New Delhi [India], August 12 (ANI): <keyword id="19953789" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras" source="keywords">IIT Madras</keyword> has been ranked the <keyword id="19925221" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="best" source="keywords">best</keyword> <keyword id="22759867" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-educational-institution" source="keywords">higher educational institution</keyword> in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> followed by IISc Bengaluru and IIT Bombay in an overall category in the ranking conducted by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The announcement was made on Monday by the Ministry of Education at an event at the Bharat Mandapam in the national capital that was presided by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Indian Institute of Technology Madras was ranked first in the <keyword id="22759868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIRF-rankings" source="keywords">NIRF rankings</keyword> 2024 and it is the 6th time that it has bagged the top spot in NIRF ranking. IIT-Madras has also been ranked as the best engineering college for the past nine years. In the management category, IIM-Ahmedabad and Bangalore and Calcutta are among the top five. Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) ranked as the best university in the country followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. Delhi University's Hindu College ranked as the best college in the country followed by Miranda House College and St. Stephen's College. The Chennai-based institute retained the No 1 position in categories "overall and engineering" The NIRF rankings lists was released for 13 different categories, including universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, and innovation. New Delhi, The first IIT campus outside India will come up in Tanzania's Zanzibar, the <keyword id="6374106" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ministry-of-external-affairs" source="Orion">Ministry of External Affairs</keyword> (MEA) said on Thursday. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed for setting up of a campus of <keyword id="6356755" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-madras" source="Orion">IIT Madras</keyword> in Zanzibar, which is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa. The agreement was inked on Wednesday in presence of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Zanzibar's President Hussein Ali Mwinyi. Jaishakar is on a visit to Tanzania. "The first IIT campus to be set up outside India will be in Zanzibar," the MEA said. It said an MoU was signed between the India's education ministry, IIT Madras and Zanzibar's ministry of education and vocational training. "This campus is reflective of the longstanding friendship between India and Tanzania and a reminder of the focus India places on building people to people ties across Africa and the Global South," the MEA said. It said the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommends that "high performing Indian universities will be encouraged to set up campuses in other countries". "Recognising the strategic partnership between Tanzania and India, the relationship of educational partnership has been formalised by signing the document which provides the framework for the parties to detail out the setting up of the proposed campus of IIT Madras in <keyword id="17916122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zanzibar-tanzania" source="Orion">Zanzibar-Tanzania</keyword>, with plans to launch programmes in October 2023," the MEA said.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (<keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword>) Madras have developed an online open-source database of coronaviruses' neutralising antibodies. The database called 'Ab-CoV' contains detailed information about all Covid-related antibodies identified so far, including the source of each antibody, and the viral protein(s) and virus strains they recognise, the institute said in a statement on Monday. 'Ab-CoV' can also aid in the development of drugs against new variants of SARS-CoV-2. The Ab-CoV database includes 1,780 coronavirus-related antibodies, including 211 nanobodies, and contains more than 3,200 data points on half maximal inhibitory concentration, half maximal effective concentration and binding affinity. The information compiled in this database, published in the peer-reviewed journal Bioinformatics, can assist researchers in antibody engineering; analysing immune escape for known and future variants of SARS-CoV-2; computational studies on neutralising antibodies; and relating structural features with binding affinity. "Some of the data in the Ab-CoV database has already been used to understand the relationship between structural features and binding affinities of spike protein-antibody complexes as well as antibody repurposing," said M. Michael <keyword id="16850346" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gromiha" source="Orion">Gromiha</keyword>, Faculty, Department of Biotechnology, IIT Madras, in the statement. "Ab-CoV also has a wide range of search and display options through which users can directly search and download the processed data, based on the antibody's name, viral protein epitope, neutralised viral strain, antibody and nanobody. It also has the option to view structures of antibodies or viral proteins in a 3D model," Gromiha added. Although large amounts of experimental and computational data have been stored online to understand the virus, the emergence of new variants prompted researchers to gather new and comprehensive information. Such efforts will help to develop newer drugs and deal better with disasters that affect human health and economies, globally. "AbCoV is an exhaustive repository of antibodies, not just specific to SARS CoV-2 but also to other members of the coronavirus family such as <keyword id="1394053" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="severe-acute-respiratory-syndrome" source="Orion">Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome</keyword> (SARS) and <keyword id="1682499" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="middle-east-respiratory-syndrome" source="Orion">Middle East Respiratory Syndrome</keyword> (MERS) viruses," said <keyword id="15103493" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vani-janakiraman" source="Orion">Vani Janakiraman</keyword>, Faculty, Department of Biotechnology, IIT Madras. "This repository would aid in comparative studies among different neutralising antibodies across coronaviruses and to assess their properties, interaction patterns with epitopes on the native and mutant viral proteins. Such an effort eventually would help to gauge the efficacy of these antibodies towards existing and emerging viral variants," she added. IIT Madras team develops novel database on Covid antibodies

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) will be setting up an Innovation and Entrepreneurship fund of Rs 100 crore to support start-ups. The premier city-based institute said it is also planning to ensure that at least five of its Centers of Excellence rank among the top three in the world in their respective fields. "<keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword> Madras is going to establish an Innovation and Entrepreneurship fund of Rs 100 Crore to support student and faculty's efforts to establish start-ups." These were "among the top goals the institute has set for itself in the Strategic Plan for the Period 2022-27. The targets envisioned include creating an institute with a diversified group of faculty, students and staff, pursuing nationally relevant and internationally recognised basic and translational research," it said. IIT-M said it has been developing and following strategic plans periodically for more than two decades now. "By the end of this plan period, the institute will have significantly upgraded and augmented its infrastructure to support its ambitious programmes. The Discovery Campus, which is the satellite campus of IIT-M located about 36 km from main campus, will be home to an increasing number of specialised world-class research facilities," it said in a release. <keyword id="14247532" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="prof-v-kamakoti" source="Orion">Prof V Kamakoti</keyword>, Director of the institute, said, "in the next five years, we would like to realise an IIT Madras with a diversified group of faculty, students and staff actively pursuing nationally relevant and internationally-recognised fundamental and translational research. In the rankings, released in London recently, IIT Bombay was evaluated as India's top higher education institution for its excellence in employability, social concern, and environment. IIT Bombay was featured in the 281-300 rank range, followed by IIT Delhi (321-340 rank) and <keyword id="58265" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jawaharlal-nehru-university" source="Orion">Jawaharlal Nehru University</keyword> (JNU) at the third rank (361-380). Apart from this, IIT Bombay was also included in the world's top 100 institutes based on the employability of its graduates. IIT Delhi was ranked for its employability and environment while Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was ranked for gender equality and removing other inequalities. In terms of competition and academic freedom, <keyword id="6360099" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi-university" source="Orion">Delhi University</keyword> ranked fourth in India. Globally, the University of California was declared the top university, followed by the <keyword id="127994" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-of-toronto" source="Orion">University of Toronto</keyword> and the <keyword id="156050" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-of-british-columbia" source="Orion">University of British Columbia</keyword> in second and third ranks respectively. The US dominates the rankings with 135 ranked universities (19.2 per cent of the total). Of these, 30 universities are included in the top 100. Similarly, the UK was ranked second with 67 British universities being included in the rankings. After the US and the UK, Australia and Germany are at the forefront of this ranking. QS Rankings: IIT Bombay best in employability, IIT Delhi ranks second

It has asked the 23 Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) to plan a course of action to improve them. The international ranking of IITs slipped further this year. Indian government demands an action plan from IITs to improve global rankings

Miranda House, Lady Shri Ram College (LSR) and Hindu College are the top performers under the country’s premier government university — University of Delhi. The Indian government has been releasing the national rankings since 2016. The centre’s rankings are based on several parameters including teaching, research and professional practices, learning and resources, graduation outcome, outreach and inclusivity, and perception. The annual ranking is also comparative to the global university rankings by the Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) — featuring Indian IITs and IISc in the top ranking institutions access the globe. However, Indian universities are yet to make a mark on a global scale — the rankings have declined in the past. The team, consisting of 40 students, has earned its place in the international event because of the self-propelled, autonomous hyperloop pod developed by it. Mentored by the Centre For Innovation (<keyword id="257398" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="CFI">CFI</keyword>), <keyword id="6356755" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-madras">IIT Madras</keyword>, Team <keyword id="4121004" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Avishkar">Avishkar</keyword> was the only team from Asia to qualify for the finals of the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition 2019, a global contest organised by Elon <keyword id="364027" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Musk">Musk</keyword>'s aerospace company SpaceX. It was Musk who had proposed the idea of a hyperloop in his 2013 white paper on 'Hyperloop Alpha'. Out of more than 1,600 teams participating in this prestigious cutting-edge event, Team Avishkar was among the Top 21. Hyperloop offers a new revolutionary mode of transportation -- a high-speed train that travels in a near-vacuum tube. The reduced air resistance allows the capsule inside the tube to reach speeds of more than 1,000 km/h, thereby dramatically reducing travel time across medium-range distances. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and the lockdowns, the 40 students of Team Avishkar collaborated with each other on the development of the Hyperloop pod from their homes. They completely revamped the pod's sub-systems with scalable and efficient technologies. In the past few months, they manufactured a Hyperloop Pod prototype and tested the novel technology. "Our research has yielded technological breakthroughs such as the linear induction motor for propulsion, a proprietary levitation technology, and contactless magnetic braking system," said Neel Balar, Team Avishkar lead and third-year student at the IIT's Department of Engineering Design. "Looking beyond the pod, the team is also focusing efforts on the design of the Hyperloop's infrastructure," he added. Explaining the importance of the infrastructure, such as tubes and pylons, Kishan Thakkar, fourth-year student at the IIT's Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, said it takes up about 70 per cent of a Hyperloop corridor's budget. "Our research is focused mainly on reducing the cost of this infrastructure and adapting the Hyperloop to the needs of the Indian sub-continent," Thakkar said in a statement. "The team is truly pushing the frontiers of this technology to create a sustainable future," he added. Hyperloop has been a buzzword in India for the past few years. Several companies have proposed routes such as Mumbai-Pune and Chandigarh-Amritsar. After an initial study, Team Avishkar is working on a detailed study of energy needs, costs, demand and other aspects of a business model for a Hyperloop corridor between Bangalore and Chennai to assess the economic feasibility of the idea in India. Team Avishkar estimates that the travel time between Bangalore and Chennai can be reduced to just 30 minutes, compared with the six hours it takes today by car or train. Deloitte India has provided support to the team's efforts to make its mark at the European Hyperloop Week, which will be held in Valencia, Spain, from July 19 to 25. The team will participate virtually because of the pandemic-related travel restrictions. India’s IIT Delhi now ranks in top 500 world university rankings

ARIIA is an initiative of the Ministry of Education to systematically rank higher education institutions and universities on indicators related to innovation. The ranking is done in six categories -- centrally-funded institutes of national importance, state-funded universities, state-funded autonomous institutions, deemed universities, private institutions, and women only higher educational institutions. Speaking at the occasion, Union Minister of Education Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' mentioned that the ranking is named after former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. "Under his leadership, India took many leaps in the field of Innovation. ARIIA gives us a reflection of our efforts and provides us with a reason to celebrate our achievements. A National Research Foundation (NRF) will be set up for invigorating innovation and research under recently released Nation Education Policy (NEP)," he said. The minister said this year, the category of women only higher educational institutions was introduced to encourage women and bringing gender parity in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship. Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women bagged the top prize in the category. Releasing the ranking, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said, "Innovation has always been key defining feature of human progress. India has its own illustrious history of innovations spanning at least 20 centuries right from the invention of 'zero' and the decimal system. India was known as the 'vishwa guru'. We must regain that intellectual leadership, we must again emerge as a global hub of learning and innovation." "We have highly talented youths brimming with new ideas, with a passion for implementation and willingness to forge a new path. The youth will define our country's future. They need encouragement, facilitation and recognition, they must be given needed guidance and freedom to explore new frontiers," Naidu added.

IIT Madras, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi are the top three centrally-funded institutes

<keyword id="6386086" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Technology">Indian Institutes of Technology</keyword> (<keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword>), the elite colleges in India, have lost places in this year’s <keyword id="3627377" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="QS-World-University-Rankings-2016-17">QS World University Rankings 2016-17</keyword> which were issued today, while Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has retained its top position for the fifth consecutive year. 
 
The best-ranked institution from India remained Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, even as it lost ranks and dropped out of the top 150. 
 
As the only good news, IIT Madras managed to break into the top 250, five ranks up from last year. 
 
Talking of world's top 100 institutions in research impact, only four Indian institutions feature in the list, as compared to last year's five, since the ranking of IIT Madras has dropped to 101. In this field, India’s best institute is IISc, ranked 11th. 
 "The performance of Indian institutions in our recent regional rankings suggests that India is gaining some ground on its regional competitors. Though India is making substantial and commendable progress towards ensuring that more of its tertiary-age population have access to tertiary education, the global edition indicates that substantial challenges remain," said <keyword id="1667476" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ben-Sowter">Ben Sowter</keyword>, head of research at QS Intelligence Unit.
