Indian Institutes of Technologies (<keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword>) seem to be the Indian government’s ray of hope for increasing the level of education in the country, which is why it has decided to open six <keyword id="530930" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="new-IITs">new IITs</keyword>, at Tirupati, Palakkad, Dharwar, Bhilai, Goa and Jammu. ISM Dhanbad, on the other hand, will soon get an upgrade to become an IIT. 
 
The Union Cabinet had a meeting that saw it giving an ex post facto approval to amend The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. The act would now be changed to legally incorporate new IITs at Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), Palakkad (Kerala), Dharwar (Karnataka), Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), Goa, Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir), while also converting Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad to an IIT. 
 "The approval will bring six new <keyword id="6386086" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Technology">Indian Institutes of Technology</keyword> within the ambit of The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 and declaring them as the institutions of national importance," said an official statement. 
 
Other than this, the decision to set up NIT, Andhra Pradesh was also approved by the cabinet; the institute has been registered as a Society under the Andhra Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2001. 
 
The bill, viz. the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (Amendment) Bill, 2016 for inclusion of the NIT, Andhra Pradesh was also approved. 
 
"The proposed amendments to the NITSER Act, 2007 will ensure a high level of public accountability and increased participation of the stakeholders in the administration and academic activities of the Institute," the statement said.

Six new IITs in pipeline, ISM Dhanbad to be upgraded

The company, through its ongoing virtual hiring process, has already made around 250 offers in the recent hiring season at premium education institutes like <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-madras">IIT Madras</keyword>, <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIt">IIT</keyword> Guwahati, IIT BHU, <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword>, IIT Delhi, IIT Roorkee, <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword>, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, IIT Hyderabad and other IITs. "L&amp;T not only offers Graduate and Post Graduate Engineer Trainees (GETs &amp; PGETs) continuous learning opportunities and a growth path but also gives them immense satisfaction to work on projects that are high on the top of national or global pecking order," company's chief executive and managing director S N Subrahmanyan said. In 2021, it is planning to hire 1,100 engineers and has already made offers to 250 IITians, he said. Every year, the company recruits around 1,100 plus engineers, 90% of which belongs to premier institutes like IITs, NITs, and top government engineering colleges, the company said. During this pandemic year also, the company has kept its momentum of hiring from best of the institutes and has introduced its internally built online hiring platform to facilitate 100% remote recruitment, Subrahmanyan said. "The Graduate Engineer Training (GET) programme has several alumni and leaders serving in leadership positions at the company. This signature programme known for its selection rigour has very high aspirational value in the best campuses across the country," added Subrahmanyan. The entire hiring process of L&amp;T is digital and remote, including the testing process which is conducted with the help of remote proctoring tool which monitors the test based on 14 parameters. The platform used for hiring has been developed internally by the company. The company said this hired talent will be put to an internally developed induction program for over three weeks. The programme inducts talent into business and functional aspects of L&amp;T and imparts experiential learning and hands-on technical sessions. This is also an opportunity for these youngsters to interact with the senior leadership of L&amp;T and get acquainted with the strategy and core values of the organisation. Despite pandemic-related challenges, the company kept its commitment and completed over three-week virtual induction process for all freshly hired GETs &amp; PGETs of 2020 batch through digital and remote mode in August 2020, the company said. 	The amendment will also help convert ISM, Dhanbad into an IIT by bringing it into the ambit of the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961.
 

	The Cabinet also gave ex post facto approval to set up NIT, Andhra Pradesh which has been registered as a Society under the Andhra Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2001.
 

	The Cabinet also approved introduction of a bill - the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (Amendment) Bill, 2016 for inclusion of the NIT, Andhra Pradesh in its first schedule, another statement said.

Union Cabinet Gives Approval To 6 New IITs

The premier technological education institutes, <keyword id="55119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IIT) is going international. No not by expanding the campuses but inviting foreign nationals to be a part of the programmes. As planned, IITs will be holding entrance examinations outside India and there would be a 10% additional seats to accommodate foreign students. 
 
"Foreign candidates will have to qualify the JEE advanced examination for an IIT seat. The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for entry to MTech courses will be held in these six countries as well," an official informed the Economic Times. Foreign candidates, however, will not have to take the JEE main examination. 
 
The official clarified that the there would be no decrease in the number of the seats for Indian students. "The 10% intake is in addition to the existing seats available in each of the 23 IITs,” he added. 
 Also, 20,000 more candidates will be eligible to write the exam after clearing JEE main, thus taking the total number to 2,20,000. The examination will be held in six countries outside India - Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE, Nepal and <keyword id="6356662" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Singapore">Singapore</keyword>. The number of foreign students can't exceed 10% of the total seats in each course offered by the IITs and ISM-Dhanbad, as per the news report on the ET. There is no quota in this category. Also the cut-off for the aggregate marks in Class XII for SC and ST candidates has been reduced from 70% to 65% in JEE advanced 2017. 
 
Increase in fees Candidates who register for entrance exams after due date would be allowed to fill up the forms after paying a late fee of Rs 500. There has been an increase in registration fee from Rs 1,200 from Rs 1,000 for girls and reserved category students and to Rs 2,400 from Rs 2,000 for others. Students coming from <keyword id="8470" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAARC">SAARC</keyword> countries will need to pay $135 (Rs 9000) and those from the other countries would pay $270 (Rs 18000).
