<ul><li>Data is booming and will only continue to increase as 5G networks come in. </li><li>Prakash Mallya, MD for marketing at <keyword id="28115" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intel">Intel</keyword> India explains why India’s data regulations need to stay open to support that growth and how monetisation is the biggest challenge that telecom operators face. </li><li>He points out that India’s growth has always been disruption led and how every service will need to be cloud based. </li></ul>As Indian businesses and consumers eagerly await <keyword id="3660030" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="5g-connectivity">5G connectivity</keyword>, the government is expected to do more than auction the spectrum. It also needs to figure out how it wants to manage its data. "Every country will regulate data differently, and India would do the same, in my opinion," Prakash Mallya, MD for marketing at Intel India, told Business Insider at the <keyword id="4293052" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Mobile-Congress">India Mobile Congress</keyword> (IMC) 2019. India’s <keyword id="6996546" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="personal-data-privacy-bill">Personal Data Privacy Bill</keyword> is yet to be finalised and the National Digital Communications Policy 2018 doesn’t address 5G networks. The first draft of the proposed Personal Data Privacy Bill caused a lot of concern for consumers and businesses alike with vague terminology. Experts also wonder if its Its broad definition of data can translate into restrictive regulations. "Historically everything that we have been able to do — the innovation and disruption — is open and everybody can participate," said Mallya. He believes that "it will go down this way" because India’s technological advancement is based on digitisation and impact. The hybrid approach As workloads and regulations continue to evolve, one size will not fit all. Companies are likely to take a hybrid or multi-cloud approach according to the requirements of regulation. Some data would be stored on premise — like design data, proprietary information of customers or anything that’s "make or break" for the company. Other data — like e-mail, human resources and accounting — can end up on the cloud. "You can have multiple cloud service providers, some on-premise, and you could have the private cloud — all working seamlessly within the organisation. You would be able to burst out onto different clouds at different points of time," explained Mallya. Telecom companies and monetisation "Ultimately, telecom operators and all the other industry need usage models, which can make money for the industry," stated Mallya. With 5G coming in, telecom operators are going to have a lot more data coming in. This is especially true since most are looking at businesses and large operators for monetization opportunities. "They (telecom operators) engage with consumers, they build businesses and with the advent of 5G and a lot of data coming in — I would profess that I see a big play for telecom service providers in the area of cloud. Every service delivery would be cloud based," said Mallya. In order for service delivery to be effective, these networks need to be flexible and agile. "You can’t throw that data back into the data center to analyse. You need low latency which is why edge becomes important," explained Mallya. Edge is basically a point between the data center and the service provider, which allows data to be processed closer to where it’s actually being created. According to International Data Corporation (IDC), it’s a "mesh network of micro data centers that process or store critical data locally and push all received data to a central data center or cloud storage repository, in a footprint of less than 100 square feet." "That’s why to have an edge which has intelligence and capabilities to really use the data that comes through right at the minute over there to analyse and throw back intelligent information is going to be viral," said Mallya. Indian vague data regulations should change to aid innovation says Intel executive

But on the sidelines — as telecommunication companies await the 5G spectrum auction — vendors are helping them improve the existing 4G network. Huawei, the Chinese tech giant, is helping Vodafone Idea optimise its 4G network using artificial intelligence (AI). But, it's doing it on 5G technology. Vodafone Idea's Massive MIMO technology is 5G ready and is the third largest deployment in the world so far. The company claims that this is the first time that an AI-based solution has been used to optimise multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) technology — an essential element of standard 4G networks. "The deployment solution will enable Vodafone Idea to enhance their pre-5G Massive MIMO network," stated Jay Chen, CEO of <keyword id="146229" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Huawei-India">Huawei India</keyword>. What is MIMO? MIMO multiplies the capacity of a radio link by letting antennas receive signals from multiple pathways. By using AI, Huawei can increase the capacity of Vodafone Idea's 4G network by making it more efficient. "Adding AI capabilities to India's largest deployment of Massive MIMO for enhancing user experience is a further testament of our commitment to create a future-proof network for the digital era," stated Vishant Vora, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Vodafone Idea. Huawei's random forest algorithm collects and analyses the data to model and predict how the 4G network can be optimised. Since Massive MIMO is meant for 5G, it's able to use the 5G technology to leverage 4G connectivity. Huawei's fate in India is uncertain with the Department of Telecommunication asserting that the company's participation in <keyword id="7511674" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IMC-2019">IMC 2019</keyword> doesn't mean that it will be allowed in the 5G trials. After being banned from trading with US companies, Huawei has been facing global resistance over its 5G technology. Both China and US alike delivered their 'preferences' to India over Huawei. But Indian government is keeping uncharacteristically mum over allowing the Chinese tech giant participate in its 5G trials. "The decision has not been taken yet," <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/imc-invitation-to-huawei-not-a-nod-for-5g-play-dot/articleshow/71573016.cms">stated</a> a Department of Telecommunications (DoT) official. Huawei's offer of a 'no back door' agreement Huawei in the meanwhile is carrying on with its efforts to appease the government. It is also willing to sign a 'no back door' pact. This means that Huawei won't have access to any of the customer network's India without prior consent and allay any concerns of cybersecurity vulnerabilities from the vendor. "From the very beginning, I have confidence that Indian industry, the India market will welcome Huawei because I have contributed a lot with my unique value," Jay Chen, CEO of <keyword id="146229" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Huawei-India">Huawei India</keyword>, told <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/huawei-india/chinas-huawei-says-open-to-no-backdoor-agreement-with-india-idINKBN1WT26B">Reuters</a>. "I am ready to sign (a no-backdoor agreement)," he added. He further said the <keyword id="30067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword> has apprised that data on wilful defaulters are available with it since 2019, and as per data reported by banks to CRILC, the increase in total number of unique wilful defaulters reported by nationalised banks was 248 during 2019-20, which has decreased to 156 during 2020-21. In another reply, Karad said the gross NPAs reported by public and private sector banks to CRILC (including exposures that are not categorised as corporate exposure on account of being between ₹5 crore and ₹7.5 crore) accounted for 66.8 per cent of the total gross NPAs. Indian government doesn't want anything to do with cryptocurrencies but is open to blockchain technology

Not only have telecom companies in the US and South Korea already offering these services, Indian telcos are also starting to try and test the technology. Vodafone Idea is already using 5G technology to improve its 4G offerings. India is also awaiting the auction of 5G spectrum, and its use cases and applications are buzzing at India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2019 in New Delhi. At this event, Business Insider India caught up with <keyword id="8222657" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="preeti-nagarajan">Preeti Nagarajan</keyword>, Head of Strategy for Business Area Networks at Ericsson. She highlights the challenges that India will have to overcome before the dream of 5G becomes a reality. 1. The need for a spectrum The rest of world may already by rolling out 5G connectivity to its users but, in India, 5G spectrum is yet to be allocated. This means full-fledged trials are still pending which is needed for telecom operators to test their technology. "India needs spectrum, let’s start there. It was very promising to hear that, before the end of the financial year, we should have the 5G spectrum auction in India. That needs to happen," said Nagarajan. 2. Spectrum is too expensive One of the reasons that the 5G spectrum auction has been delayed in India is because its too expensive for telecom companies. India’s debt-ridden operators are still reeling under the pressure to keep 4G costs low. But, there may be hope on the horizon. "They will come up with innovative policy solutions for pricing the spectrum. This helps our customers, the operators, to start bringing 5G in," stated Nagarajan. The Indian government announced that it is looking into new ways to price the spectrum to accommodate the requests of the telecom companies at IMC. 3. Finding space for the spectrum The biggest challenge when deploying 5G is acquisition of sites, according to Nagarajan. "Now we’re talking about Massive MIMO equipment, which are huge pieces of equipment out there. And, for every piece of spectrum out there, there’s equipment already at the site," she explained. As network connectivity expands, more towers and more antennas will be required. The And ownership of site will also have a greater role to play. "It’s extremely important that we own the site. And we help and enable our customers to own their sites in a good way," said Nagarajan. 4. <keyword id="8222656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="affordable-5g-devices">Affordable 5G devices</keyword> On the consumer front, even if 5G network connectivity comes in, affordable 5G phones are yet to make into the market. "So, I think it’s in the roadmap. The technology is there for it," said Nagarajan. Earlier at IMC, Qualcomm announced that they have partners working on affordable 5G devices but it’s yet to be seen when they will make their way to India. Here are the biggest challenges for India as it rolls out its 5G network, according to a strategy expert

"Even the local kirana shop owner can set up his own AI bot in under 5 minutes," said one of the demo experts at India Mobile Congress 2019 (IMC 2019). Jio video call bot can be accessed by a simple 4G phone call without asking customers to install an additional app onto their smartphones. As per the live demo, business owners have to just sign up and choose a profile. The Jio Bot Maker will suggest a preloaded set of questions to which businesses can record their responses. They can customise their answers on the text before hand, and even augment the question if required. Going beyond video Some customers might not want to video call every time they have a question — even if they are just talking to a bot. So, Jio is working on giving users the versatility between video, text and voice calls. They're developing a customer service platform for users which can switch between the three methods of communication, anytime during a customer service call. "This also addresses privacy concerns for users who might not necessarily want to show themselves on video," explained the Jio demo expert. So, a user can be on video and switch over to just voice if they have an unexpected visitor or even text, if they have to engage in a conversation offline. Meanwhile, the customer service bot will not be affected by these changes and will be able to answer questions in continuity. Jio has already sold the Jio Bot to HDFC. The banking major is testing the software in-house before launching it for their customers. If you ask the assistant anything that's outside of sphere of knowledge — like an non-banking related question — he'll respond by asking you ask something else. Jio developed the video call bot in partnership with Radisys, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries in the US.

In its latest report, the firm predicts that Reliance Retail’s market value will skyrocket to a massive $200 billion in two years. A big chunk of the value created will come from serving the kirana stores. Since 90% of India’s retail market is unorganized and dominated by kirana stores--Reliance might have a wide market to play in. So what is it that Reliance is offering these small stores? <ol><li>Reliance Retail intends to help shopkeepers enter the new digital age and will be aided by an agile Jio, its innovation and country-wide strong network. </li><li>RIL’s Point of Sale (PoS) offering (or New commerce business, as the company calls it) will help merchants take online orders, generate GST-compliant bills, get inventory decline alerts etc. It can also help them migrate to GST and other tax regimes easily.</li><li>RIL also benefits by being able to offer Kiranas a faster delivery of replenished stocks, according to the report.</li><li>Even brands and consumers benefit in this initiative with Brands benefiting from better data analytics, better ads and promotion of their products. Customers could get access to discounts directly from brands without the merchant looking to offer incentives. Trials have already stated for this service, BoFA-ML said.</li><li>Ambani intends to add more services and offerings. At the IMC 2019 event, it introduced an app which will allow small businesses to make <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tech/enterprise/news/reliance-jio-is-offering-a-new-bot-maker-for-small-businesses-to-build-their-own-video-call-assistants/articleshow/71590602.cms">their own chatbot</a>.
