<ul><li><keyword id="55119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IITs) had 2,400 dropout cases in the last two years. </li><li>A majority of them were at the postgraduate or PhD level. </li><li>Almost half (50%) of the dropouts were from Delhi and Kharagpur campuses. </li><li>IITs enroll nearly 17,000 students in its undergraduate and postgraduate courses every year.</li></ul>As many as 2,461 students dropped out of <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/education/over-2-400-dropout-from-iits-since-2017-47-6-are-sc-st-obc-2076985">Indian Institute of Technology (IITs)</a> in the last two years. And, a majority of them were pursuing either postgraduate courses or doctoral programmes. “The reasons may be attributed to shifting to other colleges, personal reasons, medical reasons, placement during PG courses and pursuing higher education abroad,” Union minister <keyword id="60487" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramesh-Pokhriyal">Ramesh Pokhriyal</keyword> Nishank told the Rajya Sabha during a recent session in the Parliament. Every year, the IITs enroll 17,000 students across undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Bad health, bad grades The undergraduates are dropping out due to poor academic performance and medical reasons. Almost half of the students, 1,400 of them, who quit are from <keyword id="6354859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIt">IIT</keyword>’s Delhi and Kharagpur campuses. Masters students however could be quitting as they are being offered jobs at state-owned firms, especially in Delhi. “On some occasions, we saw 60 students drop out from an M.Tech batch of 80. Over 2,400 students dropped out of India’s most prestigious IITs  in last two years

Several times <keyword id="954337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="critical-patients">critical patients</keyword> lose their lives while on their way to hospitals. Every second in the ambulance ferrying them to the hospital is crucial in saving a life. Unfortunately, even as me make technological advancements, there is no such technology at present that can help doctors at the hospital to continuously monitor the condition of the patient when the latter is on the move. Currently in such situations apart from family members, a medical technician accompanies a critical patient in an ambulance. But this technician has limited knowledge. Understanding the seriousness of the critical moments of a patient's life, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur has come up with a wireless technology for remote monitoring of patients' condition while they are being ferried in ambulances. Christened 'AmbuSens', the technology has been developed in the SWAN lab of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) of the institute. AmbuSens is capable of wireless monitoring of various physiological parameters like ECG, heart-rate, temperature and blood-pressure. It can be fitted in an ambulance to ensure remote monitoring of patient condition by the doctors even before they reach the hospital. The system preserves patient's data confidentiality while simultaneously using the analytic and computing power of cloud computing. The web interface of the AmbuSens system provides an easy-to-use graphical interface for doctors and paramedics alike with data visualisation tools such as real-time ECG graph rendering, and can be accessed from internet-enabled laptops, tablets and smartphones. "This technology will be a boon for the referral patients who are transported from a hospital in remote area to a city hospital," said <keyword id="2575349" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sudip-Misra">Sudip Misra</keyword>, a professor at department of CSE, <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> Kharagpur. He is also the principal investigator for developing this system. "Now with the doctors being able to monitor the patients on transit they can suggest medical interventions to the technician. This can be lifesaving," he added. The embedded system of AmbuSens includes both hardware and software. The referred hospital and the referee hospital as well as the ambulance will have laptops or tablets with internet connection. The patient will be fitted with wireless body sensors, which will help doctors of both referred and referee hospitals to continuously monitor the health condition of the patients in real-time. The technology can be life saving for accident victims or cardiac patients who need to be transported to the hospital immediately. The team behind the concepy has conducted successful field trials of the developed system at <keyword id="6365231" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="All-India-Institute-of-Medical-Sciences">All India institute of Medical Sciences</keyword> (<keyword id="40458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIIMS">AIIMS</keyword>), Bhubaneswar and BC Roy technological hospital (BCRTH), IIT Kharagpur.

IIT's life-saving innovation: Now, doctors in the hospital can monitor health while patient is being ferried in ambulance

IITs are known around the world for being one of the best engineering colleges. However, one of them will soon be recognized as the best medical college as well. 
 
After HRD ministry nod, IIT-Kharagpur is now the first among IITs to offer medicine courses to students soon. Interestingly, IIT-Kharagpur was also the first IIT to have a management school. The <keyword id="2872909" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vinod-Gupta-School-of-Management">Vinod Gupta School of Management</keyword> was started in 1993 and is often ranked among the top 20 <keyword id="112381" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="business-schools">business schools</keyword> in the country. 
 
You may think why are IITs venturing into the medical domain. The idea, as per the institute, is to be a research hospital where technological developments can take place, and local patients can benefit from them. 
 Plan is to kick-start the new course by 2019 with a batch of 50 students. However, a 400-bed hospital to be set up on the campus which will act as a teaching facility, will start admitting patients from mid-2018 itself. The super-speciality hospital will include departments, such as cardiology, neurology, orthopedic, out-patient, besides a medical diagnostic centre and an emergency ward. The permission from the <keyword id="49468" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Medical-Council-of-India">Medical Council of India</keyword> will come only after this hospital starts operating. 
 
As per sources, several hospitals of repute have been approached to manage IIT-K hospital's operations. Associated doctors will have an opportunity to carry out medico-technical research. "We aim to introduce videography during treatment, with the patient's permission. This will allow us to gather information, which can be transmitted anywhere across the globe to other doctors, who can then go through the treatment procedure and records to make recommendations," said the institute deputy director. 
 Chances are medical aspirants won't have to appear for <keyword id="6361994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET">NEET</keyword>, as IIT-K plans to have a separate entrance examination. Notably, IITs are governed by a separate law, which enables them to hold their own admission exams, like for engineering courses.

IIT-Kharagpur outperformed 276 institutes from across the country and maximum awards it won were of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=medical">medical</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=biotech">biotech</a> innovations. The appreciations were in engineering category. 
 
"After four rounds of evaluation, 19 teams have been selected for innovation awards and 24 for appreciation. Of the 19 awards, 15 awardees in Medical and Biotech innovations category will get Department of Biotechnology sponsored (BITAC-SRISTI) grant of Rs 15 lakh each to further their prototypes," an IIT release said. 
 
GYTI 2016 was a pan-India competition with over 2,363 innovation entries in 50 technology domains from 276 institutes from 26 states and two Union Territories.

IIT-Kharagpur shows how to innovate, bags maximum laurels at innovation awards

This 21-year-old from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IIT+Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</a> will soon earn over a crore per year at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Microsoft">Microsoft</a> in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Silicon+Valley">Silicon Valley</a>. <keyword id="3234216" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Vatsalya-Singh-Chauhan">Vatsalya Singh Chauhan</keyword> is from a small village in Bihar, and his father is a welder. 
 
"I was offered Rs. 1.02 crore per annum salary package by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Microsoft">Microsoft</a> and I will be joining in October this year," he told PTI. 
 
Vatsalya's father, Chandra Kant Singh Chauhan said, "My 20-year-long dedication has yielded results and my dream has come true. My son is now going abroad and I want him to make India proud abroad." 
 
Chandra Kant has five other children. He has now sent one of his daughters to Kota to prepare for the medical entrance exam.

8 Indian universities feature in THE Asia Rankings top 100 list — and it's not just IITs

There was a time when we had to walk up to a bank every time our work involved bank services, until ATMs came into being and changed our lives forever. It is exactly this revolution this <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> trio is trying to bring about in the healthcare sector with their <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2h5DHKxFo4">health ATMs</a>. 
 
Their products are basically kiosks that can provide basic and primary healthcare services without a person having to go to the clinic. 
 <keyword id="3757153" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="dhilly-babu">Dhilly Babu</keyword> and <keyword id="3757151" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="shreyans-gandhi">Shreyans Gandhi</keyword>, who graduated from <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword>, and Arpit Mishra, a graduate from IIT Kharagpur, came up the idea to cater to patients in remote areas where people have little or no access to doctors or healthcare facilities. They soon started their company <keyword id="3757152" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="yolo-health">Yolo Health</keyword> (Yolo means You Live Only Once) and installed their kiosks in different areas of the country, including two in Mumbai and one in Thane. 
 
From delivering basic diagnosis to connecting patients to doctors, this kiosk has proved to be an efficient means of healthcare diagnosis and delivery so far. 
 
The Health ATMs are equipped with tool and sensors to perform basic diagnosis such as check blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and fat and muscle percentage, perform various blood and urine tests, as well as cardiac and respiratory check-ups. It has proven to be efficient because reports are generated instantly. 
 
For any patient requiring further diagnosis, they are connected to a doctor through video-conferencing. If you are thinking, how will a person guide himself through the diagnoses, you are not alone at these kiosks. There's always a full-time attendant, who could be a community worker or a para-medic who will assist you. While the general health check-up is provided free of cost, more advanced tests could be charged for. 
 
Another big problem the IIT trio has solved is that their product doesn't require too much electricity to run. In fact, a single Uninterrupted Power Supply unit can run one kiosk easily. 
 
Every day, the founders claim, around 40-50 patients are visiting the kiosks. 
 
Furthermore, to expand beyond the 18 kiosks set up so far, the founders have joined hands with corporate firms and state governments to get funding and infrastructure. They are also tieing up with local hospitals, whose doctors will remain available for telemedicine and authenticating the diagnostic reports.

These 'Health ATMs' invented by 3 IITians are slowly taking over the traditional clinic-based model of treating Indian patients

<keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> has announced that it has partnered with <keyword id="108320" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="IIT-Kanpur">IIT Kanpur</keyword> under its ‘Cashless Campus’ initiative to bring cashless payment solution to the institute, the company said in a statement. 
 
Its QR Code-based cashless payment solution, Paytm claimed, has been enabled across various offline touch-points within the IIT Kanpur campus including the Hostel Canteens, Medical Store, Tea Stalls, Book Stalls and Cycle Repairing shops among others. 
 
The move is to help students and teachers make quick and easy payments without the worries of carrying loose change. 
 Kiran Vasireddy, Senior Vice President – Paytm said, “Our ‘Cashless Campus’ initiative has proven to be a great success with the country’s youth. This is a clear reflection of the younger generation’s eagerness to choose digital payments over the hassles of cash. <ul><li>In a first, two <keyword id="6355470" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="law">law</keyword> schools from India — Jindal Global Law School and <keyword id="6573571" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-law-school">National Law School</keyword> Bangalore — have been featured in the top 200 of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for Law. </li><li>Of the 12,000 law schools across the globe, these are the only two Indian law schools to make it to the global university rankings. </li><li>Globally, Harvard University tops the ranking followed by Yale University and Stanford University. </li></ul>Not just engineering and medical sciences, Indian <keyword id="1676488" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="law-universities">law universities</keyword> are also shining bright in the global rankings. In a first, two law schools from India — Jindal Global Law School and National Law School Bangalore — were featured in the <a href="https://www.livelaw.in/news-updates/jgls-ranked-top-law-school-in-india-among-top-100-150-on-global-scale-read-press-release-153465">top 200</a> of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings for Law. “This is the result of continuous efforts of our government to promote the environment of research and innovation in our educational institutions,” said Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal. Of the 12,000 law schools across the globe, these are the only two Indian law schools to make it to the global university rankings. OP Jindal Global University’s law school has been ranked in the 101-150 bracket in the list while National Law School has been ranked in top 150-200 universities. Only 300 law institutions were ranked this year. “It is an extraordinary and unprecedented ‘institutional moment’ for JGU to witness history as its first school is ranked number one in India and 101-150 in the world. All the schools of JGU are on this pathway to achieve global recognition and institutional eminence,” Raj Kumar, founding vice chancellor, JGU <a href="https://www.livelaw.in/news-updates/jgls-ranked-top-law-school-in-india-among-top-100-150-on-global-scale-read-press-release-153465">said</a>. QS Subject Ranking in Law measures the global relevance of institutions specifically in the area of research in law along with reputation from the academic sphere and employers. Globally, Harvard University tops the ranking followed by Yale University and Stanford University. Other top institutions in India — Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), University of Delhi (DU) and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) — also improved their ranking on the global scale. This is because of their research quality, academic reputation, accomplishments and graduate placements. JNU moved up two spots to rank 162th among the top 500 universities while the Delhi University and AIIMS were ranked at 231st in the humanities and medicine fields, respectively. In the engineering and technology domain, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes Indian Institutes of Technology, Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur.
