Pakistani cricket players took part in the first auction of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IPL&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Premier League</a> in 2008, but the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Mumbai+attacks&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Mumbai 26/11 carnage</a> the same year changed everything. 
 
Ties between the two nuclear-armed rivals soured and a decision was taken to not allow Pakistani cricketers to play in the tournament, till such time political relations between the two neighbours improved. Now, that we know is almost an impossibility in the current scenario. 
 
A lot has happened since then, diplomatically, and India and Pakistan have played many matches in the country. Still, the non-participation clause for them in the IPL stands. 
 
IPL is regarded as a celebration of cricket, where players from different teams and countries converge in India to enthral cricket fans of a nation that eats, breathes and sleeps cricket. 
 
We are in the ninth season of the league and we sure as hell are missing out on some brilliant Pakistani cricketers and the class they could’ve added to the game, were they participating.

In particular, look at no. 2 on the top investments list — Yuzvendra Chahal. His price of Rs. 10 Lacs returned an 82.6X multiple on the investment ! But this isn’t the first time “cheap” players outperformed at the IPL. In fact, <a href="https://medium.com/r/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.espncricinfo.com%2Fiplcountdown%2Fcontent%2Fstory%2F1090031.html" class="markup--anchor markup--p-anchor" target="_blank">it happens rather often</a>. What the IPL can teach us about Investing

The tenth season of the <keyword id="6354831" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Premier-League">Indian Premier League</keyword> (<keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword>) is on its full swing. Many players missed their initial matches but sooner or later they recovered.

India's T20I captain <keyword id="6354903" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hardik-pandya" source="Orion">Hardik Pandya</keyword> on Sunday returned to his "spiritual home" <keyword id="13880" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai-indians" source="Orion">Mumbai Indians</keyword> after an all-cash deal trade-off with <keyword id="13135498" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gujarat-titans" source="Orion">Gujarat Titans</keyword> was formally completed following 72 hours of intense drama. On Sunday at 5 pm, the <keyword id="6354312" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ipl" source="Orion">IPL</keyword> retention window was closed and at that point, Gujarat Titans named their IPL-winning captain in the retention list raising a lot of eyebrows. However it was learnt that the formal paperwork wasn't yet completed and hence IPL and <keyword id="6354756" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bcci" source="Orion">BCCI</keyword> didn't give greenlight of approval for the most anticipated move of this transfer season. "Yes, Hardik's trade off got completed after 5 pm. The deal is now formalised and he is a MI player. It's been a tripartite all cash deal. MI have traded their all-rounder Cameron Green to RCB in an all cash deal. After that they had requisite funds to settle an all-cash deal with Gujarat Titans and procure Hardik's services," a senior BCCI official and IPL Governing Council member told PTI on conditions of anonymity. It must be mentioned that Green was bought by MI for a whopping Rs 17.5 crore during last auction and hence the money required to buy Hardik wasn't available till that deal was inked. Pandya was picked by Gujarat Titans before 2022 auction from the list of available players for the two new franchises -- GT and Lucknow Super Giants. His reported fee was Rs 15 crore and he led the side to back-to-back finals, winning the championship in maiden year and losing a thriller to CSK in 2023. Mumbai Indians, who have one of the most systematic team building process, have roped in Pandya with a long term plan in mind as there will be mega auction in 2025 and every franchise will try to build a new team with a young core. However with India's ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma still very much in the mix and perhaps franchise's biggest icon with five titles under his belt, it would be interesting what kind of decision the owners and top management with regards to leadership. This must be mentioned that those in the know of things had an inkling that Pandya after two years at Titans wanted to move back to the franchise from where he had made a name and played seven seasons. The lure of captaining IPL's most popular franchise with biggest fan base was also a reason apart from building his brand as a national skipper in one of the formats.

The tenth season of the Indian Premier League threw many surprises, especially in the uncapped category.

This includes the wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Kartik. He has scored 325 runs in the 14 matches with an average of 23.21. This is not what one would have expected out of the second most expensive players in the tournament 

	Kevin Pietersen

	 Team: Delhi Daredevils Cost of acquisition: Rs 9 crores The third most expensive player for the IPL season 7 is Kevin Pietersen and is the captain of Delhi Daredevils. In the 11 matches that he has played, he scored 294 runs averaging 29.40. Post the last match with <keyword id="13883" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kings-XI-Punjab">Kings XI Punjab</keyword>, Pietersen said in a media interview that he was bitterly disappointed with that day’s match. He added, “I'd like to apologize to the Delhi Daredevils fans.” Pietersen signed off saying that he hoped that the things would be much different in the forthcoming season. 

	Corey Anderson 
	 

	Team: Mumbai Indians

	Cost of acquisition: 4.5 crores

	The Kiwi batsman Corey Anderson has having a horrible spell at the ongoing IPL. However, his knock of 95 runs in just 44 deliveries helped Mumbai Indians secure a place in the playoffs. In a nail-biting match, Mumbai Indians were entrusted with the task of chasing 190 runs in under 15 overs. Though his heroic feet needs to be accoladed, but in the overall stats, Anderson has hit 265 runs in his 12 matches and has an average of 29.44.

	Team: Mumbai Indians

	Cost of acquisition: 5 crores

	Another player from the Mumbai Indians that has not been able to have an enjoyable season at the IPL is Micheal Hussey. So far in the tournament, Hussey has played 9 matches and scored 209 runs and has an average of 23.22.
 

	Chris Gayle 
	 

	Team: Royal Challenger Banglore

	 Cost of acquisition: 9.5 Crore

	The West Indies player is known to play big shots. However, in this IPL season, he too seemed a bit out of form. He has played 9 matches in the current tournament and hit a cumulative of 196 runs with an average of 21.77. His highest score in the tournament has been 46. 

	It is noteworthy that Gayle is harboring a back injury and is intending to go to Germany soon for his treatment.

In the IPL 7, it is being said that the Royal Challengers Bangalore has had an inconsistent form and the same is also true for their skipper.
 

	Yusuf Pathan 

	 <keyword id="6354467" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kolkata-Knight-Riders">Kolkata Knight Riders</keyword> Cost of Acquisition: 3.25 crore When the IPL 7 started, one of the star batsmen in KKR’s side seemed to be not in the form. However, he made it up to them in the last match against Sunrisers Hyderbad by hitting 72 off 22 balls. In the first playoff match against Kings XI Punjab in the playoffs, KKR’s score was 67 runs for the loss of three wickets, and they wanted the Pathan boy to recreate the magic of the last match. It will continue till tomorrow, and viewers can tune into Star Sports network on television and the JioCinema App. A total of 574 players were released by the respective franchise ahead of the mega auction. Of the 574 players, 366 are Indian, while 208 are overseas, including three from associate nations. The auction will see 318 Indian uncapped players and 12 uncapped overseas players in contention. There are 204 slots available, with 70 reserved for overseas players. The highest reserve price is set at Rs 2 crore, with 81 players opting for this bracket. The largest segment comprises players with a base price of Rs 30 lakh, totalling 320. The first set includes <keyword id="19904097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shreyas-iyer" source="keywords">Shreyas Iyer</keyword>, Rishabh Pant, and Arshdeep Singh, while the second features KL Rahul, <keyword id="20038368" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="yuzvendra-chahal" source="keywords">Yuzvendra Chahal</keyword>, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj. His best score was 116. In the last season, Buttler scored 359 runs in 11 matches at an average of 39.88, with two centuries. During his time with Delhi Capitals (2015-21), he earned a reputation as a fierce young leader, taking DC to finals in 2021. After joining Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2022, Iyer went one step further and won the franchise its third IPL title, its first in 10 years, this year. Throughout the season, Iyer along with mentor Gautam Gambhir, led the team's aggressive, high-scoring brand of cricket from the front. In his IPL career, Iyer has scored 2,375 runs at an average of 31.67, with a strike rate of 123.96 and 16 half-centuries. His best score is 96. In his last season for KKR, he scored 351 runs in 15 matches at an average of 39.00 and a strike rate of over 146, making two fifties. Rishabh Pant (India) The swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter is an all-format for India and a livewire on the field. Having proven himself as a man for big stages in Test cricket, Pant's T20 game is just as solid. Though he has scored 1,209 runs in 76 T20Is at an underwhelming average of 23.25, strike rate of almost 128 and just three fifties, his overall T20 numbers are way better, having made 5,022 runs in 202 matches at an average of 31.78, strike rate of over 145, with two centuries and 25 fifties. Pant has represented Delhi Capitals (DC) for his entire IPL career since 2016, scoring 3,284 runs in 110 matches at an average of 35.31, with a century and 18 fifties. He was appointed as the team's captain in 2021 and led them to playoffs in the same season. During this last season, which marked his return from competitive cricket after a serious road accident in 2022-end, Pant scored 446 runs in 13 matches at an average of 40.54 and a strike rate of 155.40, with three fifties and best score of 88*. He was the leading run-scorer for DC. Kagiso Rabada (South Africa) The South African pacer is among the best in the world, having taken 71 wickets in 65 T20Is. He is the part of the SA team which reached the T20 World Cup finals this year and took 13 wickets in nine matches. Rabada has played T20 leagues and competitions worldwide and taken 264 scalps in 211 matches. Since 2019, the year of his IPL debut, Arshdeep has represented the Punjab Kings in 65 matches, taking 76 wickets at an average of 27.00 and best figures of 5/32. The season this year was his strongest-ever showing, taking 19 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 26.58. Mitchell Starc (Australia) A multi-time world champion with Australia across all formats, Starc is considered as one of the deadliest pacers of this era, having taken 681 wickets in 281 matches. In 65 T20Is for Australia, he has taken 79 wickets at an average of 23.81. in 142 T20Is played worldwide, he has taken 193 wickets at an average of 20.59 and best figures of 4/15. After two seasons with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) from 2014-15, Starc made his IPL return this year as the most expensive player ever, brought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for Rs 24.75 crores.
