A newly-developed air filter supported by special grants from <keyword id="1707932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Science-and-Engineering-Research-Board" source="Orion">Science and Engineering Research Board</keyword> (SERB) can deactivate the germs, '<keyword id="2215621" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="self-cleaning" source="Orion">self-cleaning</keyword>' them out of the system, using ingredients commonly found in green tea. A research team led by Suryasarathi Bose and Kaushik Chatterjee at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, developed <keyword id="15812341" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="germ-destroying-air-filters" source="Orion">germ-destroying air filters</keyword> that can inactivate germs using ingredients like polyphenols and polycationic polymers commonly found in green tea. These 'green' ingredients rupture the microbes through site-specific binding. Impure air might make our life shorter to the extent that Indians lose 5-10 years of their lives because of air-borne contaminants leading to respiratory diseases, adversely affecting physical health as well as mental health, according to a report by University of Chicago. The research was supported by special grants from SERB during the challenging Covid-19 pandemic and SERB-Technology Translation Awards (SERB-TETRA) funds and a patent has been filed on this. Over continuous usage, the existing air filters become a breeding ground for captured germs. The growth of these germs clog the pores of the filter, reducing the life of the filters. Resuspension of these germs can infect people in the vicinity. The novel anti-microbial air filters were tested at the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories and were found to deactivate SARS-CoV-2 (delta variant) with an efficiency of 99.24 per cent. This technology was transferred to AiRTH, a startup that is replacing the existing germ-growing air filters with germ-destroying air filters for commercialisation, said the Ministry of Science and Technology on Saturday. As this innovation holds promise to develop antimicrobial filters that can prevent endemics caused by air-borne pathogens, a patent was granted in 2022. These novel antimicrobial filters in our ACs, central ducts and air purifiers can play a crucial role in our fight against air pollution and mitigate the spread of air-borne pathogens like coronaviruses. IISc research team develops germ-destroying air filters

IISc is now the world's second best research institute: QS University Rankings

Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi have made it to the top 200 in QS World University Rankings 2017. 
 
IISc is placed in the 152th position while IIT Delhi secured 185th rank. Other IITs like, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharaqpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati are included in the top 500 in the rankings. 
 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, <keyword id="101399" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford-University">Stanford University</keyword>, <keyword id="97117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harvard-University">Harvard University</keyword>, University of Cambridge and California Institute of Technology gained top five positions in the rankings. 
 In Engineering and Technology Degrees subject category, India is represented by 6 institutes in top 150 with five IITs and IISc. In top 50 Asian universities, five Indian institutes are listed in which IISc ranked 33 and rest are IITs (IIB, IITD, IITM and IITK). In Arts and Humanities subject category, DU is placed in 210th position with <keyword id="6360386" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jawaharlal-Nehru">Jawaharlal Nehru</keyword> University (JNU) in 247th position. In Social sciences, DU and JNU are in Top 400. 
 The <keyword id="2075863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="QS-World-University-Rankings-by-Subject">QS World University Rankings by Subject</keyword> ranks the world's top universities in individual subject areas, covering 46 subjects as of 2017. The rankings aim to help prospective students identify the world's leading schools in their chosen field, with the list of subjects extended each year in response to high demand for subject-level comparisons. 
 
GS ranking use four components which are combined to produce the results for each of the subject rankings, with weightings adapted for each discipline: Academic reputation, Employer reputation, Research citations per paper, H-index.

Though, no Indian institute has yet broken into the top 200, IISc holds a rank in the 201-250 band. The last time around it was in the band of 251-300. Beside IISc, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Institute+of+Technology+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Institute of Technology </a>(<keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword>) <keyword id="6356654" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bombay">Bombay</keyword> also made it in the top 400. 	 "India has four new entries in the top 800, the country's strong performance is partly thanks to the country recognizing the importance of participating in global benchmarking exercises; just last month the government launched a new funding-backed project aimed at catapulting <keyword id="6386086" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institutes-of-Technology">Indian Institutes of Technology</keyword> to the top of world university rankings, " said Phil Baty, editor of <keyword id="1161482" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Times-Higher-Education-World-University-Rankings">Times Higher Education World University Rankings</keyword> in a statement. 
	 "The government's focus on improving India's standing in global rankings - and even the introduction of the India-specific rankings - has started to yield results. Going forward, there needs to be discussions between ministries to facilitate free flow of students and faculty “Rohin <keyword id="53" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kapoor">Kapoor</keyword>, director at <keyword id="6358918" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deloitte">Deloitte</keyword> in India, told ET.”Once internationalization and globalization happens, India's rankings will improve significantly. This is one of the critical areas where India is lagging behind," Kapoor further added. 
	 This year Times <keyword id="3676089" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-education-world-university-rankings">Higher Education World University Rankings</keyword> expanded their rankings to 980 as compared to 800 last year. Institutes ranked in the 801+ bandare Acharya Nagarjuna University, Amity University, Amrita University, <keyword id="6386394" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-University">Andhra University</keyword>, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Manipal University, Osmania University, SASTRA University, Sathyabama University, SRM University and Vellore Institute of Technology. 
	 
	 Amrita University and Andhra University slipped down to the 801+ group. However, on the brighter side NIT Rourkela, Sri Venkateswara University, TIFR and Tezpur University made their way in the top 800 list. 
	 “This year's expanded list is a testimony to how competitive global <keyword id="6375224" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="higher-education">higher education</keyword> has become. The 980 universities come from 79 different countries,” <keyword id="3660284" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="batty">Batty</keyword> told ET. 
	 US for the first time in 12 years lost the first rank in the list with <keyword id="150557" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Oxford">University of Oxford</keyword> becoming the world's top university. Others in the top five include California Institute of Technology, <keyword id="101399" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford-University">Stanford University</keyword>, University of Cambridge and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

33 Indian varsities have made it to the Times Higher Education’s list of top 300 Asian University Rankings 2017. 
 Bengaluru’s <keyword id="75850" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Science">Indian Institute of Science</keyword> led the country’s universities – retaining its 27th spot – while the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (42) and private institute in Chennai Veltech University (43) both feature in the top 50. 
 
Also, India is the third most-represented nation in the list. This year, it has more than twice the number of names than the 16 featured in the 2016 list of top 200 universities. 
 
“It is great news that India has more than doubled its representation in this year’s ranking,” editor of the UK-based magazine Phil Baty said. 
 The rankings were topped by <keyword id="6356662" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Singapore">Singapore</keyword>’s <keyword id="208717" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-University">National University</keyword>, followed by China’s Peking University. Five other Chinese varsities made it to the top 20. Hong Kong and South Korea have five institutes each in the top 20. Japan has only two in the first 20, but 69 among the top 300. 
 
While IISc-Bangalore maintained its ranking at the 27th position, IIT-Kanpur jumped several notches from the 101-110 band to rank 63. 
 
IIT-Delhi (54) and IIT-Madras (62) also made to the top 100. India’s performance improved because the universities took part in global benchmarking exercises. 
 
“Last year, the Indian government launched a new funding-backed project aimed at catapulting IITs to the top of world university rankings,” said Baty. 
 Like India, Pakistan tripled its representation from that last year. In 2016, it had only two universities in the list, while it has seven this year. Sri Lanka’s <keyword id="324705" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Colombo">University of Colombo</keyword> also featured in the list for the first time.

IITs and IISc among the top 100 of Asia's 300 Best Universities

The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=central+government+">central government</a> is planning to improve the rankings of Indian institutes so that they can find place in the list of top 100 global institutions. It will select 10 <keyword id="6375224" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-education">higher education</keyword> institutes with such potential and fund them for the next four years. 
 
In this regard, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=HRD+ministry+">HRD ministry</a> has selected a list of 8-10 top institutes that have the potential to perform much better. These institutes will be granted funds — ranging from Rs 100-500 crore for the next 3-4 years so that they can create world class research infrastructure and laboratories. 
 The government has identified some of the institutes, including <keyword id="57604" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi">IIT Delhi</keyword>, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati and Indian Institute of Science and Bangalore. The idea is to incentivize institutes that perform well enough to compete at the global level. 
 
Presently, there is not a single Indian institute among the top 100 or 200 on international rankings. However, this year IIT Delhi and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IISc+Bangalore+">IISc Bangalore</a> finally found place among top 200 on the QS rankings. 
 
The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IISc+Bangalore+">Modi government</a> is planning to pump in substantial funds in 10 top Indian institutes so that they can climb up in the global list. The <keyword id="51613" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hrd-ministry">HRD ministry</keyword> is moving the plan as a key part of its budget proposal.

Govt to fund top 10 Indian institutes to help them find place among top 100 on global academic rankings

<keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword> has been picked as India's best engineering college by Smriti Irani's Ministry of Human Resource and Development. 
 
The announcement was made on Monday under National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) – a first-of-its-kind indigenous ranking framework for higher education institutions. 
 
IIT Madras topped the list followed by IIT Mumbai and IIT Kharagpur. 
 <keyword id="60501" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM-Bangalore">IIM Bangalore</keyword> was declared the best management institute followed by IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta as the first and second runner up respectively. 
 
The top 3 in Pharmacy were announced in this order: MCOPS (Manipal), UIPS (Chandigarh) and Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi as the top 3 in this segment. 
 Then came the top 3 in Universities Category where IISc Bangalore topped the list followed by Institute of Chemical Technology and <keyword id="6356383" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="JNU">JNU</keyword> ranked third. 
 The report by Smriti Irani's department - <keyword id="3309858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Rankings-2016">India Rankings 2016</keyword> - seeks to "empower students and parents" while creating healthy competition among educational institutes, the ministry said. 
 
The rankings -which cover government and private institutions -have been released ahead of the next academic year which starts in the summer for college students.

The Indian govt says IIT Madras and IIM Bangalore are India's best colleges

The announcement was made on Monday by the Ministry of Education at an event at the Bharat Mandapam in the national capital that was presided by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Indian Institute of Technology Madras was ranked first in the <keyword id="22759868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIRF-rankings" source="keywords">NIRF rankings</keyword> 2024 and it is the 6th time that it has bagged the top spot in NIRF ranking. IIT-Madras has also been ranked as the best engineering college for the past nine years. In the management category, IIM-Ahmedabad and Bangalore and Calcutta are among the top five. IIT Madras ranked best higher educational institution in India

<ul><li>GATE entrance test is for undergraduates who wish to pursue Master’s or Doctoral in engineering and science in India.</li><li>September 24 is the last date for online registration for the <keyword id="559489" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gate-exam" source="Orion">GATE exam</keyword>. A late fine of ₹500 would be charged if a candidate registers after 24 September.</li><li>The dates of examination are February 5,6,12 and 13 in 2022. This may be subject to change if forced by the pandemic or related situation.</li></ul>Today, i.e September 24 is the last date for online registration for the GATE exam. The last date for submitting the online application is October 1 with a late fee. Also, candidates can rectify any error made in the application form till November 1. Note: A late fine of ₹500 would be charged if a candidate registers after 24 September. The Graduate aptitude test in engineering (GATE) entrance test is for undergraduates who wish to pursue Master’s or Doctoral in engineering and science in India. The marks scored in GATE are also used by some Public Sector Undertaking (PSUs) for recruitment. The dates of examination are February 5,6,12 and 13 in 2022. A National Research Foundation (NRF) will be set up for invigorating innovation and research under recently released Nation Education Policy (NEP)," he said. The minister said this year, the category of women only higher educational institutions was introduced to encourage women and bringing gender parity in the areas of innovation and entrepreneurship.
