Rakesh Gangwal, co-founder of budget carrier IndiGo and an <keyword id="108320" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit-kanpur" source="Orion">IIT Kanpur</keyword> alumnus, has made a personal donation of Rs 100 crore to support the School of Medical Sciences and Technology at his alma mater. <keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword> <keyword id="6357478" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="kanpur" source="Orion">Kanpur</keyword> Director Abhay Karandikar confirmed this in a series of tweets. "Here is big news from IIT Kanpur. In an extraordinary gesture, our alumnus Rakesh Gangwal, co-founder of IndiGo airlines has made one of the largest personal donations with a Rs 100 crore contribution focused on supporting the School of Medical Sciences and Technology at IIT Kanpur," Karandikar tweeted. Gangwal has also signed a pact with IIT Kanpur to set up a school of Medical Sciences and Technology on the IIT Kanpur campus. He also donated Rs 100 crore for the purpose. The IndiGo co-founder will also soon join the Advisory Board of the institution. Gangwal told reporters, "It is a privilege to be associated with such a noble endeavour with my alma mater. I am proud to see that the institution that has produced thousands of leaders across various sectors is now paving the way in the healthcare sector. More than ever, healthcare is intertwined with technological advances and this school will accelerate innovation in healthcare." This school will be completed in two phases. The first phase will include setting up a 500-bed super-specialty hospital, academic block, residential/hostel and service block with a total built-up area of around 8, 10,000 square feet. It will also involve setting up Centres of Excellence (CoE) for pursuing R&amp;D activities in futuristic medicine and is tentatively planned to be completed over 3-5 years. The second phase is planned to be completed in 7-10 years and will see the hospital capacity to grow to 1,000 beds. It will also involve expanding clinical departments/centres, research areas, the inclusion of paramedical disciplines, alternative medicine, hospital management, sports medicine and public health programmes. Karandikar thanked Gangwal for his contribution and said: "The proposed medical school will play an important role in driving IIT Kanpur's innovations in medical research and technology and catapult India into the global league of institutions that are converging medical sciences and technology to benefit humankind." The dip in fresher hiring may seem more pronounced in the IT sector, which traditionally hires the majority of new engineering entrants to the workforce. Typically, the IT sector absorbs 20-25% of the 1.5 million engineering graduates in India annually. “Companies have had to cut back on freshers' hiring due to a weak deal pipeline, recessionary fears in the US, and the need to utilise existing resources effectively,” says Krishna Vij, Business Head, TeamLease Digital, a job portal for tech freshers. According to NLB Services, a talent solutions company, the <keyword id="6374576" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="it-industry" source="Orion">IT industry</keyword> has seen a dip in the <keyword id="6441485" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="freshers-hiring" source="Orion">freshers hiring</keyword> intent from 49% in H1 2023 to 42% in H1 2024. What should you do? Uncertain economic conditions come in cycles and if you are a fresher it is just a coincidence that you trying to find your first job in the middle of one. Nothing to do with how good your skills are. But, to navigate such challenging times better, there are things you can do that increase your chances of getting hired. Acquire relevant skills through certifications In the 21st century, having a degree may not be enough. You need skills that are relevant to the job you are applying for, and proof that you have them. In addition to your regular degree, acquire one or two skills preferably through certification. There are many industry-certified courses available both online and offline. Before you enrol on any such courses, talk to your seniors or those already in a job to find out which are the skills in demand. It is essential to stay proactive and not give up. “Developing a combination of technical competencies and soft skills is crucial, alongside participation in hackathons and collaborative projects to showcase practical abilities,” says Vij. Update your profile and network Getting a job off-campus is a time-consuming process. It involves a lot of preparation and results may not be immediate. The first step is to let potential employers know that you are available for hire. “Continually update your profiles on job boards and expand your network on platforms such as LinkedIn, particularly with regards to target companies. Increase engagement and enhance visibility within the talent acquisition community,” says Kesavan. Seek out a mentor In difficult situations, sound advice always comes in handy. “Connecting with industry peers, experts and mentors can make a huge impact on one’s professional journey,” says Sachin Alug, CEO, NLB Services. Freshers must find appropriate networks that play a vital role in their learning, scope of opportunities and creating a sustainable career. From your college professor to your neighbour to your senior, you may find a good mentor if you continuously seek genuine help. Take up a part-time job If you are not getting a job consider taking up part-time gigs which are related to your field of work. Working part-time to utilise one’s time in a productive way can be a good idea for many candidates. “This not only empowers them financially but also allows them time to prepare for their full-time professions. While aspirants may choose part-time <keyword id="11018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jobs" source="Orion">jobs</keyword> as a temporary occupation, the focus must not shift from enhancing one’s skills in the direction they want to excel in,” says Alug. On April 6, Schlumberger told IITs that it will reduce the intake of new campus hires, withdrawing a few internships and job offers. “We will personally communicate our decision to each student who is affected by this decision,” Indian Express <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/energy-major-schlumberger-withdraws-job-offers-to-fresh-iit-graduates-6373375/">reported</a> citing the letter by Gautam Reddy, MD, India and Bangladesh at Schlumberger. IIT graduates bagged ‘above-average salary packages’ this placement season According to the report, two students at IIT Delhi and Bombay have lost their jobs at Schlumberger. While two other selected graduates from IIT Kanpur and Madras have now been offered similar roles — but at lower salaries. Given the current situation, it does not help that most of the IIT graduates bagged ‘above-average salary packages’ this placement season. IIT Kharagpur students also bagged a few offers from Schlumberger. “As on date, none of the offers were revoked. That was a generic email. We haven’t heard back from them,” Parag Deshpande, vice-chairperson, CDC at IIT-Kharagpur said. “As of now we have withdrawn the offers. If the business climate changes, we will be the first to reach out to those who have been filtered through the whole recruitment process,” Reddy added. ‘We have to take care of our employees first’ Reddy also <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/energy-major-schlumberger-withdraws-job-offers-to-fresh-iit-graduates-6373375/">said</a> that employees across the top management have already taken a pay cut due to the Covid-19 crisis. “We have a longstanding relationship with the IITs. While others are evaluating online examination modules, grading systems and early graduation. <keyword id="6359674" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-roorkee">IIT Roorkee</keyword> said that it will promote students of 2019-20 batch based on performance grade points. However, it mentioned that the students can appear for the exam later, if they don’t want to go ahead with the grading pattern. "We have introduced a system to convert a pass letter grade to a Satisfactory (S) grade without grade point if a student requests for the same. The weightage ranges of various evaluation components have been revised. Further, students also have the option to appear in a re-exam to improve their grades," Director AK Chaturvedi told news agency PTI. IIT Kharagpur and Kanpur have decided to mark students based on internal assessments including viva, projects, quizzes and mid-semester exams. The institute has formulated a special committee to work on the grading scheme. In fact, as an exception due to COVID crisis, <keyword id="108320" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kanpur">IIT Kanpur</keyword> said that no student will fail this year, and the grades would be marked as A,B,C or S. Parag Agrawal has been with Twitter for just over a decade now and joined as a software engineer. Before taking over as CEO, he was the chief technology officer at the social media firm worth over $37 billion. At Twitter, Agrawal was responsible for the company’s technical strategy, and oversaw machine learning and AI across the consumer, revenue and science teams. Before joining Twitter, Agrawal had stints at Microsoft, Yahoo and AT&amp;T in research roles. Dorsey described him as curious, probing, rational, creative, demanding, self-aware and humble. “The world is watching us right now, even more than they have before. <ul><li>Indian universities rank almost as high as global universities in the engineering and technology domain. </li><li>According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Delhi feature in the top 50 for the first time. </li><li>Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral &amp; mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical &amp; electronic engineering. </li><li>Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. Now, its universities are being ranked high especially in the engineering and technology domain. According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, India’s premier engineering institutions — Bombay and Delhi campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) — have been ranked in the top 50 universities for the very first time. IIT Delhi ranked 44th while IIT Bombay crawled up nine spots to rank 47th in the global list. Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral and mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical and electronic engineering. "It is a significant achievement of our premiere engineering institutions, which has made India proud. This is the result of continuous efforts of our government to promote the environment of research and innovation in our educational institutions," Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' said. Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. "This is the result of the various measures we have taken in the institute on boosting the research ecosystem on the campus, strengthening our connect with the external stakeholders, significantly enhanced internationalization efforts from the institute and various other measures initiated in the last three years," IIT Delhi director V Ramgopal Rao told news agency PTI. This comes as good news to the Indian universities that were striving to make a mark, globally. Nearly 20 universities were ranked in the top 200 in the <a href="https://www.qs.com/rankings-revealed-qs-wur-asia-2020/">QS World University Rankings: Asia 2020</a> this year. However, the IITs — Bombay, Delhi and Madras campuses — did not make it to the top 30. The rankings suggest India’s strength in the natural sciences, life sciences, and in engineering disciplines, QS <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/education/india-improves-tally-in-top-100-qs-world-university-rankings-by-subject-120030401416_1.html">report said</a>. In Chemistry, 20 Indian universities have been ranked on the top, followed by computer science, physics, astronomy and biological sciences. Globally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) emerged as the best-performing institution, followed by Harvard University and the University of Oxford, which was at the top for eight subjects.
