The startup fever has now gripped faculty members of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) who are now, independently or collaboratively, coming up with their own ventures and turning entrepreneurs. 
 Faculty members of <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> from across India, including Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur and Hyderabad, are leading the trend. Nineteen startups were only from IIT Madras in 2014-15. 
 An Economic Times report quoted <keyword id="2914509" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ravikrishnan-Elangovan">Ravikrishnan Elangovan</keyword> (33) who joined <keyword id="57604" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi">IIT Delhi</keyword>'s department of biochemical engineering and biotechnology as assistant professor in 2010 where he met Vivekanandan Perumal and Shalini Gupta, both of whom had also joined the institute as faculty members after their post-doctoral degrees from the US. The trio wanted to develop a solution for typhoid diagnosis, for which they put up a proposal with the department of biotechnology in 2013 and got funded. 
 
Faculty forming new companies is an integral part of the academia-entrepreneurship intersection in the US, especially in places like Stanford and MIT. But the trend is slowly gaining momentum here in India as well. 
 
As per the report published in the financial daily, IIT Madras has so far spawned 16 startups that have been founded or co-founded by its faculty members. Thirty of the 89 tech start-ups birthed at the institute have faculty members as founders or minority shareholders.

IIT student innovations empower India's defence sector like never before

New Delhi, June 9 (IANS) Scientists in India and Japan have developed a highly accurate machine tool to help clinicians choose the most effective treatment strategy for patients with glioma brain tumour. A new machine learning approach classifies a common type of brain tumour into low or high grades with almost 98 per cent accuracy, researchers reported in the journal IEEE Access. "Our method outperformed other state-of-the-art approaches for predicting glioma grades from brain MRI scans. This is quite considerable," said study researcher Balasubramanian Raman from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT-R). According to the researchers, gliomas are a common type of brain tumour affecting glial cells, which provide support and insulation for neurons. The treatment varies depending on the tumour's aggressiveness, so it's important to get the diagnosis right for each individual. Radiologists obtain a very large amount of data from MRI scans to reconstruct a 3D image of the scanned tissue. Much of the data available in the MRI scans cannot be detected by the naked eye, such as details related to the tumour shape, texture, or the image's intensity. Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms help extract this data. Medical oncologists have been using this approach, called radiomics, to improve patient diagnoses, but its accuracy still needs to be enhanced. For the current study, Kyoto University's Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS, Japan) bioengineer Ganesh Pandian Namasivayam collaborated with Indian data scientist Raman to develop a machine learning approach that can classify gliomas into low or high grade with 97.54 per cent accuracy. The choice of patient treatment largely depends on being able to determine glioma's grading. The team, including Rahul Kumar, Ankur Gupta and Harkirat Singh Arora, used a dataset from MRI scans belonging to 210 people with high-grade glioma and another 75 with low-grade glioma. They developed an approach called CGHF, which stands for: A computational decision support system for glioma classification using hybrid radiomics and stationary wavelet-based features. They chose specific algorithms for extracting features from some of the MRI scans and then trained another predictive algorithm to process this data and classify the gliomas. They then tested their model on the rest of the MRI scans to assess its accuracy. The method outperformed other approaches for predicting glioma grades from brain MRI scans. "We hope AI helps develop a semi-automatic or automatic machine predictive software model that can help doctors, radiologists, and other medical practitioners tailor the best approaches for their individual patients," Ganesh said. --IANS bu/arm

The Human Resource and Development Ministry (MHRD) of India will also award the ‘Prize of Encouragement of,’ $2,000 each to six teams for ideas with potential. “The Singapore India Hackathon, an initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is the first of its kind joint <keyword id="6001248" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-hackathon">international hackathon</keyword> between India and any other country. It aims to promote engagement and collaboration of student community in India with the rest of the world and to develop innovative and out-of-the-box solutions for the daunting problems faced by our societies,” said R Subrahmanyam, Secretary of the Department of Higher Education. IIT Madras to host Singapore India Hackathon in the presence of PM Modi

This is purely a case of ‘once bitten, twice shy’. Learning from last year’s fiasco, India’s top engineering schools now prefer PSUs during campus placements than startups. 
 
As many startups deferred joining dates and some even cancelled the joining leaving students high and dry last year, engineering colleges this year are taking no chance. 
 The Indian Institutes of Technology (<keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword>) are preferring Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) early placement slots this year, even Day 1. 
 
As per reports, the IITs are also trying to get in touch with ministry of human resource development to ask Maharatna and Navratna companies, such as Oil and Natural Gas Corp, Indian Oil Corp, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, NMDC and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, to participate in campus placement this year. 
 "Until last year, we could not bring in PSUs and also many students were opting for startups. Our experience with the startups was not all good last year. This year, we want to bring in PSUs in the first week itself so that students get a chance to opt for stable jobs rather than pick up lucrative offers in startups," Debasis Deb, chairman of the career development centre at <keyword id="6364832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Kharagpur">IIT Kharagpur</keyword>, told ET. 
 Last year, <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>’s fiasco and mismanagement by other companies like Peppertap, Zomato, Roadrunnr and Stayzilla resulted in massive disappointment. 
 The <keyword id="3656301" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="all-iits-placement-committee">All-IITs Placement Committee</keyword> recently blacklisted 30 companies, including startups, which went back on job offers. 
 
ET reported the IITs at Kharagpur, Roorkee, Bombay and Guwahati plan to offer PSUs Day 1. 
 
Kaustubha Mohanty of IIT Guwahati told ET, “We are leaving no stone unturned this year in inviting the PSUs. We are requesting them to come in the first week of December." 
 
Talking about salaries, even though PSUs will not offer stock options to candidates, the annual salaries offered will be of nearly Rs 10 lakh, about one-third of what is generally offered by Day 1 companies. 
 
In boom years, Day 1 firms have even offered upwards of Rs 40-50 lakh for top candidates. 
 
Anishya Madan, industrial liaison officer at IIT Delhi's training and placement cell, told ET, “It is not about the salaries alone, it is also about stability. We want students to get enough choice, especially in terms of working with core companies. With the ban lifted on PSUs coming to IITs, we are trying our best to give them a healthy mix from Day 1 itself.”

IITs are ditching startups, preferring PSUs during campus placements this year

IIT-Bombay sources informed ET that engineering companies like <keyword id="6357147" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Steel">Tata Steel</keyword>, General Electric, Sony Japan and a few others have now been given slots on Day 1 of the placement season after the ministry of human resource development (MHRD) nudged IITs to do this to bolster the central government's '<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>'. Traditionally consulting, finance, technology and <keyword id="2499420" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ecommerce-companies">ecommerce companies</keyword> form majority of the companies that come on Day 1. Last year, a few offered salaries as high as Rs 1 crore. 

	Interestingly, IIT-Bombay is the only institute to have obliged the government. Sources at IIT-Kharagpur and Delhi told ET that the institutes are not giving any such preferential treatment to any company. IIT-Madras is moving up core companies by several days in the placement schedule, but is not giving a Day 1 slot to any engineering company. IIT placements kick off on December 1. 
 

	IIT-Bombay will see a total of 110 core engineering companies this placement season, a jump of 40 per cent from last year. The institute received about 190 job announcement forms from the core engineering space, compared to only 110 last year.
 

	A senior MHRD official confirmed that the government is encouraging the leading IITs to take "relevant measures" to push the Make in India campaign. "This is the need of the hour for the country," the official, who did not wish to be named, said. 
 "I am a beneficiary of talent from the IIT-Bombay," Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, chairman of <keyword id="213947" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Biocon-Limited">Biocon Limited</keyword> and the current chairperson of IIM-Bangalore said. "During my days of developing bio-manufacturing, we had a large team of engineers from <keyword id="61708" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT Bombay</keyword>." Nobody can be forced to support the Make in India campaign, but all IITs would gain from it, she added. She continues to pick fresh talent from IITs even today for the company. 

	"Earlier, consulting firms used to take up most of the slots in the early days of the placement. But now as a conscious effort, we are pushing for core engineering firms, partly due to the students' preferences," an IIT-Bombay placement faculty said. 
 

	According to sources in the placement cell, the institute is not choosing Day 1 companies based on salaries offered. Going forward too, the institute intends to strengthen its focus on the core engineering companies, the source added. The institute wants to give a balanced choice to students in terms of offering equal importance to firms from consulting, finance, banking, technology and core engineering.
 

	"This will give the students a lot of choice as there are a few students who prefer good profiles in core companies to hefty salaries in non-core companies," a student at IIT-Bombay said.

IIT Bombay favours manufacturing recruiters in placement season to bolster Modi's 'Make In India'

In the list of annual honours, released by the <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> this year, you will find the name of Dr Balram Bhargava from the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). He has been awarded the Padma Shri. 
 
Every year, thousands of students aspiring for a career in medicine have AIIMS at the top of their priority list. Studying there is almost a sure-fire guarantee to a glittering career in medicine and often a pathway to the foreign shores. 
 
However, Dr Bhargava and others are now focusing on the concept of frugal innovation (now the subject of academic books) and using it to create a new family of low-cost, high-impact medical devices right here in India. 
 In Dr Bhargava’s case, his team is developing a chest compression device that helps treat cases of sudden cardiac arrest. Funded by the <keyword id="232223" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Wellcome-Trust">Wellcome Trust</keyword> of the UK, the device is currently in prototype stage. But given the increasing cost of production in the West, it is quite likely that mass-scale production (as and when it begins) will only start in countries like India and China. 
 Dr Bhargava is no stranger to innovation or foreign collaborations, though. Earlier, he had established the Center for Excellence for Stem Cell Studies where a lot of work has been done to cater to the patients suffering from dilated <keyword id="836702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="cardiomyopathy">cardiomyopathy</keyword> – a world’s first in terms of treatment. He is also an executive director with the Stanford-India Biodesign Program, a joint venture between Stanford University, AIIMS and the IIT-Delhi, designed to promote medical innovations through shared expertise. 
 
That’s just one model of innovation, driven by a multi-agency collaboration approach. Going the garage start-up route is Mumbai-based medical devices firm Biosense, which last year secured $500,000 in seed funding from multiple investors. Its first product is ToucHb – a device that can screen for anaemia without using a needle to draw blood from the patient. In a country where nearly 52% of women are anaemic and childbirth problems due to this condition often turn out to serious, such devices can literally save lives. 
 
Since then, the company has introduced a smartphone-based diagnostic system called uChek that does urine analysis. This analysis can be used to treat a variety of ailments, including the 60 million or so Indians suffering from diabetes. Another device to test sugar levels, using the blood drawn from a patient, has also been rolled out recently. It is called SüChek. 
 
Ironically, India has not been a stranger to innovations in terms of health technology. The introduction of the now world-renowned Jaipur Foot almost four decades ago has amply proved what creative solutions, applied to Indian conditions, could do to benefit the world. However, the non-profit model behind such innovations has also exposed the weakness of this approach. 
 Companies like <keyword id="2243396" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="GE-Medical">GE Medical</keyword> and <keyword id="327914" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Philips-Healthcare">Philips Healthcare</keyword>, which have leveraged India’s pool of skilled human resources, have reaped the big bucks by successfully commercialising technology at an industrial scale. However, the vast majority of Indians still cannot leverage the benefits of their expensive products. 
 What India needs is a marriage of frugal innovation techniques, relevant to Indian needs, with a Western-style focus on scale and profitability. Start-ups like Forus Health, founded by Dr Shyam Vasudeva Rao, former head of technology at <keyword id="49855" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="philips">Philips</keyword> Healthcare’s India operations, might just be what the doctor ordered. 
 
India has a shockingly disproportionate number of visually impaired people, 12 million at the last count. In fact, one-fourth of the world’s visually challenged population lives in this country. Worse still, 80% of these people could have retained their eyesight, had they had timely medical attention. In a country with a 1:60,000 doctor-patient ratio, it is easy to understand where the problem lies. 
 
Forus’ solution called 3nethra is an ophthalmology device that is both portable and inexpensive, making it ideal for rural areas where the bulk of these cases occur. As highly trained ophthalmologists are in short supply in those areas, the device supports telemedicine interventions and provides automated reports for up to five common eyesight ailments. 
 
That India is unable to provide high quality healthcare to millions is not a unique issue. This is exactly why China has been an early adopter of 3nethra, giving some indication of the global market for such innovations. 
 
With such a compelling business proposition, Forus has no dearth of investors. Top VC firms like Accel Partners and IDG Ventures have backed the Bangalore-based company, and a Series B round of investment was also completed earlier this year. 
 
Such innovations, while costing a fraction of the competition, are cutting-edge ones; so low-cost innovations should not necessarily be interpreted as low-tech. In addition, it not only showcases India as a low-cost manufacturing destination but also as a premier location for high-end research, design and product development. 
 
Now, with the right addition of entrepreneurial dosage, India’s health sector may go from strength to strength.
