The company is building a second plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. It will be paid for by replacing a quarter-cent county sales tax passed by voters in 2017 that also funded anti-homelessness programs with a permanent half-cent sales tax.Pro-housing advocates celebrated Measure A as a major victory for the lowest-income households in LA — and a model for the rest of the country. Yonah Freemark, a researcher at the Urban Institute who's closely followed this and other housing measures, said it offers a path forward for cities serious about boosting housing affordability.Measure A, he argued, is "the kind of thing we're going to need to see from state and local governments if the federal government pulls back on supporting affordable housing investments."LA Mayor Karen Bass, who pushed for Measure A, has made addressing homelessness a top priority in a city with tens of thousands of unhoused residents. Chapel Hill similarly supported a measure to spend $15 million on affordable housing, while Asheville approved $20 million in additional bonds for its housing trust fund, which will mostly go toward low- or no-interest loans for affordable housing developers.The city of Baltimore similarly passed $20 million in additional affordable housing bonds.<h2 id="ac5b128c-3e28-443e-8b1b-f3244c50d35e">Shoring up housing trust funds in New Orleans and Orlando</h2>In New Orleans, a majority of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nola.com/gambit/news/the_latest/voters-back-workers-bill-of-rights-affordable-housing-fund-in-new-orleans/article_014112f6-9c27-11ef-b465-13dca0ac6ed9.html">voters supported a measure</a> to create a dedicated housing trust fund for affordable housing construction, boosting aid for first-time homebuyers, and rehabilitating affordable rental housing.The measure will require the city, which faces a steep shortage of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.housingnola.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Gap-Report_2023.pdf">more than 47,000 affordable homes,</a> to invest at least 2% of its annual general budget in the trust fund, amounting to about $17 million annually.Orlando, Florida, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.clickorlando.com/results-2024/2024/11/06/all-orange-county-charter-amendments-pass-in-the-nov-5-2024-election-see-the-results/">also shored up</a> its housing trust fund, which supports the construction and preservation of affordable housing.<h2 id="79af5b7e-a2db-4194-808c-907ef8c832da">Denver rejects $100 million a year for affordable housing</h2>The pro-housing movement also took some hits on Tuesday, perhaps most notably in Denver, where voters <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.axios.com/local/denver/2024/11/06/denver-ballot-measures-election-results">are poised to reject</a> a sales tax to fund affordable housing construction. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://coloradosun.com/2024/10/17/denver-ballot-issue-2r-explained/">Ballot Issue 2R</a> would have raised the city sales tax by five cents on every $10 spent and used the revenue — an expected $100 million a year — to build new affordable housing. The measure was expected to create about 40,000 new homes over the next 10 years, as well as provide rental assistance for low-income tenants and downpayment assistance for certain homebuyers.<h2 id="ad5669e5-a801-48ba-afcb-e0ed438619c3">Mixed response to rent control</h2>At the same time, voters across the country delivered mixed responses to rent control and stabilization measures.In California, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-11-05/california-election-night-proposition-33-and-proposition-34">voters rejected Prop 33</a>, which would have repealed a state law that limits how much cities can control rent — including by prohibiting rent control on single-family homes and on all housing built since 1995. Currently, the city limits rental increases to 25% between tenants.Proponents of stricter rent control say preventing landlords from price gauging is key to protecting the most vulnerable tenants. But rent stabilization is controversial among pro-housing advocates. Some advocates and economists argue that it discourages new construction and investment in housing, worsening the housing supply shortage.Freemark argued that it's unclear what the mixed results on rent control mean for the pro-housing movement."Rent control is such a fraught subject in the housing world, so I'm not sure how much to read into it," he said.

According to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/dvs/marriage-divorce/national-marriage-divorce-rates-00-22.pdf">CDC's analysis</a> of 45 states, the divorce rate was around 2.4 per 1,000 Americans in 2022, down from around 4 per 1,000 in 2000.Still, a couple's retirement assets might feel the damage of a breakup. The average married retiree has over $100,000 more in their 401(k) and savings accounts than a divorced retiree. This might be because settlements caused retirees to split or completely lose access to the accounts, said Melody Evans, a vice president wealth management advisor at TIAA, a retirement and wealth management firm.Indeed, there are ways to protect assets from divorce. BI's analysis found that the average income of a married retiree is $2,577 a month, considering money they might receive through pensions, Social Security, retirement accounts, and insurance benefits.A divorced retiree, however, takes home $1,940 a month. "Maybe that's because one spouse didn't spend as much time in the workforce, maybe they helped in the households differently."On the whole, according to Business Insider's data analysis, retired women's finances fall behind men. Men's monthly retirement incomes are nearly $600 more than women's — $2,610 to $2,042 — and they're more likely to have a balance in a retirement account. Among retirees with retirement accounts, men have, on average, $318,727 socked away, regardless of marriage status. Women have $239,706.Kathryn Clark got married as a teenager and raised her sons in California's Bay Area. After Clark finished her GED, she worked a series of roles in the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/accountant-shortage-sexy-taxes-business-school-pwc-kpmg-2024-8">accounting</a>, healthcare, and tech industries — and was oftentimes the main household income earner.When Clark finalized her divorce around the time she turned 50, she had been married for three decades. Unemployment, median annual income, and the share of people with advanced degrees were the metrics used to create the ranking."In our ranking, majors are considered valuable if they lead to higher <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-paying-college-majors-six-figure-salary-tuition-engineering-jobs-2024-3">salaries</a>, lower unemployment rates, and require the least amount of education because we were really just focused on bachelor's degrees," Alex Gailey, a Bankrate analyst, told Business Insider.Still, Gailey said not everyone cares about their salary, and instead, people may put more emphasis on other career aspects, such as pursuing a certain field where they think they can make a difference.Below are the majors that made the top 10 in Bankrate's ranking:The top nine most valuable majors had median salaries of at least $100,000. Actuarial science at No. 10 didn't fall too behind in its median salary, at $95,000. Petroleum engineering had the lowest unemployment rate among the top majors and one of the lowest overall. Materials science, at No. 5, had the highest share of people with advanced degrees among the majors at the top of the ranking.The major that ranked the lowest overall was studio arts. This had a median salary of $40,000 and an unemployment rate of 4.6%. While studio arts and other types of art degrees ranked toward the bottom, Gailey said that doesn't mean these degrees aren't worth it, but they do tend to have higher unemployment and lower median pay than others.Gailey said obtaining an engineering degree "at an affordable public college is likely to guarantee a fairly solid investment" because of the job opportunities available right after graduation."Whereas attending a private college with high tuition costs for, let's say, a fine arts degree may be riskier," Gailey said. "It doesn't mean it's not going to pay off in the long run, but it could be riskier because part of the equation is what costs you're incurring on the front end and how the outputs exceed essentially what you're paying."Despite how financially valuable some degrees could be, not everyone feels college is necessary to get a job. Gailey said younger people are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/student-loans/is-college-worth-it">questioning getting a bachelor's degree</a>. Gailey pointed to survey results of US adults from the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2024/05/23/is-college-worth-it-2/">Pew Research Center</a> that highlight how people feel about the need for college."Roughly half (49%) say it's less important to have a four-year college degree today in order to get a well-paying job than it was 20 years ago," Pew Research Center said.Gailey said while college is an investment, getting a bachelor's degree can generally pay off, especially in terms of long-term earnings, and "there are ways to lower those upfront costs of college." That can include attending community college and then transferring credits to a four-year school.Gailey pointed to an analysis from the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.newyorkfed.org/research/college-labor-market#--:explore:wages">Federal Reserve Bank of New York</a> of full-time workers and their pay that showed recent grads with a bachelor's who are between 22 and 27 years old had a median annual wage of $60,000 in 2023.
