As against the two-year M.Tech program at IITs, the premier institutes are planning to execute M.Tech course for working professionals. 
 
A number of IITs are unable to retain their MTech students as they quit the course after landing jobs in public sector undertakings. In this regard, the M Tech programme could have more students complete their Masters. 
 
The move can help promote research work and increase revenue of IITs. IIT directors were seen discussing issues related to introducing executive MTech at the 155th meeting of IIT directors hosted by IIT-Kanpur last year in December. 
 
They feel there is no harm having sponsored MTechs by industry and the course could be charged for the actual cost. 
 
Curently, a number of IIMs and other B-schools already offer executive MBA programme for working professionals, but IIT's M.Tech course is the most cost-effective. Here's what the current M.Tech courses are offering. 
 
Compressed into a one-year programme, the executive M.Tech programme at IITs will be charged as per market rates. 
 
The final decision, however, is awaited. 
 
IIT directors of Bombay, Hyderabad and Roorkee are working out the details of this project. Once they reach a conclusion, the proposal will be sent to the IIT council, chaired by the HRD minister, for final approval.

A New Executive Course for Working Professionals may soon find a place in IITs

<ul><li>India’s <keyword id="6386485" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-human-resource-development">Ministry of Human Resource Development</keyword> (MHRD) has instituted a panel to assess the viability of reducing the government’s control over all 23 IITs.</li><li>The move is part of the government’s larger plan to reform the higher education sector and increase the global rankings of these institutions. </li><li>Earlier this year, 20 Indian Institutes of Management (<keyword id="19478" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM">IIM</keyword>) were granted more independence in choosing board members and making decisions related to course selection and hiring. </li></ul>Last week, India’s Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) formally instituted a panel to assess the viability of reducing the government’s control over all 23 <keyword id="6386086" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Technology">Indian Institutes of Technology</keyword> (IIT), according to a <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/panel-to-study-feasibility-of-iit-autonomy-5415187/">report</a> in the Indian Express. The seven-man committee is led by M Anandkrishnan, the former chairman of IIT-Kanpur, and comprises the directors of 5 top IITs - Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur and Kharagpur. The move is part of the government’s larger plan to reform the higher education sector and increase the global rankings of these institutions. It will have significant implications for the operation of IITs, which are currently regulated by the government’s IIT Council. The state-backed engineering institutes are globally renowned and routinely feature in lists of India’s best colleges. Earlier this month, QS released <a href="https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/rankings-by-location/india/2019">its rankings </a>for India’s top universities in 2019. IIT-Bombay came first in the nation, while five other IITs rounded up the top 10 spots. The panel will primarily focus on changes to the IIT Act. This will likely involve amendments to the selection process for the governing boards of IITs. Each IIT comprises a nine-member Board of Governors, all of whom are appointed by the central government. It could also involve the devolution of more powers to governing boards. For example, they could be allowed a greater say in amending the fundamental rules that relate to the day-to-day operations of IITs. The possibility of giving greater autonomy to state-backed institutes has precedence. In August 2018, the possibility of giving both IIT-Bombay and IIT-Delhi greater autonomy <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/hiring-courses-fees-delhi-mumbai-iits-set-to-get-freedom-to-decide-on-these-5309095/">was mooted</a> after the institutes were granted an “Institute of Eminence” designation. The designation grants institutes the power to decide on curriculum and fee structures. Furthermore, earlier this year, 20 Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) — the graduate business equivalent of IITs - were granted <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/education/autonomy-on-the-way-as-iim-rules-finalised/articleshow/65380632.cms">more independence</a>. Under the amendments to the IIM Act, the 15-member governing board of these institutes will now comprise <a href="http://mhrd.gov.in/sites/upload_files/mhrd/files/IIMBill2017English.pdf">five alumni</a> and they will also be allowed to appoint their own chairmen. This will translate into the ability to select courses and hire faculty with greater ease. This could be the case for IITs as well. A reduction in the number of government appointees could bring about a diversity in opinion, not to mention less politically-motivated decision-making. Before submitting its report, the seven-member IIT panel will reportedly seek feedback from the heads of IIMs to assess the pros and cons of being given greater decision-making power. The panel is expected to submit its final recommendations to the MHRD by the end of the year.

(Engineering) or other degrees that are equivalent to them in the branch relevant to the course they are applying for. For eligibility, the candidates must have scored more than 60% marks in their UG course. In addition, the admission to the M.Tech and M.Tech – Ph.D. courses will be based on the candidates’ score in the GATE examination. Those candidates who have got graduated from a relevant UG stream scoring over 55% marks can apply to the IIT, Bombay for joining the M.Sc. and M.Sc. – Ph.D. courses. Further to this, the admission to these courses will also be based on the performance of the candidates in the IIT JAM examination. For applying for the M.Des. course, the candidates must have graduated from a UG course in any one of the disciplines including Engineering, Architecture, Design or Interior Design or other equivalent programs that run for four years after completing the 10+2 examinations. Admission to the M.Des. course will be based on the score the candidate has got in the CEED examination. How To Take Admission In IIT Bombay

The Indian Institute of Technology, <keyword id="6357478" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kanpur" source="Orion">Kanpur</keyword>, has developed a course on drone technology that would be taught at IITs, other technical institutes and skill development centres in the country. The course has been designed on the directives of the Union ministry of electronics and information technology. The ministry sees drone technology from the perspective of the future and believes the move would help in quality supply of specialists in this field. "This is why the ministry has undertaken this task of taking drone technology to students at the macro-level," said a faculty member. The duo has developed a two-year degree course in which theory and practical would be of equal importance. The course also includes new technologies in making drones. IIT students are choosing AI over computer science as job prospects change

And, a majority of them were pursuing either postgraduate courses or doctoral programmes. “The reasons may be attributed to shifting to other colleges, personal reasons, medical reasons, placement during PG courses and pursuing higher education abroad,” Union minister <keyword id="60487" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ramesh-Pokhriyal">Ramesh Pokhriyal</keyword> Nishank told the Rajya Sabha during a recent session in the Parliament. Every year, the IITs enroll 17,000 students across undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Bad health, bad grades The undergraduates are dropping out due to poor academic performance and medical reasons. Almost half of the students, 1,400 of them, who quit are from <keyword id="6354859" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIt">IIT</keyword>’s Delhi and Kharagpur campuses. Masters students however could be quitting as they are being offered jobs at state-owned firms, especially in Delhi. “On some occasions, we saw 60 students drop out from an M.Tech batch of 80. Over 2,400 students dropped out of India’s most prestigious IITs  in last two years

IITs are known around the world for being one of the best engineering colleges. However, one of them will soon be recognized as the best medical college as well. 
 
After HRD ministry nod, IIT-Kharagpur is now the first among IITs to offer medicine courses to students soon. Interestingly, IIT-Kharagpur was also the first IIT to have a management school. The <keyword id="2872909" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vinod-Gupta-School-of-Management">Vinod Gupta School of Management</keyword> was started in 1993 and is often ranked among the top 20 <keyword id="112381" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="business-schools">business schools</keyword> in the country. 
 
You may think why are IITs venturing into the medical domain. The idea, as per the institute, is to be a research hospital where technological developments can take place, and local patients can benefit from them. 
 Plan is to kick-start the new course by 2019 with a batch of 50 students. However, a 400-bed hospital to be set up on the campus which will act as a teaching facility, will start admitting patients from mid-2018 itself. The super-speciality hospital will include departments, such as cardiology, neurology, orthopedic, out-patient, besides a medical diagnostic centre and an emergency ward. The permission from the <keyword id="49468" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Medical-Council-of-India">Medical Council of India</keyword> will come only after this hospital starts operating. 
 
As per sources, several hospitals of repute have been approached to manage IIT-K hospital's operations. Associated doctors will have an opportunity to carry out medico-technical research. "We aim to introduce videography during treatment, with the patient's permission. This will allow us to gather information, which can be transmitted anywhere across the globe to other doctors, who can then go through the treatment procedure and records to make recommendations," said the institute deputy director. 
 Chances are medical aspirants won't have to appear for <keyword id="6361994" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="NEET">NEET</keyword>, as IIT-K plans to have a separate entrance examination. Notably, IITs are governed by a separate law, which enables them to hold their own admission exams, like for engineering courses.

All the IITs filled their vacant undergraduate seats across 23 campuses

It has asked the 23 Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) to plan a course of action to improve them. The international ranking of IITs slipped further this year. Indian government demands an action plan from IITs to improve global rankings

Students of IIT, Kharagpur will now be able to study abroad, as a part of the 'Semester Away Programme'. 
 
After the completion of this programme, students will be able to opt for a semester or two at any foreign or Indian university before they complete their course. The course fee for the SAP will have to be arranged by the students. 
 
PK Das, dean of IIT-Kharagpur's post-graduate programme said, "A student will be able to choose an institution in India or abroad and a course offered by them. They will choose the course, take the approval of the faculty and apply." 
 
"The university does not necessarily have to be one we have an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with. If chosen, the students will be able to go there for one or a maximum of two semesters," he added. 
 
Criterion - At the UG level, a student would have to complete four semesters with a CGPA of more than 7 (with no backlog) in order to be eligible provided there are no disciplinary action pending against him/her. A PG candidate will have to complete two semesters (4 semesters for MMST students) with a CGPA more than 7(with no backlog) and no pending disciplinary action. 
 
On successful completion of the programme, students will stand the chance of getting their credits at IIT-KGP waived against the credits earned through SAP. It will depend on the courses they opt for. However, if a student chooses a course for which he cannot get his credits waived, he will be allowed to complete the pending semesters at IIT-KGP within an additional six months. 
 Application deadline for the <keyword id="4271906" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="autumn-semester">autumn semester</keyword> is March 31 and for the spring semester July 31.

Now, IIT Kharagpur students will get to study in world's best colleges for a semester

The course will be available online from 29 July. Launched by the Indian government, Swayam provides open online courses with teaching and learning resources to its citizens. “ISRO will go ‘back to the moon’ today. Learn Aerospace Engineering with Swayam, who knows, if you are a part of the journey the next time,” the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry said in a tweet.

 The portal will have six courses that provide knowledge on designing, manufacturing and maintenance of spacecraft, aircraft, missiles in aerospace engineering. Indian <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> will also offer several courses to enhance the learning in the domain. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur will conduct a three month long ‘Aircraft stability and control’ course and ‘Design of fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicles’ course for two months, under the initiative. It will also conduct ‘Introduction to rocket propulsion’ course for three months. In the aerospace domain, IIT Bombay will also launch a three month long course on ‘Introduction to aerospace engineering/flight’ imparting the basics of aerospace engineering. ‘Vibration and structural dynamics’ course will be conducted by IIT Kharagpur. The demand for Aerospace engineers has been on the rise, globally. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the sector will create jobs at a rate of 6% by 2026. Indian government launches online aerospace engineering course for those who aspire to reach the moon

This comes as the Higher Education Department of J&amp;K signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to boost employability in the region. The unemployment rate in Jammu &amp; Kashmir is significantly higher after the blockade and internet shutdown since August.
