B-school students get summer placements — but for technology job profiles

<ul><li>The Indian government is also stepping up its efforts to hire interns so as to benefit from fresh ideas from engineering students. </li><li>The All India Council for Technical Education (<keyword id="28262" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="AICTE">AICTE</keyword>), along with the Human Resource and Development Ministry (MHRD) has asked the district magistrates from over 700 districts in India to allow engineering students to intern with them. </li><li>The month-long internship, which will take place in June next year will roll in upto 15 students across 150 District Magistrate offices.</li></ul>With internship season at its peak, it’s not just private companies but the government is also stepping up its efforts to hire interns to get fresh ideas from engineering students. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) along with the Human Resource and Development Ministry (MHRD) asked the district magistrates from over 700 districts in India to allow engineering students to intern with them. The idea is to make the youth learn the on-ground implementation of government policies. The month-long internship for June next year will enroll up to 15 students across 150 District Magistrate offices each. This includes offices in UP, Maharashtra and Haryana. However, their remuneration has not been specified yet. "Our vision is that this internship will expose the in-training engineers to how government departments function and in turn, DMs' offices could also benefit from the fresh inputs and ideas these students can bring," the New Indian Express <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2019/oct/31/engineering-students-to-intern-with-district-magistrates-2054989.html">reported</a> citing officials from AICTE. The initiative by the technical education council is aimed to improve the quality of education in the country. “We thought taking students to DM’s office, which is where most central and state policies touch people directly, will be a great venture.” The Indian government is pushing on-the-job training at government offices as well. Engineering students can now intern with IAS officers

The <keyword id="35662" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-times">Financial Times</keyword> Masters in Management Rankings for the year 2015 have been announced and the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Institutes+of+Management">Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) </a>is named among the top 20 MBA institutes. <keyword id="19478" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIM">IIM</keyword>’s Ahmedabad, Calcutta and Bangalore have earned the 15th, 16th and 26th positions respectively. 
 
While IIMA has gained a better slot this year (it was at number 16 last year), the overall rankings of IIMC have dropped to 16 from previous year’s 13. 
 
According to The Economic Times report, IIMA was awarded the number one institute in placement – packages offered employment within three months and company internships – among other institutes worldwide. 
 
IIMC, however, gained the first in ‘careers’ rank, ahead of its counterpart at Bangalore and Ahmedabad. The ranks are based on seniority of graduates and size of company.

Anand Mahindra offers internship to a millionaire’s son who left home to have his own identity

This is a big setback for the government which is looking to skill a large section of its population. “We believe India is hugely underinvested as far as the apprenticeship programme is concerned and has to make amends because more than 40-45 years of slackness has led to the current levels of skilling in our country,” Ravi Vishwanath, CFO of TeamLease <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/expert-view/hiring-should-revive-in-a-month-says-teamlease-cfo/articleshow/71390958.cms">told </a>ET. The job crisis in the country will also show a reverse trend, according to Vishwanath. But manufacturing and services space are going against the basic trend, as over 40% of them are keen to hire apprentices. “The visible shift is in the intake of apprentices due to increase in growth rate of the services sector. So far, it was the manufacturing sector that was taking apprentices. But now there is an active participation by the services sector as well,” <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/jobs/india-inc-bullish-on-apprentice-hiring-study/articleshow/71733379.cms?from=mdr">said</a> Sumit Kumar, VP (NETAP) at TeamLease Skill University. In fact, when it comes to trade apprentices, employers prefer to hire highschoolers as compared to graduates. The western region is most likely to show a positive hiring sentiment in terms of apprenticeship, followed by north. “Most employers engage apprentices with the purpose of meeting the skill requirements of the company, to boost productivity and to reduce costs. The prevailing economic slowdown has taken a toll on all major industries, and companies are hesitant to hire apprentices that will in turn be a burden on their current financial situation,” Kumar added. The study surveyed nearly 500 employers across 12 sectors. Companies hire apprentices — who are fresh graduates hired as trainees for a stipulated time. These apprentices are given a stipend of nearly ₹12,000 per month. Three in five companies in India are not planning to hire apprentices, survey says

Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR). </li><li>IITs — where students bagged job offers as high as ₹10 million from Uber — have not been notified of any such decision. </li><li>As many as 3,700 Uber employees lost their jobs in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.</li></ul>The COVID-19 crisis has not just impacted the salaried employees but also the new college graduates who landed job offers — who are now staring at an uncertain future. After Gartner, WorkIndia, ride-hailing platform Uber has revoked job offers extended to the management graduates at premier b-schools like Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Management Development Institute (MDI) and S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR). This comes on the backdrop of global layoffs across the company offices. As many as 3,700 Uber employees lost their jobs in wake of the coronavirus pandemic. On May 13, the company told its employees that “today will be your last working day with Uber,” over a Zoom call, IANS reported. A placement head at a top B-school told ET Uber had informed the institute that offers were being revoked. “Students across <a href="https://m.economictimes.com/topic/IIM">IIM</a> Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Calcutta, MDI, SPJIMR have been affected,” ET reported citing the placement head from a top b-school. Several companies have rescinded job offers made to the fresh graduates.That leaves students of premier IIMs and other b-schools that secured thousands of offers, in dire straits. It does not help that most of them bagged ‘above-average salary packages’ this placement season. Most of the recruits were top-notch consulting firms, multinational companies, tech majors and more. Lately, the IIMs have been dealing with last minute withdrawals from these high profile recruiters. IIM Bangalore earlier said that it will now reach out to those recruiters who had shown interest in hiring from the top institute earlier but were not a part of the placement drive — to check if they are still willing to hire candidates. At IIM Calcutta, nearly four companies have revoked the job offers and summer internships so far, affecting over 12 students from the current academic year. On the other hand, IITs — where students bagged job offers as high as ₹10 million from Uber — have not been notified of any such decision. The engineering institutions are now considering hosting another placement drive in July-August as the number of offers being taken back have risen. A US-based consultancy firm recently repealed 11 job offers made to students at IIT Delhi, Madras and Kanpur campuses. The situation, the institutes are now figuring out ways to place the students whose offers have been revoked in other companies. They are even reaching out to their alumni network to place students in the less affected sectors. Uber has revoked job offers made to graduates from IIMs, MDI, SPJIMR

<ul><li>India’s management schools have this year breached the mark of average salaries for MBA graduates at ₹ 2 million. </li><li>Several non-IIMs including SP Jain Institute of Management and Research and Xaviers School of Management have also been paying over ₹2 million average salaries. </li><li>University Business School (UBS), Punjab University (PU), recorded the highest package at ₹5.3 million this year. </li></ul>Beating the average salary packages offered in India, many top management schools in India have significantly scaled up the starting pay for students graduating in 2019. During the recent placement season, several B-schools — including Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode, <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/iit-bombay-placement-rs-32-4-lakh-top-package-for-mba-graduates-5554289/">Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)</a>, Bombay, Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon, Indian Institute of Foreign Technology (IIFT), Delhi and Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) — reportedly offered packages of more than ₹2 million to MBA batches. The highest packages were reported at more than ₹3 million, compared to the average at nearly ₹2 million. According to a Campus Salary Hiring and Employment 2018 report by Mettl, the average salary for MBA graduates last year was recorded as ₹930,000 per annum, which has increased to more than a million this season. The trend clearly indicates business school graduates are now commanding better starting pay. As many as 55 companies breached the average salary mark for MDI this year, for instance, according to ET report. And not all are from the prestigious IIMs. In fact, the highest-paid graduates this year are reportedly from the University Business School (UBS), Punjab University, where the <a href="https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/chandigarh/ubs-touches-new-high-top-package-rs-53-lakh/711070.html">highest package</a> was recorded at ₹5.3 million this year. However, the average remuneration has been at ₹1.17 million for the 2018-19 batch. The average starting salaries for graduates of tier one colleges was recorded as ₹1.5 million, and tier two colleges at ₹534,000, annually, reports ET.
