The fake app and website look eerily like the original, which makes it difficult for end users to distinguish between the two. Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is a state-owned service that allows users to book rail, air, bus and hotel tickets. The fake IRCTC app for Android smartphones goes by the name ‘irctcconnect.apk’ and is being circulated via WhatsApp and Telegram. Given that it’s very trivial for Android users to manually install an app using an apk file, IRCTC had to issue an advisory to warn users about the fake app. The fake IRCTC app used by hackers to target passengers also has an accompanying website – https://irctc.creditmobile.site – which looks to have been blocked now. “Fraudsters’ aim is to get sensitive net banking credentials, including UPI details and credit/debit card information, from victims who fall prey to the smishing attack,” the IRCTC warning said. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Android safety 101" comment="subhead" text="Android safety 101">Android safety 101</cmsannotation> One of the easiest ways of staying safe while using an Android device is by not clicking on unknown links or installing apps from unknown sources. <ul><li>Newer versions of Android require users to allow app installation from unknown sources to be enabled on a per-app basis. If you cannot directly verify this, it is recommended that you search for the company’s website. Popular search engines like Google or Bing usually surface the official website as the top search results, so that is another way to make sure to verify the authenticity. </li><li>One of the most common vectors of stealing information and phishing attacks is via one-time passwords – if you receive an OTP without having requested it, simply ignore it and never share it with anyone. </li><li>Users are also recommended to always keep their apps and software up to date. </li><li>Android smartphones also come with app verification via a service called ‘Play Protect’. From its issue price of ₹320, IRCTC share price rose to ₹728 by the time the markets closed. Its stock price rise was also aided by healthy global cues also pushed the Sensex up by 150 points in early trade, though it ended adding 87 points for the day. Owned by the Indian government, IRCTC is the only authorized company that sells Indian Railway tickets online. Since it virtually has no competition and railway tickets are constantly in demand, investors were excited with its IPO, which was oversubscribed by 112 times over. Being one of the world’s busiest sites for ticketing, IRCTC’s transaction volume averages between 25-28 million a month. In FY19, IRCTC’s total revenue stood at ₹19,566 million. “Levy of convenience fee on ticket bookings and commissioning of six new Rail Neer plants is expected to aid IRCTC’s revenue CAGR at 16% over FY19-21E,” IIFL securities had said in its IPO note. However, IRCTC also comes with its own risks since it serves only one client . “IRCTC’s business and revenues are substantially dependent on <keyword id="6355455" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="indian-railways">Indian Railways</keyword>. Any adverse change in policy of the Ministry of Railways may adversely affect the business and financials,” IIFL Securities had said.

IRCTC doubles investor wealth as its stock surges 128% on listing

Revenue from online ticketing on Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (<keyword id="65866" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IRCTC">IRCTC</keyword>) exceeds the total sales of <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> India combined together. While both Flipkart and Amazon India had claimed to hit an annual gross merchandise value of a billion dollar in the last financial year, IRCTC garnered about $2.5 billion (Rs15,410 crore) through online sale of tickets. 
 
According to a media report, both Amazon India and Flipkart are in talks with IRCTC as they want to exploit its vast database of more than 21 million customers. "Tie-ups with portals like Flipkart, Amazon etc are in the process under which these portals would like to sell their merchandise through IRCTC's portal, it being one of the largest e-commerce sites in the entire Asia-Pacific region," said Sandip Dutta, public relations manager at IRCTC. 
 
However, in spite of having phenomenal web traffic, IRCTC can't boast of a valuation like Flipkart or Amazon. "Being a government company, its slow decision making, red tapism, less innovation leads to non interest by investors, which in turn leads to a lower valuation. Margins of travel are much lower than margins commanded by selling goods online too," said Rakesh Nangia, founder and managing partner of Nangia &amp; Co, a tax and transaction advisory firm. 
 IRCTC had partnered with <keyword id="889290" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Yebhi">Yebhi</keyword>.com last year. But the contract wasn’t renewed after its expiry.

On October 28, after the railway company informed stock exchanges of the government’s decision, many investors had criticised the move on social media portals. Shares of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation recovered after losing more than 25% in the early trade on announcement of government asking IRCTC 50% of revenue coming from service charts on e-ticketing, i.e., convenience fees, with the government. The move came as a big shock to investors as it meant IRCTC would have to share a chunk of its revenue with the government. In FY21, IRCTC earned ₹299 crore from this segment, which is almost 40% of its revenue from operations of ₹783 crore. At 11:11 a.m. shares of the company were trading 4% lower at 875.95 per share. Cancelled trains drag IRCTC shares down by over 3%

However, information worth lakhs of rupees is still feared to have been stolen. 
 
"We will set up a panel to probe the incident," Dutta said, clarifying that nothing is wrong with the website, which seems to be working absolutely fine. 
 
Dutta had to issue this statement after several reports came out in the media, claiming that the not only the IRCTC website was hacked, but personal data of around 1 crore customers was also stolen from its server. Even as the website is said to be working fine, there has been no denial about the theft of data, which can be used to create forged documents. 
 
IRCTC, India's largest e-commerce website, sees lakhs of transactions every day, with customers providing vital details like Pan Card numbers and bank account details while filling up online reservation forms. 
 
An IRCTC source said, "The data is a valuable asset and can be sold to corporations who may use it for targeting potential consumers."

The government is planning to sell up to 20% stake in the company. The OFS has opened for non-retail investors today. Floor price has been set at ₹1367, which is at a 16% discount to the last closing price on December 9. <div type="image" title="ITC Share price (1)" msid="79656890" hostid="261"></div> The promoter proposes to sell up to 2,40,00,000 equity shares of IRCTC, representing up to 15% stake, with an option to additionally sell 80,00,000 shares, representing 5% of the total issued and paid up equity share capital, the company said in a regulatory filing. Govt. would divest 15 per cent equity with a 5 per cent green shoe option," Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey said in a tweet. Shares of IRCTC on Wednesday closed at Rs 1,618.05 apiece on the BSE, down 1.55 per cent from its previous close. In all, the promoter Government of India will sell 3.2 crore shares, which is expected to garner Rs 4,374 crore for the exchequer starved of funds due to the COVID-19 crisis. <keyword id="9901399" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IRCTC-ofs">IRCTC OFS</keyword> will help the government inch forward in meeting the Rs 2.10 lakh crore disinvestment target. The company had raised Rs 645 crore through the IPO. The Union Cabinet had in April 2017 approved listing of five railway companies.
