Hyderabad, July 9 (IANS) Graphics giant Nvidia, here on Thursday, unveiled a technology centre at the Indian Institute of Technology that will accelerate research in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its commercial adoption. The Nvidia AI Technology Centre will help accelerate research by the 220 IIT Hyderabad faculty members. The collaboration between IIT Hyderabad and Nvidia will focus on advancing AI research in the areas of agriculture and smart cities, besides language understanding. The projects to be taken up included increasing crop yield using AI algorithms, applying AI-based solutions to support safer transportation systems and better ways of managing traffic. "The combination of Nvidia's leading-edge technology for AI and some of the finest minds in the country from IIT Hyderabad will bring synergy to help find solutions to uniquely Indian challenges, be it enhancing crop yield or safer cities," said B.S. Murty, Director, IIT Hyderabad. "This will build on the strong AI capabilities of IIT Hyderabad, including the country's first B.Tech in AI programme," he said. IIT Hyderabad, Nvidia team up for AI research centre

Hyderabad, Jul 9 (): Indian Institute of Technology - Hyderabad is collaborating with NVIDIA, a multinational technology company, to establish India's first 'NVIDIA AI Technology Centre' (NVAITC) to accelerate research on Artificial Intelligence and its commercial adoption. IIT - Hyderabad already houses two NVIDIA DGX-1TM systems and an NVIDIA DGX-2TM system dedicated to research being undertaken at the institute, a press release from the engineering institute said on Thursday. The NVAITC will accelerate research for the 220 faculty at IIT Hyderabad, which is already among India's foremost research institutions in just over a decade into its inception. This collaboration between IIT Hyderabad and NVIDIA will focus on advancing AI research in the areas of agriculture and smart cities besides language understanding. The projects that would be taken up include increasing crop yield using AI algorithms and applying AI-based solutions to support safer transportation systems and better ways of managing traffic, among others, the release said. ALS, also known as 'Lou Gehrig's disease' is a neurodegenerative disorder that severely affects voluntary movement of muscles and can lead to paralysis and death. It occurs due to changes in specific genes, which may be triggered by factors such as smoking, exposure to toxins, metals and pesticides, a release fromIITHyderabad said. The results of this research, performed by a team led by faculty from the <keyword id="404483" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="department-of-biotechnology">Department of Biotechnology</keyword>, and Department of Chemistry, IIT Hyderabad, has recently been published in the peer-reviewedInternational Journal of Biological Macromolecules, it said. According to the release, there are no drugs available at present to cure ALS and treatment options are limited to two drugs only for management of the condition. Elaborating on this research, Associate Professor Basant Kumar Patel said,"One of the causes of ALS is the alterations in the genes that code for a critical protein called TDP-43." "The gene alteration modifies the protein, which results in its liquid-liquid phase separation. This phase separation in turn causes the proteins to be deposited on nerve cells, resulting in <keyword id="713645" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Neurodegeneration">neurodegeneration</keyword>," he added. In 2016, Patel and Prof Ganesan Prabushankar of Department of Chemistry found a small molecule called 'AIM4,' which seemed to be better than the other related molecules that have been studied all around the world, in its ability to inhibit abnormal aggregation of TDP-43 in vitro ALS disease model systems, it said. The IITH scientists then proceeded to analyse this molecule and study its action on TDP-43, to predict how it would potentially inhibit the deposition of the protein in nerve cells. "We have shown that AIM4 prevents liquid-liquid phase separation of the modified protein, TDP-43-A315T. By this, AIM4 prevents aggregation of the protein andmay potentially prevent thedeposition on neurons,"Patel added. The IIT Hyderabad research team discovered through computational studies AIM4 has specific binding site on this protein and binding energy calculations have shown that the bond between AIM4 and the mutant protein is energetically favourable, which makes it a promising drug for potential treatment of ALS, the release said. COVID-19 concerns: Don't panic, IIT Hyderabad study tells MF investors

<keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> is looking forward to hire more than 300 engineers from the country’s most prestigious technology institute-Indian Institutes of Technology (<keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword>s) and this will lead to making Samsung the top recruiter from IIT campuses this year. 
 
The leader in mobile phone and electronics manufacturing is leading the race in terms of making maximum offers in at least three Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campuses after the first eight days of final placements this year. 
 A <keyword id="107877" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung-India">Samsung India</keyword> spokesperson confirmed that the company plans on hiring over 300 engineers from the <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> this year for its research and development (R&amp;D) institutes in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword>, Noida and Delhi. 
 
"IITs offer some of the best engineering talent in India, and these young engineers are well-suited to the innovation mindset at Samsung," the person told ET. 
 
Samsung has made the maximum number of offers at IIT Roorkee, IIT Varanasi and Guwahati, handing out 95 offers in these three campuses. 
 At <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword>, it is just behind only <keyword id="45383" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Coal-India">Coal India</keyword>. The company is also hiring aggressively from other top IITs such as Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur and Hyderabad. 
 
"Samsung Bangalore has been the top recruiter at our institute this year with 25 offers," Kaustubha Mohanty, head, centre for career development, IIT Guwahati, told ET. 
 At IIT Roorkee, Samsung made 26 offers, followed by <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> with 23 offers, <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> with 17, <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> with 16, and <keyword id="1960232" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Citicorp-Services-India">Citicorp Services India</keyword> and EXL with 15 offers each. 
 
Another top recruiter this year is outsourcing and analytics service provider EXL, which has alreaddy visited eight IITs, which includes Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Madras, Guwahati, and BHU this year, and made 127 offers, up from 111last year. 
 "Driven by its growth-induced demand, EXL has been consistently increasing its offers at the campuses primarily due to the quality, aptitude and trainability of the candidates. EXL hires primarily for its consultant role from all the above campuses. Placements at IITs started on December 1 and are still ongoing. The first phase of the process will end later this month, only to pick up again in January," <keyword id="1567562" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vivek-Jetley">Vivek Jetley</keyword>, senior vice-president, <keyword id="3937269" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="exl-analytics">EXL Analytics</keyword>, told ET. 
 Power management company Eaton also recruited in good numbers. It made 11 offers at <keyword id="922152" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Hyderabad">IIT Hyderabad</keyword> to emerge the single largest recruiter there while at IIT BHU it made 10 offers.

IIT placements: Samsung India plans to hire over 300 engineers, to emerge as top recruiter this year

Startups are unaffected by getting banned and are recruiting top talent at IIT placements this year. Regardless of the fact that many of the startups are being blacklisted by the institutes, many international companies that have just started in India are providing the students great offers and some big recruiters' individual hiring numbers. 
 Many like <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> are amongst the blacklisted ones, their rival likes <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword> and <keyword id="6357120" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PayTM">Paytm</keyword> are hiring aggressively at several <keyword id="6386086" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Technology">Indian Institutes of Technology</keyword>, and commanding premium slots in placements along with the likes of logistics startup <keyword id="3932850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rivigo-services">Rivigo Services</keyword> and enterprise software developer CodeNation. 
 Amazon is planning to visit 17 <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword> this year and is looking forward to hiring more engineers than last year. It is making its first Jodhpur, Indore and Bhubaneswar IITs. 
 "We firmly believe that as we expand and grow in the country, talented engineers from these institutes will play an instrumental role in driving Amazon's growth in India. We continue to be aggressive in our hiring outlook as we scale up our operations in India,” <keyword id="662878" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raj-Raghavan">Raj Raghavan</keyword>, HR director for APAC at Amazon, told ET. 
 
Paytm, after being benefited by the government’s demonetisation scheme, is now looking forward to increasing its intake from IITs this year. 
 "Paytm is expanding quickly and we are constantly on the lookout for talent to help us keep the momentum,” <keyword id="214729" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amit-Sinha">Amit Sinha</keyword>, senior VP at Paytm, told ET. 
 
The Noida-based ecommerce and digital payments provider has hired from Guwahati, Roorkee, Madras, Bombay and Varanasi (BHU) IITs this year. Besides these biggies, several smaller startups, too, have joined the rush to attract top talent from the country's premier engineering campuses. 
 
"Startups are far from disappearing from the campus. For us, they hold a good share in the placements this year. Where 55 startups have registered for placements this year, up from 50 last year, and they've already handed out more offers than last year,” NP Padhy, professor-in-charge for training and placement at IIT Roorkee, told ET. 
 
There are many new comers in the placement league and the list includes Smartprix, FlyNava Technologies, Clustr, Hike and Buyhatke. 
 
"There are still many startups coming. While most hire in small numbers, they still find takers, especially among students who have a risk appetite,” a senior person involved in IIT placements, told ET. 
 
The IITs also blacklisted a list of startups over a list of numerous reasons. Despite some startups revoking offers in previous years, several students are still eager to join such firms. 
 "Students are now more aware about the uncertainties associated with startups, and more informed. Many are eager to join them, especially those who want to start something of their own in the future and want to gain the experience,” B Venkatesham, placement-in-charge at <keyword id="922152" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Hyderabad">IIT Hyderabad</keyword>, told ET. 
 
Even in campuses where the number of startup recruiters is less than last year, such firms are among the popular recruiters. IIT Madras has given premium slots to companies such as Amazon, Next Education, CodeNation, Rivigo Services and Paytm in the placement process.

Despite getting blacklisted, startups still rock at IIT placements

A team of engineers from Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad has developed <keyword id="576898" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sanitary-napkins">sanitary napkins</keyword> which have greater absorption capacity than commercially available ones and can be safely disposed owing to their biodegradable nature. 
 
Under professor Chandra Shekhar Sharma, faculty, chemical engineering, the team has introduced the use of electrospun cellulose acetate nanofibers as a material for an absorbent core in feminine sanitary napkins. 
 
 
It's benefit is that it eliminates the use of harmful, non-biodegradable SAP from commercially available sanitary napkins without compromising the performance. Instead, it's a better version because it comes with better absorbency and comfort. 
 
The current sanitary napkins contain harmful chemicals that are petroleum-based products and do not degrade readily in landfills. They compromise on the eco-friendly parameters. 
 “Nanofibers based feminine hygiene products (without SAP) provides a safe alternative to female hygiene as we know that prolonged use of commercially available products may even lead to toxic shock syndrome and ovarian cancer,” a statement issued by <keyword id="922152" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Hyderabad">IIT Hyderabad</keyword> said. 
 
The statement noted that menstrual hygiene is an important issue for every woman, as poor menstrual hygiene increases the vulnerability towards reproductive tract infections.

IIT Hyderabad engineers develop eco-friendly sanitary napkins which are far better than all the others out there

Despite research and innovations in the technology space – a sector with wide industry interest and huge investor confidence - being of wide interest in IITs across the country, a few great souls at these premier institutes are more focused on driving social innovations. They aspire to use their ideas to change peoples’ lives.
 Meet Seemanth Chourey – a Masters in Design student at <keyword id="922152" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Hyderabad">IIT Hyderabad</keyword>. On his recent visit to a village in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, this lad identified a major problem with the houses built by the government for the villagers, and why they were not staying inside these houses. 

	He opined that the government housing schemes were using concrete and fly ash bricks – undoubtedly creating strong pucca houses but which also looked very alien to the people who they are meant for. The structures were far from the lifestyle and needs of these traditional villagers who still prefer to stay in bamboo houses over pucca ones.
 

	Chourey was pained to see how the people refused to live in what they called concrete boxes, and would use it for storage purposes than as a safe and secure space for their family. So instead of fly ash bricks, he decided to make a model strong as the government model but using mud bricks and bamboo in walls, ceiling and floor to give it a traditional touch. His project though appreciated widely is still awaiting government’s approval.
 

	Another student Shakti Prasad from this institute has created a Handy Braille Writer that looks like a stapler! It could be of great help to visually impaired students when they want to take notes in class. 
 

	Prasad observed that visually-impaired do not have writing aids to take some quick notes. The available Braille machines are big and can’t be used unless they have a table and a place to sit. So, he decided to develop a product that would be portable and easy to use. “My model has a needle at the top to punch and the bottom can be used to hold the device,” he explains.
 

	Priced at Rs 100, it’s a cheap device that can be used by any kind of visually-challenged person.
 

	Meanwhile, realizing the importance of social innovations, the design department of Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad has been encouraging its students to take up social projects that can make a difference to the society. Several first year students have taken up projects that can elevate the social status of people, and we are expecting crazy good solutions from some of these masterminds in the days to come.

How IIT Hyderabad students are changing the
game through some brilliant innovations

If we rewind around four to five years, there was indeed a difference between old and new IITs and many aspirants would always opt for the older, more established ones with glittering salaries. 
 
But gone are those days as new IITs like Hyderabad, Indore, Ropar, Mandi and Gandhinagar are also getting better job offers and the line is diminishing between old and new IITs. 
 
Many companies including Flipkart, eBay, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra are visiting campuses of newer IITs, which are getting even 100 per cent placements. 
 
There is also a rise in average salaries this year. 
 
"At the undergraduate level, most companies don't differentiate between older and newer IITs in terms of salary. So the average salary we get is comparable to that of the older IITs and our numbers are improving year-on-year," B Venkatesham, faculty-in-charge for training and placement cell at IIT Hyderabad, told ET. 
 
"Since last three years, we have been achieving 100 per cent placements. Also since last two years, the gap is narrowing down every year compared to old IITs," Nirmala Menon, assistant professor at IIT Indore, told ET. 
 
Students have become more optimistic and this upward trend will also attract aspirants to new IITs. 
 
Reportedly, the highest package at IIT Hyderabad to date is Rs 35 lakh. 
 
"We will be hiring around 50 graduate engineers from the new IITs compared to 40 from the old IITs. We are offering roles predominantly in R&amp;D, product development &amp; other critical areas," Rajeshwar Tripathi, chief people officer, auto &amp; farm sector, at M&amp;M, told ET.

Old isn’t gold for these companies. They are thronging newer IITs with better job offers, pay packages

Come January, tourists in Manali will be able to get adrenaline rush riding a giant swing backed by Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has been built by a start up incubated at Indian Institute of Technology (<keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT" source="Orion">IIT</keyword>), Mandi and is claimed to be the first-of-its kind in the world. Founded by four childhood adventure enthusiast friends who are engineers and certified rock climbers and mountaineers, the start up called 'ManaliSwing', has completed its human jump trials and is in process of filing five patents for the concept and design. The team claims it has already been approached by Dubai government to launch the swing in the country and is in conversation with interested agencies in Switzerland too. "We will offer one of the world's most creative and safe giant swing like bungy jumping but instead of going down on rubber bungy cord, here one freefall followed by giant swing on dual dynamic ropes with over 100 possible jump styles allowing one to experience the adrenaline of 70m free fall with AI promising impeccable safety like never before," Utsav Soni, one of the founders, told PTI. "The plan is to launch in Manali on new year. The tourists will have to pay Rs 3,000 for each jump. The cost will include transportation from a certain point and professional photography and videography service," he added. The start up conducted a full-scale trial of 1,000 dummy jumps followed by successful Human Jumps under the special presence of IRATA experts at IIT Hyderabad. "The AI will also help track participants and jump master’s performance across millions of data points and deliver optimized approvals for jumping. Having a really intelligent AI will be an edge for a Jump Master and his team making sure no injury, incident, or causality can happen on the site. For example, AI will not approve the jump if there is anything wrong with the followed jump protocol or international standards. "This will be one of the best intersections of technology, innovation and adventure sport of this decade which has potential to disrupt the whole adventure tourism industry. The good part is that we don’t need to have some special hi-tech cameras and expensive setups to do this. This can be franchised anywhere in the world with an existing standard hi-res CCTV security camera feed,” he added. The team has plans to launch the second similar swing in Goa and then take the technology to other countries. "India, despite been world’s youngest country with 50 per cent population below 25, stands at 96th position in global Adventure Tourism Competitive Index (ATDI) 2020. That too is consistently decreasing since last 4 years. India ranks much lower than its neighbours, Bhutan (14th), and Nepal (67th). Especially, when there is a 178 per cent increase in demand of adventure activity in last 3 years. "Somewhere, India has failed to cultivate the culture of innovation in extreme adventure tourism. It’s Incredible India but not innovative India in terms of adventure tourism compared to its global potential. We already have been approached by Dubai government and talks are on at Switzerland too but plan is to launch in India first," Soni said. The project which was conceptualised five years back was commercially registered last year as a start up. "We approached IIT Mandi with the idea and three months later we were an incorporated company with firs working prototype," he added. As industries face talent shortage in the sector, IITs recently rolled out degree programmes and certifications including a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Artificial Intelligence — providing diverse options in technology courses. IIT Hyderabad has been the first institute in the country to introduce B.Tech in AI technology. This year, the JEE advanced rank for opting AI stood at 478 and closed at 657. Overall, IIT Bangalore and IIT Delhi continue to remain top choices for engineering aspirants. The industry estimates that India has less than 10% of data scientists available globally. Coping with the growing demand Indian IT majors including GE Research, Ericsson and Bosch, for their part, have also been funding various research programs at IITs. The placements "comfortably passed all the previous years' record," the institute said. It crossed the threshold of 1,000 offers in the first five days — including 41 international opportunities.
