At an event titled ‘A journey back to the past to inspire the future’, <keyword id="1604185" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pichai">Pichai</keyword> would discuss his experiences at the institution. Pichai graduated in metallurgical engineering at <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword> in 1993. After that he went to the <keyword id="6359922" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="States">States</keyword> and attended <keyword id="101399" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford-University">Stanford University</keyword> and the Wharton School of Business.

Their Diwali was both eco-friendly and noiseless, and it was probably most beautiful than you'd ever have seen. 
 
Like every year, it was time for 'Illumination' - IIT Kharagpur's famous cultural festival. As it kickstarted, students join forces to light up the entire campus. Illumination has been celebrated for decades now and every year the students build panels and make rangolis and light them up with thousands of diyas. What's fascinationg is during Illumination, lights are put off for 2 to 3 hours and only diyas light up the campus. 
 <keyword id="3798716" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandan-karwat">Chandan Karwat</keyword>, whose captured the event, told media earlier - "IIT Kharagpur is spread over some 2200 acres and has around 10,000 students. All these students reside in our residence halls. And every year students of these 21 halls compete to decorate the campus. The preparations start a month before Diwali. Everything is done by students, no labour or no help is involved."

Lights go off in IIT Kharagpur every Diwali, and what this campus transforms into is breathtakingly beautiful

Of the 1,310 job offers given out, more than half are in the fields of software and analytics. In total, over 215 companies from consulting, analytics, banking and finance sectors participated in the hiring. Core and banking sectors contributed almost 40% to the recruitment. The placements "comfortably passed all the previous years' record," the institute said. It crossed the threshold of 1,000 offers in the first five days — including 41 international opportunities. Nearly 19 offers came from the public sector undertakings (PSUs). “This has been the fastest 1,000 offers to date, and in fact a day ahead of last year,” GP Raja Sekhar, head of All IIT Placement Committee <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/education/iits-end-first-week-of-placements-on-a-high-note-beating-last-year-s-show-119120901247_1.html">told</a> Business Standard. More than half of the job offers at IIT Kharagpur came from the software and analytics sectors

<keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword> has another feather in its cap as scientists have successfully tested a new tool for electronic railway interlocking system which prevents trains from colliding into each other. This means train journeys could soon be far safer than they are today. 
 
Through its Research Design and Standards Organisation, the Railways had awarded 12 research projects to the IIT’s Centre for Railway Research recently in the area of analysis and design of rolling stock, infrastructure, operations and maintenance. The breakthrough has come in one of these projects. 
 Professor <keyword id="3807692" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="pallab-dasgupta">Pallab Dasgupta</keyword>, lead researcher of the project, said since errors in the application logic of interlocking systems may have catastrophic consequences, this development has potential to minimize the chance of such errors. The tool has already been successfully tested in several railway yards, Dasgupta claimed. The <keyword id="55119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> researchers said this project has the potential to be further extended to study and develop optimum traffic operation plans, alternative plans for emergencies. 
 
Meanwhile, several of the products and technologies are being field tested at various facilities of Indian Railways apart from lab testing at IIT Kharagpur. The next step would be to further develop the products and technologies with an industrial partner for production, the experts said. 
 
 Innovations are not a new thing at IITs. Recently, a couple of software have been developed in IIT Kharagpur aimed at revolutionizing the way in which the disabled persons can cope up with day-to-day activities. In simple terms, buying vegetables from the market or composing poetry will just be a touch on the smart device away. 
 Softwares ‘<keyword id="3807691" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="akash-baani">Akash Baani</keyword>’ and ‘Sanyog’ will help them express their feelings by touching icons on the screen, which will then create sentences, and further be translated into voice messages.

IIT-Kharagpur outperformed 276 institutes from across the country and maximum awards it won were of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=medical">medical</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=biotech">biotech</a> innovations. The appreciations were in engineering category. 
 
"After four rounds of evaluation, 19 teams have been selected for innovation awards and 24 for appreciation. Of the 19 awards, 15 awardees in Medical and Biotech innovations category will get Department of Biotechnology sponsored (BITAC-SRISTI) grant of Rs 15 lakh each to further their prototypes," an IIT release said. 
 
GYTI 2016 was a pan-India competition with over 2,363 innovation entries in 50 technology domains from 276 institutes from 26 states and two Union Territories.

IIT-Kharagpur shows how to innovate, bags maximum laurels at innovation awards

Three students from <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword> are gearing up to win the final stage of global competition <keyword id="3439391" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shell-Ideas360-Challenge">Shell Ideas360 Challenge</keyword> scheduled to be held in London on June 27. 
 
The winners of the competition will work with Shell experts and mentors to develop ideas for tackling the pressures on the world’s food, water and energy resources. 
 Gaurav, Apurva and Ankit from IIT Kharagpur will be competing against finalists from US, Singapore and the UK. The winning team will also be sent on an all expense paid expedition by <keyword id="6393127" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Geographic">National Geographic</keyword>. 
 
The selection process of the competition invited applications from across the globe in September last year. It generated 982 ideas in the first stage of which 74 ideas were shortlisted in the second stage based on rigorous assessment - 7 master reviewers reviewed each idea over four times. They are experts in food, energy and water including two experts, who are former Shell employees. 
 How the Kharagpur trio made it to the finals is by developing <keyword id="3439390" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="GrowSmart">GrowSmart</keyword>, a smart solution that will let farmers increase land productivity at reduced cost by leveraging low cost soil diagnostics technology. It will provide farmers with detailed analysis of soil and offer recommendations for better practices. 
 
All three Gaurav, Apurva and Ankit say, they are delighted to have made it this far in the competition, and are charged up to give their best shot in the finals.

3 students from IIT Kharagpur will soon be
London-bound on a very lucrative deal

It's not just the common man, but even the IITs are bearing the brunt of Modi’s <keyword id="3315394" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="demonetisation">demonetisation</keyword> move. According to sources, the cash crunch has affected the maintenance work on the campuses. 
 
There are 23 IITs in the country. A number of them incur an expenditure of over Rs 1 lakh every day while the government has fixed the weekly withdrawal limit at Rs 50,000. 
 
These premier institutes claim they are conducting conferences and workshops on a daily basis which are attended by thousands of students and faculty members. These are fixed in advance and they are likely to get affected due to the restriction on cash withdrawal. 
 For this reason, several IITs including <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword> have approached the <keyword id="51613" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hrd-ministry">HRD ministry</keyword> seeking relaxation from the cash withdrawal limit norm stating that they have to spend a substantial amount on maintenance of their huge campuses on a daily basis, and they are not being able to do so. 
 “We are a community of 20,000 people on campus. There are 40 academic units at <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> Kharagpur. The institute needs close to Rs 2 lakh in cash to carry out various functions. We are not used to operating completely in a cashless manner. Till we make that transition, we have requested the ministry to relax the withdrawal embargo,” an official of IIT Kharagpur told Indian Express. 
 The IITs have also urged the HRD ministry to take up the issue with the <keyword id="47209" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Finance-Ministry">finance ministry</keyword>. 
 
Sources said that the HRD Ministry may soon write to the Finance Ministry to communicate the difficulties being faced by universities and institutes and their need for more cash to carry out their administrative functions.

Even the IITs are affected by Modi's demonetisation move

Just two days ago, the news of a depressed17-year-old boy - son of an IIT Bombay professor, committing suicide hit the national headlines. His suicide note mentioned that he could not cope with <keyword id="929880" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="academic-pressure">academic pressure</keyword>. Such cases have been on the rise, especially among IIT aspirants, <keyword id="28443" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-students">IIT students</keyword> and children of IIT faculty members. Earlier this year, a 20-year-old student living at the IIT-B campus and a son of a faculty member, stabbed himself to death after an altercation with his family members. Last year in April, a 17-year-old daughter of a faculty member had taken her life by jumping off a building in the campus. While the administration is still trying hard to deal with this challenge, <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword> has taken a step forward to help students deal with their daily stress. It's compelling students, who are otherwise huddled in their tiny dorms buried under an avalanche of books, to move out of their rooms and mingle with others. How this is being done is rather interesting - the college reportedly cuts off power in its hostel for an hour every now and then in a bid to urge students to come out of their rooms and speak to others. The college is also installing new vending machines for free tea and coffee. “Students are meeting increasingly less. This naturally creates a lot of problems as they end up being alone. This small step will help them connect when they take a 10-minute coffee or tea break,” an official was quoted as saying. The latest suicide was reported only a few months ago where a fourth-year student of IIT Kharagpur allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room. Increasing levels of stress and depression are said to be the most common reasons why incidents of student <keyword id="81853" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suicides">suicides</keyword> is rising in IITs. Steps by IIT-KGP A report earlier had stated that IIT Kharagpur had also urged the students to spend quality time under a tree canopy and speak to counsellors that help students deal with psychological disorders. Student evaluation with the assistance of psychiatric professionals is on the cards. 3-credit courses on mental health and wellbeing will also be run from next year. The institute is also planning to start an orientation programme with parents.

<keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword>'s Rekhi Centre of Excellence for the <keyword id="3460674" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Science-of-Happiness">Science of Happiness</keyword> has signed an MoU with Madhya Pradesh government to collaborate on the development of a <keyword id="6363778" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="happiness-index">Happiness Index</keyword> for measuring the well-being of the people of the state. The MoU was signed with <keyword id="232127" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="MP-Government">MP government</keyword>'s 'Rajya Anandam Sansthan' (Department of Happiness) in the presence of MP Chief Minister <keyword id="94770" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shivraj-Singh-Chouhan">Shivraj Singh Chouhan</keyword> and IIT-KGP Director Prof P P Chakrabarti at Bhopal recently, an IIT-KGP press statement. IIT-KGP will develop the index and analyse data collected by the state government to assess the level of happiness and chalk out recommendations that can be used to enhance happiness, the statement said. IIT-KGP will also develop an online screening and assessment system in order to screen and identify suitable volunteers from the database of more than 30,000 people who have offered to be part of the collaborative exercise. "Very good experience with the state and its leadership team, especially the volunteers who do this work without any payment in addition to their normal duties. Looking forward to some very interesting collaboration," the release quoting Prof Chakrabarti said. Satinder Rekhi, the patron of Rekhi Centre of Happiness at IIT Kharagpur, who was present at the MoU sign, agreed to provide funding for a District Happiness Centre for Jabalpur, where he studied 50 years ago, it said. The institute will also develop online courses on happiness through the evaluation system available at the Centre for Educational Technology of IIT-KGP.
