On the other hand, IIT’s Madras, Bombay, Roorkee and Guwahati campuses scored 158, 163, 140 and 119 offers respectively. The pre-placement offers almost doubled for IIT Hyderabad students at 37 — up from 19 last year. Two students of the campus bagged overseas offers as well. Industry experts say the spike in pre-placement offers is a result of summer internships. The oldest IIT at Kharagpur bagged over 500 internship offers, 39 more than last year. “Recruiting future employees through internship programmes is a tried and tested technique amongst employers. Students across 23 IITs received over 1,200 pre-placement offers ahead of the placement season

With the nationwide lockdown in force, the IIT-Kharagpur has advised its students to apply for summer internships in its departments, an official of the institute said on Saturday.It said the students can also approach companies that offer online internships, he said. Students of the IIT-Kharagpur will do internships from April to July this year. "We are allocating students to work as interns in ongoing projects in the institute," Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Professor Debasis Deb said. Meanwhile, the IIT-Kharagpur has formed a placement task force to liaise with companies to ensure that placement offers remain consistent amid the coronavirus outbreak, the institute tweeted. A total of 1,306 offers were made in 2019-20 fiscaland there has been no cancellation so far, it said. The IIT-Kharagpur has preponed summer holidays by a month to April 1 due to the coronavirus outbreak and all classes were conducted online since March 24, Deb said. The online classes helped the institute complete the classes as per the academic schedule, he added.

COVID-19 Lockdown: IIT-KGP advises students to apply for internships in its departments

New Delhi, Jun 30 () The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has broken its previous years' record of campus placements despite economic slowdown triggered by the COVID-19 outbreak and several companies pulling back their job offers, IIT officials said. According to the officials, over 1,100 offers, including multiple pre-placement ones, were made to the institute's graduating students from various national and international organisations. "IIT Delhi has broken all previous year records of job placements. This year, it was observed that the number of placement offers increased by 4 per cent. Approximately, 85.6 pc undergraduate and postgraduate students who availed placement services of the institute got placed," said S Dharmaraja, Head, Office of Career Services (OCS) "The remaining students explored for other options like higher studies, research, civil services examination, start-ups or have got jobs through their own contacts and efforts," he added. Earlier, IIT-Delhi had to re-conduct the second phase of its placement drive as several companies rescinded their offers. During the pandemic, the second phase of placements continued in an online mode, through which around 100 students bagged job offers. "Over 430 organisations had registered for the placement season in the academic year 2019-2020 offering more than 600 job profiles. As many as 55 companies breached the average salary mark for MDI this year, for instance, according to ET report. It picked out four graduates at the same compensation. India’s domestic salary packages also rose by 15%-20% last year. IIM-C students see a dramatic jump in salaries after an MBA

For IT giants wages, employee costs and campus placement drives make up for over half of its operational costs. ‘We will honour all offers made — freshers and lateral hires’ Infosys however said that it will onboard all the campus hires. With this, it joins the likes of Accenture, Tata Consultancy Sevices (TCS) and other tech giants who will honour all the job offers made in the last financial year. A large number of companies have rescinded campus job offers forcing even IITs to hold a second placement drive in late July and August. “We are yet to onboard only a small percentage of campus hires we made offers to so far,” said Pravin Rao, COO at Infosys. The technology multinational made 18,000 job offers the last financial year. It said it will also onboard the lateral hires. “We will honour all the commitments made to campus hires — freshers as well as lateral. As far as onboarding timelines are concerned, we have already hired a few lateral employees, while in lockdown,” he said during its Q4 earnings call. Employee count decreases by over 1,000 <div type="image" title="infy employees" msid="75253862" hostid="261"></div> There has been a decrease in the employee headcount — by over 1,000. The employee count at Infosys stood at 243,454 during the third quarter ending in December 2019 — higher than 242,371 as of March 2020. “We should not read into the fall in employee count, it is not a secular trend,” Rao said. He did not hint any furloughs or layoffs, given the Coronavirus chaos. Going forward, Rao said that the company is planning to make more than 35,000 offers in FY21. “In the near term, there will be a demand-supply mismatch because we were already geared for high volume in the first quarter. We have to ensure that the utilisation rates go up,” said Nilanjan Roy, CFO at Infosys. Remote assessment for nearly 6,000 trainees Infosys claims to have a strong digital footprint. The company said that all the 6,000 trainees will now continue their training remotely. “There are assessments, certifications and other online training to facilitate remote programmes,” Rao added. In fact, as much as 93% of the employees at Infosys are now working from home, thanks to the lockdown. The focus is on employee safety. “We will revisit as the situation evolves, keeping the safety of employees a priority. We will also take initiatives like temperature check etc,” the company said. The performance growth may be attributed to its international partnership for bilateral governmental research programmes. It has research collaborations with over 20 US universities across areas like cyber security. The university also has associations with European and Japanese institutions. “The Emerging Economies University Rankings 2020 suggests that real progress is being made by a number of institutions in a number of metrics across our robust methodology, and could mark an exciting turning point for Indian higher education, enabled in part by the Institutes of Eminence scheme,” said Phil Baty, chief knowledge officer, THE. In fact, the application, which had 2.8 million paid users as of December 2019, saw a 60% increase in new registrations in the first week. “Learning from home has gained utmost importance more than ever before due to temporary school closure. Students need a holistic and reliable solution that helps them continue learning from the comfort of their homes,” Mrinal added. Recently, the edtech platform also introduced live sessions for free, catering to students in 4th to 12th grades. The students can access the resources and select any topic and schedule a slot to learn it via Byju’s application. Students in classes 4-12 can learn math and science concepts on the platform. The United Nations curated a list of distance learning platforms for schools and teachers to reach learners remotely. Byju’s was the only Indian edtech company featured on the ‘Distance Learning Solutions’ list. Across the world, as many as 850 million students are suffering due to suspension of classes across 102 countries, as per UNESCO. ‘After making our content free to assist students earlier, we have now added free ‘Live Classes’ on our platform, where students can attend 3-4 regular sessions per week. Along with the existing content available on the app, live classes will bring a schedule to their learning and give them access to good teachers – something that they are missing especially now. According to the report, Indian engineers still lag the relevant digital skills that companies nowadays are looking to hire for. This includes advanced tech skills such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science and wireless technologies among others. Merely 2.5% of engineers in India possess skills in artificial intelligence while only a handful of engineers (5.5%) are qualified with basic programming, the report assessed. This means, overall, only <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/over-80-indian-engineers-are-unemployable-lack-new-age-technology-skills-report-1483222-2019-03-21">1.5% of engineers in India </a>have the required skills for new-age jobs. While 47% of students attend industry talks to boost their knowledge. "We find that a low proportion of engineers take up projects beyond curriculum and do internships. Also, there is a lack of faculty talking about industry application of concepts in class or students getting exposure through industry talks," Varun Aggarwal, Chief Technology Officer and co-founder Aspiring Minds told PTI. The report analysed engineers across India, China and the US.
