New Delhi [India], July 25 (ANI): As of June end, a cumulative <keyword id="19895437" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="investment" source="keywords">investment</keyword> of Rs 8282 crore by 32 companies is done under the <keyword id="19981336" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="production-linked-incentive" source="keywords">Production-linked incentive</keyword> (PLI) scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing in the country. The Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, <keyword id="21073640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jitin-Prasada" source="keywords">Jitin Prasada</keyword> informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply on Wednesday. Out of the 32 companies approved under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing, 7 are greenfield companies and 25 are brownfield companies. Out of the cumulative investment of Rs 8,282 crore made under the scheme till June 30, 2024, the cumulative investment made by greenfield companies is Rs 3,136 crore, and the cumulative investment made by brownfield companies is Rs 5,146 crore. The minister also informed the lower house that, 27 companies were approved under <keyword id="8941225" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="PLI-Scheme" source="Orion">PLI Scheme</keyword> 2.0 for <keyword id="21064214" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-hardware" source="keywords">IT hardware</keyword>, 6 were greenfield companies, and 21 were brownfield companies, and a cumulative investment of Rs 464.66 crore was made by them for IT hardware till June 30, 2024. The investment made by Brownfield companies is Rs 386.09 crore, and that of Greenfield companies is Rs 78.57 crore. The PLI scheme for large-scale <keyword id="650801" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electronic-manufacturing" source="Orion">electronic manufacturing</keyword> was notified on April 1, 2020, thirty-two companies were approved with a committed investment of Rs 11,324 crore and a projected production target of Rs 10,70,000 crore. The PLI scheme for IT hardware was notified on March 3, 2021, and PLI scheme 2.0 for IT hardware was notified on May 29, 2023. Under the PLI Scheme for IT Hardware, 14 companies were approved with a committed investment of Rs 2,517 crore and a committed production target of Rs 1,60,751 crore. Under the PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware, a total of 27 companies were approved with a committed investment of Rs 2,955 crore and a committed production target of Rs 3,51,647 crore. 13 out of the 14 approved applicants for IT hardware have been migrated to PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT hardware. The minister informed the house that the government has not changed the production or investment criteria under the PLI Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing, the PLI Scheme for IT Hardware, or PLI 2.0 for IT Hardware after the selection of the companies under the scheme. However, to provide relief to companies approved under the PLI Scheme affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the tenure of the PLI Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing has been extended by one year, i.e., from 2024-25 to 2025-26. Participating companies could exercise the option of choosing a period of any five years until 2025-26 to meet their production targets under the scheme. (ANI)

The Centre on Wednesday approved an updated production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for IT hardware, nearly doubling the overall outlay for the scheme to around Rs 17,000 crore. The tenure of the programme will be applicable for six years and the government expects investments worth Rs 2,430 crore in the scheme. "This move will help more Indian companies grow and they can combine design and manufacturing to become global brands. We believe that the final investment in the <keyword id="17437864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-hardware-PLI-2-0" source="Orion">IT hardware PLI 2.0</keyword> will be more than what we expect, just like the telecom <keyword id="8941225" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pli-scheme" source="Orion">PLI scheme</keyword>," IT and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters here. In the telecom PLI scheme, the expected investment was Rs 900 crore for the first year, but it reached Rs 1,600 crore in just one year. The <keyword id="16808207" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-hardware-PLI" source="Orion">IT hardware PLI</keyword> 2,0 will help push Rs 335,000 crore worth incremental production and is likely to generate 75,000 direct jobs. After the success of the PLI scheme in mobile phones manufacturing, the government has come out with PLI 2.0 scheme for the IT hardware sector that aims to boost domestic manufacturing and attract large investments and jobs over the coming years. Centre launches IT hardware PLI 2.0 with ₹17,000 crore outlay

New Delhi, Aug 9 (IANS) Top consumer electronics companies like HP, <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword> and <keyword id="28251" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="dell" source="Orion">Dell</keyword> have urged the government to extend the November 1 deadline for the licences required for PCs, laptops and tablets by at least and year, as it will take time to configure and set up manufacturing/assembling units as per new guidelines. In a meeting with the <keyword id="3428254" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-electronics-and-information-technology" source="Orion">Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology</keyword> (MeitY) officials on Tuesday, also attended by leading industry bodies the <keyword id="18336155" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="manufacturing-association-of-it-hardware" source="Orion">Manufacturing Association of IT Hardware</keyword> (MAIT) and the <keyword id="7825659" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india-cellular-and-electronics-association" source="Orion">India Cellular and Electronics Association</keyword> (ICEA), the tech companies conveyed to the government they need more time to set up manufacturing units in the country, according to sources. According to reports, some 44 companies, including some leading global players, have submitted applications for incentives under the production-linked incentive (PLI) 2.0 scheme for hardware. According to the notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), for clearance of import consignments with effect from November 1, 2023, a valid licence for restricted imports is required. The government has told tech companies that the restrictions are not to ban imports but to promote exports via domestic manufacturing, according to industry representatives who attended the meeting. The <keyword id="6474066" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="economic-times" source="Orion">Economic Times</keyword> was first to report on the development. The Central government earlier deferred its decision to restrict the import of certain categories of laptops and computers until November 1, allowing companies three-months time to import these devices. Post November 1, no entity will be allowed to import laptops, computers, and related items without a license. "Import consignments can be cleared till October 31, 2023, without a licence for restricted imports," the notification said, adding that liberal transitional arrangements will be notified for the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, and servers till October 31. This is a partial reversal from its August 3 order, which had imposed import restrictions on these devices with immediate effect. The government will provide incentives worth ₹7,350 crore over the next four years. It estimates that production will hit ₹3.26 lakh crore with exports worth ₹2.45 lakh crore led by five global champions and ten national champions. “Right now, the value addition of IT hardware is around 5-10%. In the next five years, this will increase to 20-25%,” said Prasad. The direct and indirect revenues generated from production under the new PLI scheme are expected to be ₹ 15,760 crore over next 4 years. Indian government wants its IT hardware industry to be as globally successful as TCS, HCL Tech and Infosys — announces PLI scheme worth ₹7,250 crore

As <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> doubles down on local manufacturing of electronics hardware, the country saw an investment of Rs 2,595 crore and production worth Rs 67,275 crore under the Production Linked Incentive (<keyword id="53367" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="pli" source="Orion">PLI</keyword>) scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing, of which, 31 per cent or Rs 20,568 crore worth products were exported (till June 2021), the <keyword id="13014635" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Economic-Survey-2021-22" source="Orion">Economic Survey 2021-22</keyword> said. The PLI for large-scale electronics manufacturing was notified on April 1, 2020 which provides an incentive of 4 to 6 percent on incremental sales (over base year) to eligible companies involved in mobile phone manufacturing and manufacturing of specified electronic components, including assembly, testing, marking and packaging (<keyword id="2035122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="atmp" source="Orion">ATMP</keyword>) units. According to the Survey, under the PLI scheme for IT hardware (notified on March 3, 2021) the total sales of manufactured goods in the target segment stood at Rs 503 crore, with Rs 16.50 crore investment (as per Q2 FY21). The target segment under the PLI scheme includes laptops, tablets, all-in-one PCs and servers. This PLI scheme extends an incentive in the range of 1 to 4 per cent on net incremental sales (over base year) of goods manufactured in India and covered under the target segment, to eligible companies, for a period of four years. Recently, the government approved an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore ($10 billion) for the development of semiconductors and display manufacturing ecosystem. "The government's intervention to boost this industry has come at a time when the global economy is facing an acute shortage of semiconductors due to severe disruptions in supply chains," said the Survey. The PLI and other schemes to boost semiconductors will not only help domestic companies to overcome the challenges posed by Covid-19 but also assist them to become globally competitive, especially in chip making, it added. Semiconductors are an integral part of modern technology used in automobiles and its components, electronic and medical devices. India saw production worth ₹67,275 crore under PLI for large-scale electronics, reveals Economic Survey 2021-22

<ul><li>Foreign direct investments into <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> is likely to gather momentum in 2024.</li><li>Healthy macroeconomic numbers, better industrial output, attractive PLI schemes will attract overseas players amid geopolitical headwinds and tighter interest rate regime globally.</li><li>Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes for sectors like pharma, food processing, and medical appliances have started yielding fruits and are attracting foreign investors.</li></ul>Foreign direct investments into India is likely to gather momentum in 2024 as healthy macroeconomic numbers, better industrial output as well as attractive PLI schemes will attract more overseas players amid geopolitical headwinds and tighter interest rate regime globally. To ensure that India remains an attractive and investor friendly destination, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said the government reviews <keyword id="44528" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fdi" source="Orion">FDI</keyword> policy on an ongoing basis and makes changes from time to time after having extensive consultations with stakeholders. In the January-September period this year, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the country declined 22 per cent to USD 48.98 billion. The inflow was at USD 62.66 billion in the year-ago period. "However, we are broadly in line with the overall trends of FDI growth. FDI inflows from 2014-23 period is about USD 596 billion, which is about double than what India received during 2005-14. The trend is positive and India is still the preferred destination for foreign players," Singh told PTI. According to him, Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes for sectors like pharma, food processing, and medical appliances have started yielding fruits and are attracting foreign investors. "Many of these sectors have seen a jump in FDI," Singh said. He said the major reasons for the shortfall in FDI inflows could include the threat of global recession, economic crisis due to Russia-Ukraine conflict and protectionist measures. A decline in real GDP growth rates of Singapore, the USA and the UK could also be a factor as these countries are major sources for FDI into India, he added. Singh also emphasised that India continues to open up its economy to global investors by raising FDI limits, removing regulatory barriers, developing infrastructure and improving the business environment. Experts also opined that despite the global challenges, India is still the preferred investment destination. Steps taken to promote ease of doing business, availability of skilled manpower, natural resources, liberal FDI policy, huge domestic market and PLI schemes are the reasons for optimism with respect to foreign fund inflows in 2024, they said. According to UNCTAD's World Investment Report 2023, the number of greenfield investment projects announced in developing countries increased by 37 per cent. "This is a positive sign for investment prospects in industry and in infrastructure," it said. Rumki Majumdar, an economist at consultancy Deloitte India, said the slowdown in capital flows has been more a function of tightening global liquidity and geopolitical uncertainties. "But soon the world will recognise the strength of the fundamentals India has and India will see capital flows rising," she said. Majumdar said there is a genuine interest among global investors to tap into the potential of India and be a part of the growth journey that the country is likely to see over the decade. Anindya Ghosh, partner at law firm IndusLaw, said it needs to be noted that global FDI has also dropped by a considerable margin and India can take some sense of comfort from the fact that it is not the only country bearing the wrath of the recent economic downturn. "While there has been a lot of concerns pertaining to the decline in FDI in India recently, statistics indicate that FDI inflows might witness a modest increase in the year 2024," Ghosh said. As per the National Statistical Office (NSO), the Indian economy grew 7.7 per cent in the first half of 2023-24. The country's foreign exchange reserve is above USD 600 billion and industrial production accelerated to a 16-month high of 11.7 per cent in October, mainly due to double-digit growth in the output of manufacturing, power and mining sectors. Also, PLI schemes that seek to boost India's manufacturing capabilities and exports have been announced for 14 sectors. The total outlay for the schemes is Rs 1.97 lakh crore and the sectors covered include white goods, telecom and auto components. During the period between April 2000 to September 2023, total FDI into India reached USD 953.14 billion. About one-fourth of the FDI came through the Mauritius route during the period under review. It was followed by Singapore (23 per cent), the US (9 per cent), the Netherlands (7 per cent), Japan (6 per cent) and the UK (5 per cent). The UAE, Germany, Cyprus, and Cayman Islands accounted for 2 per cent each. The key sectors which attracted the maximum FDI in India include services segment, computer software and hardware, telecommunications, trading, construction development, automobile, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. FDI is allowed through the automatic route in most of the sectors while in areas such as telecom, media, pharmaceuticals and insurance, government approval is required for foreign investors. Under the government approval route, a foreign investor has to take prior nod of the ministry or department concerned whereas under the automatic route, an overseas investor is only required to inform the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) after the investment is made. At present, FDI is prohibited in certain sectors. They are lottery, gambling and betting, chit funds, nidhi company, real estate business, and manufacturing of cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes using tobacco. FDI is important as India would require huge investments in the coming years for its infrastructure sector to boost growth. Healthy foreign inflows also help in maintaining the balance of payments and the value of the rupee. FDI inflows likely to rise in 2024 as India remains 'preferred investment destination

As PC and laptop makers urge the government to rethink its decision on import licensing requirements accompanied by a quota, the industry stakeholders have met <keyword id="296566" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="it-ministry" source="Orion">IT Ministry</keyword> officials to seek solutions on the matter. The meeting discussed proposed changes, like linking the import of IT hardware to the local manufacturing of a company value and its export value of electronic items, according to sources. The meeting on Friday was called to give suggestions on how the proposed import management system should work and get the stakeholders' feedback. Another meeting is likely to happen again next week to continue discussions on the issue. Last month, the <keyword id="7825659" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india-cellular-and-electronics-association" source="Orion">India Cellular and Electronics Association</keyword> (<keyword id="6816005" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="icea" source="Orion">ICEA</keyword>) wrote to the IT Ministry, requesting the government to rethink its decision on import licensing requirement accompanied by a quota, which was extended by 3 months until October 31, fearing that this may lead to price rise in consumer electronics products as companies are not yet prepared for manufacturing PCs, laptops and servers domestically at scale. The letter said that an overarching factor that should be taken into consideration in "avoiding supply chain disruption till domestic production ramps up" is that any "reduction in supplies or even an indication will lead to hoarding and market distortion". This, in turn, can push up consumer prices, "which will adversely impact not just key stakeholders such as students, but also those who are the core of growing the digital economy, i.e. start-ups, IT and ITES firms, BPOs". The industry seeks at least nine-month breather after the PLI for IT Hardware was launched. "The government may undertake a re-assessment of the investment pipeline and the supply situation before inviting the industry to discuss whether any further policy intervention is needed at that stage. It may be too early to assess the full implication of the new scheme before then," according to the letter. Where servers are concerned, the ICEA has received inputs that companies in that sector seek a relook at their inclusion in the proposed intervention. The Central government earlier deferred its decision to restrict the import of certain categories of laptops and computers until November 1, allowing companies three-months time to import these devices. Post November 1, no entity will be allowed to import laptops, computers, and related items without a license. The PLI 2.0 for IT hardware has garnered applications from 40 companies including global and domestic. The expected incremental production under the scheme is around Rs 3.35 lakh crore. PC manufacturers meet MeitY officials on import curbs, seek solutions

The government on Thursday tweaked the cumbersome licensing norms to import IT hardware products like <keyword id="6367615" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="laptops" source="Orion">laptops</keyword> and computers and put in place an <keyword id="19195766" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-authorisation-system" source="Orion">online authorisation system</keyword> for importers of these goods. The new licensing or authorisation regime, which will come into operation with immediate effect, is primarily aimed at monitoring imports of these products to ensure that they are coming from "trusted" sources, Director General of Foreign Trade (<keyword id="93457" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dgft" source="Orion">DGFT</keyword>) Santosh Kumar Saranagi told reporters here. After taking into account the concerns of stakeholders of the sector, some "tweaking" in the policy has been made, and an end-to-end online system was launched for importers, he added. The system, he said, will ensure that it will be faceless and contactless, and there will be no hassles for importers to fill in their details. The announcement assumes significance as the government announced on August 4 that an importer would need a license for the import of these goods from November 1, with a view to boosting domestic manufacturing and cutting imports from countries like China. The new license regime is applicable to laptops, personal computers (including tablet computers), microcomputers, large or mainframe computers, and certain data processing machines to ensure India's trusted supply chain. The DGFT also said that an importer can apply from now onwards on the system to seek authorisation for imports, and there would not be any restriction on quantity, value or country. The Department of Revenue is also involved in the preparation of the new system and the entire application process will take about 10 minutes, and the simple license will be issued in an automated manner. Companies in the "denied entity list" will not get the authorisations. Such lists include firms which have not fulfilled or defaulted export obligations by availing benefits of schemes like advance authorisation and Export Promotion Capital Goods (EPCG); or having DRI (Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) cases against them, Saranagi said. Companies willing to import second-hand goods or refurbished items would also not be allowed to apply for this authorisation as for those imports, the standard operating procedure is different. Though an online system has been put in place, these IT hardware products are still "under the restricted" category and "there is no change in that", Sarangi said. Speaking at the media briefing, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology S Krishnan said that the new mechanism was launched after holding an extensive consultation with the industry. The aim of the exercise is to promote domestic manufacturing of electronic goods, he said, adding there is no shortage of these goods in the country and in fact, more production will help in cutting down the prices. Applications for several companies have been approved under the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for large-scale electronic manufacturing. The import authorisation will remain valid till September 2024. On the post-September 2024 scenarios, Krishnan said the government will study the data, interact with the industry, and then, decide on ways to move forward. When asked whether the government will withdraw the August notification, the DGFT said it will not be withdrawn, and a clarification has been issued to give effect to the new online authorisation system for these imports. Sarangi also clarified that importers would not be required to register with them to seek authorisation. The DGFT provided several exemptions to different entities. In a notification, it said these IT hardware products manufactured in special economic zones (SEZ) can be imported into domestic tariff areas (outside SEZs) without any import authorisation on payment of applicable duties, if any. Activities like re-packing, labelling, refurbishing, testing and calibration alone within the SEZ are not considered as the manufacturing for availing this exemption from import authorisation. Private companies importing these goods for supply to central and state government agencies or undertakings or for defence purposes are also exempted from seeking this permission for imports. "However, these private entities at the time of import must provide to the customs authorities a valid end-user certificate issued by the relevant government entity," it said. SEZ units, export-oriented units, Electronics Hardware Technology Park (EHTP), Software Technology Park, and Bio-Technology Park are not required to obtain a "restricted import authorisation" for the import of these IT hardware, the DGFT said. The exemption is allowed only for the captive consumption of the importing units. There are no import restrictions on spares, parts, assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and other inputs necessary for these devices. Laptops/tablets accompanying machinery like MRI machines and unmanned aerial vehicles are exempted, as per the DGFT. However, if servers or laptops themselves are the primary capital goods, this exemption does not apply, it said, adding exemption is provided for up to 20 such items per consignment for the purpose of R&amp;D, testing, benchmarking, evaluation and product development. The restrictions are not applicable to imports under baggage rules, and import of one laptop, tablet, personal computer or ultra-small form factor computer, including those purchased from e-commerce portals through post or courier, is also exempted. "The importers are allowed to apply for multiple authorisations. The authorisations issued shall be valid up to September 30, 2024," the DGFT said in a public notice. After the issuance of an import authorisation, the quantity as mentioned on a valid authorisation may also be amended at any point, subject to the overall value of the import remaining unchanged. Further, an importer can track online their application in the new system and there will be an electronic transmission of the authorisation to the customs port of registration. A weekly video conference will be hosted by the DGFT to address issues and queries of stakeholders. While seeking the authorisation, an importer will have to provide an import item summary, and details of past import, export, and turnover. The government in August imposed import restrictions on laptops, computers (including tablet computers), microcomputers, large or mainframe computers, and certain data processing machines. Following this notification, the IT hardware industry had flagged concerns. India imported these goods worth USD 8.7 billion in 2022-23 against USD 10.3 billion in 2021-22 and USD 7.1 billion in 2020-21. The country has imported personal computers, including laptops, worth USD 5.33 billion in 2022-23 compared to USD 7.37 billion in 2021-22. In May, the government approved the Production Linked Incentive Scheme 2.0 for IT Hardware with a budgetary outlay of Rs 17,000 crore. In February 2021, the scheme was approved for IT hardware, covering the production of laptops, tablets, All-in-One PCs and servers with an outlay of Rs 7,350 crore. The main countries from where these goods were imported in the last fiscal include China (USD 5.11 billion), Singapore (USD 1.4 billion), Hong Kong (USD 807 million), the US (USD 344.7 million), Malaysia (USD 324.8 million), Taiwan (USD 272.5 million), Netherland (USD 132.8 million) and Vietnam (USD 126 million).

Till now the situation has not improved, so it is not possible to revert everything to normal. So, for a few more days, we have to follow the restrictions and continue with thelockdown. My appeal to all of you not to venture out of their homes now," she said.Banerjee announced the lockdown in the state from March 23 evening. Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed it across the country from March 25 to break the chain of coronavirus transmission and it was scheduled to be lifted on April 15. The 21-day measure was later extended for 19 more days till May 3.The chief minister said that from May 4, restrictions will be eased in green and orange zones where stand-alone shops of non-essential items will be opened."But there will be no relaxation for containment areas. The relaxation applies only to stand-alone shops and home delivery of non-essential items, not for market complexes or shopping malls," she said.Stand-alone shops selling electronics goods, stationery items, books, paints, hardware products, laundry, tea, and paan will be allowed to open in green and orange zones, she said. "Police will survey which shops will be opened. Hawkers' markets and shops on footpath won't be opened. Factories can open in green zones but they need to abide by all protocols," she said."We are yet to get clarifications from the Centre regarding its order last week on opening of shops in non-containment zones. Once we get that, we would take steps about extending the relaxation in some other areas," she added.Buses will also ply in green zones but will not carry more than 20 passengers at a time, she said adding that the vehicle should be sterilized at regular intervals. "Taxis also can operate in green zones, but with not more than three passengers," Banerjee said.She said the Economic Task Force has prepared a six-month economic rehabilitation plan.The TMC supremo also alleged that the BJP was indulging in politics at the time of this crisis."There are some people who are trying to spread rumours that there are no beds in hospitals of Kolkata to get admitted. Also, the function of providing your mobile number if the one-time password (OTP) will be sent on the email ID seems redundant. Users should have the option of providing one or the other. Necessitating both seems like an unnecessary load on data collection. The <keyword id="10824384" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="limitations-of-carbonwatch">limitations of CarbonWatch</keyword> While obviously helping a person gauge their carbon footprint and how their activities affect the environment around them, the CarbonWatch mobile app is not the most user-friendly — not in terms of the user interface, but the calculations. For instance, the carbon footprint score does not change even when you adjust the number of family members in a single household. This means the details of water consumption, electricity use, and gas consumption are not averaged out. The overall score is not for an individual, but the entire household. The app also only shows the latest recorded emission score. There is no historical data or a way to keep track of whether your emission score has gone up or down if you’ve changed the input values. This means the only way for you to track the changes in your carbon footprint is to note down the score manually or take pictures using secondary devices. Now, about the actual inputs. CarbonWatch asks users for their average units of freshwater billed per month in kilolitres. That means you need to have your utility bill on hand. There are no comparative guidelines on how you may be able to gauge your consumption based on how many buckets of water you use per month. The reason this is important is because not everyone rents an entire house, especially students or bachelors. They usually have a single room or only a part of the house for use. Hence, they may not necessarily have access to the utility bill. And, even if they do have access to it, the entire consumption of water does not rest on their shoulders. The same applies to the consumption of electricity. It would be easier if the app asked users what kind of lights they use (LED, CFL or other ordinary bulbs), how many are in the room or house, and how many hours, on average, they are switched on for. And, while it is useful to ask whether or not a user is segregating their waste, the app doesn’t ask for an estimate of how much waste is being produced in the first place. A score of 6.61 fairly high. And, the only basis of comparison is worldwide averages. In our case, it was much higher than India’s average of 1.81 or even the global average of 4.74 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. <div type="image" title="carbonwatch" msid="81203744" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Carbon footprint score is only compared to global averages&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> While helpful, it would be better if the consumption could be compared according to the locality you live in. CarbonWatch — India’s first mobile app to calculate your carbon footprint falls short of its promises

New Delhi, Apr 19 () The government's U-turn on home delivery of non-essential items will leave consumers disappointed, the world's largest online retailer Amazon said, but the decision was welcomed by local kirana store body CAIT that called it the "most pragmatic". Four days after allowing e-commerce firms to also deliver non-essential items such as electronic goods and readymade garments, the government on Sunday said non-essential items will continue to be prohibited during the lockdown period. Commenting on the decision, Amazon India said the new guidelines will disappoint consumers whose list of essentials has expanded to 'work from home' and 'study from home' products, as well as small businesses, sellers and manufacturers. The company said it will continue to follow the guidelines and deliver essential products and work with authorities for expedited processes to make safe deliveries of priority products possible. "The new guideline will disappoint not only the consumers whose list of essentials had expanded to work from home and study from home products but also the thousands of small businesses, sellers and manufacturers across the country, who had geared up in the last 48 hours to provide millions of people with safe access to products," Amazon India spokesperson said. Amazon India further said the company hopes that "this situation is rectified soon so that the urgent need of consumers is met and that there is revival of economic activity". The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), which had been campaigning hard against allowing e-commerce firms to also commence non-essential deliveries during the lockdown period, "lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for the most pragmatic decision" of "valuing the sentiments of Indian traders and protecting their business interests". Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on his part said the move will "help in creating a level-playing field for small retailers". Separately, the Retailers Association of India (RAI) said the government's home delivery permissions need to be broad based and all types of retailers, including neighbourhood stores, should be allowed to operate. The retailers' body said allowing neighbourhood stores and large essential products' chain retailers to do home delivery will help fulfil consumer needs in these trying times and play a part in enhancing social distancing. Soon after the government had on April 16 announced graded plan to lift the lockdown by allowing all e-commerce deliveries and movement of trucks, some states such as Maharashtra, Odisha and Rajasthan issued notifications allowing non-essential deliveries alongside essential ones. CAIT had resented the move and said that the state governments were against Indian traders and "prefer to destroy the businesses of Indian traders at the hands of foreign e-commerce players". "Multinational e-commerce players have been trying to disrupt the businesses of small Indian traders by adopting unfair business practices such as deep discounting and predatory pricing by controlling inventory. Even in the lockdown period, they would have adopted their vitiated business model and promote all kinds of malpractices to damage the foundation of Indian retail," CAIT said in a statement on Sunday. The home ministry on Sunday issued an order saying the following clause -- "E-commerce companies. Vehicles used by e-commerce operators will be allowed to ply with necessary permissions" -- is excluded from the guidelines issues. Players like Paytm Mall have urged the government to expand the ambit of essential goods to include products like laptops and mobile phones to facilitate people working from home. "Safety of fellow Indians is of utmost importance to us and, therefore, we support the government's decision in spirit to limiting e-commerce operations to essentials. However, we believe that the ambit of essential goods should be increased," Paytm Mall Senior Vice-President Srinivas Mothey said. He added that people in the country are mostly working from home at the moment but many are finding it difficult as they are running low on certain items necessary to effectively operate under lockdown. "Laptops, mobile phones, and accessories, computer hardware, webcams, all these things should be allowed to be part of essential goods. If the lockdown continues, lack of proper technical support would hinder the efficiency of employees which in turn would affect a company's operations," he said. Sanjay Sethi, CEO and co-founder of ShopClues, echoed similar sentiments. "It is imperative to expand the definition of 'essential goods'. In fact, not doing so could be counterproductive at this time," he said. He added that while the entire nation is forced indoors and working from home for extended period, it is important that besides products like food, groceries and medicine, one also ensures supply of other critical items like small kitchen appliances, personal hygiene items, work from home essentials like phones, laptops and accessories. Under the first phase of the nationwide lockdown between March 24-April 14, the government had only allowed delivery of essential goods through e-commerce platforms. On April 16, the Ministry of Home Affairs issued fresh guidelines for the current lockdown allowing e-commerce companies to sell non-essential items as well. A Snapdeal spokesperson said the company will continue to operate in complete compliance with the guidelines issued by the government in this regard. Nasscom President Debjani Ghosh tweeted that the decision could have been "better thought through". "This could have been better thought through... a lot of the eCommerce cos have invested in planning for the 20th. And most don't have deep pockets to handle these kinds of reversal in decisions. This week they carried out the same maneuver on beaches east of where Russian naval forces will carry out their tests starting Thursday.Earlier this month, the USS Harry S.
