IIT-Kharagpur concluded its first phase of 2021-22 <keyword id="6361907" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="placement" source="Orion">placement</keyword> session in the second week of December, with over 1,600 job offers and 900-plus internship opportunities, a statement issued by the institute said. The season had begun with more than 500 pre-placement offers (PPO), which soon jumped to 1000-plus offers on the second day, "a milestone across all IITs", the statement said on Saturday. The institute recorded 48 offers in the CTC range of Rs 50 lakh to Rs 2.64 crore. Over 45 plus offers came from international companies, the statement said. This year, five foreign students also secured jobs at the session. More than 300 companies participated in the first phase across various sectors, including software, analytics, consulting, core engineering companies, banking and high-frequency trading. Companies that recruited students in the just-concluded session are Airbus, <keyword id="8445586" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="accenture-japan" source="Orion">Accenture Japan</keyword>, Da Vinci Derivatives, Excel, <keyword id="6355629" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="google" source="Orion">Google</keyword>, <keyword id="10387" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="microsoft" source="Orion">Microsoft</keyword>, Qualcomm, Squarepoint Capital, N K Securities, Hindustan Unilever, Tata Steel, among others. The chairman of the institute's Career Development Centre, A <keyword id="247972" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rajakumar" source="Orion">Rajakumar</keyword>, said "strong curriculum of <keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword> KGP and technical skills of students" were reasons behind the grand success. The next phase of the placement session is scheduled to start in the second week of January 2023. More core companies are expected to offer placements and internship opportunities to the students in the second phase, Rajakumar added.

In 2021, it is planning to hire 1,100 engineers and has already made offers to 250 IITians, he said. During this pandemic year also, the company has kept its momentum of hiring from best of the institutes and has introduced its internally built online hiring platform to facilitate 100% remote recruitment, Subrahmanyan said. "The Graduate Engineer Training (GET) programme has several alumni and leaders serving in leadership positions at the company. This signature programme known for its selection rigour has very high aspirational value in the best campuses across the country," added Subrahmanyan. The entire hiring process of L&amp;T is digital and remote, including the testing process which is conducted with the help of remote proctoring tool which monitors the test based on 14 parameters. The platform used for hiring has been developed internally by the company. The company said this hired talent will be put to an internally developed induction program for over three weeks. The programme inducts talent into business and functional aspects of L&amp;T and imparts experiential learning and hands-on technical sessions. This is also an opportunity for these youngsters to interact with the senior leadership of L&amp;T and get acquainted with the strategy and core values of the organisation. Despite pandemic-related challenges, the company kept its commitment and completed over three-week virtual induction process for all freshly hired GETs &amp; PGETs of 2020 batch through digital and remote mode in August 2020, the company said. L&T plans to hire 1,100 engineers in 2021, offers already made to 250 IITians

This year, Vinod Gupta School of Management at <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword> campus, witnessed the highest CTC offer of Rs 20 lakh. The placements showed growth in the number of recruiters, number of offers made and diversity in the roles offered. 
 A total of 40 companies visited the institute and the 2015-2017 batch strength of 82 received 100 offers so far. Companies including Amazon, British Telecommunication, <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>, Vedanta, PwC, Titan, JP Morgan and Chase, <keyword id="6358918" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deloitte">Deloitte</keyword>, Spencer's visited the campus. 
 
As of now, the average of the top 25 per cent offers stands at 16.60 lakh and that of the top 50 per cent is set at Rs. 15.31 lakh. With more companies lined up, these numbers are only expected to increase. 
 
Most of the students secured roles in Operations and Consulting, closely followed by Analytics, Sales Marketing, banking, finance and insurance. 
 
The students of VGSoM were also offered coveted roles on the field of management. This includes the roles in Leadership program in Operations, B2B Sales, Project Management, Supply Chain Management, Sales and Marketing. In addition to these, students were offered roles of Strategic Analysts, Digital Operations Consultants, Financial Analysts, Associate Traders, Pre-Sales Consultants, Wealth Managers, Program Managers and Category Managers.

They have found a way to raise biofuel yield from commonly found aquatic weeds such as water hyacinths. 
 
According to a new study published in Nature Scientific Reports, researchers have shown that this weed — which contains up to 50 percent hemicelluloses — can now be used as an economic and abundant source of biofuel. 
 <keyword id="3921769" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saikat-Chakraborty">Saikat Chakraborty</keyword>, faculty member at the Department of Chemical Engineering and lead researcher of the <keyword id="3925325" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bioenergy-research-group">Bioenergy Research Group</keyword> at <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword> said - “We show that the secret to rapidly producing soluble sugars from amorphous natural polymers such as hemicelluloses lies in their smallest scale-the pores." 
 
The researchers have uncovered the pore-scale phenomena that result in “fourfold increase in the yields of fermentable sugars and bioethanol” from hemicelluloses. 
 
“It turns out that three quarters of the soluble sugars we obtain for generation of bioethanol are produced from the pore-scale reactions. So increasing the polymer’s porosity and degree of swelling will enhance the deconstruction of hemicelluloses from plant cell walls, thus increasing bioethanol,” the authors are quoted as saying, in the study. 
 
Hemicelluloses are the second most abundant natural polymer on earth — after cellulose — and a new technology engendered from this pore-scale phenomena could rapidly produce biofuels from locally available plant sources. 
 
Apart from water-hyacinth, hemicellulose-based bioethanol can also be produced from commonly available grasses, red and green algae, etc., which have 2.5 to 3 times more hemicellulose than cellulose. 
 
Up next is another study where Scientists at the institute’s chemical engineering department and PK Sinha Centre for Bioenergy are working to transform these fundamental insights into new biofuel technologies that would help fight climate change.

As they work towards launching HikeLand — an augmented reality-based based experience that nobody really knows much about — it has opened up around 20 positions to add to their 152-strong staff. And, all the hiring will happen virtually. In addition to looking at freshers from <keyword id="6364832" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword>, IIT Dhanbad, Netaji Subhas University of Technology (NSUT) and some other top tier colleges through its ZeroTo2 program — Hike is also looking to hire people who were laid off during the lockdown in hopes of picking up top talent on the rebound. “We are reaching out to alumni networks, mapping and prioritising high pedigree candidates facing job and salary cuts and are actively accepting requests from organisations looking for outplacement support,” Anshuman Mishra, the VP of Operations at Hike exclusively told Business Insider. The loopholes that candidates will have to jump through in order to get hired “Once a candidate’s profile is shortlisted, we share custom-designed stimulations and assignments — depending on the role they have applied for — with each candidate. We have been using tech tools like Hackerank and in-house developed simulations,” explained Mishra. Each simulation will have a cut-off and the scores will be compared to select the top performers depending on the number of positions available. “We use top percentiles to decide real-time thresholds for cutoffs, so that bar is always high,” said Mishra. Once the top candidates have been selected, they will move to the second stage — interviews. Not just one, but every candidate will have to go through at least four rounds of interviews for Hike to evaluate their competency. The interview stage is followed by one more check that candidates will have to clear — how they fit into the overall culture at Hike. “We introduce the candidates to Hike and assess how well do they align to Hike’s values, DNA and vision,” said Mishra. Some of the roles that they’re looking at include areas like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), and user research over and above the conventional hiring in product, design and marketing. Such cases have been on the rise, especially among IIT aspirants, <keyword id="28443" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-students">IIT students</keyword> and children of IIT faculty members. Earlier this year, a 20-year-old student living at the IIT-B campus and a son of a faculty member, stabbed himself to death after an altercation with his family members. Last year in April, a 17-year-old daughter of a faculty member had taken her life by jumping off a building in the campus. While the administration is still trying hard to deal with this challenge, <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword> has taken a step forward to help students deal with their daily stress. It's compelling students, who are otherwise huddled in their tiny dorms buried under an avalanche of books, to move out of their rooms and mingle with others. How this is being done is rather interesting - the college reportedly cuts off power in its hostel for an hour every now and then in a bid to urge students to come out of their rooms and speak to others. The college is also installing new vending machines for free tea and coffee. “Students are meeting increasingly less. This naturally creates a lot of problems as they end up being alone. This small step will help them connect when they take a 10-minute coffee or tea break,” an official was quoted as saying. The latest suicide was reported only a few months ago where a fourth-year student of IIT Kharagpur allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room. Increasing levels of stress and depression are said to be the most common reasons why incidents of student <keyword id="81853" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suicides">suicides</keyword> is rising in IITs. Steps by IIT-KGP A report earlier had stated that IIT Kharagpur had also urged the students to spend quality time under a tree canopy and speak to counsellors that help students deal with psychological disorders. Student evaluation with the assistance of psychiatric professionals is on the cards. 3-credit courses on mental health and wellbeing will also be run from next year. The institute is also planning to start an orientation programme with parents.

As part of a ‘Summer Study Abroad Programme’ in India, IIT-Kharagpur and <keyword id="197177" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indiana-University">Indiana University</keyword> of Pennsylvania are conducting a study into the effects of climate change on tea production and wetlands in <keyword id="6358045" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Darjeeling">Darjeeling</keyword>. Students from both institutes will visit Makaibari <keyword id="130040" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tea-estate">Tea Estate</keyword> and Darjeeling Tea Research &amp; Development Centre at Kurseong this month as part of their field study. “Through this study, we are taking a look at what the special factors responsible for giving Darjeeling tea its unique muscatel flavour and exquisite banquet are. From environmental perspectives, we will analyse how climate change has been affecting the tea industry. We will also try to look at how tea gardens are evolving or changing their production process in response to this,” said Dr Haimanti Banerjee, principal coordinator of the programme for IIT-Kgp. Banerjee will be heading the project along with Prof Subrata Chattopadhyay, head of DARP. Seven students and two faculty members of IUP have arrived in Kolkata, and a joint one-day workshop was held at American Centre in Kolkata on Monday. “Tea is something that the whole world can relate to, even Starbucks has introduced chai latte to their menu. And when we talk about tea, it is the world-famous Darjeeling tea that comes to the mind. This research will focus on the socio-economic and geographic issues of tea plantations, and how they are impacted by climate change. Darjeeling has been selected as the test-bed for this year,” said Dr Sudeshna Ghosh, IUP’s principal coordinator along with Dr <keyword id="4618513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="brian-okey">Brian Okey</keyword>. “We will also have to collect weather-related data of the region over the past 50 years to understand the extent of climate change, the impact and whether it influences Darjeeling tea’s unique aroma,” Ghosh added.

The MoU was signed with <keyword id="232127" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="MP-Government">MP government</keyword>'s 'Rajya Anandam Sansthan' (Department of Happiness) in the presence of MP Chief Minister <keyword id="94770" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shivraj-Singh-Chouhan">Shivraj Singh Chouhan</keyword> and IIT-KGP Director Prof P P Chakrabarti at Bhopal recently, an IIT-KGP press statement. IIT-KGP will develop the index and analyse data collected by the state government to assess the level of happiness and chalk out recommendations that can be used to enhance happiness, the statement said. IIT-KGP will also develop an online screening and assessment system in order to screen and identify suitable volunteers from the database of more than 30,000 people who have offered to be part of the collaborative exercise. "Very good experience with the state and its leadership team, especially the volunteers who do this work without any payment in addition to their normal duties. Looking forward to some very interesting collaboration," the release quoting Prof Chakrabarti said. Satinder Rekhi, the patron of Rekhi Centre of Happiness at IIT Kharagpur, who was present at the MoU sign, agreed to provide funding for a District Happiness Centre for Jabalpur, where he studied 50 years ago, it said. The institute will also develop online courses on happiness through the evaluation system available at the Centre for Educational Technology of IIT-KGP.
