New <keyword id="19900881" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi" source="keywords">Delhi</keyword>: Japanese auto major <keyword id="19965528" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="honda" source="keywords">Honda</keyword> on Wednesday said it has started joint research on AI technologies with <keyword id="19896445" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi" source="keywords">IIT Delhi</keyword> and IIT Bombay with plans to develop driver assistance and automated driving technologies applicable in various regions of the world, including India. The joint research is aimed to further advance Honda CI (Cooperative Intelligence)-- the original Honda AI that enables mutual understanding between machines and people, the company said in a statement. Honda Cars India Ltd (HCIL), a Honda subsidiary in India, will sign a joint research contract with the two IITs. "The IITs are a home to a large number of excellent researchers and engineers, and through the joint research with those institutes, Honda will strive to advance the underlying technologies of CI, with an eye toward the future applications for technologies that reduce traffic collisions and enable automated driving," it said. With an aim to achieve further advancement of CI, Honda and IITs have set joint research themes such as recognition of the surrounding environment and cultivation of cooperative behaviour, and will conduct research and development while utilising the cutting-edge AI technologies, it added. Under the partnership, for each research theme, Honda associates and IIT professors will engage with IIT students for planning, designing, developing and testing technologies which work beyond the confines of the laboratory and thereby proceed with the research and development more flexibly and with a high degree of freedom, Honda said. "This will enable Honda and IITs to work in a more flexible environment with deeper exchange of academic and industry insights," it added. In addition, as part of this research, Honda with the help of IITs is aiming to conduct verification of driving assistance and automated driving technologies in the suburbs of Delhi and in Mumbai. Due to numerous variations in the road systems and a large number of road users, India has a complex traffic environment where situations that occur frequently are difficult for AI to predict. "By conducting technology verification in such a technically challenging environment, Honda and IITs will refine the underlying technologies of CI and strive to apply them to future driver assistance and automated driving technologies in various regions of the world, including India," the statement said. Honda said it has been actively hiring IIT graduates since 2019, and many of them are now playing key roles in the areas of mobility intelligence, including the research and development of CI.

Honda begins joint research with IIT Delhi, Bombay on AI technologies

In a world increasingly propelled by technology, university research makes for the foundation of any nation's economic growth. 
 In line with this, the much awaited Rs 100 crore Research Park at IIT-Bombay is all set to come up in the <keyword id="1003683" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Powai-Campus">Powai campus</keyword> this year. 
 
Even as the building will take another 2 years to complete, the good news is it will start functioning this year with a few firms who have already collaborated with the institute. 
 The research park aims to become a facilitator in bringing together <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword> and industry to expand R&amp;D collaboration and promote entrepreneurship. 
 
The new facility will enable IITB to become the nucleus of entrepreneurship in the Powai Valley, similar to the role played by Stanford University in the Silicon Valley and MIT in Route 128. 
 The facility will provide a diverse range of expertise in areas like energy, aviation, semiconductors, construction, IT and <keyword id="6354776" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom">Telecom</keyword>, automotive, chemical, industrial design, metals/material and Biotech/Pharma.

They have found a way to raise biofuel yield from commonly found aquatic weeds such as water hyacinths. 
 
According to a new study published in Nature Scientific Reports, researchers have shown that this weed — which contains up to 50 percent hemicelluloses — can now be used as an economic and abundant source of biofuel. 
 <keyword id="3921769" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saikat-Chakraborty">Saikat Chakraborty</keyword>, faculty member at the Department of Chemical Engineering and lead researcher of the <keyword id="3925325" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bioenergy-research-group">Bioenergy Research Group</keyword> at <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword> said - “We show that the secret to rapidly producing soluble sugars from amorphous natural polymers such as hemicelluloses lies in their smallest scale-the pores." 
 
The researchers have uncovered the pore-scale phenomena that result in “fourfold increase in the yields of fermentable sugars and bioethanol” from hemicelluloses. 
 
“It turns out that three quarters of the soluble sugars we obtain for generation of bioethanol are produced from the pore-scale reactions. So increasing the polymer’s porosity and degree of swelling will enhance the deconstruction of hemicelluloses from plant cell walls, thus increasing bioethanol,” the authors are quoted as saying, in the study. 
 
Hemicelluloses are the second most abundant natural polymer on earth — after cellulose — and a new technology engendered from this pore-scale phenomena could rapidly produce biofuels from locally available plant sources. 
 
Apart from water-hyacinth, hemicellulose-based bioethanol can also be produced from commonly available grasses, red and green algae, etc., which have 2.5 to 3 times more hemicellulose than cellulose. 
 
Up next is another study where Scientists at the institute’s chemical engineering department and PK Sinha Centre for Bioenergy are working to transform these fundamental insights into new biofuel technologies that would help fight climate change.

IIT-Bhubaneswar researchers have been working with a group of US-based scientists to develop a system that can help in improving prediction of extreme untoward weather events. 
 
For this purpose, researchers in climate science at the institute are studying coastal inundation. 
 
They want to develop Land-Ocean-Atmospheric Modelling System to improve storm predictions so that people residing in the vulnerable coastal states can be saved from huge damages caused by natural calamities. 
 
This is being seen as a necessary step in view of the erratic and extreme weather events due to climate change and global warming. According to US-based scientists, climate change has altered the rainfall pattern in the subcontinent. 
 
"We now receive a huge amount of rainfall within a short window of time followed by long dry spells. Besides, the rainfall and storm surge during tropical cyclones seriously affects large shoreline populations causing destruction," says IIT-B Professor UC Mohanty. 
 He adds - "Storm surge on the southern coastline of the state from Ganjam district up to <keyword id="60510" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Visakhapatnam">Visakhapatnam</keyword> in Andhra Pradesh could be of 2-3 meters while a cyclone of the same intensity could whip up waves of 10-12 meters in the Balasore coast in the north.It is because, the sea is very shallow off the Balasore coast while it is deep along the southern coastline." 
 
Since coastal states are the most prone to tsunamis and storms, they are likely to be the worst affected at a time when the number of tropical cyclones in a season could still remain the same, but their category or intensity may be higher.

IITians are working hard with US Scientists to improve cyclonic predictions in India so you can be warned well before time

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (<keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword>) Guwahati have developed a <keyword id="528548" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prosthetic-leg" source="Orion">prosthetic leg</keyword> specifically designed for Indian conditions. The <keyword id="14184479" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="low-cost-prosthetic-leg" source="Orion">low cost prosthetic leg</keyword> is suitable for uneven terrain and supports Indian needs such as cross-legged sitting, and deep squatting. It is also adjustable for the different age groups and multiple stages of prosthesis use. Prosthesis development in India faces many challenges. Highly functional mobility for amputees requires devices with advanced features which are expansive and cannot be afforded by many. Further, affordable prosthetics that are available in the market have many functional limitations. In addition, the Indian lifestyle and uneven terrain require prosthetics with specifications unique to India, which are not widely available in the market. "The knee joint developed by our team has a spring assisted deep squat mechanism, which helps to use the Indian toilet system more comfortably; the knee rotating mechanism helps to have cross legged sitting," said Professor S. Kanagaraj, Department of Mechanical Engineering, <keyword id="186684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-guwahati" source="Orion">IIT Guwahati</keyword>, in a statement. "The locking mechanism helps to reduce the fear of falling of patients while walking in an unknown terrain; adjustable link length in a knee helps to have either more stability or easy flexing depending on age and requirement of the patients. Overall, the knee joint is designed to meet the Indian lifestyle which other products fail to fulfil." Prototypes of the models are currently undergoing trials, and it is being tested as per international standard loading conditions up to 100 kg body weight. Cost of around Rs 25,000 is ensured using the technology, the Institute said. IIT Guwahati develops a prosthetic leg for Indians who want to squat and sit cross-legged

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here is going to set up a <keyword id="6422364" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-technology">space technology</keyword> cell in collaboration with the <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (ISRO). The announcement was made on Friday by IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao, a day ahead of the varsity's 50th annual convocation where ISRO Chief K Sivan will be the chief guest. "IIT Delhi is going to set up a space technology centre in collaboration with ISRO to contribute to the space technology research," Rao told reporters. With the move, IIT Delhi will join the league of other premiere institutions like IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee where the Space Technology Cells (STCs) have been set up to play a major role in taking up the space technology research and applications to the newer heights.

India’s IIT Ropar makes it to the top 500 global universities for the first time

Hyderabad, July 9 (IANS) Graphics giant Nvidia, here on Thursday, unveiled a technology centre at the Indian Institute of Technology that will accelerate research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its commercial adoption. The Nvidia AI Technology Centre will help accelerate research by the 220 IIT Hyderabad faculty members. The collaboration between IIT Hyderabad and Nvidia will focus on advancing AI research in the areas of agriculture and smart cities, besides language understanding. The projects to be taken up included increasing crop yield using AI algorithms, applying AI-based solutions to support safer transportation systems and better ways of managing traffic. "The combination of Nvidia's leading-edge technology for AI and some of the finest minds in the country from IIT Hyderabad will bring synergy to help find solutions to uniquely Indian challenges, be it enhancing crop yield or safer cities," said B.S. Murty, Director, IIT Hyderabad. "This will build on the strong AI capabilities of IIT Hyderabad, including the country's first B.Tech in AI programme," he said. IIT Hyderabad already houses two Nvidia DGX-1TM systems and an Nvidia DGX-2TM system, dedicated to research at the institute. "Nvidia is powering the AI revolution across research facilities everywhere. IIT Hyderabad, Nvidia team up for AI research centre

IIT council is scheduled to have a meeting next week, in which the HRD ministry will propose a new research scholar scheme to identify 1,000 bright BTech students from premier engineering colleges, like IITs, to be given direct admission into PhD programmes. 
 
"BTech passouts from IITs who have job experience and are interested in research should be enrolled in PhD," a source told TNN. 
 
The reason behind this step is the increasing faculty crunch that IITs are facing, despite around 2,000 PhDs coming out of IITs each year. "When it comes to hiring teachers, IITs are very selective. The need is to improve the quality of PhD and attract bright IIT students to undertake research," a source said. 
 
Government is also considering hefty scholarships to students who opt for PhD after engineering. "It will not be big enough to compensate the salary a IIT student gets after BTech but it will probably be among the highest," one official said.

IIT engineers will be allowed entry into PhD to solve faculty crunch

New Delhi, Mar 9 () Aero engines major Rolls-Royce on Monday said it has entered into a collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to promote and explore opportunities for joint research programs. The company will also roll-out a 'Technical Higher Study Framework' to facilitate higher education for its engineers, in partnership with IIT Madras, Rolls-Royce said in a statement. An MoU has been signed between the company and IIT Madras for the collaboration. As part of the MoU, Rolls-Royce and IIT Madras will also aim to pursue advanced research in areas of relevance to future technological and programmatic needs of the company, it added. "The association with IIT Madras is another step in our efforts to promote collaborative research programs with like-minded partners in India. We look forward to exploring areas where we can co-develop technological solutions," Rolls-Royce India and South Asia President Kishore Jayaraman said. He further said, "at the same time, we are keen to leverage this collaboration with a premier technology institute like IIT Madras to promote upskilling and professional development of our engineering talent, and facilitate higher education and research in areas of strategic interest." Commenting on the collaboration, Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research Associate Dean, IIT Madras, V Kamakoti said, "the interaction with Rolls-Royce will certainly induce multi-faceted interdisciplinary technology exploration involving the diverse specializations available at IIT Madras and mapping them into specific application areas of high practical value." Under the collaboration, Rolls-Royce will sponsor select employees keen to pursue Masters and PhD level studies, as part of its Technical Higher Study Framework, in partnership with IIT Madras. To qualify for the program, employees must first clear the IIT Madras selection process, and their topic should be aligned with Rolls-Royce strategic research priorities and capabilities, it added. The program is open to all permanent employees at the Rolls-Royce Engineering Centre in Bengaluru who have completed 36 months of service with the company.
