The <keyword id="9387733" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="first-unmanned-test-flight">first unmanned test flight</keyword> of Indian rocket <keyword id="502946" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Geosynchronous-Satellite-Launch-Vehicle">Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle</keyword> (GSLV), as part of the country's human space mission Gaganyaan, will not happen this year, said officials. <keyword id="4491776" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="The-Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">The Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) had planned the first of the two test flights later this year. "The first flight of the rocket as part of <keyword id="6827364" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gaganyaan-mission">Gaganyaan mission</keyword> will not happen this year (2020)," a senior ISRO official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told IANS. While the actual reason for the delay is not known, perhaps the Covid-19 lockdown had its impact on the first test flight. In his address at the 70th Annual General Meeting and National Conference on "Recent Developments in Aerospace and Defence Technology" organised by Aeronautical Society of India in February, ISRO chief K. Sivan had said that the "design and engineering of the launch vehicle and orbital module system for India's human space flight has been completed. A series of tests have to be competed to validate the design and engineering of the systems in 2020". As per the original plans, during the first test flight ISRO would send its humanoid Vyommitra. The human space flight demonstration is planned before India's 75th Independence Day in 2022 and four Indians are undergoing astronaut training in Russia. Meanwhile, suspense continues on the revised date of launch of India's first Geo Imaging Satellite-1 (GISAT-1). On March 4, a day before the scheduled launch GISAT-1 onboard the GSLV-F10 rocket and hours before the start of the launch countdown, ISRO announced postponement of the mission owing to some technical glitch. The ISRO did not share any detail about the technical glitch and its rectification since then. Gaganyaan's first unmanned test flight won't be happening this year

<ul><li>The Indian government has approved ₹10 billion in funding for programmes at the <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>). </li><li>The resources will be distributed between the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (<keyword id="6395832" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="PSLV">PSLV</keyword>) and the <keyword id="502946" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Geosynchronous-Satellite-Launch-Vehicle">Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle</keyword> Mark-III (<keyword id="138322" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GSLV">GSLV</keyword> Mk-III) projects. </li><li>Though ISRO is a research and development agency, their commercial launches help optimise costs.</li></ul>Despite recent setbacks, the central government has <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/in-big-boost-to-isro-centre-approves-rs-10-000-crore-plan-for-future-missions-1863715">green-lit</a> a budget of over ₹10 billion ($149 million) for projects at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The funds are meant to provide a boost to the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark-III (GSLV Mk-III) programmes. It’s not that ISRO’s reputation is coming into question but the launch failure of the GSAT-11 and its recall along with the GSAT-6A going incommunicado has cast a shadow on matters nonetheless. Analysts have <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/spate-of-setbacks-leaves-space-agency-isro-on-edge/story-PZZD1X19GdbVdiclNk76YP.html">surmised</a> that since ISRO operates on a ‘shoestring’ budget, direct monetary losses is where failures will have the most impact. Hedging against risk One has to understand that agency launches aren’t the same as commercial launches. Normally, the objective behind a commercial launch is to place the satellite in orbit, and then they’re done. On the other hand, when an agency launches a satellite not only do have to ensure the launch is a success but they also have to put measures in place to manage the pre-launch and post-launch operations. So, monetary losses occur across the board whenever there’s a failed launch because delays and re-testing are resource intensive. Considering that none of the satellites launched from India by the agency are <a href="http://www.rediff.com/money/2006/jul/14mspec.htm">insured</a>, it’s all the more reason to double check everything before sending the satellite into space. Because, once it’s lost, it’s a sunk cost for the agency. In order to hedge against that risk, it makes sense that ISRO is providing a boost to its launch vehicles. Operating through its commercial partner, Antrix, India is a <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/science/with-100-successful-satellite-launches-isro-in-new-orbit/article10029737.ece">dominant</a> player in the market that’s currently growing exponentially. Thus, it’s possible for more launch vehicles to increase the number of commercial launches that India can cater to. That being said, competition has been on the rise with the entry of new firms like SpaceX and Blue Origin. Their reusable technology <a href="https://futurism.com/elon-musk-with-new-spacex-tech-rocket-costs-will-drop-by-a-factor-of-100/">drastically</a> reduces the cost of launching rockets. There have been <a href="https://www.geospatialworld.net/blogs/isros-resuable-rocket-in-pipeline-but-may-take-some-time/">reports</a> of ISRO’s own reusable rocket being developed, but that may take some time. Nonetheless, ISRO’s Chairman K Sivan has <a href="http://www.defencenews.in/article/Spate-of-setbacks-leaves-space-agency-ISRO-on-edge-558627">emphasised</a> that the agency, at the end of the day, is a research and development (R&amp;D) platform. He explained that commercial launches only serve the purpose of optimising the cost of access to space and keeping up with industry standards. PSLV, GSLV Mk-III Programs From the budget of ₹10 billion, ₹6 billion ($89 million) is allocated for 30 PSLV operational flights as a part of the PSLV Continuation Programme, which is currently in Phase 6. Not only does this include the purchase of 30 PSLV vehicles, but also covers the costs associated with the launch campaign, facility augmentation and programme management. These flights will serve the purpose of meeting the required amount of satellites needed for Earth Observation, navigation and space species. And, the government claims that all the flights will be completed between 2019 to 2024. At the same time, funding for the GSLV Mk-III Continuation Programme amounts to approximately ₹4 billion ($59 million) which will be directed towards the Phase 1. Inclusive of 10 flights, unlocking this weight category will enable India’s self-reliance for future launches of communication satellites in the four-tonne class. The PSLV, on the other hand, has already <a href="https://www.isro.gov.in/launchers/pslv">launched</a> 48 Indian satellites and 209 international payloads. As most of the country slept soundly in their beds, Satish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC) in Sriharikota rumbled as a 300-tonne rocket blasted into the skies. As a new dawn folded out over India, a new dawn shone over its technological prowess as well. And since the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has come a long way building on the path paved by Chandrayaan 1. Here’s how Chandrayaan 1 set the tone for India’s space programme for the coming years:

Maker of the <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-04-11/tatas-nano-the-worlds-cheapest-car-is-sputtering">world's cheapest car</a> ($2600), <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/10/05/us-india-tablet-idUSTRE7940YV20111005">world's cheapest tablet</a> ($60) and even the <a href="http://phys.org/news/2011-07-india-tata-group-flat-pack-house.html">world's cheapest house</a> ($700), India is now launching the <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/slideshows/science-technology/why-isros-mars-mission-is-the-cheapest/isros-mars-mission-the-cheapest/slideshow/24982329.cmshttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/slideshows/science-technology/why-isros-mars-mission-is-the-cheapest/isros-mars-mission-the-cheapest/slideshow/24982329.cms">world's cheapest mission to Mars</a>, which takes off this week.
The mission, launched by Indian space agency ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) will cost the Indian government just $80 million, which compares to NASA's $2.5 billion expenditure on the US' <keyword id="47638" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mars">Mars</keyword> Curiosity project. 
The satellite is called Mangalyaan (Mars Vehicle), and will not touch down on the planet. It has been only been designed for orbit. 21 of the 51 global missions to Mars gave failed, including the one launched by China. 
But how has India managed to keep its costs so low? The answer, <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/slideshows/science-technology/why-isros-mars-mission-is-the-cheapest/save-time-money/slideshow/24982315.cms">according to the Economic Times, </a> is "frugal engineering," which has a few basic principles: to adapt existing technology as far as possible, minimize the number of physical models and optimize testing.
Unlike its European and US counterparts, ISRO has a much smaller budget and cannot afford to experiment and build iteratively. While NASA and the European Space Agency usually make three models of the spacecraft, ISRO modeled everything on software and physically built only the final model. 
This frugal approach does increase risks, which are evident from India's previous <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1341521/Boom-Indian-space-scientists-watch-horror-rocket-explodes-minutes-off.html">failed</a> <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-23751269">space missions</a>. Also, instead of flying directly, the 350-tonne rocket will orbit earth for <a href="http://phys.org/news/2013-11-india-mars-prestige-space-mission.html">nearly a month</a>, building up the necessary velocity to break free from the earth's gravitational pull. 
India's space mission has been criticized as being a waste of resources in a country where a huge proportion of the population still lives in poverty. However, defendants of the program have stated that the space program goes hand-in-hand with India's development goals. <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-switch/wp/2013/10/29/india-is-going-to-mars-but-dont-call-it-a-space-race/">The Washington Post reports</a> Dean Cheng a scholar at the Heritage Foundation saying, "The country realized early on that satellites would enable health officials to practice medicine remotely, reaching inaccessible parts of the country. The same was true for remote education. ISRO's major focus, in other words, has been to use space research as a way to overcome the country's (still) steep economic obstacles."
The chairman of ISRO, K. Radhakrishnan, has defended the program saying that India's budget for space exploration is only <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/op-ed/mars-is-part-of-indias-space-vision/article5254175.ece">0.34% of its annual budget</a>, of which 7% has been allocated to planetary exploration. He also believes that the mission will also have positive implications for the rest of the economy, and will help with cyclone forecasting.

India Is Pioneering The Low-Cost Mission To Mars

 To mark the occasion, ISRO shared some pictures from the <keyword id="1927478" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mars-Colour-Camera">Mars Colour Camera</keyword> (MCC) on board the Mars Orbiter Spacecraft (MOS). In order to fulfil its mission of collecting data to study the Martian atmosphere and observe the red planet's physical features, the MOS also carries a thermal infrared imaging spectrometer, methane sensor for Mars, Mars exospheric neutral composition analyser and a Lyman Alpha photometer. Mars Orbiter Mission completes 4 years: In pictures

New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on a visit to ISRO's Vikram Sarabhai Space Station on Tuesday, announced the names of four astronauts who have been chosen for <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s historic <keyword id="19945102" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gaganyaan" source="keywords">Gaganyaan</keyword> mission. The selected astronauts are currently going through intense training for country's first human space flight mission, slated for 2025. The four astronauts, selected for the Gaganyaan mission are Group Captain <keyword id="20747034" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prasanth-balakrishnan-nair" source="keywords">Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair</keyword>, Group Captain Ajit Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap and Wing Commander <keyword id="20747033" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shubhanshu-shukla" source="keywords">Shubhanshu Shukla</keyword>. While announcing names of the four astronauts, PM Modi expressed happiness and said that they will bring new glory to nation's space exploration programs. Notably, Gaganyaan would be India's first human space mission. All-out preparations are underway at ISRO for the project. Gagayaan would add another feat to India's successful space exploration programs. In previous display of space prowess, India became the only nation last year to make successful landing of Chandrayaan on the South Pole of the <keyword id="19899207" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="moon" source="keywords">Moon</keyword>. By 2035, ISRO plans to set up own 'Bharatiya Antariksha Station' and has also prepared a timeline to send first Indian to the Moon by 2040.

Meet the four astronauts who will steer India's Gaganyaan mission

The programme will take place between October 10 and 23, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Minister of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) <a href="https://www.aninews.in/news/national/general-news/prime-minister-innovative-learning-program-dhruv-to-be-held-from-oct-10-hrd-minister20191009162403/">told</a> ANI. It will commence at Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bangalore. The programme — which will comprise of 60 students, 30 each from science and arts. It will discuss global community challenges such as agricultural problems, glacial meltdown and water conservation. It will include students across fields — from dance and singing to physics and mathematics. “Talented students from the arts and science stream have been selected from around the country for the programme. It would start on October 10 in Bangalore and conclude on October 23 at IIT Delhi,” Nishank said. The programme will be conducted in the presence of Kailasavadivoo Sivan, Chairman of Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO), PM’s scientific advisor Professor K Vijayraghavan, and Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma. “This is an ambitious initiative of the Modi government. The minister said that India is constantly making new achievements in the field of science and technology. Science is touching new heights under the leadership of Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword>, which is why India's first self-sufficient Gaganyaan will enter space in 2024. Giving information about the achievements being made by the government in the field of science and technology, Jitendra Singh said "The idea of taking forward the 'Gaganyaan' program was in 2022 itself but due to Covid-19 it was delayed. "This will be a historic initiative in itself because our space journey started very late compared to America and Russia but today the same country is doing our research with our knowledge and taking lessons and moving forward," the minister said. Jitendra Singh said, "The way PM Modi has given respect to science in the last 8 years, this has motivated the Indian scientists and has given a respectable place to them. Rules have been simplified, for example, space has been opened for private public participation, today the result is that private rockets are being launched from there and as soon as this year ends, you will get a wonderful kind of enthusiasm across the country." "While we will be fully prepared to launch "Gaganyaan" which will be the first human flight which will work to take an Astronaut of Indian origin to space of Indian origin, it will be the first mission of this type and hence also a pride for us. It will be a matter of confidence that this work of increasing our self-esteem will work because even though our space journey started late in comparison to America or Russia, today we are in a position where our research findings are similar to those of America and Russia. Countries work to advance their research by making it available," he added.

India ready to launch its first Atmanirbhar human space flight Gaganyaan by 2024

The fact that the telescope is robotic entails that it can, in most situations, operate without any human intervention. And since it’s at the <keyword id="6640497" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Astronomical-Observatory">Indian Astronomical Observatory</keyword> (IAO) at Hanle in <keyword id="26604" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ladakh">Ladakh</keyword>, the telescope also has the badge of being housed in the one of the world’s highest astronomical observatories at 4,500 meters. People associated with the project explained that the telescope will provide data on many astronomical events of the <keyword id="6471260" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="universe">universe</keyword> are dynamic and transient in nature. This includes events related to gravitational waves, supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. But, essentially, the telescope has the potential to capture any event that has an electromagnetic signature radiation as one of its results. The telescope is also going to boost India’s capabilities for <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/science/india-gets-robotic-telescope-to-keep-an-eye-on-dynamic-cosmos/article22692197.ece">tracking asteroids</a>. Sure, asteroids aren’t transient events but once they’re close to the Earth, there’s a very small window in which they can be observed. The apparatus, being capable of capturing dynamic events, would be able to make the relevant observations in the little time available. The bigger picture A part of the Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen (GROWTH) program, the telescope is a multinational collaboration with the US, the UK, Japan, Germany, Taiwan and Israel. The telescope is only one piece of the puzzle, the larger objective of the project is the study of time-domain astronomy. The collaboration plays a <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/tech/science/indias-first-robotic-telescope-located-in-ladakh-has-begun-observing-the-skies-4554011.html">strategic role</a> in allowing a continuous and interrupted record of the skies since the partner telescopes work in sync with India’s own ₹35 million ($513,535) telescope. And, the telescope itself is programmed in such a way that it can communicate with other ground and space surveys that are also on the hunt for transient events in outer space.
