IIT-Kharagpur outperformed 276 institutes from across the country and maximum awards it won were of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=medical">medical</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=biotech">biotech</a> innovations. The appreciations were in engineering category. 
 
"After four rounds of evaluation, 19 teams have been selected for innovation awards and 24 for appreciation. Of the 19 awards, 15 awardees in Medical and Biotech innovations category will get Department of Biotechnology sponsored (BITAC-SRISTI) grant of Rs 15 lakh each to further their prototypes," an IIT release said. 
 
GYTI 2016 was a pan-India competition with over 2,363 innovation entries in 50 technology domains from 276 institutes from 26 states and two Union Territories.

IIT-Kharagpur shows how to innovate, bags maximum laurels at innovation awards

<keyword id="6421805" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="International-Womens-Day">International Women’s Day</keyword> saw a lot of examples on how the society needs to contribute so that women can be treated as an equal. In this regard, one of the IITs has taken a step forward and done what most companies should be doing for their <keyword id="32919" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-employees">women employees</keyword>. 
 The <keyword id="55119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword>, <keyword id="6357441" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kharagpur">Kharagpur</keyword>, has set up a creche within its campus to ensure that kids are looked after even when their mothers are working. Due to this step, young mothers, faculty members and non-teaching staff of IIT-Kharagpur are heaving a sigh of relief. 
 
53 happy babies have already enrolled in the facility, which was earlier a bungalow inside the campus and was remodelled to a creche. The creche-montessori playhouse-cum care-giving centre will handle babies to 10 year olds. Children going to primary schools can come directly to the care-centre for food, rest and homework, till their mothers are free to collect them. 
 
The creche has 14 support staff, including six teachers, six ayahs, one attendant and one supervisor. It opens at 7.30am and remains open till late in the evening. It is fully air-conditioned and packed with specialized Montessori teaching equipment, furniture, play area, activity zone and a computer lab. 
 IIT-Kharagpur director <keyword id="1743506" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Partha-Pratim-Chakraborty">Partha Pratim Chakraborty</keyword> said: "The creche was a crying need. We wanted our talented women on campus to put in their best but it was often difficult for them to work at their optimum leaving their babies at home."

IITs are known around the world for being one of the best engineering colleges. However, one of them will soon be recognized as the best medical college as well. 
 
After HRD ministry nod, IIT-Kharagpur is now the first among IITs to offer medicine courses to students soon. Interestingly, IIT-Kharagpur was also the first IIT to have a management school. The <keyword id="2872909" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vinod-Gupta-School-of-Management">Vinod Gupta School of Management</keyword> was started in 1993 and is often ranked among the top 20 <keyword id="112381" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="business-schools">business schools</keyword> in the country. 
 
You may think why are IITs venturing into the medical domain. The idea, as per the institute, is to be a research hospital where technological developments can take place, and local patients can benefit from them. 
 Plan is to kick-start the new course by 2019 with a batch of 50 students. However, a 400-bed hospital to be set up on the campus which will act as a teaching facility, will start admitting patients from mid-2018 itself. The super-speciality hospital will include departments, such as cardiology, neurology, orthopedic, out-patient, besides a medical diagnostic centre and an emergency ward. The permission from the <keyword id="49468" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Medical-Council-of-India">Medical Council of India</keyword> will come only after this hospital starts operating. 
 
As per sources, several hospitals of repute have been approached to manage IIT-K hospital's operations. Associated doctors will have an opportunity to carry out medico-technical research. "We aim to introduce videography during treatment, with the patient's permission. This will allow us to gather information, which can be transmitted anywhere across the globe to other doctors, who can then go through the treatment procedure and records to make recommendations," said the institute deputy director. 
 Chances are medical aspirants won't have to appear for <keyword id="6361994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET">NEET</keyword>, as IIT-K plans to have a separate entrance examination. Notably, IITs are governed by a separate law, which enables them to hold their own admission exams, like for engineering courses.

The process to shortlist the names of institutions is still in progress and the committee has still not submitted the report, said Economic Times citing EEC chairperson N Gopalaswami Among the public institutes on government’s radar include IIT-Madras, Delhi University, Jadavpur University, IIT-Kharagpur and Anna University. According to the report, the government may also shortlist KREA University and another greenfield varsity like the Jio Institute. The Indian government may shortlist 14 more educational institutes for ‘eminence’ tag

IIT-Kharagpur concluded its first phase of 2021-22 <keyword id="6361907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="placement" source="Orion">placement</keyword> session in the second week of December, with over 1,600 job offers and 900-plus internship opportunities, a statement issued by the institute said. The season had begun with more than 500 pre-placement offers (PPO), which soon jumped to 1000-plus offers on the second day, "a milestone across all IITs", the statement said on Saturday. The institute recorded 48 offers in the CTC range of Rs 50 lakh to Rs 2.64 crore. Over 45 plus offers came from international companies, the statement said. This year, five foreign students also secured jobs at the session. More than 300 companies participated in the first phase across various sectors, including software, analytics, consulting, core engineering companies, banking and high-frequency trading. Companies that recruited students in the just-concluded session are Airbus, <keyword id="8445586" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="accenture-japan" source="Orion">Accenture Japan</keyword>, Da Vinci Derivatives, Excel, <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword>, <keyword id="10387" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="microsoft" source="Orion">Microsoft</keyword>, Qualcomm, Squarepoint Capital, N K Securities, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Steel, among others. The chairman of the institute's Career Development Centre, A <keyword id="247972" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rajakumar" source="Orion">Rajakumar</keyword>, said "strong curriculum of <keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword> KGP and technical skills of students" were reasons behind the grand success. The next phase of the placement session is scheduled to start in the second week of January 2023. More core companies are expected to offer placements and internship opportunities to the students in the second phase, Rajakumar added.

According to a statement, the agreement would also enhance the quality of human resource by virtue of advanced training and exchange of knowledge. 
 
Tentative areas of collaborative research would be cyber physical systems, information security, life science, energy storage devices and materials and underwater vehicles. 
 
The directed basic and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=applied+research+">applied research</a> initiatives would be aimed to achieve self-reliance in select <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=defence+technologies">defence technologies</a>, it said. 
 
The agreement would also facilitate the bilateral mobility of faculty, researchers and students and resource sharing between both institutions, it added.

DRDO and IIT-Kharagpur to take defence technologies to new heights

<keyword id="3071705" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-CEO-Sundar-Pichai">Google CEO Sundar Pichai</keyword> is visiting India today and will delivering a keynote address at an event of Google India, outlining plans of the company in country. 
 
Pichai is not expected to make any big ticket announcements or launches in his maiden visit to India after assuming the top post at Google. 
 
He will be meeting Google executives, media, developers, entrepreneurs and marketers, and is likely to share vision on how technology can change people's lives for the better. 
 
The Google CEO will also meet resident Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. 
 
Pichai will meet students of Shri Ram College of Commerce for a chat session. 
 
Indian-origin Pichai was born in Chennai in 1972 and pursued his PhD at Stanford University after attending IIT-Kharagpur . 
 
His last visit to India was in September 2014 when Pichai launched Android One.

IIT-Madras, IIT-Kharagpur, DU, Banaras Hindu University, University of Hyderabad gets ‘Institute of Eminence’ tag

Students who are preparing for The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), this is some good news for you. The IITs are going to increase student intake from the next academic session by 5%. 
 
Presently, the IITs take 10,572 students and after implementation of new regulation, the intake will go up to 11,100 in 2017. 
 The decision was taken during a recent meeting of the <keyword id="143931" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Joint-Admission-Board">Joint Admission Board</keyword> (JAB). 
 
However, many IITs are still toying with the idea due to infrastructure constraints. 
 
"We are in no position to admit extra students despite the government wanting each IIT to increase intake," a senior IIT-Kharagpur official, adding that the institutions have "serious space crunch”, told ET. 
 
"Even if we build accommodation, classrooms and other infrastructure from government funding, it takes many years to build world-class laboratories which offer state-of-the-art facilities to students. And we would not like to compromise on providing quality education," the official said. 
 The <keyword id="203622" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Council">IIT Council</keyword> has also approved day-boarding scholars, or the non-residential admission format, a source said, adding that the JAB has also approved an increase in the number of aspirants who can take the JEE (advanced) test - from 2 lakh to 2.2 lakh.
