The US dollar has been on a one-way path -- upwards -- against the Pakistani rupee since the past week, and the trend continued Thursday when it finally breached the Rs 200-mark in the interbank trading, <keyword id="485056" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="samaa-tv" source="Orion">Samaa TV</keyword> reported. The value of the dollar appreciated by Rs 1.81, or 0.91 per cent and was trading at Rs 200.20 at 11 a.m. during intraday trade. The greenback closed at Rs 198.39 Wednesday, after gaining Rs 2.65 from its closing value of Rs 195.74 on Tuesday. In the open market, the US dollar already breached the Rs 200-mark two days ago. Since the new government took power April 11, the greenback has appreciated by Rs 18.09 in the interbank market. In the open market, the foreign currency rose by Rs 15.50 during the same period, Samaa TV reported. Experts have said the economic and political uncertainty was fuelling the dollar's rise and hurting the rupee's value. The market was looking towards ongoing talks between the <keyword id="6366068" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="international-monetary-fund" source="Orion">International Monetary Fund</keyword> (<keyword id="6355408" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="imf" source="Orion">IMF</keyword>) and <keyword id="3001" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pakistan" source="Orion">Pakistan</keyword> in <keyword id="6355203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="qatar" source="Orion">Qatar</keyword>. During the first rounds of talks that concluded Wednesday, Pakistan assured the Fund that it is ready to take tough decisions like revoking the subsidy on fuel and controlling the rising current account deficit. The talks were being held to resume the $6 billion IMF program for Pakistan with a possibility of extending it by $2 billion. Economic tension on all-time high as Pakistani rupee breaches 200-mark  in interbank trading

India’s Foreign exchange reserves grew by $ 625.5 million and touched $ 360.296 billion in the week to December 30. 
 The <keyword id="6354335" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (RBI) said this was because the foreign currency assets increased. 
 However, in the previous week, the <keyword id="6358355" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="forex">forex</keyword> reserves had declined by $ 935.2 million to $ 359.671 billion. 
 
The reserves had touched a life-time high of $ 371.99 billion in the week to September 30, 2016. 
 
Foreign currency assets (FCAs), a major component of the overall reserves, increased by $ 612.4 million to $ 336.582 billion in the reporting week. 
 
FCAs, expressed in US dollar terms, include the effects of appreciation/depreciation of non-US currencies, such as the euro, pound and the yen held in the reserves. 
 <keyword id="18712" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gold">Gold</keyword> reserves remained steady at $ 19.982 billion in the reporting week, the RBI said. 
 The special drawing rights with the <keyword id="6366068" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="INTERNATIONAL-MONETARY-FUND">International Monetary Fund</keyword> rose by $ 4.9 million to $ 1.432 billion, while India's reserve position with the Fund, too, increased by $ 8.2 million to $ 2.299 billion, RBI said.

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6366068" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-monetary-fund">International Monetary Fund</keyword> announced yesterday that it had reached an agreement with the government of <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> for a three-year loan programme worth $6 billion. </li><li>Discussions have been going on for a while. In October 2018, the fund’s managing director, Christine Lagarde, confirmed that an <keyword id="6355408" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="imf">IMF</keyword> team would be sent to Pakistan to discuss the terms of the <keyword id="6374681" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bailout">bailout</keyword>. </li><li>The last time Pakistan secured a loan package from the IMF was in 2013, when it received $6.7 billion. </li><li>The funding amount was expected to be higher this time. However, thanks to billions of dollars worth of loans from China, Saudi Arabia and the UAE in the last few months, Pakistan has been able to plug its external financing shortfall and refinance loans.</li></ul>The International Monetary Fund <a href="https://www.imf.org/en/News/Articles/2019/05/12/pr19157-IMF-Reaches-Staff-Level-Agreement-on-Economic-Policies-with-Pakistan-for-a-Three-Year-EFF">announced</a> yesterday that it had reached an agreement with the government of Pakistan for a three-year loan programme worth $6 billion. Khan inherited an economy weighed down by high inflation, crippling debt levels and dwindling foreign reserves. The bailout will likely require the imposition of hard austerity measures such as the welfare spending cuts, reductions in fuel subsidies, another currency devaluation and higher taxes. The <keyword id="6366068" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="INTERNATIONAL-MONETARY-FUND">International Monetary Fund</keyword> (<keyword id="6355408" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IMF">IMF</keyword>) has said that India's economy has recovered from a slump. On account of better exports and investment prospects under the Narendra Modi-led government, IMF has increased India’s FY2014-15 growth forecast to 5.6%. This forecast is 0.2 percentage point higher from the projection made in April this year. 
 
"In India, growth is expected to increase in the rest of 2014 and 2015 as exports and investments continue to pick up and more than offset the effect of an unfavourable monsoon on agriculture," the IMF said. 
 In its <keyword id="188983" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="World-Economic-Outlook">World Economic Outlook</keyword> update, the IMF also said that India’s economy would grow at 6.4% the next year. "India has recovered from its relative slump, and, thanks in part to policy and a renewal of (economic) confidence, growth is expected to exceed five percent again," said IMF chief economist Olivier Blanchard. 
 
The report comes as thumbs up to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had promised to revive India’s economy that grew just 4.7% last year. Modi has been trying to minimise red tape, attract foreign investment and bring in global firms to manufacture in India for his ‘make in India’ initiative.

Indian Economy To Grow At 5.6% This Year

She said her message to the world is to "be pragmatic and collaborate". Asked what will take for the IMF to upgrade its global growth forecast, she said, "Last year, we downgraded the growth projections three times and not downgrading further itself is good news at the moment." Also, the labour market needs to be looked at seriously, as for anyone, having a cost of living crisis and a job is much better than having no cost of living crisis and no job, she said. "2022 was a weird year. There was no growth engine. Fragmentation can cost 7% of the global GDP, will face risk if we don't unite now: IMF chief

The <keyword id="6356311" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="world-health-organisation" source="Orion">World Health Organisation</keyword> has expressed fears about an impending second disaster of water-borne diseases in <keyword id="3001" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pakistan" source="Orion">Pakistan</keyword> in the wake of devastating floods that has wreaked havoc in several parts of the country. In a statement issued by WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the global health watchdog said water supply was disrupted in flood-hit areas of Pakistan, forcing people to drink unsafe water which could cause cholera and other diseases. The WHO has cautioned people across flood-hit areas of Pakistan, precisely the worst affected <keyword id="12961" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sindh" source="Orion">Sindh</keyword> province to be extra careful. Tedros on Saturday highlighted that stagnant water serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes and spreads vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue and urged donors to continue to respond generously to save lives and prevent more suffering . Separately, the WHO Director general tweeted that he was deeply concerned about the potential for a 2nd disaster in Pakistan, spreading disease and threatening lives following the flooding and asked for quick support to tackle the issue. If we act quickly to protect the health system and deliver essential services, we can reduce the impact of this impending health crisis, he tweeted. Situation in Pakistan continues to be grim as the devastating floods have caused havoc in the country, precisely Balochistan and Sindh provinces. At least 1,545 people have been killed due to the floods across Pakistan and an estimated 16 million children impacted. The WHO has immediately released USD 10 million from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies which enabled the global health body to deliver essential medicines and other supplies to the country. In a related development, the <keyword id="6366068" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="international-monetary-fund" source="Orion">International Monetary Fund</keyword> (<keyword id="6355408" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="imf" source="Orion">IMF</keyword>) on Sunday announced to support flood relief and reconstruction efforts in Pakistan under its current bailout package for the country. The Fund last month restored a stalled economic assistance package and also provided USD 1.1 billion to the country. The IMF's resident representative in the country, Esther Perez Ruiz, said in a statement that the IMF was deeply saddened by the devastating impact of the recent floods in Pakistan and extended its sympathies to the millions of flood victims. We will work with others in the international community to support, under the current programme, the authorities' relief and reconstruction efforts, and especially their ongoing endeavour to assist those affected by the floods while ensuring sustainable policies and macroeconomic stability, the statement said. However, it is not clear how IMF would provide support under the existing Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement, which was signed in July 2019 to provide USD 6 billion to Pakistan during a 39-month period. But the IMF board had approved an extension of the program until end-June 2023 and also enhanced it to about USD 6.5 billion. The Sindh health department, meanwhile, said a total of 2.5 million patients had been treated at different medical camps across the province from July 1 to date, the Dawn newspaper reported. As many as 594,241 patients were treated for skin-related diseases, followed by diarrhea (534,800), malaria (10,702), dengue (1,401), and other diseases (120,745,1), stated a report by the Sindh Directorate General Health Services. The report also showed that 90,398 patients were treated during the last 24 hours, of which 17,919 had diarrhea, 19,746 had skin-related diseases, 695 had malaria and 388 had dengue. Around 92,797 people were treated in the province on September 15, the paper reported. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the health department said that its officials are already struggling to stem the spread of dengue hemorrhagic fever in flood-hit districts of the province, The Express Tribune newspaper reported. Pak floods: WHO concerned about water-borne diseases

<keyword id="22195" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Inflation" source="Orion">Inflation</keyword> is likely to have reached its peak in 2022 but there is no end in sight for the <keyword id="533011" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cost-of-living" source="Orion">cost of living</keyword> crisis, experts said on Tuesday. Speaking at a panel discussion during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2023, they said those on low income and in the developing world will be grappling with high prices for years to come. <keyword id="154034" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="gita-gopinath" source="Orion">Gita Gopinath</keyword>, Deputy Managing Director of the <keyword id="6366068" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="international-monetary-fund" source="Orion">International Monetary Fund</keyword>, said, "we do believe that, in terms of headline inflation for the global economy, we think it peaked in 2022." Participants agreed that inflation is inextricably linked to the cost of living crisis and tackling inflation is key to easing the cost crunch in the long run. However, <keyword id="60820" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gopinath" source="Orion">Gopinath</keyword> warned, "even if inflation comes down, prices are high because we don't have deflation, we have lower levels of inflation. The prices have gone up. How much of an impact that has had on households and on consumption varies across countries." German Finance Minister <keyword id="1084060" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="christian-lindner" source="Orion">Christian Lindner</keyword> highlighted his country's 200 billion euro "economic shield" mobilised to protect consumers from the cost of living crisis but said that he expects the country might not need the full amount. "The price levels are lower than we expected. We have fewer hardship cases, and so my expectation is that we won't need the whole protective shield of two hundred billion, which is good news," he said. According to him, on top of protecting the society's most vulnerable, the sections in the middle also need shielding from the cost of living crisis. "From the German, European, perspective, we are doing a lot for the most vulnerable, paying welfare subsidies. But we have to ask: what can we do to stabilise the qualified people who are working hard, playing by the rules?". "A renaissance of competitiveness, so that our companies are able to pay their wages... we have to reform the electricity market, we have to reduce the burdens, for example, in taxation, we have to improve the framework conditions for our SMEs (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) in Germany and all of these supply-side measures," the minister said. The panel also agreed that the knee-jerk reaction of the "re-shoring" industry in response to the supply chain shock of the COVID pandemic must be averted if inflation and the cost of living crisis are to be tackled effectively. Giving the perspective from business, Unilever CEO Alan Jope said the "fragmentation of supply chains is frankly another inflationary pressure in this economy" and warned more generally of the dangers of inequality. "The cost-of-living crisis disproportionately impacts those at the bottom of the pyramid. There is so much talk about tightening rates, and about stimulus spending, I think the only way to break the long-term trend of rising inequality is productivity," he added. He explained that Unilever has increased the wages it pays to its own workers, imploring others to do the same. Laura D'Andrea Tyson, Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, also highlighted the fundamental issue of wages. "I almost want to say, without calling it a cost of living crisis, let's call it what existed before, and that is a living wage crisis for many people." She also suggested tackling long-standing issues around planning and approvals for housing -- in order to build more stock and bring down prices -- and addressing the climate crisis and utilising technology would aid the global response to inflation. In closing, IMF's Gopinath cautioned that any meaningful moves to bring down inflation will likely mean rising unemployment. "We are at record low unemployment rates in the US and the euro area. Everything we know about our monetary policy when you tighten interest rates is for the unemployment rate to go up." "That is how you bring down inflation," she added.
