"Hashtag" may have just been <a href="http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2013-01-09/features/ct-tribu-words-work-hashtag-20130109_1_new-words-committee-american-dialect-society-marriage-equality" target="_blank">crowned 2012's word of the year</a>, but it seems 2013 could be the year of "cord cutting." 
Cord cutting is a growing trend threatening the <keyword id="6355066" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cable">cable</keyword> industry's standard bundle package sales, as many are now opting for wireless broadcasting services such as <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>, Apple <keyword id="6355065" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="tv">TV</keyword>, and Hulu.
According to a <a href="http://www.theatlanticwire.com/technology/2012/08/hbo-here-are-those-cord-cutting-stats-you-asked/55292/" target="_blank">survey conducted by Convergence Consulting Group</a>, "2.65 million people have forgone their cable subscriptions for alternative methods between the years of 2008 and 2011" to opt for low-cost Internet video streaming subscription services or other free video platforms.
<a href="http://paidcontent.org/2012/05/04/nielsen-1-5m-u-s-households-cut-the-cord-in-2011/" target="_blank">Nielsen reports a similar figure</a>, finding that the number of households paying a multichannel provider last year declined by 1.5 million. In fact, Nielsen noted a 22.8 percent increase in cord-cutters over the past year.

As of 2012, the cable industry is also seeing a reduction in subscriptions.
One new product that threatens the cable industry more than ever before is <keyword id="28115" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Intel">Intel</keyword>'s new Internet Protocol <keyword id="6357922" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Television">television</keyword> (IPTV) service. 
"For the past year or so, Intel has also quietly been working on a top-secret set-top box that could not only be better than what Apple, Google, and even Microsoft offer today, but also kill the cable industry as we know it," claims <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyclay/2012/12/30/why-intels-new-iptv-service-will-do-what-google-apple-and-microsoft-cant/" target="_blank">Forbes</a>.
What's different about Intel's new platform is that consumers, for the first time, will be able to subscribe solely to individual channels or even TV shows—instead of having to buy bundled cable services with hundreds of channels from providers such as Time Warner.
Intel's new TV product allows viewers to pick and choose any channel they want a la carte and only pay for those channels.
And it seems Hollywood is on board, as Intel has negotiated licensing agreements with Tinseltown allowing customers to subscribe per-channel as well as have the ability to use "Cloud DVR" features. 
According to <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyclay/2012/12/30/why-intels-new-iptv-service-will-do-what-google-apple-and-microsoft-cant/" target="_blank">Forbes</a>:
As Intel has approached Hollywood with much more dedication (and dollars), this is likely the single reason that Intel, more than any company before it, has the potential to really bring to consumers the things we have never seen in online content before, such as live sports, release schedules that match broadcast, and first episode through current libraries for video on demand ... Intel has made it clear to Hollywood they are serious about this product and dedicated to its longevity. Intel is also prepared to invest heavily in making it a success.
While Silicon Valley measures investments in tens of millions, Hollywood often drops more than $100 million into a single movie. Intel came to the table knowing this, and so was able to negotiate the licensing agreements with Hollywood that other tech giants have never been able to.
Intel also has the technology to create a product unlike its competitors, as the company has been providing chips for set-top boxes since 2005.
But some, like Business Insider's own Henry Blodget, aren't sold just yet.
In his March article, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/intel-cable-tv-2012-3" target="_blank">"Intel's Plan To Become A Cable Company Is One Of The Dumbest Ideas Ever,"</a> Blodget writes: "Nothing Intel knows how to do helps it in any way in going into this business. No one Intel knows helps it in any way in going into this business ... Mark our words: Intel's cable business will be dead on arrival."
(Intel was scheduled to hold a press event at CES last week but the company has since <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyclay/2012/12/30/why-intels-new-iptv-service-will-do-what-google-apple-and-microsoft-cant/" target="_blank">said they will not be announcing anything related to the product</a> or holding any public demos.)
And Blodget's not alone.
One TV executive expressed to <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323635504578215692892912404.html" target="_blank">The Wall Street Journal</a> that despite their dollars, no one wants to be the first to negotiate a deal with Intel, fearing disrupting relationships with cable and satellite operators.
But the competition for cord-free eyeballs is fierce.
Netflix is increasingly looking to create its own content and is even <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/09/its-official-the-final-countdown-to-arrested-developments-netflix-premiere-has-started/" target="_blank">developing new seasons of "Arrested Development</a>," for example.
Amazon also recently <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/02/amazon-studios-expands-into-tv-series-looks-to-load-up-on-conte/" target="_blank">announced it is developing its own TV shows</a>, and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/time-warner-ceo-on-youtube-original-content-2012-11" target="_blank">YouTube is betting $100 million per year on original content</a>. 
But in the TV industry, $100 million is a small sum compared to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/time-warner-ceo-on-youtube-original-content-2012-11" target="_blank">$5 billion Jeff Bewkes says Time Warner spends on content</a> in a single year.
And Time Warner is still holding tight to one of its entities: HBO.
The cable giant's subscribers can watch HBO programming via HBO Go, but they still have to subscribe to HBO through a cable provider.
Because HBO is owned by Time Warner, they will never allow a pure HBO Go option since HBO is the reason many people still subscribe to a broader bundled cable package. 
Many cord cutters were up in arms because they want HBO content and are willing to pay, say, $10-20 for HBO Go without a cable package, but have no option to do so. 
163,673 people even signed <a href="http://takemymoneyhbo.com/" target="_blank">a Twitter petition saying they would pay for HBO Go as a separate entity</a>, but the network known for their quality original programming <a href="http://takemymoneyhbo.com/" target="_blank">refuses to change anything "for now."</a>

 Surprised? Although we may find it difficult to accept, some industry insiders insist that our living room big screen, the ubiquitous pay <keyword id="6355065" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="tv">TV</keyword>, is already dead and <keyword id="124571" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="digital-media">digital media</keyword> is gradually taking over. So we decided to delve into the matter and tracked as many as 5 key factors that could spell the demise of the popular gadget as a dominant communications medium. 
 
What’s happening in India? According to the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2011, all <keyword id="669722" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cable-TV-operators">Cable TV operators</keyword> must transmit TV signals in an encrypted format, through a <keyword id="1031670" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Digital-Addressable-System">digital addressable system</keyword> (<keyword id="6368348" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Das">DAS</keyword>). Digitisation across the country is expected to be completed by December 2014. That’s undoubtedly a huge switchover, affecting some 150 million-plus homes and empowering consumers to more number of channels and high quality viewing through Direct-to-Home (<keyword id="6411255" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="DTH">DTH</keyword>) services or digital set-top box (<keyword id="300874" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="STB">STB</keyword>). 
 
Will that put India on par with global technology practices – in line to experience the so-called re-invented televisions displayed at the CES this year? Well, at least it is the first step towards the global direction and may soon witness a mass scrapping of the age-old analogue TV sets. So why are we sceptic about our good old pay TV? Let us take a closer look. 
 
 
 
New TV hardware not worth the expense Average Indians are already gunning for the ‘flat’ experience and those in love with new tech toys could be looking beyond. After all, news from <keyword id="1997485" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="CES-2014">CES 2014</keyword> says that ‘flat’ is out and ‘curved’ is in, essentially offering viewers a left-to-right concavity.

For instance, <keyword id="91626" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="3D-TV">3D TV</keyword> has totally gone out of fashion at the CES this year and key manufacturers are now pushing their ultra high-definition 4K televisions. 
 But is there a future even in 4K? 4K is all about pixel count and extremely high-resolution screens, but we already have some good quality and cheaper HD sets in place that won’t cost a fortune. Moreover, 4K also suffers from lack of content, so much so that Sony’s latest 4K range (KD-55X9004 and KD-65X9004) comes with X-Reality Pro video encoding that upscales any video to match the 4K resolution of 3840x2160p. In case you are looking to stream some over-the-top (<keyword id="1245953" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="OTT">OTT</keyword>) video content from service providers like <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword>, you may require a 15 MBPS <keyword id="6357247" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Internet">Internet</keyword> connection to watch it on your <keyword id="2019007" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="4K-curve">4K curve</keyword>. In contrast, watching TV shows via smartphones, tablets and other gadgets cost very little and offers big perks.

Otherwise, watch any movie/TV show through a bunch of OTT apps/services such as <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword>, Netflix, Amazon, <keyword id="191565" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hulu">Hulu</keyword> and more. That’s definitely a big let-down in the age of social media. So it’s not really surprising that <keyword id="2019025" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cable-subscriptions">Cable subscriptions</keyword> in the US are poised to drop below 40 million for the first time in over a decade. India’s smart TV shipments grew 38% year-on-year in Q3 2022, with 90% of units sold being smart TVs. “The future of TV in terms of advertising looks bright as the emergence of new technologies like CTV creates even more room for customisations,” Prasanth Kumar CEO - South Asia, GroupM said. Connected TV (CTV) is connected to the internet either directly or indirectly through: smart TVs, external streaming devices such as <keyword id="163880" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="apple-tv" source="Orion">Apple TV</keyword>, Amazon Fire TV Sticks etc, internet-enabled gaming consoles and Blu-ray/DVD players. <keyword id="1632453" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="linear-tv" source="Orion">Linear TV</keyword>, on the other hand, refers to traditional television viewing where TV is accessed either free of charge or via subscription to cable, satellite, or IPTV services. Close to 80% of linear or traditional TV users are intending to switch to connected TVs in the next one year, the <keyword id="15734281" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="finecast-kantar" source="Orion">Finecast Kantar</keyword> report said. This is in line with a March 2022 <a href="https://www.livemint.com/opinion/columns/linear-tv-s-growth-story-inches-towards-a-dead-end-11663779952306.html">EY-Ficci</a> report that said subscription revenue for linear TV fell by 6.2% in 2021, with the loss of six million pay TV homes. Connected TV advertising is set to grow rapidly in India with a 47% CAGR by 2027, the report said. India plans to spend $395 million on CTV advertising by 2027, it stated. What is driving the Indian audience to connected TVs? There are three primary reasons for preference of connected TVs- flexibility in switching channels, variety in content catalogue and ease of search. The report also said that 63% of connected TV users think the ads shown to them are more personalised. There is also a perception that CTV offers uninterrupted content and less ads, the report said. “If convenience is driving audiences towards connected TV, addressability is driving advertisers to connected TV,” the report said. While Indian families prefer to watch documentaries, kids shows, daily soaps, sports and movies together, this was not the case with web series which people want to watch alone, the report found. However, duration of TV consumption was not dependent on the mode of connection as both connected and linear viewers spent about 12 hours per week watching TV. In terms of pan-India preference, West India preferred connected TV and the East opted majorly for linear TV viewing. Smart appliances and connected TVs The report said that connected TV users tend to have 1.2 times more household income than linear TV watchers and are twice more likely to own smartphones that cost almost ₹40,000. Connected TV users are known to be more brand conscious, often enjoy premium lifestyles. This included owning smart home appliances, surround sound systems, membership of health clubs and resorts with premium credit cards. As compared to Linear TV respondents, Connected TV users were more likely to go out frequently, scroll through social media, meet friends and family and even binge watch TV shows on weekends, the report revealed. The rise of connected TV is gradually phasing out the traditional/linear TV viewers. The Indian TV advertising target audience is also growing. Today, there are 20-22 million addressable TVs homes in India, which is estimated to reach 40 million by 2025. Addressable TV advertising is the ability to show different ads to different households while they are watching the same content. The future is connected: 80% of traditional TV viewers want to switch in a year says Finecast Kantar

Seoul, June 22 (IANS) South Korea said Monday that it plans to launch a 1 trillion-won ($825 million) fund and sharply cut red tape in order to help local players better compete with global media giants like Netflix and YouTube. Under the plan, the local media market will be valued at 10 trillion won by 2022, and its exports will top 13.4 trillion won, according to the ICT Strategy Council. The fund and eased regulations will help local players better respond to the fast-changing business environment, the council said. The regulator will scrap ceilings on market share for system operators (SO) and internet protocol television (IPTV) services, and it plans to introduce a notification system for broadcasting fees as an alternative to the current system of state approval only. Local video streaming service providers will also be allowed to rate content, reports Yonhap news agency. The 1 trillion-won fund will be spent to create high quality content, as well as make greater use of artificial intelligence in the creation of media materials. <ul><li>During the earnings call, <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword> co-founder and chairman <keyword id="566177" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reed-Hastings">Reed Hastings</keyword> spoke about the company’s India investment, and why the country remains a tremendous opportunity.</li><li>Hastings compared India’s growth chapter to the success the company has seen in Korea, Japan, where the country has doubled down on original content.</li><li>Even though India remains a low ARPU (average revenue per user) market, it has pushed the company for more pricing experiments.</li></ul>Streaming giant Netflix on Tuesday announced its <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/news/netflix-added-less-than-4-million-customers-in-the-first-months-of-2021-and-warns-of-a-dramatic-drop-off-in-new-customer-growth-as-the-pandemic-subsides/articleshow/82170675.cms">first quarter</a> earnings, where it said it added four million new customers, globally. During the earnings call, Netflix co-founder and chairman Reed Hastings spoke about the company’s India investment and why the country remains a tremendous opportunity. However, Hastings didn’t hold back to say that the investment in India remains speculative. “India, we're still figuring things out. And so that investment takes some guts and belief forward-looking. But the other investments you should think of, just like rich European countries, content exports really well, and we're just getting a little better every month on it,” he said. Hastings compared India’s growth chapter to the success the company has seen in Korea, Japan, where the country has doubled down on original content. “(About India) I would say we're still mostly focused on getting a content fit and getting broader content. So that's why I'd say that one is a more speculative investment than, say, Korea or Japan, which, again, 5 years ago was very speculative when we did those, okay? But we've got off – we're over the hump on that,” he said. The streaming giant’s top executives remained bullish about India and it being a ‘tremendous opportunity’. Earlier, Netflix had <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/03/03/netflix-to-release-41-original-indian-shows-and-movies-this-year/">announced</a> its plans to release 41 new original productions this year, in India alone. Theodore A. Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO, chief content officer and director said that in India, the wait is worth it. “It's just, like all great opportunities, it's a long journey, and it's a challenge. And we think it's worth it. And that's why we're investing early and trying to stay ahead of it. And I think we'll be able to see those kinds of results that we've seen in other places in the world as we continue to learn more and more and more,” he said. So, even though Indian remains a low ARPU (average revenue per user) market, it has only pushed the company for more pricing experiments. Gregory Peters, Netflix’s chief operating officer and chief product officer, said that the company is still trying to figure out the right pricing model for India. Netflix has gone from desktop only plans starting at ₹699 per month, to introducing mobile only plans in India for as low as ₹199. They have also built partnerships with the likes of Jio, Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani’s telecom and digital platform. Peters spoke about a successful strategy for them has been leveraging go-to-market partners who have existing relationships with consumers and use them to push Netflix service and then have them make it ‘easy to pay’. “The ultimate and easy to pay is it just included the sort of bundled offerings that we've been doing more and more of, and Jio is a great example of a partner we've been working with there to really bring the service to a new demographic at a very, very low price associated with low-cost mobile plans that they're offering as well as home-based IPTV plans. And those have been successful for us as well,” said Peters. That news might sound like a good thing for Netflix, but it actually could be a source of worry for investors who are concerned about Netflix's slowing subscriber growth. According to Business Insider Intelligence, the top nine US cable companies added just over 50,000 subscribers in Q1 2016, with total cable subscribers at 49.1 million. The game will immerse real-life Disney and Pixar character figurines into one giant play space across gaming platforms (Xbox, PS3, WiiU), the iPad, mobile, and online.
The kicker is that children will be able to play with characters from different films in the same area and allow them to interact with items from each other's respective movies. So, yes, you could race Lightning McQueen ("Cars") and Dash ("The Incredibles") to see who's faster. And, Mr. Incredible could wear Buzz Lightyear's jet pack.
