President <keyword id="6354561" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ram-nath-kovind">Ram Nath Kovind</keyword> on Friday awarded prestigious awards to nine meritorious students of <keyword id="6359674" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-roorkee">IIT Roorkee</keyword> as the premier institution held its 19th annual convocation here. This is the first time in the history of the institution that more than 300 students are being awarded their PhD degrees. Three PhD students received the award under the Engineering and Science category from President Kovind. Pulkit Singhal, B.tech, <keyword id="6603085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mechanical-Engineering">Mechanical Engineering</keyword>, received the President Gold Medal for having the highest Cumulative Grade Points Average (CGPA). Hrituraj Singh, B.Tech, Electrical Engineering, was awarded the Institute Silver Medal for having the second highest CGPA. Tanvi Verma, B.Tech, Engineering Physics, received the Institute Bronze Medal for having the third highest CGPA. The Director Gold Medal for the best all rounder went to Sumit Kumar Yadav, B.Tech, Electronics and Communication Engineering while the Gold Medal named after former President of India Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma went to Shivam Jindal, B.Tech, Computer Science and Engineering, for excellent contribution in the field of social service among the all UG/PG students. Anant Vashistha, B.Techh, Production and Industrial Engineering won Dr Jai Krishna Gold Medal for excellent contribution in the field of Youth Leadership. The three students who won the Doctoral Excellence awards are Dr Dhiraj Raj, Department of Earthquake Engineering, Dr Yogeshkumar Manibhai Makwana, Department of Electrical Engineering and Dr Pallavi Gupta, Centre for nanotechnology. Uttarakhand <keyword id="130" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Governor">Governor</keyword> Baby Rani Maurya, HRD Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat and IIT Roorkee Director Professor AK Chaturvedi were also present. Professor N P Padhy, Chairman Convocation, IIT Roorkee said that as many as 2029 students are being awarded degrees in this year's convocation. Out of the 2029 students, 1018 are undergraduate recipients, 702 Post Graduate and 309 PhD degree recipients.

The helmet works like an airbag that can open up in less than 100 milliseconds in case of an impact. It works better than traditional <keyword id="6466767" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="helmets">helmets</keyword> and are also capable of reducing peak impact acceleration and prevent internal brain bleeds. According to the design, the inflatable helmet will be made of<a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/iit-roorkee-students-develop-inflatable-helmet/story-mZpNONfpZ3vWxjeY5Ee4TL.html"> Kevlar</a>. Kevlar is a synthetic fibre used to make bullet-proof jackets. The helmet is worn around the neck and remains folded at the collar. It comes with in-built sensors that measure a host of parameters to detect collision - like acceleration, lean angle and velocity. In case an impact is detected, the helmet inflates and forms a cushion around the cranium to reduce the chances of head injury by four times. The device has been developed by three students, Sarang Nagwanshi, Mohit Siddha and Rajvardhan Singh, who are all in the final year of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Roorkee. They have been guided by Prof. Sanjay Upadhyay from the Department of Mechanical &amp; Industrial Engineering, IIT Roorkee. The three students took inspiration from the <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/science/now-an-inflatable-helmet-for-bikers/article24255799.ece?homepage=true">inflatable space antennae </a>that they came across during an internship project in ISRO. As a helmet like this was being developed in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> for the first time, they got very limited support from any external source. Unlike the inflatable helmets developed overseas, the sensors they are planning to use are cheap and easily available. Therefore, the price of the product will be around ₹1,500-3,000 which is close to the cost of a traditional helmet. The product was recently tested for its productivity and effectiveness, and has shown positive results. However it is <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/education/iit-roorkee-develops-inflatable-safety-helmet-for-motor-cyclists/articleshow/64736183.cms">not ready</a> for mass production yet as the team is still working to make it consumer-friendly and is also looking for industrial partnerships for its launch. As per the<a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/road-accidents-in-india-2016-17-deaths-on-roads-every-hour-chennai-and-delhi-most-dangerous-4837832/"> 2016 official data</a>, 17 road accident deaths take place every hour and 27% of the total deaths involve two-wheelers. If the plan on paper is executed well, the helmet promises greater <keyword id="87280" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="road-safety">road safety</keyword> and should reduce the number of these accident deaths.

According to the dean of the institution, the answer lies in innovative thinking. “The problems are not limited to one particular domain or expertise. However, the basic skills remain the same. What gives engineers an edge is ‘the incremental improvement’ they can add while solving a problem. “When we are looking at an engineer graduating from college, we are looking at a productive life of over 30 years. That will only happen when they know how to think,” he said. The dean of IIT Roorkee says what you learn in graduation will be obsolete in 3 years

Even as there have been more <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Recruiters-going-the-video-conferencing-way-at-IITs-heres-why/articleshow/55872382.cms">recruiters on the IIT campuses</a> this year,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Meet-Aditi-Laddha-from-IIT-Bombay-who-got-a-job-offer-from-Uber-International-the-highest-one-across-many-IITs/articleshow/55807767.cms"> placement offers </a>have surprisingly seen a downfall by 10%. 
 
In terms of the<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Big-ticket-recruiters-Microsoft-Oracle-Uber-offer-up-to-Rs-1-2-crore-annual-salary-packages-to-IITians/articleshow/55746111.cms"> number of companies participating in the IIT placements </a>this year, a little over 300 companies have registered this year, against 280 last year at IIT-Kharagpur. Meanwhile, IIT-Guwahati has seen the number rise from 150 last year to 200 this year. 
 At <keyword id="108320" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kanpur">IIT Kanpur</keyword>, it was more or less the same as last year with the first three days seeing 315 offers being made. 
 Only <keyword id="6359674" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Roorkee">IIT Roorkee</keyword> seems to be happy. They told TOI recently that they have not seen a decline in the number of offers compared to last year, instead, they are higher marginally. "We didn't focus too heavily on the IT sectors and therefore, our non-computer science disciplines have also seen decent placements," said NP Padhy, Professor-in-Charge at IIT Roorkee. 
 
One of the reasons for the downfall in offers per recruiter is being attributed to the rise in the number of the IITs. There are 23 IITs in total in the country, and several recruiters have made their way to the new ones this year. 
 The other reason is the revisions in recruitment trends done by firms. Even as <keyword id="44880" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PSUs">PSUs</keyword> have raised the average packages to a decent extent if not significantly, several companies have reduced the number/amount of offers compared to last year.

IIT Roorkee student’s TikTok clone app Mitron TV is riding high in downloads because of its association with PM Modi’s favourite word

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are looking forward to better placements this December as compared to last year in the same month. There has been an increase of about 25%-30% in the pre-placement offers (PPOs) and the companies are eager to sign up to recruit the students. 
 The companies that had already hired students as interns have taken the PPO route this year and are ready to recruit them full time. Several <keyword id="6456931" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Roorkee">IIT-Roorkee</keyword> students have been hired by the PPOs in the companies like American Express India, Vodafone, Accenture Services, Visa and <keyword id="193108" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Capital-One">Capital One</keyword> <keyword id="6354241" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Financial-Services">Financial Services</keyword>. Similarly in IIT-Kanpur, Barclays, which used to visit the campus, has offered PPOs to candidates, but has not confirmed its participation in the placement season. HUL is another such company. 
 "Across IITs, we have seen that PPOs are on the rise. We expect the number to go up. The rise in PPOs is the fallout of the internship process getting streamlined," IIT-Madras training and placement advisor <keyword id="3807344" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="manu-santhanam">Manu Santhanam</keyword> told ET. 
 
IIT-Madras, last year, received 69 PPOs and it has already received 64 this year. 
 In <keyword id="6355690" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT-Bombay</keyword>, 125 companies have signed up for the recruitment through the PPO route. According to <keyword id="186045" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rakesh-Patel">Rakesh Patel</keyword>, Placement Team Leader, 270 companies have already signed in and the figure is expected to touch 320. . At IIT-Roorkee, a little more than 110 "quality" PPOs have been offered and 30 are in the pipeline. This marks about 305 rise from last year. 
 
"These are very good PPOs, not those offered by start-ups. Nearly 300 companies are expected to land up on campus for the final placement process," placement head N P Padhy, told ET. 
 <keyword id="1244961" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-BHU">IIT-BHU</keyword> has also seen a hike of about 32% in PPOs to 94 from 72 in 2015. IIT-Kharagpur has received 150 PPOs and is inching closer to its last year's mark of 170. 
 
The institute is expecting 250 companies to arrive on campus for recruitment, which begins, from December 1. Around 1,950 students are gearing up to sit in the placement process.
