The person wrote to Ichiro that they had gotten Ichiro's number from Alex Rodriguez and wanted to meet Ichiro to study his stretching routine.</p><p>From Gammons:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"'What's the guy's name?' asked one of the coaches.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Ichiro strolled to the end of the text. 'Some guy named Tom Brady. Who the f--- is Tom Brady?'"</p><p>Like Brady, Ichiro is obsessed with stretching and remaining flexible, particularly as he's gotten older. According to Gammons, Ichiro has a "<span>nine-station workout and stretching contraption that Ichiro had designed for himself in Japan and takes everywhere, keeping stretched-out and at maximum strength every day, no matter where he is."</span></p><p><span>Suzuki recently retired at 44 years old and is set to move to a front office role with the Seattle Mariners. His career has been a model of longevity, with over 20 combined seasons of professional baseball in Japan and the Major Leagues. Tom Brady texted Ichiro Suzuki about his stretching routine, but Ichiro had no idea who he was

<p>The chart below, which looks at the career hits, by age, of the three players with 4,000 career hits, suggests that Ichiro's 4,000 career hits actually compares quite favorably. In fact, his time in Japan may have actually hurt his total (see explanation below the chart)...</p>

<p>Both Ichiro and Cobb started their careers at age 18 with Ichiro joining MLB at age 27. By the age of 27, Cobb had 1,600 career hits, 322 more hits than Ichiro at the same age. In Rose's first five seasons, before turning 27, he had 899 hits, 46 more than Ichiro during the same age span.</p>
<p>In other words, Ichiro was not putting up crazy numbers in Japan. In fact, he collected fewer hits, in large part because the NPB played just 130- or 135-game seasons at the time while Rose played 162-game seasons and Cobb played 154-game seasons.</p>
<p>However, in Ichiro's 13 seasons in MLB, he has collected 2,722 hits, <a href="https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/370473473396596736">the most ever in a 13-year span</a>. In the 13 years after turning 27, Rose had 2,658 hits and Cobb had just 2,300 hits.</p>
<p>Ichiro doesn't get credit for the 1,278 NPB hits in the MLB record books. But it is easy to see that if he had started his career in MLB at age 18, he would still have 4,000 hits, and probably more.</p>

<p>Ichiro picked up his 4,000th career hit combined between Japan and the United States. Fittingly, it was a slap-single to left field and it came off of R.A. Dickey of the Blue Jays.</p>

Ichiro Gets His 4,000th Career Hit

<p><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:402px"><div class="image"></div><p class="source">Getty Images</p></div>Yankees outfielder <keyword id="1744534" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ichiro-Suzuki">Ichiro Suzuki</keyword> <a href="http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2013/05/02/ichiro_suzuki_rents_23500month_pad_on_central_park_north.php">is renting an apartment on Central Park North in Harlem</a> for $23,500 a month, according to Curbed.com.</p>
<p>The New York Post reported that both Yankee stars <a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/realestate/residential/up_for_grabs_xagNQjggyyc2B1M37PrtMP">Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez looked into buying the place for $9 million</a>, but Ichiro ended up scooping it up for rent.</p>
<p>The apartment is 5,400 square feet and has six bedrooms and 6 and a half bathrooms.</p>
<p>It also has 100 feet of outdoor terraces and a beautiful view of NYC's Central Park.</p>

He also has no plans to hang his cleats up in the near future. </p><p>On Wednesday, <a href="http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/mlb/miami-marlins/article141551584.html">the Miami Herald</a> caught up with Ichiro and he told them he had every intention of playing into his 50s. </p><p><span>"I'm not joking when I say it," he <a href="http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/mlb/miami-marlins/article141551584.html">said</a>. </span>Nobody knows what the future holds. But the way I feel, how I'm thinking, I feel like nothing can stop me from doing it. When you retire from baseball, you have until the day you die to rest."</p><div><p>Ichiro also had a somewhat morbid response when asked what he will do when he does finally retire.</p><p>"I think I'll just die," he <a href="http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/mlb/miami-marlins/article141551584.html">said</a>.</p></div><p><span>Considering his commitment to the sport, and to staying in shape, it's hard to question his commitment to playing. </span></p><p><span><a href="http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/mlb/miami-marlins/article141551584.html">According to the Herald</a>, t</span>he last time he took a full vacation was in either 2004 or 2005:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">The last time he took [a vacation] - 2004 or '05, he doesn't recall which - was a week-long trip to Milan, Italy. He worked out pretty much the entire time and said the excursion threw him out of sync for two or three weeks.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Never again, he vowed.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"That's the last time I took a vacation," he said.</p><p>These days, during the offseason he takes three or four days off before returning to his workouts, which <a href="http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/mlb/miami-marlins/article141551584.html">reportedly</a> take place in a cargo container the Marlins have bequeathed to him as a sort of personal gym.</p><p>He may be entering his 25th season playing professional baseball, and his 18th in MLB, but why would he give his body a break?</p><p>"Physically, unless you have some kind of injury, you don't really need a break," Ichiro <a href="http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/mlb/miami-marlins/article141551584.html">said</a>. "I think mentally you sometimes need a break. But for me, my body is built so that if I don't work out, that's when I put more stress on my body and get more tired. 43-year-old Ichiro Suzuki on what he will do when he finally retires years from now: 'I think I'll just die'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Shohei Ohtani has emerged as one of baseball's most exciting stars over the last three years.</li><li>Ohtani was one of <keyword id="6355311" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="japan">Japan</keyword>'s biggest baseball stars before achieving <keyword id="133010" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="MLB">MLB</keyword> fame in America. </li><li>Mike Trout said Ohtani's experience in Japan was key in helping him adjust to the hype in the US.</li></ul><p>Japan might be a better place to prepare for baseball fame than American minor leagues, according to the game's biggest superstar. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/mike-trout-flavor-of-sports-drink-during-games-2021-4">Mike Trout</a> has watched his Los Angeles Angels teammate Shohei Ohtani establish himself as a legitimate two-way player over the last three years, with <a href="https://www.insider.com/mlb-star-japanese-babe-ruth-shohei-ohtani-2021-4">pitching and hitting numbers</a> comparable to veteran All-Stars.</p><p>But from a mental perspective, Trout has seen Ohtani handle the fame and pressure of international MLB stardom in Los Angeles even more effortlessly. </p><p>"The hype was so real when he first came here; people had such high expectations," Trout told Insider. "Seeing the hype around him, and then seeing all the reporters, I'd never seen anything like that, and all this stuff he had to do with the media. It was just pretty crazy putting that much pressure on yourself with all those people watching. That's pretty special. You can't teach that."</p><p>Trout, a former first-round pick in the 2009 MLB Draft who's gone on to become a three-time AL MVP, is no stranger to the spotlight and pressure of MLB fame himself. Trout signed the third-richest contract in the history of international <keyword id="6356028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sports">sports</keyword> in 2019 with a 12-year $426 million deal. He was once even used as a positive <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/big-league-stew/president-obama-compares-farm-bill-mike-trout-during-060900443--mlb.html">metaphor by former president Barack Obama</a> for a bill he was trying to push through Congress in 2014. </p><p>As a player, Trout has often resisted opportunities to be showy and build on his fame like stars in other sports, to focus solely on putting together the best slugging and on-base percentage of any active player in baseball. </p><p>Trout, who's had to navigate plenty of attention himself, agrees that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shohei-ohtani-muscles-transformed-since-injury-2020-2">Ohtani's upbringing</a> in Japan conditioned the two-way star to handle pressure better than an American farm system experience. The experience Trout himself went through. </p><p>"As a young player coming up from the minors then getting up here is like trying to slow the game down. And I think Shohei was already doing that in Japan because he had all the attention," Trout said. "He was put through it already. He knows what the big moments are like and how to react."</p><div type="image" title="GettyImages 941619722" height="682" width="910" msid="82220526" hostid="261"></div><p>When asked if Ohtani's experience playing in Japan gave him an advantage over players that came up through the minors, Trout responded "absolutely."</p><p>Ohtani almost took the path of coming up through the American minor leagues. He initially announcing his plans to pursue an MLB career right out of high school in 2012. Still, he was drafted by the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in Japan's draft. The Fighters convinced him to start his professional career in his home country after a lengthy contract negotiation. </p><p>The decision to stay in Japan allowed Ohtani to captivate the loyalty of Japanese baseball fans much earlier than it would have taken him to make it to the majors. He became <a href="https://www.si.com/mlb/2018/04/17/shohei-ohtani-los-angeles-angels-pitching">a deity-like figure</a> for the Fighters and the entire country as a dominant young pitcher and hitter, an anomaly in baseball at any level.</p><p>"It's pretty remarkable with all the hype when he first came over, everybody wanted to see Shohei. And when I came up as a number-one prospect, it was very similar, but with him coming from Japan with the fanbase over there, it was a little bit bigger," Trout said. </p><p>Japanese baseball has produced other players who dominated the majors, most notably Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui, with World Series titles and MVP honors in their careers. Japan has also produced other high-performers like Masahiro Tanaka, Yu Darvish, and Kenta Maeda.</p><p>But the Japanese advantage that Trout believes in Japan is still very available to non-Japanese-born players . </p><p>Carter Stewart Jr. was drafted eighth overall by the Atlanta Braves in the 2018 MLB draft. Stewart, top pitching prospect, was drafted right out of high school in his home state of Florida. But he followed a path more similar to Ohtani's than Trout's, by signing with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks of NPB.</p><p>That decision allowed Stewart to sign for a $7 million deal - $5 million more than what the Braves were willing to offer him after discovering a wrist ailment in his post-draft physical, according to <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/carter-stewart-jr-former-top-10-pick-and-potential-trailblazer-makes-nippon-professional-baseball-debut/">CBS Sports</a>. </p><p>Stewart made his debut with the Hawks earlier this month and will be eligible for unrestricted free agency in four years at the age of 25, which is likely at least three years earlier than if he stayed with Atlanta. </p><p>Stewart could be a pioneer for young American players to look at Japan as a destination to start their baseball careers. Additionally, Ohtani's potential as a future superstar could soon make Japan the go-to country for talented young players worldwide.</p>

<p>Shinzo Abe's address to the New York Stock Exchange Wednesday -- which touched on everything from hot dogs and sushi to baseball and US heavy metal rock band Metallica -- repeatedly mentioned the anti-hero of the 1987 film "Wall Street".</p>
<p>"Today, I have come to tell you that Japan will once again be a country where there is money to be made, and that just as Gordon Gekko made a comeback in the financial world... so too can we now say that 'Japan is Back'," Abe said.</p>
<p>The Oliver Stone-directed film portrays Gekko as a corporate raider who is ultimately sent to prison on insider trading charges and other securities violations. His memorable line that "greed...is good" became a popular symbol of 1980s excess.</p>
<p>Actor Michael Douglas, whose performance netted him an Academy Award, reprised the role in the 2010 sequel "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" which chronicles Gekko's release from prison and subsequent redemption.</p>
<p>"What the prime minister wanted to say the most was that 'Japan is Back'. And in the sequel, Gordon Gekko was redeemed, wasn't he?" top government spokesman Yoshihide Suga told reporters.</p>
<p>Suga was responding to questions about why Japan's leader had cited a cinematic convicted criminal as an inspiration for a policy blitz aimed at reviving the country's long-limp economy.</p>
<p>Abe noted that the original film a quarter-century ago portrayed Japan as an economic powerhouse, while in the sequel "the investors that appear are Chinese -- Japan is conspicuous only in its absence", reflecting its two-decade slide.</p>
<p>The premier's speech, on the eve of his appearance at the UN General Assembly, pointed to hopes that sushi carts would one day be lined up alongside New York City's famous hot dog vendors -- apparently confirming Japan's revival.</p>
<p>New York Yankees star Ichiro Suzuki and Japan's super-efficient bullet trains also got a mention in a speech that finished with a reference to the Metallica song "Enter Sandman".</p>
