<ul><li>India's tattoo industry is burgeoning, estimated to generate around ₹20,000 crore every year.</li><li>But there are no regulations or laws in place to monitor hygiene and best practices.</li><li>The lax standards increase the risk of contamination, not only for customers but for unaware artists as well.</li></ul>Right from beachside stalls at Goa to professional studios at malls, the Indian tattoo industry is bright and booming. It is estimated to generate an annual revenue of ₹20,000 crore. Yet, this heavily fragmented business also lacks something else — regulation and safety. "There's no regulation in India and nobody even bothers — because regulation would be mean taxes. Most tattoo artists aren't paying GST aside from the select few that have professional studios set up," <keyword id="322526" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vikas-Malani">Vikas Malani</keyword>, the founder and co-owner of <keyword id="8023820" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="BODY-CANVAS-TATTOOS">Body Canvas Tattoos</keyword>, told Business Insider India. Malani has been in the business for nearly two decades with multiple tattoo studios in Mumbai, Delhi and London. He also worked with with celebrities like cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Bollywood actors Anushka Sharma and John Abraham. He explains that until regulations are in place, no one is obligated to follow any hygiene standards or even use the proper tools. "Tattooing isn't just an art, it's a science," he explains, "If you compromise and don't follow hygiene standards, your customer could end up losing his or her life." Flouting standards for cheaper inks Tattooing is not so far from science, medical science primarily. Every time a tattoo needle makes contact with a person, it's also coming in contact with their skin, their blood and the plasma. And, as it penetrates the skin, the ink drops — or pigments — are released into the bloodstream. This is where regulation should come in. Ideally, the ink used for tattooing should be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or a similar such authority. This is to ensure that there are no metal particles in it — like mercury, nickel or lead. These metals can poison the human body if they enter the bloodstream. But, that isn't always the case. The FDA recently banned six brands from manufacturing body ink but, in India, they are still in circulation. "As many as 80% of the tattoo artists in India are still using these brands because they're cheap — because suppliers are making maximum profits off of these brands," shared Malani. Keeping it not-so-clean The hygiene of the tattoo studio is yet another significant factor. A professional environment to clean surroundings can have a huge impact on the tattoo quality and the incidence of infection. Malani believes that surgical precision needs to be maintained by tattoo parlours. Anything that comes in contact with a customer during the process has to be disposed off. But, in reality not everything goes into the dustbin. They need to be disposed off in a biohazard box, which in turn, gets picked up by a hospital every month. Metal parts used to make the tattoo have to be sterilized. Artists make 90% of the mistakes "As many as 90% of the errors happen by the tattoo artists. The rest 10% where clients are responsible, is only when they don't follow after care," said Malani. An artist should be using gloves when working on a tattoo. Not just normal examination gloves but sterile gloves meant for surgical use. More importantly, artists should also sterilize the area that is going to be tattooed — similar to how nurses sterilize an injection site before delivering a shot. Otherwise, all the germs from travelling or from having pets at home will go right inside a person's bloodstream as the needle penetrates the skin — multiple times. Lastly, artists shouldn't be tinkering around with their phones as they make a tattoo — even if they are wearing gloves. One, all the germs from the phone get transferred onto the gloves which will then touch the tattooed area. Two, the blood and other bodily fluids from the client will get onto the phone. That means once the gloves are off, the germs on the phone will end up back on the hands. It's possible that those hands might touch a third person and start a wider contamination. Technology makes it personal Just as the sophistication of tattoo designs has evolved over time, so has the technology. Earlier artists used to employ magnetic coil machines, which were so simple that anyone can rig them at home. Now, they have rotary machines at their disposal from companies like the Germany-based Cheyenne, which has their own brain to keep the machine from damaging the skin. "The mindset of the people will not change. But, what can change is the use of technology. The I upgrade the technology, the better and more comfortable they feel," states Malani. He claims that the new machines have advanced to such an extent that the pain of getting a tattoo is gone and the risk of infection is negated. Each machine is designed to a particular type of skin — soft, hard, dry, medium texture, oil and sensitive. Accordingly, companies developed four to five different variants. Malani explains that the darker the skin, thicker it gets. The thicker the skin, the strokes of the tattoo needle need to be bigger and dense in order to leave ink behind. White skin , for instance, is thin so it only requires a needle that goes 2.5 millimeters deep. Brown skin, on the other hard, is thicker so it may require a needle that goes 3.5 millimeters to 4 millimeters deep. The innovation of these machines is giving a boost to the tattoo industry worldwide, according to Malani.

Soundwave tattoos And a new feather to the cap is the ‘soundwave tattoos’ — which refers to the tattoos that have audio. This latest invention in the world of tattooing was first created by a Los Angeles-based tattoo artist in 2017 and was later adopted by the artists in India. Lokesh Verma, founder of Delhi-based studio <keyword id="8657757" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="devilz-tattooz">Devilz Tattooz</keyword> , which was also the first in India to start the concept of talking tattoos told Business Insider how soundwave tattoos are emerging as a new inking trend. “You can have the messages or sound of your special one and hear it anytime you want. This is more like a coded message which no one else can know; but whenever you feel like hearing their sound you can just scan the tattoo and playback." Given the complexity of the design, tattooing costs between ₹4,000 and ₹10,000 per hour. However, in case of the soundwave tattoos, the cost can go as high as ₹15,000, depending on the length of the audio. The potential market for this technology are enthusiasts who get new tattoos done every few months and those who want something beyond conventional tattoos. Verma, who has clients like Remo D’souza, Taapsee Pannu and Swara Bhaskar, said that there have been instances where people who are not really into tattooing got their soundwave as their first tattoo. “This is because instead of a design they were more interested in the idea behind the technology which allows them to hear the voice of a loved one anytime they want by simply scanning the tattoo with their phone,” he told. “To put it in simple words, it works pretty much the same as your phone scanning a QR code. After scanning the unique soundwave, it redirects to the server where the sound is stored and plays it with the help of an active internet connection,” he explained. Growing demand As India embraces this artform, the demand for training has also witnessed a surge in recent years. The professional studios that extend training and certification in the field charge nearly ₹60,000 to ₹125,000. Devilz Tattooz also offers a 90-day certification course that helps students build artistic skills along with hands-on experience with the tattoo machine. The course costs nearly ₹120,000. While a basic tattooing course would cost nearly ₹65,000. Other inventions in the tattooing industry include black and gray portraits, glowing tattoos, permanent cosmetic procedures like SMP (Scalp MicroPigmentation), microblading and laser tattoo removals among others. Lokhandwala said that the brand is trying to make its overall communication a little more inclusive, one social media post and campaign at a time. Telling us why the brand decided not to collaborate with a celebrity, she said, “It's an inclusive campaign that celebrates every Indian woman. There's a mother who is enjoying playful moments with her kids, you see a woman who's indulging in her love for dancing. There's an older woman who's stepping out of her comfort zone to try something different. You see young girls who are basically breaking norms, breaking barriers and celebrating in their own style. The campaign encapsulates women from different life stages, and showcases how they are indulging in their dream. So, we wanted the campaign to be relatable to everybody who watches it. And to ensure that it is relatable, we felt that celebrities may not be the right partnership to go for this campaign. We just wanted it to showcase real women.” The stigma surrounding discussion around intimate wear is steadily decreasing. There has been a substantial increase in demand for sportswear, bralettes, activewear and daily intimatewear as Indian women have seen their per capita spend double over the last 7 years. With this, the market potential has also increased. Simultaneously, marketing in the intimate category has also evolved, today it is more about inclusivity, diversity, comfort than style to cater to a varied population in India. Telling us how Zivame’s consumers have changed after the pandemic, Lokhandwala said, “This current era is actually shaped by the pandemic and consumer behavior is constantly evolving. Now what is required of marketers is to predict not just what consumers will think and do in today's time but also what they will do in the next normal, and then modify and build strategies to ensure that we stay relevant. But over the past two years, a seemingly new use for henna has blown up on TikTok, where people use it to draw semipermanent freckles on their faces. The trend follows other popular fads like<a href="https://www.insider.com/mihenna-is-an-easy-do-it-yourself-henna-tattoo-kit-2020-11"> henna tattoos</a> and<a href="https://metro.co.uk/2015/10/24/white-henna-style-tattoos-are-the-latest-trend-in-temporary-body-art-5459942/"> white henna</a>. On TikTok, the #hennafreckles hashtag has 159 million views and the #henna hashtag has 6.6 billion views, with many of the top-liked videos showing creators, most of whom are white, using henna to paint freckles on their faces. Some South Asian creators on the app have spoken out against the trend, calling it an act of <keyword id="12175317" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cultural-appropriation" source="Orion">cultural appropriation</keyword>. While various Middle Eastern, Asian, and African cultures use henna, creators belonging to these cultures argue the trend pushes white, Eurocentric <keyword id="11915641" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="beauty" source="Orion">beauty</keyword> standards that misuse henna and ignore its cultural value. Diviney<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@jazzmined/video/7052681646151126273?_t=8Q7EG16AGO6&amp;_r=1"> posted a response</a> to the video and wrote a caption that read, "Indians have been telling y'all not to use henna like this since day one but I guess y'all wanna learn the hard way." She told Insider that in India, where she's currently living, it's "common knowledge" not to use henna on the face because of how sensitive the skin is. The creator of the original TikTok did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. Dermatologists warn that "henna freckles" can cause skin irritation, and recommend using natural henna dyes instead of products with chemicals and preservatives,<a href="https://www.allure.com/story/henna-freckles-technique-tiktok-trend"> according to the beauty magazine Allure</a>.Diviney's TikTok now has 970,000 views and sparked a debate in the comments, where some viewers accused her of trying to "claim" ownership of henna and exclude others from using it. "Indians are not just gatekeeping for the sake of gatekeeping," Diviney told Insider. "We are genuinely trying to help you by showing you how to use it in the appropriate way." Lakshmi Nair, an 18-year-old Indian woman who was born in Canada, also spoke out against henna freckles<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@gorlgoneferal/video/6972697039775796485?_t=8RU8RuZJbPC&amp;_r=1"> on TikTok</a>. She told Insider she believes when people participate in trends that use henna "incorrectly," it "discredits" the significance of her culture and the way the product is typically used.<h2>The trend also promotes Eurocentric beauty standards, the creators said</h2>Ome Khan, a 30-year-old Pakistani-American who also<a href="https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMLXVAQRc/"> criticized henna freckles on TikTok</a>, told Insider that as a child, other kids would often mock her for wearing henna to school by calling her names like "poop hands" and "poop feet." Lawyer and<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thesouthasianfeminist?lang=en"> anti-racism activist Kudrat Dutta Chaudhary</a> told Insider it is understandable that South Asian women feel this way about the trend, but also said it's important to note that some people of color, such as people from Latin American communities, have spoken out about being<a href="https://laist.com/news/on-life-as-a-freckle-faced-redheaded-mexican-american-from-southeast-los-angeles"> bullied</a><a href="https://hiplatina.com/freckled-latinas-nicknames/"> for</a> having freckles as children.<h2>Experts say when white creators benefit from beauty trends like this, they become even more harmful</h2>Khan and Nair, who both said they've been mocked for wearing henna, said the trend implies that South Asian culture is only "cool" when white creators show an interest in it, and they pointed to<a href="https://everydayfeminism.com/2016/05/yoga-cultural-appropriation/"> yoga</a> and<a href="https://uproxx.com/life/chai-tea-company-backlash-cultural-appropriation/"> chai</a> as other examples of how their culture has been "whitewashed" and reduced to "fads" and "trends." Chaudhary told Insider these comparisons are linked to a "colonial hangover." She said that the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/indian-women-had-to-kill-themselves-and-other-bitter-stories-of-british-colonialism-revealed-in-a-podcast/articleshow/74169159.cms">notion that white people were intellectually and culturally superior to people of color</a> — reinforced when India was a colony of the British Empire, before it gained its independence in 1947 and established its constitution in 1950 — still persists against marginalized communities today.One consequence of this is that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/advertising/brands/article/fair-and-lovely-to-drop-fair-from-its-name-but-will-that-be-enough-to-appeal-to-new-age-consumers/articleshow/76631286.cms">skin-whitening</a> products, which are largely thought to promote Eurocentric beauty ideals, are still popular in India."Growing up in India, I noticed that any product that was endorsed by a white face was always seen as more legitimate. Lekha Nettem, a 20-year-old South Asian TikToker who<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@saddesigirl/video/6865511801069587718?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1"> decided to try henna freckles</a> despite the controversy surrounding the trend, told Insider she feels that as long as people buy their henna from women of color, for example at their local Indian market, they "keep her culture alive" and "stay more connected to the root of the cultural practice." However, Davina Rajoopillai, a marketing and advertising expert who<a href="https://www.wearebadlands.com/"> cofounded Badlands, a company focused on diversity in television and social media,</a> said that even if trends like this boost sales for products like henna, South Asian businesses should gain credit and equity on top of the profit. To achieve this, white creators would need to credit and promote these businesses for them to truly benefit, Rajoopillai told Insider, adding that TikTok should also make an effort to promote South Asian businesses, in the same way that<a href="https://creators.instagram.com/blog/instagram-enhanced-tags-creator-credits-announcement"> Instagram recently added new tags to help Black businesses</a> receive more credit on the app. TikTok did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. Like Maira, Rajoopillai said these trends point to broader issues of inequality in the beauty industry, because South Asian women have had to "work hard at being represented." The film industry has been entertaining us for decades with heart-warming stories, but what really doesn’t work well with the Indian audience are the movies with religion-based scripts. They rub the Indian audience in a wrong way. Take for instance the recent case of ‘Mohalla Assi’, a film based on religious issues that hasn’t been released but is already facing the ire. And this is not happening for the first time when religious overtones of a film have created celluloid controversy. Here are five such flicks, which made headlines due to their sensitive contents and were tagged ‘outrageous’. 
		 

Mohalla Assi 
 
 
 Directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, this Sunny Deol-starrer movie is in news due to its abusive language and portrayal of Lord <keyword id="33379" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shiva">Shiva</keyword> in poor light. Following a petition, a court has recently restrained the makers of the film from releasing on July 3 till further orders. The court has observed that it might “hurt religious sentiments of the people” and said it should not hit theatres till the alleged offensive scenes and dialogues are edited. The film is based in the locality of Assi Ghat in the holy city of Varanasi. It is, reportedly, based on 2004 Hindi novel 'Kashi Ka Assi' written by Kashinath Singh. The movie also stars Ravi Kishan, Sakshi Tanwar in lead roles.

 Many cases were registered against this <keyword id="6354633" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rajkumar-Hirani">Rajkumar Hirani</keyword> film ever since its first poster was unveiled that had a nude <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword>, posing with a transistor. The movie, a satire on religious beliefs and superstitions, was released across India on December 19, 2014. Aamir Khan played an alien and unravels the ugly face of human greed. Hindutva groups took offence to certain scenes and dialogues while others criticized ‘PK’ that it “unnecessarily” mocked Hindu beliefs and rituals. Police lodged complaints against the film under Sections 153-A, 295-A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, it did not affect the box office collection of ‘PK’, which has crossed Rs 650 crore mark. The film also stars <keyword id="6357860" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Anushka-Sharma">Anushka Sharma</keyword>, <keyword id="21678" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="sushant-singh">Sushant Singh</keyword> Rajput, Boman Irani, and <keyword id="7645" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sanjay-Dutt">Sanjay Dutt</keyword>. 
 
Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela 
 
 
 This <keyword id="6358308" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="sanjay-leela-bhansali">Sanjay Leela Bhansali</keyword> film was mired in controversy from the time its title was announced. The original name of the movie was ‘Ram-Leela’, but was changed to ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, following a petition. According to the petitioner, actor <keyword id="106133" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ranveer-Singh">Ranveer Singh</keyword>, who played the role of Ram in the film, was a womanizer and his role was a character assassination of Lord <keyword id="52950" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rama">Rama</keyword>. A case was later filed against Bhansali, Ranveer Singh and <keyword id="598" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Deepika-Padukone">Deepika Padukone</keyword> for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of the people and promoting communal disharmony. However, the film was released on November 15, 2013 and collected over Rs 200 crore on the box office. 
 
Son of Sardaar 
 
 
 Directed by Ashwni Dhir, the film was tagged as objectionable by the Sikh community due to a Lord Shiva tattoo on actor <keyword id="4230" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ajay-Devgan">Ajay Devgan</keyword>’s chest and a couple of allegedly outrageous dialogues. He played the role of a Sikh protagonist in the movie. Being a producer, he assured the <keyword id="54270" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shiromani-Gurdwara-Parbandhak-Committee">Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee</keyword> (SGPC) that the objectionable elements would be removed before its release. The actor also promised that a print of the film would be sent to the SGPC before the release. The movie was released on November 13, 2012 and also stars <keyword id="62210" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sonakshi-Sinha">Sonakshi Sinha</keyword>, <keyword id="6371319" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Juhi-Chawla">Juhi Chawla</keyword> and Sanjay Dutt. 
 
OMG-Oh My God 
 
 This Akshay Kumar-starrer was a mix of satire, fable and fantasy that brings audience’s attention towards the commercialisation of religion. Although the movie insists on the existence of God, it was not like by Hindutva groups. The story was an adaptation of a successful Gujarati play, which also became a hit in Hindi and Marathi languages. Directed by Umesh Shukla, the movie was released on September 28, 2012. An FIR was later lodged against the director, producers and actors of the film for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of the people. The movie also stars actors <keyword id="6357914" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Paresh-Rawal">Paresh Rawal</keyword> and <keyword id="14672" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mithun-Chakraborty">Mithun Chakraborty</keyword>.
