The Indian start-up wave has come down to a slower pace, as evident from the hiring trends of several start-ups. To name one, Flipkart has deferred the joining dates of recruits from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Students-of-IIM-A-are-helping-this-Gujarat-village-market-toilets-to-tribals-villagers/articleshow/51852988.cms">IIM-A</a>, proving that something is not right in the start-up arena. 
 
There was a time when everyone wanted to join start-ups via placements that were also very enthusiastic about hiring fresh talent. However, most start-ups have now started either <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/IIM-A-has-written-a-strongly-worded-letter-to-Flipkart-after-it-defers-joining-dates-of-recruits/articleshow/52430050.cms">withdrawing their job offers </a>or marking down the salaries offered in the first place.

During the November-January placement season, start-up hiring had surged because these emerging businesses were competing to recruit the best talent; however, now the investors have tightened their money bags, hinting that these start-ups have to focus on profitability and paring costs rather than talent acquisition.

Two of India's most valuable internet companies, Ola and Snapdeal, didn’t even attend the campus placements session this academic year, which was shocking to many, given that a few months back, leading start-ups had partnered with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Vijay-Mallya-debt-fiasco-comes-to-some-good-use-for-Indian-business-schools/articleshow/51496588.cms">top engineering schools</a> for top slots at campus placements, asking them to be prioritised over global technology giants such as Google. 
 
"While one startup withdrew offers given to six students, a few others are saying they will come up with later joining dates as some businesses they had hired for are not doing well," said Ayush Lakhotia, placement coordinator at IIT Bombay. "There is a lot of suspicion and concern among students this time when it comes to startups," he added.

Other than delaying joining dates, start-ups have also started to 'correct' the salaries offered to students, notifying them of the same in the final offer letters.

While conservation, restoration and upgrade of the classrooms in the Heritage Campus is being supported by RBL Bank (Vishwavir Ahuja is the MD &amp; CEO of RBL bank), CR2 upgradation to state-of-art facility and maintenance at IMDC in the <keyword id="4731025" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="iim-a-new-campus">IIM-A New Campus</keyword> is being supported by co-founders of TaxiForSure — Raghunandan G and Aprameya R (PGP 2007 and 2008) — with funding of Rs 2.5 crore each. “RBL has significantly benefited from the quality education imparted at IIMA through several IIMA Alumni in the senior management team. IIM Ahmedabad just raised Rs 7.5 crore from alumni

Vadodara-based <keyword id="4403629" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prachi-Sukhwani">Prachi Sukhwani</keyword> (21) is suffering from macular dystrophy, also known as retinal degradation, since class III. Over the years, she lost 80% of her vision because of this rare genetic disorder. However, her condition couldn’t prove to be a barrier in her road to success. 
 
A BBA student at Maharaja Sayajirao University's Faculty of Commerce, Sukhwani has cracked the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/careers/Engineering-students-continue-to-top-CAT-exams/articleshow/50544337.cms">Common Admission Test</a> (<keyword id="16855" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cat">CAT</keyword>), one of the toughest entrance exams in the country, and scored 98.55 percentile. 
 
After completing her MBA, Prachi intends to join an MNC, following which she dreams of opening a start-up before eventually opening an NGO for the blind.

Gujarat girl with 80% vision loss is now an IIM-A student

In order to attract masses to invest in gold, the Indian government announced various gold investment and savings schemes, like the Gold Monetisation Scheme. However, these schemes got a lukewarm response by people due to lack of awareness, says a recent study by researchers of Institute for Financial Management and Research (<keyword id="218689" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IFMR">IFMR</keyword>), funded by India Gold Policy Centre (IGPC) of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (<keyword id="42512" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIM-A">IIM-A</keyword>). For the study, researchers covered 1000 respondents across four districts, namely Kolhapur in Maharashtra, Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, Hooghly in West Bengal and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. As per the results, out of total 1000 respondents, only five persons were aware about government's <keyword id="2212607" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="gold-schemes">gold schemes</keyword>, such as Gold Monetisation Scheme, Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme and Gold Coin Scheme. "We found that people had little or no awareness about these three gold schemes, which were introduced two years back by the Centre. Out of 1000 respondents in four districts, only five knew about these schemes," said Misha Sharma, one of the researchers from IFMR. Experts are of the opinion that the government should start marketing the schemes so that people can be made aware. "Around 15,000 tonnes of gold, in the form of jewellery is lying idle with citizens across the country. The study had revealed that people are willing to invest in these schemes if they got adequate information about them. It shows that there is indeed a potential," said IGPC Head Prof. Arvind Sahay. "Apart from beefing up marketing efforts, banks should also be motivated to promote gold loan, so that they go out and convince people to opt for such loans. Government's gold schemes are not attracting masses, says IGPC IIM-A study

<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IIM-A&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad</a> (IIM-A) just backed its students and wrote a strongly worded letter to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=flipkart&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">online marketplace Flipkart</a> over late joining of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=recruitment&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">recruits</a>. 
 After <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> deferred the joining dates of new recruits from June to December over restructuring, IIM-A stated that the e-commerce player should guarantee that students have a job whenever the date is finalised. 
 
IIM-A wrote to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=binny+bansal&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Flipkart’s Binny Bansal</a>, Chief People Officer Nitin Seth and Executive Chairman Sachin Bansal, saying that students need to repay loans and turned down multiple opportunities that the campus had to offer for Flipkart. 
 
It also said that Flipkart’s compensation of Rs 1.5 lakh for late joining was not acceptable at all and it should be in the form of a monthly payment starting June. 
 
However, Flipkart has declined increasing the compensation. 
 
Flipkart told ET that it has written to IIM-Ahmedabad placement committee Chairperson Asha Kaul saying that it's taking on all the students it has hired but it wouldn't be able to increase the compensation. 
 
"The decision to defer the date of joining, coming as it does so close to the earlier promised date of June 2016, is sure to make this talent pool regret their decision of joining your company. Talented students fresh out of campus, on the eve of starting successful careers, feel cheated," it said. 
 
The IIM-A in its letter stated that this will affect Flipkart’s engagement with B-school campuses as relationships are based on trust and transparency. 
 
Flipkart is already under pressure as it is trying to lower its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=burn+rate&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">burn rate</a>, trim fixed costs, and is now eyeing profitability only. 
The company has already put high-profile hires on the backburner and is not aggressively looking to add more executives to its ranks, relying more on existing staff to fill senior roles. 
 "We have hired a lot in the last 18 months. There are a few critical positions opened on the hiring side based on specific needs we have which we continue to do. What we have is great internal talent," <keyword id="6364080" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Binny-Bansal">Binny Bansal</keyword> told ET.

Once I get some experience, I will have my own start-up. But my long term goal is to open an NGO for the blind", she says. The news that she had cracked IIM-A came to her on Monday when she was appearing for her last semester BBA exam. IIM students are donating back to the institutes after graduating. Here’s how

The interviews were taken back in 2014 and after one and half years, a rejection letter has left students surprised and shocked. 
 
<a href="http://www.thenewsminute.com/">The News Minute</a> reported that around 250 students across the country received mails saying they were rejected due to their performance in the test - a rule they had never heard of. 
 
Students, mostly from Chennai, said they had never heard of any assessment test. 
 
Meanwhile, sources from placement cell officers in these prominent colleges said to <a href="http://www.thenewsminute.com/article/we-were-cheated-why-tn-students-are-hunger-strike-against-lt-44059">The News Minute</a>, “We have recorded them as placed on the basis of the initial mail in 2014 that congratulated them and told them they were a part of L&amp;T. What happens after that is none of our business. Companies can hold any test they like, ethical or not. 
 Now, anguished students have gone on a hunger strike, calling <keyword id="154871" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="LT-Infotech">L&amp;T Infotech</keyword> move as unethical.

On 26th May, a group of 6,500 candidates who sat for L&amp;T placements in Chennai between September and November 2014 in Chennai were provided offer of intent letters. While they outlined that they weren't legally binding, they were sent subsequent letters and told to wait as they would be accepted in batches. 
 
With this offer of intent however, came a congratulatory mail. “You are now part of L&amp;T Infotech.” A series of letters followed detailing batchwise recruitment procedures based on ranking and academic performances. 
 
Under the impression that they were hired, students rejected multiple job offers. 
 
“We were given instructions by the placement cells not to sit for any other interviews. And not even subtle verbal ones – they were mails and warnings sent out in bold, huge letters,” said one of the students on the condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, HR representatives of L&amp;T Infotech, who handled the placements, told The News Minute that they have resigned. 
 
“We have fought for these students, we have had to take quite a lot of risks. But we decided it was enough,” said a former HR officer, on the condition of anonymity. 
 
Now students, who have loans to repay, are demanding a compensation for 18 months, saying this has been a traumatic experience for them.

L&T Infotech withdraws job offer from 1500 students, mostly from Chennai

In India, there are 20 IIMs at present. In all of these institutions, the selection process consists of three stages. However, each of these IIMs follow an independent admission process. A good performance in the CAT examination is mandatory for admission to any IIM. However, the other factors considered for admission include academics, diversified interests, work experience and GD-PI-WAT performance of the candidate also play a decisive role in the admission. Here is an overview of the three stages of the admission process in IIM. Stage-1: CAT Performance Performing well in the CAT examination is the primary requisite to qualify for the IIM selection process. The candidate’s percentile score in the CAT examination will decide if he or she can hope to get into IIM at all. A high score in CAT examination is the first step of the selection process. The minimum requirement prescribed for admission to different IIMs range between 70 to 85 sectional percentile and 80 to 95 overall percentile. For example, IIM Ahmedabad needs 70 sectional and 80 overall percentile for admission while some new IIMs require 75 to 85 sectional percentile and 90 overall percentile. Thus the sectional and overall percentile requirement differs between different IIMs. Stage-2: IIM Shortlisting process Once the candidate has obtained the percentile score specified by the given IIM, the shortlisting process starts. Each of the IIMs has its own policy regarding the shortlisting in the second stage of admission process. The aspects considered for shortlisting include the CAT examination score, academics, diversity, and work experience besides some others. Stage-3: Final selection process The final selection process at the IIMs comprise of personal interview, an ability test (written) and Group Discussion (in some IIMs). Those candidates shortlisted are invited to attend the PI round in number of cities depending on the choice given by the candidate while applying for admission to the IIM during the CAT exam registration process. The PI-WAT round is given a higher weightage than the CAT score by the IIMs. The final selection of the candidate will also depend on the academic performance and diversity of the candidate. IIM Shillong and IIM Kozhikode conduct GD round on the basis of WAT. Each of the IIMs have their own independent policy of preparing the merit list considering the candidate’s performance in the final selection round, CAT scores, academic profile, diversity, work experience and gender diversity. Common Admission Process (CAP) in the new IIMs Around 10 IIMs in the country including IIM Kashipur, Raipur, Ranchi, Rohtak, Trichy, Udaipur, Bodh Gaya, Jammu, Sambalpur, and Sirmaur adopt a common admission process. This common admission process is coordinated by IIM Ranchi. The two components of the CAP coordinated by the IIM Ranchi consist of WAT and PI. All the IIMs participating in the CAP will not conduct their own independent final admission round. Instead, they will take into account the scores of the candidates in the CAP along with the performance in other individual admission components to make the final admission offer.

Consulting firms emerged as the largest recruiters in the top B-schools of India 
 
At IIM-A, McKinsey &amp; Co made the highest number of offers in the consulting domain, — 15. Also in the fray at IIM-A were Accenture Strategy, Bain &amp; Co. and BCG. 
 At IIM Bangalore, the Boston Consulting Group led with 20 offers followed by Accenture Strategy (14), McKinsey &amp; Co (13), <keyword id="122749" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bain-Company">Bain &amp; Company</keyword> (10), <keyword id="6358918" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deloitte">Deloitte</keyword> (10) and AT Kearney (9). Thirty per cent of the entire batch received offers in the broadly defined consulting sector. Apart from the well-known names, other reputed consultancies such as EXL Consulting (10), Alvarez &amp; Marsal (5), <keyword id="554999" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Roland-Berger">Roland Berger</keyword> (4) and Strategy&amp; (3) picked up candidates from IIM-B. 
 Other prominent recruiters in the consulting space were <keyword id="50041" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="KPMG">KPMG</keyword> (7), <keyword id="66728" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PricewaterhouseCoopers">PricewaterhouseCoopers</keyword> (5), Nomura Research Institute (2), PwC Diamond Consulting (2) and <keyword id="85953" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ernst-Young">Ernst &amp; Young</keyword> (1). 
 
At SPJIMR, consulting was not far behind as 27 per cent of the class of 2017 secured offers from top consulting firms, similar to the last year. The recruiters included Accenture Strategy, GEP, Deloitte, IMS, PwC, KPMG, Avalon Consulting, among others. The profiles offered were strategic consulting, operations consulting, financial advisory and IT consulting. There were also five international consulting offers. 
 At IIM Trichy, one of the newer IIMs, consulting and analytics firms picked up 29 per cent of the students, with BFSI second at 22 per cent. The highest salary offered for a consulting job was ₹19 lakh and the recruiters were <keyword id="28721" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cognizant">Cognizant</keyword>, Deloitte and <keyword id="4231233" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="publicis-sapient">Publicis Sapient</keyword>, among others.

The top recruiters include Boston Consulting Group (BCG), McKinsey &amp; Co, which also rolled out as many as 50 offers at IIM Ahmedabad. “Introduction of Superset has made our processes even more transparent and efficient. We remain committed to providing better outcomes for our students and recruiters through policy and process changes,” added Abhishek Goel, chairperson CDPO at IIM Calcutta. Other top recruiters were Bain &amp; Co., Kearney, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Accenture. This has become a common trend across B-schools. XLRI also attracted the highest number of offers from the consulting domain at 26%, this year. Global multinationals KPMG and PwC were the top most recruiters, rolling out the highest number of offers. This simply mirrored last year’s trend wherein Boston Consulting Group was the leading recruiter. On the other hand, more than half (57%) of the offers at MDI came from companies in the consulting sector. Finance, General Management, Sales and Marketing IIM Calcutta students received 83 job offers from PE firms and other finance companies — accounting for 17% of the total offers. General management and sales and marketing roles added up to 30% of the total offers. These offers came from Aditya Birla Group, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Reliance, Vedanta, TrueNorth, Hindustan Unilever, Colgate-Palmolive, ITC, Mondelez, and FIITJEE. Recruiters hiring for finance roles were Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Barclays, Goldman Sachs, Arga Investment Management, Gaja Capital and JP Morgan Chase. In addition to this, 22% of overall offers were rolled out in product management, analytics and operations. Top recruiters included Microsoft, Google, Salesforce, Amazon, Flipkart, Udaan, EXL Service, American Express, HCL, UnitedHealth Group (Optum) and Mastercard.
