The top notch institutions such as IITs and IIMs lag behind institutes such as Harvard, <keyword id="54274" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="MIT">MIT</keyword>, Stanford, etc. 
 When we look at undergraduate programmes and compare US with India, there is a stark difference in teaching methodology, practical approach, brain storming, etc. Even though India is now stressing on <keyword id="94495" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Innovation">innovation</keyword> at college level and bringing out several initiatives, it will take a long time to reach the point where a Harvard of Stanford sits. 
 Anil K Gupta, Michael D. Dingman Chair in Strategy and Entrepreneurship, University of Maryland, had once stated institutions like MIT and Stanford, the technology power houses of the US, the undergraduate students that are coming out really don’t do any <keyword id="15509" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Research">research</keyword>. There could be a rare example of an undergraduate student who does any research. They are there to take classes and do projects; they are not there to do fundamental projects. 
 It is when you look at the graduate programs, PHD programmes and faculty research, that’s where there is a big difference between what happens at MIT, Stanford, Princeton, and Harvard versus what happens at <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIt">IIT</keyword>s and IIMs. As a research institution, IIT still has a long way to go.

5 reasons why MIT is better than IIT

Twenty-three-year old <keyword id="3315781" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shrikanth-Bolla">Shrikanth Bolla</keyword> has already achieved what most people of his age will take atleast years to achieve. That too, despite being blind. 
 He faced discrimination due to his disability early on in life. After he was born blind, his parents were advised by the villagers in Sitaramapuram in <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> to let him die. 
 
At school too, he was excluded from sports and pushed to sit in the last bench away from the whole class. That however did little to deter Shrikanth to excel in studies and topping in Class 10 Board exams in his cool. 
 
At the intermediate level, Shrikanth wanted to study science but he got a rude shock when the Andhra Pradesh Education Board refused to grant him permission, stating that Arts was the only stream the blind could opt for. 
 
Not one to give up, he filed a case and after a six-month long wait, the Board agreed to let him pursue Science. At the end of two years, Shrikanth topped Class 12, securing 98%. 
 
The discrimination refused to stop. Next up was<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IIT&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> IIT</a>. Shrikanth wanted to study engineering at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology but he was denied an admit card to the <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> entrance examination. 
 
That’s when Shrikanth decided, “If IIT doesn’t want me, I don’t want IIT either!” 
 He then proceed to apply to schools in the United States for an undergraduate programme and ended up securing admission in four colleges- <keyword id="54274" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="MIT">MIT</keyword>, Stanford, Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon. He eventually chose <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mit&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">MIT</a>, becoming the school’s first international blind student. 
 
After graduating from MIT, Srikanth felt the need to do something about the lack of opportunities for the disabled in India. Thus, he gave up lucrative corporate opportunities in America, he returned to India and started Samanvai, a non-profit organisation based in Hyderabad with the aim to provide ‘individualized, need-based and goal-oriented support services to students with multiple disabilities.’ Additionally, he also provided tutorial services to such students by promoting Braille literacy and a printing press/library. He ended up mentoring and nurturing over 3,000 students. 
 Shrikanth wasn’t done just yet. Then in 2012, he decided to take up the issue of employability of the disabled, and thus started <keyword id="3314961" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollant-Industries">Bollant Industries</keyword> Pvt. Ltd, which provides livelihood opportunities to the physically challenged. The company employs disabled and uneducated people to manufacture eco-friendly disposable packaging products. 
 
Today, Bollant employs over 150 disabled individuals and has five manufacturing units. Its annual sales have already crossed Rs. 70 million and the company is worth Rs 50 crore. 
 
Shrikanth is the living example of the fact that talent, hard work and determination can get you past any difficulties.

Rejected by IIT, this blind man went to MIT and is now a CEO of a 50 crore company

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore was ranked second in the University Rankings, globally for its research facilities. This makes IISc the first Indian institution to get nearly 100,000 citations in research papers in a span of five years. Last year, the institute was ranked sixth among the top performing Indian universities. “The Indian Higher Education system is making progress in some key areas. The sector requires more substantial, sustained and strategic investments both in research and education,” Ben Sowter, QS Research Director said. Four of the 23 prominent Indian institutions ranked, improved on the performance in the higher education sector. But seven IITs reported a drop in rank. India’s premier institution Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay moved up by ten spots to the 152th rank, according to <keyword id="2893769" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="QS-University-Rankings">QS University Rankings</keyword> 2020. IISc is now the world's second best research institute: QS University Rankings

The startup fever has now gripped faculty members of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) who are now, independently or collaboratively, coming up with their own ventures and turning entrepreneurs. 
 Faculty members of <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> from across India, including Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur and Hyderabad, are leading the trend. Nineteen startups were only from IIT Madras in 2014-15. 
 An Economic Times report quoted <keyword id="2914509" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravikrishnan-Elangovan">Ravikrishnan Elangovan</keyword> (33) who joined <keyword id="57604" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi">IIT Delhi</keyword>'s department of biochemical engineering and biotechnology as assistant professor in 2010 where he met Vivekanandan Perumal and Shalini Gupta, both of whom had also joined the institute as faculty members after their post-doctoral degrees from the US. The trio wanted to develop a solution for typhoid diagnosis, for which they put up a proposal with the department of biotechnology in 2013 and got funded. 
 
Faculty forming new companies is an integral part of the academia-entrepreneurship intersection in the US, especially in places like Stanford and MIT. But the trend is slowly gaining momentum here in India as well. 
 
As per the report published in the financial daily, IIT Madras has so far spawned 16 startups that have been founded or co-founded by its faculty members. Thirty of the 89 tech start-ups birthed at the institute have faculty members as founders or minority shareholders. 
 <keyword id="2914508" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras-Incubation-Cell">IIT Madras Incubation Cell</keyword> CEO Tamaswati Ghosh said, "We are witnessing an increasing trend of joint collaboration between faculty members and their current and graduated students, with research being translated into commercial ventures/companies." 
 
At IIT Kharagpur, the first such registration for a joint venture between a faculty member and a student happened way back in 2007, such instances have gained momentum recently. "For the past two to three years, we're getting registrations from three to four such companies each year," says PP Das, head of Rajendra Mishra School of Engineering Entrepreneurship at IIT Kharagpur. One more such company — in the Internet security business — is likely to get registered next month.

After US, faculty startups are now finding their feet in India

<ul><li>Queen’s University, UK is exploring India’s national entrance examinations as an eligibility criterion for admission. </li><li>The university recently included Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) scores as a parameter to assess Indian students for admission in engineering (Science and technology) programmes. </li><li>Nearly 200 Indian students have been studying in the UK, enrolled in various courses. </li><li>The varsity has partnered with several Indian institutions for outreach programmes, rolling out a five-year engagement plan to attract more Indian students.</li></ul>Queen’s University UK is <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/education-2/after-jee-uks-queens-university-to-explore-accepting-scores-of-more-indian-entrance-exams/1616235/">exploring</a> the inclusion of India’s national entrance examination as an eligibility criterion for admission to certain universities in the UK — as the “quality of education in India is good.” The university also recently announced that it will include Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) scores to assess Indian students for admission in engineering, science and technology programmes in the United Kingdom. According to the Vice Chancellor Ian Greer, it is considering the Indian entrance scores for courses beyond engineering <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/education/after-jee-uks-queens-university-to-explore-accepting-scores-of-more-indian-entrance-exams/articleshow/69913671.cms">PTI reported</a>. “Traditionally, UK universities rely on A levels but there have to be certain quality thresholds. The key issue is identifying the right quality because we want people who come here to succeed,” Greer told PTI. ‘Very good students’ As of now, nearly 200 Indian students are studying in the UK. Going further, the varsity partnered with several Indian institutions for outreach programmes, rolling out a five-year engagement plan to attract more Indian students. Those who clear India's Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) may get a shot at UK's Queen's University

In a world increasingly propelled by technology, university research makes for the foundation of any nation's economic growth. 
 In line with this, the much awaited Rs 100 crore Research Park at IIT-Bombay is all set to come up in the <keyword id="1003683" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Powai-Campus">Powai campus</keyword> this year. 
 
Even as the building will take another 2 years to complete, the good news is it will start functioning this year with a few firms who have already collaborated with the institute. 
 The research park aims to become a facilitator in bringing together <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword> and industry to expand R&amp;D collaboration and promote entrepreneurship. 
 
The new facility will enable IITB to become the nucleus of entrepreneurship in the Powai Valley, similar to the role played by Stanford University in the Silicon Valley and MIT in Route 128. 
 The facility will provide a diverse range of expertise in areas like energy, aviation, semiconductors, construction, IT and <keyword id="6354776" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom">Telecom</keyword>, automotive, chemical, industrial design, metals/material and Biotech/Pharma.

IIT-B's Research Park - The Innovation Hub that every IIT should have

<ul><li>Indian universities rank almost as high as global universities in the engineering and technology domain. </li><li>According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Delhi feature in the top 50 for the first time. </li><li>Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral &amp; mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical &amp; electronic engineering. </li><li>Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. </li></ul>Indian engineers are well known around the world. Now, its universities are being ranked high especially in the engineering and technology domain. According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, India’s premier engineering institutions — Bombay and Delhi campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) — have been ranked in the top 50 universities for the very first time. IIT Delhi ranked 44th while IIT Bombay crawled up nine spots to rank 47th in the global list. Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral and mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical and electronic engineering. "It is a significant achievement of our premiere engineering institutions, which has made India proud. This is the result of continuous efforts of our government to promote the environment of research and innovation in our educational institutions," Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' said. Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. "This is the result of the various measures we have taken in the institute on boosting the research ecosystem on the campus, strengthening our connect with the external stakeholders, significantly enhanced internationalization efforts from the institute and various other measures initiated in the last three years," IIT Delhi director V Ramgopal Rao told news agency PTI. This comes as good news to the Indian universities that were striving to make a mark, globally. Nearly 20 universities were ranked in the top 200 in the <a href="https://www.qs.com/rankings-revealed-qs-wur-asia-2020/">QS World University Rankings: Asia 2020</a> this year. However, the IITs — Bombay, Delhi and Madras campuses — did not make it to the top 30. The rankings suggest India’s strength in the natural sciences, life sciences, and in engineering disciplines, QS <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/education/india-improves-tally-in-top-100-qs-world-university-rankings-by-subject-120030401416_1.html">report said</a>. In Chemistry, 20 Indian universities have been ranked on the top, followed by computer science, physics, astronomy and biological sciences. The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has laid out a counselling plan for country’s most prestigious institutes — Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) — and other higher educational institutions, The Print <a href="https://theprint.in/india/education/professional-counsellors-iit-student-suicide-hrd-ministry/299898/">reported</a>. Each day, about six students commit suicide due to <a href="http://www.pondiuni.edu.in/smhic/objective.html">academic failure</a>. India has the highest student suicide rate with nearly 38,000 students committing suicide since 2015. The decision was taken during the IIT council meeting where the ministry directed the IITs to establish wellness centres, looping in professional counsellors. “Yes, the matter was discussed at the IIT council meeting and all the IITs have been asked to make sure that they have wellness centres and professional counsellors,” ministry officials told ThePrint. This decision comes after a student at <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/crime/story/iit-hyderabad-student-suicide-haunting-note-1560601-2019-07-02">IIT Hyderabad</a> committed suicide leaving behind a note saying ‘Sorry I turned out to be a waste.’ The student quoted academic pressure as the cause. Of the 23 IITs, Delhi, Mumbai and Madras campuses have wellness centres. The government now wants other institutions to have them as well. It is considering to associating with more than 300 counsellors, including private partners via online mechanism by next month. The ministry also asked the institutes to consult with faculty members to spot students under stress or any <keyword id="35697" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="mental-disorder">mental disorder</keyword>, so as to provide them counselling. On the similar lines, Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) — regulatory body of mental health professionals — formulated a team to tackle mental health issues of college-going students. It consists of three psychiatrists — Dr. Kersi Chavda, Dr. Avinash Desouza, and Dr. Amrit Pattojoshi. “India is a young country. We are all set to have a huge population between the age group of 16 and 25. They struggle with increasing competition, internet, mobile addiction, drug use, and a constant tussle between traditional and modern. India wants more IITs to have wellness centers to curb stress and depression

IIT or <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Institute+of+Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</a> is India’s premier technology institute (as if you don’t know). Word of mouth is back in the Valley (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Silicon+Valley">Silicon Valley</a>, San Francisco Bay), the world’s global tech capital, people utter ‘<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Institute+of+Technology">IIT</a>’ with the same reverence as ‘<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=MIT">MIT</a>’. 
 
Notable IIT alumni include <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Google">Google</a> CEO <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Sundar+Pichai">Sundar Pichai</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Infosys">Infosys</a> founder <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=N.R.+Narayan+Murthy">N.R. #1 Social Media hate for ‘wasting public money’ 
Scan social media, and you’ll find widespread hate and animosity because of the amount of money the government spends on educating IITians. They are supposedly a liability for the nation. 
 
Comments like ‘Our IITs have swallowed 1000 Crores each year for 60 years and haven’t done any net real value addition to 1.3 billion people’, or ‘Ask for tenders from private people globally to operate and manage all govt run academic institutions under license for 30 years (without selling any real assets) and let govt stop interfering.’ 
 
Is it reasonable to hand over the country’s brightest brains to money mongers? Shouldn’t quality education be available to all? 
 Internet tolls, if you haven’t cracked <keyword id="1629952" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="JEE-mains">JEE Mains</keyword> and Advanced, it means you haven’t worked hard enough. IITians can be anything, lucky isn’t one of them. 
 
#2 Bhai, tera package kitna hai? (Dude, what’s your package?) 
The idea is ‘IITians mostly settle abroad. Those who remain draw annual salaries of over Rs. 25 lakhs.’ 
 
Reality is 80% of IIT salaries remain below Rs. 12 lakhs p.a. It’s easy to file an RTI and find this out, but spreading social media hate is just easier. 
 
Also, if you’re cribbing they’re ‘taking away’ your job, people like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Infosys">Infosys</a> founder <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=N.R.+Narayan+Murthy">N.R. Narayan Murthy</a> and the Bansals of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Flipkart">Flipkart</a> are offering thousands of jobs. If you can’t land a job, you’re not good enough. 
 
Work hard, and by the way, get a life. 
 
#3 You must be Superman! 
Not every IITian wants to go to an IIM or join the IAS. 
 
The idea is that if you’re from IIT, you’re a master in everything. If your package is anything below Rs. 30 to 40 lakhs per annum, you spent your IIT days dating random girls, getting sloshed and smoking LSD. 
 
My idea is that IITs should feel like the Navy Seals training program. So much stress. They’re 18 year olds right out of school for god’s sake. They’re in college to study, not in a mission to kill <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Osama+bin+Laden">Osama bin Laden</a>! 
 
Bad parents, an IIT degree doesn’t come with a confirmed job offer from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Google">Google</a>. Also, don’t salivate over the prospect of 30% hike on dowry. 
 
That’s just sick…and a crime. 
 
Love on Campus? 
IITians are blessed with a 10:1 ratio of boys to girls. 
 
If you’re a man, you may not find many girls to chat or date. 
 
If you found love on campus…you deserve respect.

Chennai, May 12 () An automated respiratory assistdevice that will be useful in remote and rural areas whereventilator facilities are not available has been developedjointly by the TVS Group and IIT-Madras among others, thecity-based diversified conglomerate said on Tuesday.    The device, "Sundaram Ventago", would have "a greatimpact" post COVID19 as it can make respiratory support moreaffordable and available to all, a top group company officialsaid.    The device was developed by the TVS Group, the SundaramMedical Foundation and the Indian Institute of Technology,Madras with the aim of providing quality medical support at anaffordable cost particularly in remote and rural areas, therelease said.  It has been designed according to internationally acceptedmedical standards and in collaboration with the Madras MedicalCollege, Kauvery Hospital and with guidance from MIT-Boston.   The device provides respiratory support to patientsthrough a controlled and automated squeezing of a self-inflating bag and includes control of respiratory rate, tidalvolume, pressure parameters among others, the release said.    The first batch comprising 25 pieces of device wascurrently under production at TVS Group firm Brakes India atPadi here, it said adding user training and support will beprovided through a dedicated mobile application.  "TVS Group has leveraged its engineering talent and itsquality first approach to develop an affordable respiratoryassist device," Brakes India deputy managing director SriramViji said.  The Sundaram Ventago is a 'Make in India' product withlocal supply chain, based on proven technology, he said.   Kauvery Hospitals Executive Director S Aravindan said thecountry was importing more than 80 per cent of medicaldevices.  "Cost effective ventilators like this manufactured inIndia will significantly bring down the cost", he said. IIT Madras Electrical Engineering faculty Jayaraj Josephsaid, "we are glad to partner with TVS Group in the design ofthe Sundaram Ventago project".
