Sanjiv Goenka makes a billion dollar comeback to the world's biggest T20 stage

Till last year, 24-year-old <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=KESHAV+BANSAL&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Keshav Bansal</a> was busy running a mobile handset company as the Director of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=INTEX+TECHNOLOGIES&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Intex Technologies India Ltd</a>. Today, he is the youngest owner of an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IPL&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">IPL</a> team- the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=GUJARAT+LIONS&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Gujarat Lions</a>. 
 According to him, it took a mere 20 minutes to convince his father Narendra Bansal, who is the Chairman and Managing Director of <keyword id="6366627" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Intex">Intex</keyword> Technologies that he had what is needed to run an <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> franchise. 
 
Talking to Livemint about his journey of owning an IPL team, Bansal admitted that he was infact in discussions with <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> for a long-term sponsorship association for Intex as an on-ground sponsor for the IPL. 
 
“That was six months before the auctions. Coincidentally, BCCI members bounced off the idea for bidding for a team. I got back to the office, researched and made a formal presentation to my father. It took us 20 minutes to decide and my father has supported me through this,” said Bansal. 
 
Bansal, who grew up in a joint family studied at The Heritage School in Vasant Kunj before pursuing management AT IILM Institute of High Education in New Delhi. In between, he had also spent a year at the Manchester School of Business. 
 
When he joined Intex, he was put in the logistics department and had to work his way to the company’s marketing team before becoming its Director. 
By his own admission, Bansal has been actively involved in making ad films for the company right from strategy to ideation. 
 
In the past too, he has had a reputation for taking on things at a young age. For example, he held his first press conference at 20 when Farhan Akhtar was appointed as Intex’s brand ambassador. 
 
Owning an IPL team for Bansal ultimately boils down to a chapter in marketing. 
 “Intex Technologies and IPL have the same target audience—the youth. We have been majorly focusing on cricket to fulfil marketing goals. With <keyword id="1641060" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gujarat-lions">Gujarat Lions</keyword>, we have further strengthened the association and made it more meaningful..,” said Bansal in an interview to Mint. 
 
That however doesn’t imply that he does not take an interest in cricket. But, at the same time, he claims he is equally fond of other sports as well. Naturally, he was also personally involved in the selection of players for the Gujarat Lions. 
 
The team is captained by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=SURESH+RAINA&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Suresh Raina</a> who is aided my coach Brad Hodge. Others players include Ravindra Jadeja, <keyword id="55681" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Brendon-McCullum">Brendon McCullum</keyword>, James Faulkner and Dwayne Bravo, to name a few. 
 
Once his two-year association with IPL ends, Bansal already has another dream he would like converting to reality- that of taking Intex global.

24-year-old Keshav Bansal, the youngest owner of an IPL team

The new Ahmedabad-based <keyword id="6354312" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPL" source="Orion">IPL</keyword> team, owned by CVC Capital, will be called <keyword id="6354766" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gujarat" source="Orion">Gujarat</keyword> Titans, the franchise revealed on Wednesday, days ahead of the mega auction. The naming of the Ahmedabad franchise comes days after the Lucknow-based team announced its official name as Lucknow Super Giants. Both Ahmedabad and Lucknow are two new entrants to the IPL and were bought by CVC Capital Partners (Irelia Company Pte Ltd) and RPSG Group respectively, last October. "Debuting in the 15th season of the IPL, the Gujarat Titans will pay tribute to the state's rich cricketing legacy, which has seen it produce countless Indian international cricket legends over the years," the franchise said in a statement on Wednesday. "The franchise is inspired by the opportunity to represent and build on this deep cricketing heritage, as well as build on its future success on the pitch," it added. India all-rounder Hardik Pandya (Rs 15 crore) will lead the Ahmedabad team while they have also picked Rashid Khan (Rs 15 crore) and Shubman Gill (Rs 8 crore) via drafts ahead of the auction. It will be only the second IPL team for all three players, with Rashid coming over from Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gill from Kolkata Knight Riders, and Pandya from Mumbai Indians. This will also be the first time Pandya will lead an IPL franchise. Titans have also named their coaching staff comprising Ashish Nehra (head coach), Gary Kirsten (mentor and batting coach) and Vikram Solanki (director of cricket). The trio has worked together for Royal Challengers Bangalore previously. Titans' home stadium will be the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the world's largest cricket stadium. "We want this group to achieve great things for Gujarat and its many passionate fans, which is why we have chosen the name Titans," Siddharth Patel, a partner at CVC, said. "As we approach the league's mega auction, we are confident that we will be able to put together the right combination of players going into the new season. We want individuals that are not only highly skilled but who are inspired to be Titans of the game. "We look forward to starting on our journey with the passion and support of the people of Gujarat, and hope to inspire and win over new fans from all over India and the world," he added. Titans will have Rs 52 crore in their purse for the auction, scheduled to be held in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. Ahmedabad-based new IPL franchise to be called Gujarat Titans

Some of the big companies in India are keen on buying a team in the Indian Premier League (<keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword>) after the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> banned Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and <keyword id="13802" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rajasthan-Royals">Rajasthan Royals</keyword> (RR) on Tuesday from participating in the game. 

	This move provides room for the induction of two more teams in the next edition of IPL, reported ToI.
 

	The IPL is the richest of the world's Twenty20 cricket leagues.
 The expected list of names are: Gautam Adani, <keyword id="2742230" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Adani-Group-chairman">Adani group chairman</keyword>, <keyword id="52673" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="harsh-goenka">Harsh Goenka</keyword>, RPG group chairman, Sajjan Jindal, chairman JSW, <keyword id="7025" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Venugopal-Dhoot">Venugopal Dhoot</keyword>, Videocon group chairman, besides others such as Prasad Potluri of South-based PVP Ventures and the Munjals of Hero group. Confirming the development Harsh Goenka told ToI, that honour was restored to the gentleman's game with corruption getting clean bowled by the apex court’s verdict. "The league remains an interesting investment opportunity. If <keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> auctions a franchise, I will consider it only if the valuations are considerable." 

	Moreover, the valuations of the IPL teams have come down considerably due to a series of corruption. According to experts, the new teams are likely to be bought for less than $100 million.
 Venugopal Dhoot, one of the key sponsors of Mukesh Ambani-owned <keyword id="13880" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mumbai-Indians">Mumbai Indians</keyword>, is also keen on buying a team. "We will definitely look at bidding for an IPL franchise as and when BCCI calls for bid. We spend crores in branding exercise and owning an IPL team would be a great idea," he said. 

	The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might want to revive the Pune and Kochi teams. However, launching a new team for Ahmedabad may not be ruled out, according to sources. 
 

	In that case Gautam Adani may be a key contender to buy the Ahmedabad team as the billionaire businessman had once dreamt of owning an IPL team for his home state. 
 "The idea of having an Ahmedabad team would be great as it would draw lots of interest from corporates for being the home state of Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>," said an industry leader. 

	Sajjan Jindal is another top contender to own an IPL team. "Cricket is the number one sport in our country so there is an idea to acquire a team... an IPL team. But, I cannot comment which team would it be," Jindal, JSW group chairman said earlier this month.
 He did not confirm or deny if he wanted to buy <keyword id="12643" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Royal-Challengers">Royal Challengers</keyword> Bangalore (RCB), owned by liquor baron <keyword id="14678" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vijay-Mallya">Vijay Mallya</keyword>. 

	JSW Sports, a JSW Group owned firm, is the owner of Bengaluru FC, one of the I-league teams led by Indian football team's captain Sunil Chhetri.
 Potluri Vara Prasad might again try his luck this time after he failed to buy <keyword id="1336250" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Deccan-Charger">Deccan Charger</keyword> in 2012, industry sources said.

<keyword id="1641060" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gujarat-lions">Gujarat Lions</keyword> began its IPL journey on a winning note after they defeated Kings XI Punjab at the Mohali stadium in their maiden game. Aaron Finch and Dwayne Bravo roared the team into victory by five wickets. 
 New entrant Gujarat Lions, which is owned by the youngest IPL team owner, Keshav Bansal (24), has an impressive team with skipper <keyword id="14587" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suresh-Raina">Suresh Raina</keyword> leading from the front.

A lot of responsibility lies on players such as Brendon McCullum, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, and James Faulkner, there are Under-19 players, too, who have emerged as winners for their respective teams. 
 
Dwayne Bravo, who had the Purple Cap in IPL 2015, holds the record for taking the most wickets in a calendar year; he took 69 wickets in 47 T20 matches in the year 2015. It remains to see whether his charm will work for Gujarat too.

IPL 9: Know the players behind the powerful roars that newbie Gujarat Lions are packing

This <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> season is going to belong to mobile handset makers, who will hog the most airtime during the matches on official broadcaster Sony. Mobile brands like Oppo, Vivo, Lava, Micromax and LYF are not only going to advertise a lot during the T20 league matches, but are also sponsors of six out of the eight playing teams. Other than this, another brand Intex also owns a team. 
 
Oppo has signed up as the presenting sponsor this year, which means that it would take 240 seconds per match, the highest ever time slot in the IPL. Similarly, the other two presenting sponsors -Vodafone and Amazon - have taken 210 seconds per match. 
 
Like this year’s mobile brands, the last season of the IPL belonged to the ecommerce majors like Flipkart, Snapdeal, Amazon, CarDekho, Car-Trade, Paytm, Shopclues and Myntra, who brought around 23% of the total ad revenues for the broadcaster. 
 
"This year, the handset category is making up around 20% of our advertising revenues, the highest among all categories," says Rohit Gupta, president of Sony Pictures Networks. 
 
The reason why smartphone makers have overtook e-commerce companies is that the losses of some of the leading ecommerce players grew significantly over the past one year, forcing most of them to cut down on advertising costs. 
 
As per media planners, this IPL would give Sony around Rs 1,200 crore from sponsorship and advertising, as compared to just under Rs 1,000 crore in the last season of IPL.

Mobile handset makers to pay Sony around 20% of IPL ad revenue

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday announced that men's IPL teams Mumbai Indians, <keyword id="66" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="delhi" source="Orion">Delhi</keyword> Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, along with the <keyword id="6367820" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="adani-group" source="Orion">Adani Group</keyword> and Capri Global have won bids to own the five Women's Premier League (WPL) teams. The inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League is expected to be played in March this year. The home teams of the five winning franchises will be Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Ahmedabad and Lucknow respectively. The auction was held in Mumbai earlier in the afternoon. The five winners were revealed after opening the bids. While Adani Group, through Adani Sportsline Pvt. Ltd got the Ahmedabad franchise with the highest bid of INR 1289 crore, Indiawin Sports Pvt. Ltd acquired the Mumbai franchise with a bid of INR 912.99 crore. Royal Challengers Sports Pvt. Ltd, JSW GMR Cricket Pvt. Ltd and Capri Global Holdings Pvt. Ltd won the rest of the three teams with winning bids of INR 901 crore, INR 810 crore and INR 757 crore respectively. Honorary Secretary Jay <keyword id="1858" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="shah" source="Orion">Shah</keyword> had earlier said that a whopping INR 4669.99 crore came in as total bids for owning teams in the upcoming Women's Premier League (WPL), which he added has broken the record of the inaugural Men's IPL in 2008. "Today is a historic day in cricket as the bidding for teams of the inaugural #WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men's IPL in 2008! Congratulations to the winners as we garnered Rs.4669.99 Cr in total bid." Earlier, on January 16, Viacom18 Media Private Limited won the consolidated bid for media rights (i.e., Global Televisions Rights and Global Digital Rights) of the WPL for the period of 2023-2027. Viacom18 won the rights with a bid of INR 951 crore, which translates to a per-match value of INR 7.09 crore.
