The research will be focused on driving indigenisation of the LGD manufacturing process. Presenting the Budget 2023-24 in the Parliament on Wednesday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, said: "The LGD is a technology and innovation-driven emerging sector with high employment potential." "These environment-friendly diamonds have optically and chemically the same properties as natural diamonds. To encourage indigenous production of LGD seeds and machines and to reduce import dependency, a research and development grant will be provided to one of the IITs for five years," the Finance Minister added. As per a recommendation made by the Department of Commerce, the research grant of Rs 242 crore over a period of five years to IIT-M has been approved, the statement said. "This is indeed the right time to set up a diamond factory in India, given that diamonds have thermal and electrical properties making them superior to contemporary technologies like silicon, silicon carbide and gallium nitride. IIT-Madras will work towards producing diamond wafers suitable for electronic applications," Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT-M, said. IIT Madras to get ₹242 crore for R&D on lab grown diamonds

Besides, the jewellery industry, LGD are used in computer chips, satellites and 5G networks as they can be used in extreme environments due to their potential to operate at higher speeds while using less power than silicon-based chips. The LGD has vast application in the field of defence, optics, jewellery, thermal and medical industry. As the government figures, exports of cut and polished (worked) LGD from India has been growing at fast clip. During FY21 the exports were $637.97 million and shot up to $1,348.24 million in FY22. This fiscal -- FY23 -- the exports of LGD between April-December stood at $1,387.33 million. It is proposed to establish an India Centre for lab grown diamond (InCent-LGD) at IIT-M with the estimated cost of Rs 242.96 crore over five years. The aim of this project is to provide, in mission mode, technical assistance to the industries, and entrepreneurs in the country, in promoting indigenous manufacturing of both chemical vapour deposition (CVD) and high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) systems along with the recipes for expanding the LGD business at the upstream end. Research efforts would make the technology available for start-ups at affordable cost, increase employment opportunities, increase exports of LGD, thus play a significant role in fuelling India's economic growth. According to the Indian government, the gems and jewellery sector plays a significant role in the Indian economy, contributing around nine per cent to India's total merchandise export. Over the past decade, there has been several positive developments in the gem and jewellery sector globally. One of the major technological developments in this sector has been the LGD. Though, India is one of the leading producers of LGD using CVD technology it has to depend on other countries for the supply of critical machinery components and 'seeds' -- which are the raw material for producing synthetic diamonds. It is, therefore, imperative that India develops its own, indigenous technology for producing the critical machinery component seeds to remove the import dependence that we have in the case of natural diamonds, the government said. Good quality LGD with qualified certification, produced from the developed equipment and process parameters will attract many foreign customers increasing the export volume of LGD and scalability of production. The documented process parameters and the developed recipe will encourage new entrepreneurs to enter the LGD business making it easier and cost-effective to set up the facility, start the business and generate employment. New Delhi, Dec 11 () Samsung India on Wednesday inaugurated a digital academy at IIT Guwahati as part of its efforts to train over 300 people on new-age technologies like Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence.
 "The Samsung Innovation Lab at IIT Guwahati will train students on Internet of Things (IoT), Embedded Systems, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, helping them learn industry-relevant skills and making them job-ready," a statement said.
 Through this partnership with IIT Guwahati, the academy targets to train over 300 students in the next three years on these cutting-edge technologies, it added.
 "At Samsung, our aim is to foster a culture of innovation amongst the students and provide them with the best possible infrastructure. We are confident that Samsung Innovation Lab, which is part of our citizenship initiatives, will help students leverage the growing digital technologies market and develop their talent," Samsung India Corporate Vice President Peter Rhee said.
 Such initiatives will help bridge the academia-industry gap and foster more collaborations that would be a win-win situation for both, IIT Guwahati Director T G Sitharam said.
 "The strong interest and support of the state government will go a long way in extending the expertise of IIT Guwahati and Samsung Innovation Lab to other parts of Assam. It would provide technical opportunities for academic excellence and development," Sitharam added.
 The course will be taught over 14 weeks through classroom lectures, assignments and lab room sessions, self-study and mini projects. Extensive tutorials and approach documents will also be provided to students to facilitate practical exercises.
 Samsung has so far set up five innovation labs in IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Roorkee as part of its Samsung Digital Academy programme. SR RVK

Samsung sets up innovation lab at IIT Guwahati

Encouraged by the industry demand and growth in the field of miniature, light weight, non-magnetic gear-free actuators, shape memory alloy (<keyword id="12038666" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sma" source="Orion">SMA</keyword>) based actuators have emerged with an excellent power-to-weight ratio as a suitable alternative to the conventional actuators. However, existing SMA actuators have limited scope in terms of higher force or torque output due to the relatively simple architecture of the actuation mechanism. To address this limitation, the team from <keyword id="5019091" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="smart-materials" source="Orion">Smart Materials</keyword>, Structures and Systems (SMSS) Lab at <keyword id="108320" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit-kanpur" source="Orion">IIT Kanpur</keyword> expanded the design space of the SMA actuator by leveraging the characteristics of bi-pennate muscle architecture with about 70 per cent enhanced muscle force output per unit weight. This will result in the creation of a new class of space robots which will , the team wrote in the paper published in <keyword id="3686694" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nature-scientific-reports" source="Orion">Nature Scientific Reports</keyword>. "This invention will not only result in the development of next-gen space robots and medical prostheses, but will also help aviation and some other industries. In a way, it will help make multiple sectors self-reliant and more advanced in the long run," said Prof. <keyword id="5413559" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="abhay-karandikar" source="Orion">Abhay Karandikar</keyword>, Director at IIT Kanpur in a statement. The primary goal of an actuator is to generate mechanical output, such as force and displacement, by transforming electrical energy. SMAs are a class of smart materials that can restore their shape after being exposed to high temperatures. The interesting property of the customisable multi-stage hierarchy of the SMA-based bio-inspired muscle design will also encourage researchers in the domain of bio-mechatronics to develop adaptive robotic prostheses for bio-medical application in the country. This will significantly reduce (one third of the current cost) the cost of bio-medical devices and increase the affordability of high performance systems like MRI scanner, CT scanner and surgical robots. The technology will also enable development of patient rooms with low maintenance and quieter operation. IIT Kanpur develops bio-inspired artificial muscle for space robots to boost Indian space technology

IIT students are choosing AI over computer science as job prospects change

Mumbai, May 28 () As part of its effort to fight the COVID pandemic, the IIT Alumni Council on Thursday announced the setting up of a mega lab in the metropolis with a capacity of 10 million tests per month by July. The council also said it will soon start identifying partners for the same through a global competition. Having launched the first 'Covid Test Bus' in the city earlier in the month, the council also said trials have already begun on two of the supercomputer clusters in the megapolis, which alone has seen more than 35,000 cases out of the close to 1.58 lakh in the country and nearly 2,000 of the over 4,700 deaths in the country so far. While vaccine is still more than a year away in the best case scenario, the testing capacity has emerged as the biggest challenge. So the focus of the lab is to ensure timely testing, therefore their focus is on detecting, preventing and treating the disease with timely as well as affordable testing. It can be noted that the council has also set up COVID-19 Taskforce under the chairmanship of K Vijay Raghavan, an IIT Kanpur alumnus and the principal scientific officer to the Centre, with 20 IIT directors as members, along with many other distinguished alumni of the institutes. "The IIT Alumni Council has decided to set up the largest genetic testing laboratory for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases after consulting global experts in the areas of virology, RT-PCR machine manufactures, test kits, pooling algorithms, AI, machine learning, robotics and microfluidics. "A dedicated team has already started work on designing the MegaLab Mumbai with a capacity of 10 million RT-PCR tests per month," said Ravi Sharma, president of the IIT Alumni Council. "The MegaLab will be based on the end-to-end Kodoy indigenous technology stack and will have adequate capacity for testing the entire population of Mumbai for infectious diseases, once a month," he added. The COVID-19 Taskforce, announced on March 25 itself - the day the first phase of the now-nine-weeks long national lockdown was announced, has various working groups involving over 1,000 dedicated alumni spread all over the world to finding/creating appropriate solutions to fight the pandemic. Apart from these, the council also set up digital Xray systems at the Poddar Hospital that uses AI to detect coronavirus for the first time in the country on April 23; on May 1, it also launched the country's first COVID Test Bus in the city and from May 10, they started the work on indigenising the test kits. The MegaLab Mumbai is the latest initiative of the IIT Alumni Council with an aim to design and establish the largest genetic testing laboratory for COVID-19 and other infectious diseases like tuberculosis with an end-to-end capacity to carry out over 10 million tests a month. It will comprise three independent lines -– 1 million tests per month, 3 million and 6 million tests per month. The MegaLab will be based on the end-to-end Kodoy indigenous technology stack, and for implementation, the Kodoy stack is divided in 64 steps from (collection of) virus in the throat to the virus being ultimately zapped/disinfected by UV at the completion of testing in a RT-PCR. The testing infrastructure will comprise the vehicle mounted automated sample collection stations in cars or cabs and Covid test buses, while the MegaLab will comprise robotic contactless sample transport from the vehicles to the testing line with robotic pooling followed by high speed RNA extraction using magnetic bead technology. IIT Alumni Council to set up mega lab in Mumbai to conduct 1-cr COVID-19 tests a month

Soon, five laboratories each in seven IITs will be at par with the best in the world, thanks to project 'Vishwajeet' that aims at catapulting 7 IITs to the top league of <keyword id="3119168" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-academic-rankings">global academic rankings</keyword>. 
 During a recent meeting of the <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> Directors, it was decided that five laboratories each at <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword>, Bombay, Madras, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee will get funding from government and industry, to make them at par with the world's best. 
 
It was also discussed that the 1:10 teacher-student ratio is desirable from the current 1:15. The HRD ministry has instructed IITs to hire faculty, foreign talent too. In this regard, the HRD ministry had put forward a proposal to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Home Ministry recently to ensure the norms related to allowing foreign faculty are made easier. 
 
At the meeting, IIT directors spoke on expansion of student strength to one lakh in IITs. They said the bulk of expansion will take place in post-graduate and Ph.D. Even foreign students will be taken. The reason to induct foreign students is because it is one of the criterion to make way into global university rankings. 
 
In the meeting there was also a clear division on the issue of breaking into top 100 ranking done by foreign agencies. Many directors felt that IITs should rather concentrate on improving themselves and expand the number of courses being taught including humanities.

The incidence of hackers trying to breach the firewalls of the healthcare industry have only increased during the coronavirus pandemic.To be fair, the Indian healthcare industry isn’t particularly careful about connecting to the internet. For instance, in June, the CEO of Hackrew and IIT Guwahati graduate <a href="https://medium.com/bugbountywriteup/how-screwed-is-indian-healthcare-data-fa4584be8a04">Sai Krishna Kothapalli</a> was able to view, edit and delete classified personal information of lakhs of patients all over India. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has topped the charts for the second consecutive year. The institute has been boosting its technical expertise with its advanced research labs. The <a href="https://twitter.com/iitmadras/status/1254617088955609093?s=20"> researchers at the institute</a> have been actively developing solutions like N-95 masks, face shields and interactive voice response systems to tackle the global pandemic. In terms of the top performers, the rankings have shown similar trends as last year. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IIT Delhi have secured the second and third position, the Union Cabinet Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal announced today. Miranda House, Lady Shri Ram College (LSR) and Hindu College are the top performers under the country’s premier government university — University of Delhi. The Indian government has been releasing the national rankings since 2016. The centre’s rankings are based on several parameters including teaching, research and professional practices, learning and resources, graduation outcome, outreach and inclusivity, and perception. The annual ranking is also comparative to the global university rankings by the Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) — featuring Indian IITs and IISc in the top ranking institutions access the globe. However, Indian universities are yet to make a mark on a global scale — the rankings have declined in the past. However, Pokhriyal said that he does not agree with the THE and QS rankings of Indian institutions. The low ranking is based on one of the parameters — perception, he said.

According to the programme '1Lab-1School', IIT-Madras isconnecting top graduate laboratories to high schools of ruralTamil Nadu, a press release said.    The initiative is fully funded by Verizon India as part ofits commitment to empower rural communities.    The '1Lab-1School', in its second year, has covered over800 students of 20 schools from Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram andVellore districts.    "1Lab-1School programme stands apart for its potential totransform science education in India in the long run," VerizonIndia MD Kalyani Sekar said.    "We are confident that the progamme makes quality scienceand technology education accessible for hundreds ofchildren," she said.    Under the initiative, mentor groups from IIT-MadrasResearch Labs comprising students of MS, MTech and Ph.D andfaculty from science and engineering department would adoptrural government higher secondary schools.    "A total of 20 research lab of IIT Madras has beenconnected to 20 rural schools since June 2018 with over 150graduate students from the institute having trained over 800students in the ninth grade," IIT Madras project lead andassociate professor, department of applied mechanics, PijushGhosh said.    "We would like the higher education community to take upsuch models and implement them in schools in their regions sothat together we can contribute towards the betterment andfuture of children in rural India," he said. With the government opening up the space sector for private investments, Chennai-based rocket making start-up <keyword id="7122982" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="agnikul-cosmos">Agnikul Cosmos</keyword> Private Ltd is expecting to have its rocket ready by 2022, said a top company official. "We have realised the engine for the upper stage or third stage and work is on for the first and second stage engines of the rocket. We hope to have the engines in seven months' time. Depending on how the Covid-19 lockdown progresses, we expect the rocket to be ready by later part of 2022," Co-founder and CEO Srinath Ravichandran told IANS. Agnikul, he said, is developing a three-stage (three engine) rocket, powered by kerosene or semi-cryogenic fuel with a carrying capacity of 100 kg to low earth orbit. The rocket height will be 18 metres and it would weigh about 13 ton at liftoff. According to Ravichandran, the company will buy commercially-available navigation systems and modify them to its needs. The company, which has 50 employees, is currently working out of the National Centre for Combustion Research and Development located at Indian Institute of Technology-Madras. Ravichandran said that Agnikul has raised about Rs 26 crore till date from various investors and the promoters have also put in their own funds. Agreeing that the money in rocket launch services is very low compared to that in satellite application service and ground equipment, Ravichandran said: "The estimated market for small satellite launches is about $ 2-2.5 million per year. This market will grow when there are rockets available for putting into orbit small satellites." Presently, small satellites are carried as piggyback luggage by bigger rockets. Thus, the waiting time for small satellite makers to put their satellites into orbit is very long. "But if there are rockets available to launch small satellites, then the market for such satellites and also for small rockets will increase," Ravichandran said. While small rocket players may face competition from agencies having bigger rockets in terms of pricing, Ravichandran said the satellite players will have to look at the opportunity cost of waiting for the space in a bigger rocket whereas it may be not be so with players like Agnikul. Currently the US-based Rocket Lab is the only player in the segment that Agnikul is targeting. "By 2022, more number of such small rockets are expected to come into the satellite launch vehicle market," Ravichandran said. As regards the rocket ports, Agnikul will be looking at using the existing rocket port at Sriharikota belonging to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) or the one that is coming up at Kulasekarapattinam in Tamil Nadu. Happy at the Indian government's decision to open up the space sector for private players Ravichandran said the proposed Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) should have technical experts so that valid proposals are taken forward as well as marketing people who understand business. According to the Indian government, IN-SPACe will provide a level playing field for private companies to use Indian space infrastructure.

Indian start-up is building a three-stage rocket that could be ready to launch by 2022

New Delhi, May 13 () Agritech start-up Intello Labs, which provides quality certification for perishable farm products using digital tools, on Wednesday said it has raised USD 5.9 million (about Rs 45 crore) from investors including Saama Capital for new technology and future growth. The Gurugram-based company had earlier raised Rs 20 crore. The series A funding round was led by Saama Capital, alongside global agritech funds GROW (Singapore) and SVG Ventures THRIVE (USA). Existing investors Omnivore and Nexus Venture Partners also participated in this round, Intello Labs said in a statement. When contacted, Intello Labs co-founder and CEO Milan Sharma said the funds will be utilised mainly for new technology and expansion. "This funding will help us accelerate growth in international markets, specifically the USA and across Asia Pacific. There has been a significant spike in interest from these markets over the past few months, which was further accelerated by COVID-19, and now we have the firepower to go after these opportunities," he said. He declined to share the revenue figure of the company, but said it is growing at a rapid pace. "Through use of digital technologies, we assess the quality of fruits and vegetables, bringing transparency and standardisation in fresh produce ," Sharma said. Besides sorting and grading of fresh produce, technology helps in checking intrinsic parameters like pesticides residue and moisture. The technology is being used by corporates engaged in food business, like Reliance Fresh, and they pay a monthly subscription, Sharma said. The company aims to become the de facto quality platform across fruit and vegetable value chains for trading, procurement, grading, pricing, traceability, and marketing, the statement said. Intello Labs was founded in 2016 by Milan Sharma, Nishant Mishra, Himani Shah and Devendra Chandani. The first three co-founders studied together at IIT Bombay, while Devendra is a postgraduate from MDI Gurgaon. Intello Labs' clients include fresh produce growers, packers, aggregators, exporters, processors, foodservice, and retailers. Its clients include Reliance Fresh, Dole, Ocean Spray, and many of the leading e-grocery companies in China and Southeast Asia.
