raises companies give are enough to offset the minimal inflation we typically see. But when prices spike, companies still default to giving more or less the same <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/salary-increase-2023-projections-raise-inflation-jobs-wages-income-2022-10">small raises</a>. That presents workers with a dilemma. Do they accept the tiny increase and watch their standard of living fall? Or do they ask their boss for a bigger raise?In a survey of 3,000 workers, researchers found that most — a whopping 79% — just accepted the salary they were offered. Only 21% took action to secure a bigger raise. And doing that put them in a situation people really hate: They had to enter into conflict with their employer. Trying to land a bigger raise meant doing things like having a difficult conversation with their boss, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/salary-raise-controversial-tactic-job-interview-counteroffer-employer-2022-11">securing a job offer from a different company</a> to use as negotiating leverage, switching jobs entirely, or having their union negotiate on their behalf. Inflation, in other words, requires people to fight for better pay, which takes a toll on their emotional well-being."We find that conflict with employers is costly to workers," the researchers write. "Inflation imposes costs on workers beyond its impact on real wages."The study found that workers are so averse to conflict, most avoided negotiating for a raise even though they believed that doing so would have paid off financially. Those who didn't put up a fight knew they were paying a price: Had they gone to bat for themselves, they predicted, they would have boosted their salary by 2 percentage points. The fact that they didn't suggests something powerful: Most people hate conflict so much that they'd rather leave money on the table rather than speak up for themselves. The median worker, the researchers calculated, was willing to give up 1.75% of their salary to avoid the anxiety and hassle of negotiating. Most of us, it appears, would rather let inflation screw us over than put the screws to our boss.Thinking about inflation this way — as having both an economic and an emotional cost — helped me make better sense of all the strife that's been roiling the American workplace in recent years. Some of it, as I've reported, was spurred by the red-hot job market during the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-great-reshuffle-upward-mobility-quitting-jobs">Great Resignation</a>, which shifted the balance of power between workers and their employers. Some of it arose from the ongoing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/employees-defying-orders-return-to-office-great-resistance-remote-work-2022-7">war over remote work</a>. And some of it has been driven by historic shifts in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/loyalty-employee-employer-job-security-broken-work-companies-bosses-2024-1">social contract</a>, as white-collar professionals began facing the same threat of mass layoffs that blue-collar workers have long experienced.But now, poring over the new study, I realize I overlooked the role inflation has played in reshaping the pandemic-era workplace. In recent years, I've repeatedly heard a sense of injustice from the workers I've spoken with — a feeling that there's something fundamentally unfair about having to accept what is essentially an inflation-adjusted pay cut. HR departments don't benchmark salaries against inflation, but employees think they should. And the faster prices rise, the study found, the more contentious the workplace becomes.Reading the research, I recalled a conversation I'd had with a friend who had fought for a raise. To force her boss to pay her more, she secured a competing offer from another company. She wound up getting what she wanted — but she still felt resentful. Why couldn't her employer just pay her a fair salary to begin with? She hated having to go through all that drama.I get how hard and frustrating it can be to ask for a raise. I spent most of my career unwilling to stomach the conflict involved in negotiating a higher salary. The first time I ever <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/salary-pay-transparency-jobs-income-taboo-equity-2023-1">asked for more money</a>, in fact, was during this recent stretch of super-high inflation. And even then, I agonized over the decision. I didn't want my boss to think I was greedy or ungrateful, and I worried I would feel rejected if he turned me down. I drafted and redrafted my request more times than I'd care to admit — and I literally write about this stuff for a living. Turns out I'm just like everyone in the study: Even when I wound up getting a raise, I left the experience wishing that inflation hadn't forced the confrontation in the first place. Rising prices took a toll on me, beyond their financial impact.That, in a nutshell, is why inflation makes us so mad: It dredges up all the complicated feelings we have about our relationship to our employers. Will asking for a raise make us seem disloyal? Will not asking for a raise make us feel like chumps? And why do we have to fight so hard to make sure our paychecks keep up with the rising cost of living? In a normal economy, when inflation is low, we don't have to think about that stuff. But when high prices start eating into our paychecks, we're forced to reconsider the value of our labor — and how hard we're willing to fight for it. Our response to inflation isn't about the price of eggs.
