This comes as the Higher Education Department of J&amp;K signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) to boost employability in the region. IITs and IISERs provide internships to 500 science students from Jammu & Kashmir

And, the team got it right. The computer-model that team had built, was in line with the major features of the actual eclipse. The model by IISER researchers can now be used to predict the shape of the Sun's corona beforehand, <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/science/larger-features-of-total-solar-eclipse-match-iiser-kolkatas-prediction/article28304990.ece">reported The Hindu. </a> The Weather in Space The teams had predicted a model of the Sun’s atmosphere. According to reports, this model can also be used to predict the weather in space, and check its impact on astronauts and earth among others. Indians were not able to enjoy the total <keyword id="6699518" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="solar-eclipse">solar eclipse</keyword>. The eclipse was visible in South Pacific region and some parts of South America, said The Weather Channel. “We now know the basic theoretical premise of our computational modelling is correct. This work has given us confidence to utilise similar theoretical models for supporting the interpretation of data from India's Aditya-L1 solar space mission which is currently under development,” says Prof. Nandi, who was a part of the team. The team predicted two petal like formation on either side of the corona along with extended plume like structure — that would be stretched in the solar system from their tips. The prediction was done through a two-step process. The first step was to predict the form of Sun’s surface magnetic field on the day of eclipse. Further, the second step was to reveal the structure of Corona using another model.

Neutralising antibody responses against the SARS-COV-2 virus and its variants of concern (VoC) are higher among <keyword id="9617748" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="covishield" source="Orion">Covishield</keyword> recipients than those who took the indigenously made <keyword id="9485939" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="covaxin" source="Orion">Covaxin</keyword>, according to a multi-centre study. The yet-to-be peer-reviewed study, posted on the preprint server MedRxiv on Friday, also found that when compared to the pre-vaccination baseline, both vaccines elicited statistically significant antibody levels in both seronegative individuals and seropositive or those who had recovered from COVID-19 infection. Between June 2021 and January 2022, the researchers enrolled 691 participants in the 18-45 age group across four sites in urban and rural Bengaluru and <keyword id="2094" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pune" source="Orion">Pune</keyword>. Participants received either two doses of Covaxin at 28 days apart or two doses of Covishield at three months apart. The <keyword id="1609796" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="omicron" source="Orion">Omicron</keyword> wave in early 2022 overlapped with the second dose of vaccine in two sites and with both doses in one site. Participants were sampled at six timepoints for antibody analyses and at four timepoints for cellular analyses. When compared to pre-vaccination baseline, both vaccines elicited statistically significant antibody levels in both seronegative and seropositive individuals, the researchers found. Covishield elicited immune responses of higher magnitude and breadth than Covaxin in both seronegative individuals and seropositive individuals, across cohorts representing the pre-vaccination immune history of the majority of the vaccinated Indian population. Immunologist Vineeta Bal noted that in young adult population there is a difference in the response to COVID vaccines, if individuals are already infected with SARS-CoV-2 and recovered (seropositives) versus not infected. "In seronegatives, two doses of Covishield lead to higher magnitude of antibody levels in higher proportion of vaccine recipients as compared to Covaxin recipients," Bal, from <keyword id="101852" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="indian-institute-of-science-education-and-research" source="Orion">Indian Institute of Science Education and Research</keyword> (IISER), Pune and one of the study authors, told PTI. "In terms of waning of immune response with time also Covishield vaccinated individuals retain antibodies in their blood for longer period in larger proportion of individuals,” she said. The study does not directly look for or document protection from COVID-19 in the recipients. "Levels of neutralising antibodies as well as T cell responses, according to different investigators, are indirect indicators of protection,” Bal said. "The interim results so far show that Covishield vaccination induces robust neutralising antibodies against the original SARS-CoV2; Covaxin also does it but somewhat less efficiently,” she added. "Against later variants of the virus such as Delta and Omicron, especially Omicron, neutralising antibodies triggered by Covishield are not as effective, however, they appear marginally better than in Covaxin recipients," Bal added. Prior studies comparing Covishield and Covaxin were limited to addressing only antibody responses and in particular in the health care worker population who were immunised prior to the Delta wave. There is, however, limited data on cellular immune responses elicited by these vaccines and no direct head to-head comparisons or stratification by pre-vaccination serostatus. Vaccination following exposure to the Delta or Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2 is likely to affect the quality, quantity and duration of immune responses. For determining future COVID-19 vaccination policy when pan-coronavirus or sarbecovirus vaccines become available, it becomes important to take into account pre-vaccination immune history of the majority of the vaccinated Indian population. "Some unpublished work from other investigators in India seems to suggest that heterologous boosting i.e. Covaxin in Covishield recipients and vice versa works better than homologous boosting," Bal added.

Blood samples were collected between July 20 and August 5. The survey also indicated a higher prevalence of sero-positivity in users of shared toilets (62.3 per cent) compared to users of independent toilets (45.3 per cent). "We found the presence of IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. This indicates past infection but does not necessarily suggest immunity from subsequent infection," he said. A filing by the company for its patent application for the coronavirus vaccine using the revolutionary RNA technique listed Pune-educated <keyword id="12503074" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bioinformatics-scientist-Mihir-Metkar" source="Orion">bioinformatics scientist Mihir Metkar</keyword> as the "first named inventor", a designation that usually recognises the primary contributor to the invention. He is also listed as one of the inventors in two other Covid-19 vaccine patent applications by Moderna to the US Patent Office. Moderna's is of the new class of vaccines that use what is called messenger RNA (mRNA) that cause the body to create some proteins similar to that in the Covid-19 virus and trigger the body's immune system to make antibodies that will fight the coronavirus if it invades the body. (Conventional vaccines use either dead viruses or parts of them or a modified version of the gene of a different virus.) Metkar's identification as the "first named inventor" is in the document filed by Moderna to dispute the US government's National Institutes of Health (NIH) assertion that its scientists should also be credited as inventors of the vaccine, which was developed in collaboration with it and with $1.53 billion provided by the administration of former President Donald Trump under the Operation Warp Speed programme to quickly produce vaccines. Vladimir Presnyak and Guillaume Stewart-Jones are listed after him in the original application for the patent. Metkar received his MSc degree from the Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology at the Savitribai Phule Pune University and worked at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in Pune as a project assistant before coming to the United States, according to his LinkedIn profile. He did his PhD at the RNA Therapeutics Institute at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester and worked there as a post-doctoral fellow, before joining Moderna in 2018, the profile said. In a separate patent filing, Moderna listed Sunny Himansu, who has an MBBS degree, as one of the two inventors of the Betacoronavirus Vaccine. Moderna's vaccine is one of the two main vaccines in the US and about 164 million doses of it have been given so far in the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control. In addition, millions of people have been vaccinated in Europe and elsewhere with the Moderna vaccine. The other main vaccine used in the US is the Pfizer-Biontech, which was developed in Germany and uses mRNA. A third vaccine from Johson &amp; Johnson is also used in the US. It was developed by J&amp;J's Jansen Pharmaceutical, whose global head of research and development is Mathai Mammen. The patent document naming Metkar as the "first named inventor" was filed on behalf of Moderna by an intellectual property law firm asserted that the three NIH scientists who collaborated with them should not be considered co-inventors as the NIH has asked. If the NIH scientists are recognised as co-inventors, the NIH and the government may be entitled to receive a share of royalties from the use of the patents and also be able to allow others to make the vaccine. An NGO, Public Citizen, has pointed out in a letter to the head of the NIH that co-ownership of the patent "can empower the US government to authorise" other manufacturers around the world to use some of the patents to make the vaccine. The group said that with "huge gaps in global vaccine access" the need for the government to exercise control over the vaccine technology "only grows more urgent". Indian origin scientist named as the primary contributor to invention of Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine

New Delhi, <keyword id="2977717" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="solar-winds">Solar winds</keyword> may have led to <keyword id="47638" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mars">Mars</keyword> losing its <keyword id="6366415" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="atmosphere">atmosphere</keyword>, according to a computer simulation <keyword id="6355244" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="study">study</keyword> which confirms the long held belief that planets need a protective magnetic field to block such harmful radiations in order to sustain life. While factors like the existence of a moderately warm, moist atmosphere and liquid water determine whether a planet can host life, the study, published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, noted that the ability of planets to generate magnetic fields around them is an overlooked aspect. According to the scientists, Arnab Basak and Dibyendu Nandi from the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata, these magnetic fields enveloping planets can act like a protective umbrella, shielding the atmosphere from the super fast plasma winds of the <keyword id="24879" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sun">Sun</keyword>. On the Earth, they said a geo-dynamo mechanism generates the planet's protective magnetosphere -- an invisible shield that stops the <keyword id="45681" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Solar">solar</keyword> wind from eroding away our atmosphere. In the current study, the scientists simulated two scenarios of the <keyword id="6385434" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="red-planet">Red Planet</keyword> -- one considering a young Mars with its magnetosphere intact, and the other with the planet without this force field. The simulations revealed that in the young Mars, the magnetosphere may have acted as a shield stopping the solar wind from coming too close to the planet's atmosphere thus protecting it. Without an intrinsic magnetosphere, the researchers said the solar wind magnetic field may have first draped around, and slipped past Mars, carrying bits of the planet's atmosphere away, eventually eroding it completely. They said the findings confirm the belief that the magnetospheres around planets play a crucial role in determining their ability to sustain life. Alternatively, planets that lose their magnetic field eventually become inhospitable with loss of their atmosphere, the scientists added. According to the QS World Rankings 2020, IISc was ranked second in the university rankings, globally, for its research facilities. Nonetheless, the scenario is changing now,” Internshala report said, which was first published in ET. However, the report also highlights that, of the 3.5 million students enrolling in internships, less than 10% are in arts, commerce and business administration. This is despite the fact that as many as 62% of the Indian students fall in the category of non-technical undergraduates, as per AISHE report released by the Indian government last year. This may be due to lack of awareness among the students, especially from the arts background, which enrolls a large chunk of non-technical students. But the opportunities are highly unexplored in the domain. “Undergraduate students from a non-tech background form the largest share of the tertiary student population and most of these students are based out of tier 2 and 3 cities. However, the lack of awareness about career opportunities is an alarming factor and can contribute heavily to unemployment. With increasing awareness about internships, the students will have a wider career avenue especially in the corporate and the startup ecosystems,” Sarvesh Agrawal, founder of Internshala <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/only-9-5-non-technical-students-among-internship-seekers-survey/articleshow/74435578.cms?from=mdr">told</a> The Economic Times.

The last date to apply for the four year fellowship is April 15, 2020. The students from Indian universities who have a major in computer science or related fields are eligible to <a href="https://cseduapplication.withgoogle.com/applications/phdfellowshipafrica2020/create-application/edit">apply</a>. What it entails? The fellowship students will research on a wide range of topics like mobile computing, machine learning, human-computer interaction, system and networking, natural language processing and others. The students who are recognised as Google researchers are eligible for a monetary award or stipend. In addition, Google extends funding to the universities of the selected candidates for student expenses including travel and research related activities. The total fund cover is $50,000 (₹3.6 million). The selected student is alloted a Google Research Mentor during the programme. These students can also opt for an internship in the company. However, that completely depends on the performance. “There will not be any employee relationship (except as an intern) between fellowship recipients and Google,” the company clarified. In some cases, the fellowship recipients are eligible for scholarships like Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship, Google Scholarship for Students with Disabilities. Who can apply? While in countries like New Zealand, Australia and the United States, only the universities can nominate the students for the Google programme, it is also open for direct submissions in India. Students pursuing undergraduate, masters or professionals can apply to the fellowship. This includes graduates pursuing PhD from any Indian universities and those who are currently in their first year of a part-time PhD programme and transferring to full-time positions. While the students in the UG and PG courses should be full-time students at the university. In case of employed professionals, they should be affiliated to a recognised Indian organisation. However, “the receipt of the award is contingent on them joining a full-time PhD programme at an Indian university within the calendar year of the award,” Google said. This excludes the employees of Google and their spouses and children. Document checklist <ul><li>To complete the application process, the applicants must have their resume along with links to websites and publications. </li><li>Marksheets from their bachelor’s degree to the highest qualification so far.</li><li>Research proposal</li><li>At least two letters of recommendation from research advisors or those familiar with their work. </li><li>A 350 word essay response on — “Describe the desired impact your research will make on the field and society, and why this is important to you. Include any personal, educational and/or professional experiences that have motivated your research interests.”</li></ul>Evaluation process The applicants are shortlisted on the basis of their research proposal, research impact, student academic achievements, and leadership potential. This includes assessment of innovative concepts in the research, impact and direction of work. The research should align with <a href="https://www.blog.google/technology/ai/ai-principles/">Google AI Principles</a>. The applications start in February every year and the candidates are shortlisted by July. Google PhD fellowship programme: Indian students can apply by April 15, here's how

The faculty and staffers across higher education institutes and universities might see a 15% hike in their salaries being approved by Guru Purnima (July 9). The hike, which has been proposed by the Human Resource Development ministry, would be applicable from January 1, 2016 if approved by the cabinet. The number of such faculty and staff across all Central and state universities as well as the Centrally funded technical institutes, including IITs, IIMs, NITs, IISERs is around eight lakh. This change would cost the government Rs 75,000 crore over a period of three years, which is why it was also taken up for discussion at the <keyword id="6365387" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="PMO">PMO</keyword> on Monday, sources told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/services/education/good-news-for-professors-pay-hike-for-university-staff-faculty-likely-in-july/articleshow/59328453.cms">ET</a>.
