Teams from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BITS+Pilani&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">BITS Pilani</a>, <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword> and <keyword id="3335295" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="IIT-Varanasi">IIT Varanasi</keyword> were the winners at the 2nd edition of '<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson</a> Innovation Awards India' held at the IIT Delhi on Friday. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson India</a> offered the three winning teams financial support of Rs 13 lakhs each towards incubating them. 
 
The projects were submitted by students in areas such as web design, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cloud+computing&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">cloud computing</a>, storage and networking, human-machine interface, embedded and hardware system design, MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output), machine-to-machine/<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Internet+of+Things&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Internet of Things</a>, software-defined networking, open source, signal processing, graphics and visualization, as well as research. 
 
Each shortlisted proposal was given an incentive by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson</a> to complete the initial prototype within two months. The winning projects were selected by the Jury in front of an audience comprising of students, faculty, innovators and industry leaders. 
 
Here are the ideas that took the cake: 
 
<keyword id="6442381" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BITS-Pilani">BITS Pilani</keyword>: This project was about using GAIT for human recognition. Its an alternative way to the currently established system based on face, fingerprint and iris and the students claim it can’t be spoofed or hacked. 
 
IIT Bombay: These students developed Li-Fi beacons. The product is basically a simple LED light source which can be connected to a receiver that can transmit dta in real time at a couple of GB/sec. 
 
IIT Varanasi: The IIT Varanasi team is working on a smart helmet which can be integrated with a two wheeler which - will keeps both the driver as well as the vehicle safe and secure by making it mandatory for the driver to put on the helmet and have a permissible alcohol breath level so as to be able to start the vehicle. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Ericsson+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Ericsson</a> in association with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) had organised this contest. It was kicked off in 2014 to promote innovation within engineering students at select IITs. 
 
This year the Awards have been rolled out to IITs across Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Mandi, Hyderabad as well as IISc Bangalore, BITS Pilani, IIIT Gwalior, IIIT Delhi, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi.

<ul><li>India’s <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> lockdown has been tough on millions of people who fall below the poverty line. </li><li>Pratik Kumar, an <keyword id="1458771" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Delhi-Alumni">IIT Delhi alumni</keyword>, who spent three decades of his career working for agencies like <keyword id="784029" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-United-Nations">the United Nations</keyword>, International NGO and India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare couldn’t sit idle at home. </li></ul>It’s been more than 60 days since Pratik Kumar, a social activist, started going out every day to help those who have lost their jobs and are out of money and food because of the coronavirus. And, he plans to continue helping them but his funds are running out. India’s coronavirus lockdown has been tough on millions of people who fall below the poverty line. Kumar, an IIT Delhi alumni, who spent three decades of his career working for agencies like the United Nations, International NGO and India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare couldn’t sit idle at home. “All the children, parents were in <keyword id="9360134" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="complete-economic-distress">complete economic distress</keyword>. They were not able to do anything. These very self-respecting people were completely stuck. They couldn’t go out to fetch water. If we do not give them anything they wouldn’t survive,” Kumar told Business Insider India. His NGO, Sashakt Foundation has gone through a range of trouble from tons of paperwork to procuring e-passes to travel during the complete lockdown. Now the three-year-old NGO is facing its biggest challenge of all — cash crunch. Getting food to those who need it He started using the network of Sashakt Foundation to provide cooked meals to families who desperately needed it. They started with 300 meals in a day in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. However, the demand was far greater than what they expected and they had to increase their capacity to 8,000 meals in a day from 11 kitchens across India in various cities like Bhuvneshwar Ranchi, Varanasi, Mirzapur, Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad. For Kumar, serving cooked meals wasn’t an option they could continue indefinitely. “Within seven to eight days, we started giving dry rations. They were able to cook. So we prepared a kit that had essentials including 5-kilograms of rice, 5-kilograms atta, spices, tea, salt etc,” Kumar said. Not just food, the NGO also distributed thousands of PPE kits to the Delhi and Haryana government. Facing a cash crunch to create more jobs In the beginning, a lot of people came to donate and volunteer for the NGO. Some organisations including hotel giant ITC foods, Azim Premji Initiatives and Feeding India stepped up. “We received about ₹50 lakh donations from individuals and corporates but the funds have dried up, even corporate funds have dried,” Kumar told Business Insider. Kumar has plans to provide sustainable jobs to people in rural areas. Some of it includes providing feed money to a group of women who make cloth masks in small cities like Gaya or Mirzapur. To help these women Kumar’s Sashakt Foundation requires at least ₹30 lakh. They also plan to be a vendor on e-commerce sites for those small groups who use to sell jewellery in malls. However, all this won’t be possible if they run low on funds. “Noida’s authority asked us for 10,000 face shields but I don’t have that kind of money,” Kumar said while explaining how he had to ask favours from his connections to make things work. Kumar believes they can help create a market which sells quality products and at the same time create job opportunities for those affected by the coronavirus. IIT Delhi alumni who worked with the UN and India’s Health Ministry is running out of money to create more jobs for the needy

The female robot was developed in 2016 by the Hong Kong based Hanson Robotics and ‘activated’ on February 14.</li></ul>This Valentine’s day, students at the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) will have a humanoid share her experiences in 60 different expressions — and answer their questions too. On the sidelines of the institute’s annual fest ‘Technex,’ Sophia — the world’s first robot citizen — will interact with the students approximately for an hour at the institute in Varanasi. This will be a first for the campus, where a robot programmed with artificial intelligence and facial expressions will converse and address the student’s unscripted questions. “The event will witness Sophia take impromptu questions from the audience, IIT-BHU dean of students Professor B N Rai told Business Standard. The event coincides with Sophia’s birthday too. The feminine robot was developed in 2016 by the Hong Kong based Hanson Robotics and ‘activated’ on February 14. She was first seen at the Southwest Festival in Austin, USA. She has a social media presence, too. In October 2017, Sophia received citizenship from Saudi Arabia. Ever since then, the humanoid citizen has delivered several talks at the Indian universities — including <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword> and <keyword id="50307" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Banaras-Hindu-University">Banaras Hindu University</keyword>. She made her debut in India in 2017 with IIT-B — where she was seen in a saree and talked on AI and contemporary global issues. This Valentine’s day, IIT (BHU) students will chit-chat with the world’s first female humanoid ‘Sophia’

<keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> is looking forward to hire more than 300 engineers from the country’s most prestigious technology institute-Indian Institutes of Technology (<keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword>s) and this will lead to making Samsung the top recruiter from IIT campuses this year. 
 
The leader in mobile phone and electronics manufacturing is leading the race in terms of making maximum offers in at least three Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campuses after the first eight days of final placements this year. 
 A <keyword id="107877" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung-India">Samsung India</keyword> spokesperson confirmed that the company plans on hiring over 300 engineers from the <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> this year for its research and development (R&amp;D) institutes in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, Noida and Delhi. 
 
"IITs offer some of the best engineering talent in India, and these young engineers are well-suited to the innovation mindset at Samsung," the person told ET. 
 
Samsung has made the maximum number of offers at IIT Roorkee, IIT Varanasi and Guwahati, handing out 95 offers in these three campuses. 
 At <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword>, it is just behind only <keyword id="45383" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India">Coal India</keyword>. The company is also hiring aggressively from other top IITs such as Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur and Hyderabad. 
 
"Samsung Bangalore has been the top recruiter at our institute this year with 25 offers," Kaustubha Mohanty, head, centre for career development, IIT Guwahati, told ET. 
 At IIT Roorkee, Samsung made 26 offers, followed by <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> with 23 offers, <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> with 17, <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> with 16, and <keyword id="1960232" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Citicorp-Services-India">Citicorp Services India</keyword> and EXL with 15 offers each. 
 
Another top recruiter this year is outsourcing and analytics service provider EXL, which has alreaddy visited eight IITs, which includes Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Madras, Guwahati, and BHU this year, and made 127 offers, up from 111last year. 
 "Driven by its growth-induced demand, EXL has been consistently increasing its offers at the campuses primarily due to the quality, aptitude and trainability of the candidates. EXL hires primarily for its consultant role from all the above campuses. Placements at IITs started on December 1 and are still ongoing. The first phase of the process will end later this month, only to pick up again in January," <keyword id="1567562" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vivek-Jetley">Vivek Jetley</keyword>, senior vice-president, <keyword id="3937269" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="exl-analytics">EXL Analytics</keyword>, told ET. 
 Power management company Eaton also recruited in good numbers. It made 11 offers at <keyword id="922152" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Hyderabad">IIT Hyderabad</keyword> to emerge the single largest recruiter there while at IIT BHU it made 10 offers.

IIT placements: Samsung India plans to hire over 300 engineers, to emerge as top recruiter this year

Many students studying in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) who don’t come from English medium schools are facing a tough time coping up with understanding the instructions in English language. 
 
Due to this, many students at different IITs such as Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati, Varanasi, Kharagpur, Roorkee, etc are getting expelled in their first year and nearly one per cent of them have been expelled due to poor performance every year. 
 ET reported that this year, around 30 students were expelled for four years at <keyword id="108320" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kanpur">IIT Kanpur</keyword>, 12 at <keyword id="57604" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi">IIT Delhi</keyword>, six at <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword>, five at <keyword id="186684" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Guwahati">IIT Guwahati</keyword> and in addition to the recent 10 expelled at <keyword id="6359674" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Roorkee">IIT Roorkee</keyword>. 
 
"Many students who are non-performers face trouble as most of their school education had been in Hindi medium. From class lectures to books at IITs, all are in English, and hence there's a gap in understanding," IIT Kanpur, dean-academic affairs, Neeraj Misra, told ET. 
 
"We have done everything possible. From giving them remedial classes, peer-assistant learning (PAL), mentoring by senior students, handholding sessions by faculty and even translations of lessons (from English to Hindi)," IIT Roorkee director Pradipta Banerji told ET. 
 
Apart from English, non-performance is also another reason. Every year, IIT Delhi also expels nearly 15 students who are academically weak. 
"Only if they fail to turn the tables, we expel these underperformers. Most of them come from Hindi medium schools and face a problem in understanding the lectures," a dean at IIT Delhi told ET. 
 
IIT Guwahati, dean of academic affairs, M Guru Prem Prasad, told ET, "Apart from the language problem, the students fail to solve concept-oriented papers. They can tackle only the objective type of questions. This is also the reason for many failures."

Many students are getting expelled from IITs, and under-performance is not the prime reason

Startups are unaffected by getting banned and are recruiting top talent at IIT placements this year. Regardless of the fact that many of the startups are being blacklisted by the institutes, many international companies that have just started in India are providing the students great offers and some big recruiters' individual hiring numbers. 
 Many like <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> are amongst the blacklisted ones, their rival likes <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> are hiring aggressively at several <keyword id="6386086" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Technology">Indian Institutes of Technology</keyword>, and commanding premium slots in placements along with the likes of logistics startup <keyword id="3932850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rivigo-services">Rivigo Services</keyword> and enterprise software developer CodeNation. 
 Amazon is planning to visit 17 <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> this year and is looking forward to hiring more engineers than last year. It is making its first Jodhpur, Indore and Bhubaneswar IITs. 
 "We firmly believe that as we expand and grow in the country, talented engineers from these institutes will play an instrumental role in driving Amazon's growth in India. We continue to be aggressive in our hiring outlook as we scale up our operations in India,” <keyword id="662878" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raj-Raghavan">Raj Raghavan</keyword>, HR director for APAC at Amazon, told ET. 
 
Paytm, after being benefited by the government’s demonetisation scheme, is now looking forward to increasing its intake from IITs this year. 
 "Paytm is expanding quickly and we are constantly on the lookout for talent to help us keep the momentum,” <keyword id="214729" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amit-Sinha">Amit Sinha</keyword>, senior VP at Paytm, told ET. 
 
The Noida-based ecommerce and digital payments provider has hired from Guwahati, Roorkee, Madras, Bombay and Varanasi (BHU) IITs this year. Besides these biggies, several smaller startups, too, have joined the rush to attract top talent from the country's premier engineering campuses. 
 
"Startups are far from disappearing from the campus. For us, they hold a good share in the placements this year. Where 55 startups have registered for placements this year, up from 50 last year, and they've already handed out more offers than last year,” NP Padhy, professor-in-charge for training and placement at IIT Roorkee, told ET. 
 
There are many new comers in the placement league and the list includes Smartprix, FlyNava Technologies, Clustr, Hike and Buyhatke. 
 
"There are still many startups coming. While most hire in small numbers, they still find takers, especially among students who have a risk appetite,” a senior person involved in IIT placements, told ET. 
 
The IITs also blacklisted a list of startups over a list of numerous reasons. Despite some startups revoking offers in previous years, several students are still eager to join such firms. 
 "Students are now more aware about the uncertainties associated with startups, and more informed. Many are eager to join them, especially those who want to start something of their own in the future and want to gain the experience,” B Venkatesham, placement-in-charge at <keyword id="922152" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Hyderabad">IIT Hyderabad</keyword>, told ET. 
 
Even in campuses where the number of startup recruiters is less than last year, such firms are among the popular recruiters. IIT Madras has given premium slots to companies such as Amazon, Next Education, CodeNation, Rivigo Services and Paytm in the placement process.

Despite getting blacklisted, startups still rock at IIT placements

Just a few days after Delhi was declared a 'gas chamber' choking its own citizens, now the western city of Lucknow is going through its worst phase of consistent bad air quality. While residents have been requesting the government to devise a way to curn the unrelenting smog, <keyword id="108320" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kanpur">IIT Kanpur</keyword> researchers already seem to have a plan - creating <keyword id="1116741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Artificial-Rains">artificial rains</keyword> through cloud-seeding. It’s a practice of artificially inducing or increasing precipitation through clouds by adding external agents. This stimulation is done by aeroplanes or rockets. Pollution levels in several cities of the north western state of Uttar Pradesh were recently declared ‘dangerously polluted’. Varanasi was declared the most polluted city in the country. A report by the <keyword id="67999" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Central-Pollution-Control-Board">Central Pollution Control Board</keyword> (CPCB) has found that the air quality of holy city Varanasi is most polluted among the 42 cities monitored recently. Following this, the Director of IIT Kanpur, Manindra Agarwal told the media that the state government has asked the civil aviation ministry for its approval regarding artificial rains since the area where artificial rains are required need cloud cover. IIT Kanpur was given a grant of Rs 15 lakh from the state government to experiment on the option of artificial rains. The scientists have finished their experiments and are ready to execute. The UP residents therefore will soon see airplanes flying over Lucknow to create artificial rains to bring down the pollution levels. IIT-K has even agreed to modify its six-seater Cessna aircraft to load it with salt for being dropped on the high altitude 'supercooled' clouds. “The measure will definitely reduce air pollution levels. Aerospace, civil engineering and industrial management engineering departments are working on this project,” said Agarwal. How far will this help bring the pollution levels down in Uttar Pradesh, and the rest of the country is being questioned by human rights organisations across India.

How IIT Kanpur scientists are planning to curb pollution in Uttar Pradesh

The Higher Education Ministry may be trying to push the IITs and plan many more, the students aren’t thinking alike. And the proof comes with the fact that most engineering aspirant students who can’t make the cut to the old IITs are opting for NITs or even prime private colleges. 
The course at the IIIT Hyderabad is more reputed than the same one at a less prominent IIT," a student from Bengaluru told The Economic Times. "The only way I would choose to study at another IIT would be if I would be able to take a branch transfer after the first year from a lesser-known IIT to an older IIT." 
 
While the number of operational IITs has risen to 18 in 2015 from seven in 2007, new IITs - despite their premium 'IIT' tag - are losing favour both among top students and recruiters, as teething troubles such as poor infrastructure, paucity of faculty and lack of role models persist. Students who do well in JEE but fail to ginto one of the older IITs would rather go to National Institutes of Technology (NITs) or top private engineering colleges than a relatively new IIT. And recruiters say if there is a pecking order then they would prefer to go to the older, more established IITs, than the NITs and then the new IITs, confirms the ET news report. 
 
Since 2008, 11 new IITs have started operating - in Indore, Mandi, Ropar, Patna, Jodhpur, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Bhubaneswar, Varanasi, Palakkad and Tirupati. The last two start their first batches this year. 
 
But most of them are still to build the infrastructure and all face an acute shortage of faculty, which now reflect on their ability to attract students and recruiters. 
"Faculty shortage is a problem that all the IITs are currently dealing with. This will surely hit the new IITs but all the institutes have to find a way out," Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director at IIT Madras told the financial daily. Beginning 2008, old IITs went through about 50% expansion in student intake over a period of seven years while faculty intake could never match this pace, he said. 
 
Anurag Sharma, dean at IIT Delhi, agreed that the new institutions take at least 5 to 6 years to mature. "It happens to all the institutes in this stage," he said. Sharma also pointed out that each new IIT was given to an old IIT to mentor and that it depends on the mentor to decide whether the new IIT is ready to be launched. "In the case of IIT Delhi, we decided to take another year to formally launch IIT Jammu. The allocation of land took some time. This was purely IIT Delhi's call," he told the ET.

Students ready to choose private colleges and NITs but not the new IITs

Union <keyword id="6355261" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Finance-minister">Finance Minister</keyword> <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword> presented his first budget today. He started his budget speech with a reality check amid high expectations by saying no miracle should be expected in the very first budget and he expected growth to rise to 7-8% over three to four years. He also said that achche din will definitely come but it will not happen overnight and will take some time. 
 During his budget speech, Jaitley asked Speaker <keyword id="6354934" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sumitra-Mahajan">Sumitra Mahajan</keyword> for a five-minute break, which was granted. It was perhaps for the first time that a finance minister asked for a break while presenting the budget. Later, he complained of breathlessness when he resumed his speech and was asked by the Speaker to deliver the speech sitting down. 
 
Jaitley said the people below poverty line want to raise themselves above it. While higher growth is important, we cannot ignore the fact that the poor suffer the most. Emphasising on poverty alleviation, he said slum development would be included in corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities.

<ul><li>India hopes to have the infrastructure required to manufacture the components needed to build a <keyword id="6537818" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="supercomputer">supercomputer</keyword> within the country set up by December 2020.</li><li>Once completed, around 75 institutions and thousands of researchers will have access to the computers using the NKN to solve problems in education, industry, commerce, and other sectors. </li><li>As a part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) 14 institutes have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up the manufacturing infrastructure.</li><li>Under the MoU, some <keyword id="168954" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="supercomputers">supercomputers</keyword> have already been installed. Others will be in place by the end of the year. </li></ul>As a part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), India is planning to set up a slew of supercomputers across the country to form the National Knowledge Network (NKN). However, the Indian government is hoping to change that and have the capability to produce the country’s first indigenous supercomputer by the end of year. 14 institutes across the country — including IITs, NITs, the National Lab and IISER — have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to manufacture the needed components within India by setting up their own infrastructure. This includes designing and developing domestic server boards, interconnect processors, system software libraries, and storage. For instance, India already has its indigenously developed server Rudra. It’s the first server system developed in India with a full software stack. Systems designed and manufactured in India will likely be installed at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai, IIT Chennai and Inter University Accelerator Center (IUAC) in Delhi and CDAC Pune. Three ‘assembled-in India' supercomputers already in place Under the MoU, some supercomputers have already been installed. Others will be in place by December 2020. The first supercomputer Param Shivaay was set up at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Varanasi last year. Another two supercomputers have also been set up at IIT Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Pune. The second and third phases The second phase of the mission is set to be completed by April 2021. It will involve increasing the speed of the supercomputer network in the country to 16 petaflops. During this time eight more institutions will also be equipped with super computing capabilities. In the third phase, the speed of the supercomputer network will be more than doubled to 45 petaflops. Once completed, around 75 institutions and thousands of researchers will have access to the computers using the NKN. The endeavour to build truly ‘Made-in-India’ supercomputers puts India alongside the likes of IBM, Google and HP in the race to expand computing power and solve more complex problems. Made in India supercomputers likely by the end of the year, says National Supercomputing Mission

(Eds: Adds details) New Delhi, Jun 22 () Uttar Pradesh has become the first state to use the Railways' coronavirus isolation wards with coaches deployed at Mau station receiving 59 suspected COVID-19 cases in two days, officials said on Monday.They said eight of them have already been discharged and 51 are housed in these non-air conditioned coaches, modified to work as Covid care cantres. The admitted cases include women and children, the officials said. On June 20, 42 patients were admitted to the isolation coaches at Mau railway station, while 17 the next day, they added. As per official figures, Uttar Pradesh has reported over 18,000 coronavirus cases, while the number of deceased due to the disease stands at 569. The coaches are laced with basic amenities that a patient would require -- handheld showers, mosquito nets, bio-toilets, power sockets, oxygen cylinders and more. However, one of the major challenges for the Railways is to keep the temperature inside these "metal boxes" down so that patient can feel comfortable during the summer heat, when mercury may go several notches beyond normal levels. At Mau railway station, officials have kept industrial size pedestal fans and stacks of hay ready to be deployed for cross-ventilation and cover the roofs of the isolation coaches if the temperatures soar. The Railways is now experimenting with a variety of options to bring down the temperature inside the coaches. These include bamboo blinds on windows and bubble-wrap on the roof as well as heat-resistant coating and portable coolers. It has also used cover-sheets over the coaches to keep the heat out and the interiors cool. These measures will, however, bring the inside temperature down by up up to one degree Celsius only, an official said. The Northern Railways has also coated the roof of isolation coaches with heat-reflective paint as a trial and found that the temperature inside can be reduced up to 2.2 degrees Celsius using this method. Trials are being planned for another coating developed in association with IIT-Bombay. A trial has been carried out by placing portable coolers inside the coaches as well, the Railways said, adding that temperature reduction of up to three degrees Celsius was achieved using them. While efforts are underway to cool things down, officials said they are praying for rain. As of now, the national transporter has deployed a total of 960 "COVID Care" coaches in five states -- Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, as many as 372 such coaches have been stationed at 23 locations -- Lucknow, Varanasi, Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction, Agra, Bhadohi, Kanpur, Saharanpur, Faizabad, Mirzapur, Jhansi, Jhansi Workshop, Nakha Jungle, Subedarganj, Gonda, Bhatni, Nautanwa, Bahraich, Manduadih, Farrukhabad, Varanasi City, Mau, Bareilly City and Kasganj. In an effort to augment the government's efforts to build infrastructure to deal with the spread of COVID-19, the Railways has converted 5,321 non-AC sleeper class ICF (older design) coaches and developed them into COVID Care Level 1 centres for patients with mild symptoms or those suspected to have the infection. The whole world is mourning the demise of the great ‘Missile Man’ of India, Former President of India <keyword id="6402687" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="APJ-Abdul-Kalam">APJ Abdul Kalam</keyword>. While his great achievements in life have inspired us forever, the lesser known notorious facts about him is what makes him the ‘People’s President’ of India. 

	1. When Kalam was with <keyword id="490397" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defence-Research-Development-Organisation">Defence Research Development Organisation</keyword> (DRDO), he rejected the suggestion to put broken glass on the walls of a building that need protection as he was concerned it would be harmful for the birds. 

	2. He founded the trust named PURA (Providing Urban Amenities to Rural Areas) and started giving all his life’s salaries and savings to it when he came to know that the government takes care of its Presidents.
 

	3. Kalam is known to write his own thank you cards with personalised messages in his own handwriting. 
 

	4. It was the convocation day at IIT Varanasi and our own humble Former Prez was the chief guest. He surprised all when he refused to sit on the chair made ready for him. It was slightly larger than the rest.
 

	5. He was famously known for his frequent surprise visits to college and school students and sometimes with minimal security facilities. Once while he was one of the key advisors to the government, he was invited as a guest. Before the event he drove off in a jeep without any security to visit the students of the organising committee and at night.
 

	6. In his book ‘<keyword id="414796" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="My-Journey">My Journey</keyword>’, APJ Abdul Kalam reveals his life’s first lesson that made him the Missile Man of India. He remembers building the first boat with his father. His father’s courage and dedication was what inspired him the most. Not only this, when it was lost in a cyclone, his father’s stoic figure helped him learn his first lesson about life. 

	7. During his tenure at ISRO, he came forward and faced the press during all the failed tests, accepting it as his own mistake. But one huge success and he is nowhere to be seen. He sent his fellow scientists to talk to the press.
 

	8. India had tested five nuclear bombs in 1998 at the Indian army’s Pokhran Test Range. This incident makes it worth mentioning as the way they deceived CIA spying was wonderful. First spotting the time when CIA satellites was over India and then working at shifts accordingly was how the plan was carried. They worked mostly at nights. Also, they dressed in Indian military attire as scientists in plain clothes at army area would attract attention and suspicion. Former President, top scientist, <keyword id="100256" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharat-Ratna">Bharat Ratna</keyword>, these are just some of the titles that come before the name of Dr AJP Abdul <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=kalam">Kalam</a>, who passed away on Monday while delivering lecture at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=iim">IIM </a>Shillong. 
 
Born on October 15, 1931 in a family of a boat owner in Tamil Nadu’s Rameshwaram, Kalam survived all hardship to grow big in life. He distributed newspaper at one to time to support his family and education. 
 After pursuing graduation in Physics from Madras University, AJP <keyword id="5141" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abdul-Kalam">Abdul Kalam</keyword> decide to take up Aerospace Engineering as he then desired to become a fighter pilot. But the destiny had some bigger plans for him. Traversing through his career journey at the <keyword id="6355142" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="DRDO">DRDO</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=isro">ISRO</a>, Chief Scientific Advisor to the <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> in 1992, the <keyword id="858029" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pokhran-nuclear-test">Pokhran nuclear test</keyword>, he was ultimately elected as India’s 11th President in 2002. 
 
And what Kalam will always be remembered for is, a President who brought people to the Rashtrapati Bhawan and this is what made him the ‘People’s President'. 
 
Once the 83-year-old had said, “It is very easy to defeat someone, but it is very hard to win someone.” And certainly it’s his inspiring words through which he rules over a million hearts. 
 
Abhishek Sharma, a software developed, shared on Quora, “Once, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam rejected the suggestion to put broken glass on the wall of a building that needed protection. Why? Because broken glass would be harmful for birds! This happened when Dr Kalam was with the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=drdo">DRDO </a>and his team was discussing options to secure the perimeter of a building that needed protection. Dr Kalam reportedly said, “If we do that, birds will not be able to perch on the wall.” 
 
The other instance is when Quora user Naman Narain drew a sketch of Dr Kalam and sent it to the President. To his surprise, the President sent him a thank you card, with a short handwritten message and personalised with his signature. 
 
At a convocation ceremony of IIT (BHU) Varanasi, Dr Kalam was the Chief Guest. There were five chairs on the stage, the centre one being for him, the other four designated for the top university officials. Noticing his chair being bigger in size than the others, Dr Kalam refused to sit on it and offered the Vice Chancellor to sit in stead. Immediately, another chair was made available for the ‘People’s president.’ 
 Another action that displays down-to-earth demeanour of Dr Kalam is that during his first visit to <keyword id="165422" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Trivandrum">Trivandrum</keyword> as the then President, he was entitled to invite anyone as the “Presidential Guests” to Kerala’s <keyword id="138" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raj-Bhavan">Raj Bhavan</keyword>. And as Dr Kalam had spent a significant time as a scientist in Trivandrum, he invited a road-side cobbler – who was quite close to him during his time in Kerela; and so was the owner of the small hotel where Dr Kalam would often have his meals. Can you ever imagine any other politician or a celebrity of his stature inviting a cobbler and a small business owner as his/her most prestigious guests? 
 <keyword id="6359039" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sourav-Ganguly">Sourav Ganguly</keyword>, who received the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=padma+shri">Padma Shri</a> from Dr Kalam in 2004, recalls instances of the Indian <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cricket">Cricket </a>team's interactions with the former President after finishing runners-up in the 2003 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=world+cup">World Cup</a> in South Africa. "I remember he wished the team. I remember <keyword id="6364325" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anil-Kumble">Anil Kumble</keyword> asked him about his subject. He knew little about cricket and we tried to explain to him how 11 men move around a cricket ball. But whenever we met him we realised that his world and thinking was different. He has become the President of India but his thought process is different from the others," said Ganguly, regarding India’s missile man as a visionary.
