The agreement between the two organisations was signed on April 15, 2020. The vaccine will be based on recombinant avian paramyxovirus-based vector platform, the company said. The recombinant avian paramyxovirus-1 will be used to express the immunogenic protein of SARS-CoV-2, which could then be used as a vaccine candidate for further study. The role of the institute is to produce the recombinant vaccine candidate. "IITG and Hester have collaborated to develop and manufacture a recombinant vaccine against COVID-19 disease as a preventive measure. Hester's involvement would be from master seed development up to release of the commercial vaccine," Rajiv Gandhi, CEO and MD, Hester Biosciences said. IIT Guwahati starts incubation centre to help its students turn entrepreneurs

New Delhi, Mar 4 () Maruti Suzuki India on Wednesday said it has collaborated with IIT Guwahati (IITG), Association for Overseas Technical Cooperation and Sustainable Partnerships (AOTS), Japan and Suzuki Motor Corporation for promotion of technical education and training. The institutional collaboration will facilitate promotion of education and training covering engineering courses and internship programmes in both India and Japan, the company said in a statement. It will also promote research for next generation technologies for benefit of both the countries, it added. An MoU was exchanged among the four parties at IIT Guwahati in the presence of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to India Satoshi Suzuki. Commenting on the collaboration, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) Managing Director and CEO Kenichi Ayukawa said,"This institutional collaboration will help us prepare students wider technical roles. Internship exposures at global and local levels will make students ready for global and local roles." It is a fine example of academia, industry and students coming together to create new benchmarks in technical education, he added. "I see this collaboration taking technical education to the next level," Ayukawa said. Under the collaboration, an engineering course, primarily related to automobiles, will be conducted by Suzuki Motor Corporation and MSI by providing training to students through lectures. As part of the curriculum Japanese language course will be conducted by AOTS. This course will be provided to students of IITG. AOTS, SMC and MSIL will arrange for faculty to conduct these at IITG, the statement said. New Delhi, Feb 1 (PTI) The Ministry of Tourism has been allocated Rs 2,400 crore in the Union Budget which is 18.42 per cent higher than the allocation for the financial year 2021-22, bringing some relief to a sector ravaged by the Covid pandemic. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her Budget speech extended the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) up to March 2023 and said its guarantee cover will be expanded by Rs 50,000 crore to a total of Rs 5 lakh crore. The additional will be earmarked exclusively for hospitality and related enterprises. Union Culture and Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy said, "I am grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat ka Budget'. As India celebrates 75 years of Independence with Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, we are entering Amrit Kaal and this budget presents a blueprint for India at 100." Of the proposed budget allocation of Rs 2,400 crore, a major portion of the outlay amounting to Rs 1,644 crore is earmarked for the development of infrastructure for tourism and Rs 421.50 crore is meant for promotion and publicity activities. From the budgetary allocation for major tourism infrastructure schemes, Rs 1181.30 crore is earmarked for the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, and Rs 235 crore for the Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual and Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) Scheme. Rs 130 crore is set apart for the development of iconic sites and the remaining would be used for funding other schemes like capacity building for service providers, Champion Service Sector Scheme, Information Technology and also to meet the establishment expenditure of the Ministry and its subordinate office, the India Tourism Offices, in the country and abroad. Sitharaman said in difficult hilly areas National Ropeways Development Programme will be taken up on PPP mode and may also cover congested urban areas, where a conventional mass transit system is not feasible. Contracts for eight ropeway projects for a length of 60 km will be awarded in 2022-23, she said. An allocation of Rs 227 crore has been earmarked for the northeastern States for the year 2022-23. Rs 98 crore has been allocated under the Tribal Sub Plan for the creation of tourism infrastructure in the tribal areas. The Loan Guarantee Scheme for Covid-affected Tourism Service Sector (LGSCATSS) has been started during the current financial year. Guarantee-free loan up to Rs 10 lakh each for Ministry of Tourism-approved travel and tourism stakeholders (tour operators, travel agents, tourist transport operators) and up to Rs 1.00 lakh each to RLGs/IITGs approved by MoT, Tourist Guides approved by state governments and Union Territory administrations is covered under the Scheme. Around 10 scheduled commercial banks have launched the scheme and cheques/ sanction letters have been distributed to some of the beneficiaries of LGSCATSS. An allocation of Rs. 12.50 crore is provided under the ministry's Budget for 2022-23 for this purpose. It said the extension of ECLGS expansion till 2023 with an additional corpus of Rs 50,000 crore dedicated to hospitality and allied industries will help provide relief. Guwahati, July 10 () Five more people succumbed to COVID-19 in Assam, pushing the death toll to 32 in the state, Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday. While four patients lost their lives at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, one died at the COVID-19 centre set up at IIT-Guwahati on the northern bank of the capital city, Sarma said. "Very sad to inform that four #COVID patients - Sri Rakhal Deb (42), Sri Ramesh Kayastha (68), Sri Sukhamay Bhowmik (72), Smt Arahi Baruah Saikia (70); admitted at GMCH ICU succumbed to the infection," Sarma tweeted. "With a heavy heart I inform you that Shri Hareswar Nath, 53 years old, a non-symptomatic patient with no co morbidities succumbed to COVID 19 at IITG COVID care centre. His oxygen levels plummeted to 90 within hours and he collapsed... My heartfelt condolences to their families," he said. New Delhi, Jul 6 () The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG) has introduced a course on UN-Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 in its B Tech curriculum, becoming the first IIT to do so, officials said. It will be offered to second year B Tech students as a compulsory course, to reorient the thinking of young and dynamic individuals towards the path of sustainable development, they said. According to officials, due to the interdisciplinary nature of the 17 SDGs, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, the nodal department for this course, has collaborated and pooled resources from eight other departments of the institute to design and implement the course. Faculty members from each of these departments will jointly conduct the course and will provide exposure to B Tech students on the technological, economical, ecological and societal aspects of the 17 SDGs. "With only 10 more years remaining to fulfil these objectives, it becomes very vital that the students are taught about the goals of inclusive and sustainable growth and through this course, offered by faculty members from across engineering, science and humanities departments, to prepare the students to play leading roles in 'Transforming the World," said T G Sitharam, Director, IIT Guwahati. Anamika Barua, course coordinator from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati, said, "This would be the first time the nine departments of IIT Guwahati have joined together to offer a course at the undergraduate level, realising that sustainability challenges and inclusive growth go hand-in-hand and has to be understood at the crossroads of science and society through an interdisciplinary lens". The police found him hanging from the ventilator in the bathroom," IITG public relations officer told IANS. In India, a person commits suicide every 40 seconds. And India has the highest student suicide rate with nearly 38,000 students committing suicide since 2015. The country witnesses nearly 28% of global suicides despite accounting for 18% of the population worldwide. To curb the growing number of suicides, the government now wants all institutions to have wellness centres. <ul><li>India’s premier technical institutions have witnessed several student suicides in the last few years. </li><li>IIT Guwahati witnessed a suicide case of a student intern from Japan — who was in India for an exchange programme. </li><li>In 2019 alone, about five students have committed suicide at IIT Madras and three at the Hyderabad campus. </li></ul>Each day, about six students commit suicide due to <a href="http://www.pondiuni.edu.in/smhic/objective.html">academic failure</a> in India. And there are many such students at IITs. An exchange student from Japan committed suicide at IIT Guwahati on November 21. "He was supposed to return to his parent university on November 30 after completion of the exchange programme. The police found him hanging from the ventilator in the bathroom," IITG public relations officer told IANS. IIT Madras which is home to some 8,000 students is also under police radar. They are probing the case of 19-year-old Humanities student — <keyword id="8339525" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fathima-Lateef">Fathima Lateef</keyword>, who allegedly killed herself in her hostel room on November 9. As per the police, Lateef’s scores were low in her internal exams. However, her parents say that alleged religious discrimination and harassment by a university professor is the cause of her death. Around the same time, an 18-year-old IIT Delhi died after falling from the fifth floor of the hostel building — and police suspect a suicide. While a few such stories do come to light after they make headlines, several others are buried in the case files. In 2019 alone, about five students have committed suicide at IIT Madras. In the last ten years, as many as 14 such cases were registered at the institute. Last month, a third-year student at <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/crime/story/iit-hyderabad-student-suicide-haunting-note-1560601-2019-07-02">IIT Hyderabad</a> committed suicide leaving behind a note saying, “Sorry I turned out to be a waste.” The student quoted academic pressure as the cause. And, this was the third suicide on campus in the last eight months. India has the highest student suicide rate with nearly 38,000 students committing suicide since 2015. The country witnesses nearly 28% of global suicides despite accounting for 18% of the population worldwide. Suicide is the second highest cause of unnatural dealths among youngsters. Every 40 seconds, a person commits suicide. According to WHO, every person who dies by suicide leads to more than 20 people trying to attempt it. Government push for wellness centres The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has laid out a counselling plan for country’s most prestigious institutes — Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) — and other higher educational institutions, The Print <a href="https://theprint.in/india/education/professional-counsellors-iit-student-suicide-hrd-ministry/299898/">reported</a>. Delhi, Mumbai and Madras campuses of IITs <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/policy/society/news/india-wants-more-iits-to-have-wellness-centers-to-curb-stress-and-depression/articleshow/71424045.cms">have wellness centres</a>. Roughly 10% of students seek counselling at IIT Madras, the Indian Express reported adding that a psychiatrist visits the campus everyday. The government now wants other institutions to have them as well. It is considering associating with more than 300 counsellors, including private partners via online mechanism.
