Indian hotel companies have shown resilience during the pandemic and now the markets are celebrating them

<ul><li>Indian Hotels, the operator of Taj Hotels, launched its food delivery platform Qmin at the peak of the pandemic.</li><li>Born out of adversity, this start-up has been profitable since day one in the industry dominated by <keyword id="830092" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zomato" source="Orion">Zomato</keyword> and <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>.</li><li>Jehangir Press, associate VP, strategic accounts management group and commercial director, Qmin at IHCL speaks to Business Insider India about Taj’s value chain, growth story, journey so far and revenue goals for FY23.</li></ul>Indian Hotels, the operator of Taj Hotels, launched its food delivery platform Qmin two years ago. At the height of the pandemic, instead of outsourcing the Taj Hotel Group’s delivery services to existing platforms, the Tata Group launched its own in-house platform in Qmin. In the last two years, Qmin has generated revenues to the tune of ₹100 crore. This year alone, it hopes to clock in revenues to the tune of ₹80 crore. “We are possibly the only food delivery platform that has been profitable from day one because we have found the right balance of using our existing resources,” Jehangir Press, associate VP, strategic accounts management group and commercial director, Qmin at IHCL, told Business Insider India. The 90-minute delivery service Zomato and its rival Swiggy together hold <a href="https://theprint.in/theprint-essential/are-zomato-swiggy-helping-restaurant-business-or-hurting-it-why-cci-has-ordered-a-probe/905581/">90-95%</a> market share in India’s food delivery business, but also burning cash. In the quarter ending March 2022, Zomato posted a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/news/zomato-posted-a-1222-crore-loss-but-its-stock-gained-18-reasons-behind-the-surge/articleshow/91766080.cms">net loss</a> of ₹1,222 crore, which widened by ₹400 crore since last year. With Qmin, the Tata Group could move away from having to depend on the likes of Zomato or Swiggy for deliveries. Qmin also gave the group complete control over the entire value chain from food preparation to delivery. “We have 100% control – over the value chain and with that, you are in control of the safety, hygiene, and health of everything that you're sending out. Also, we obviously cannot compromise on hygiene and safety. We took a call and even though it costs us substantially more, we went with the complete ecosystem,” said Press. Unlike its competitors that have been focusing on chopping their delivery time from 30 minutes to 10 minutes, Qmin says it has prioritized safety, security, hygiene, sustainability and delivering a luxurious experience. Qmin takes up to 90 minutes to deliver its orders. In the June quarter of 2022, there has been a 244% increase in demand for hotels across six major cities — Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Goa, Hyderabad and Mumbai, according to Hotel Momentum India Report 2022. The beneficiaries of this pick up are the listed hospitality players. Over the last one year, most hotel stocks have given returns between 50-100%. “Large-scale infrastructure push by the government in the budget, revival of domestic and international tourism, resumption of international flights, improving leisure and wedding demand are strong drivers,” said a report by Ventura Research. Luxury hotels like Indian Hotels Company, EIH Hotels, Lemon Tree are also set to gain from the G20 Summit 2023 that India will host in Kashmir. The event will be attended by 6,000 delegates. multibagger with an app-advantage Some of the rally in the shares of Tata-owned Indian Hotels Company also has to do with its latest strategy ‘AHVAAN 2025’ which is a roadmap for profitable growth by FY25-26. Under the new strategy the hotel chain aims to build a portfolio of 300 hotels and clock operating margin of 33% by FY26 from 25% at present. Indian Hotels is debt-free and has generated positive cash flows of ₹115 crore in FY22, due to pick up in business and working capital management. The company’s management said their second quarter is generally the weakest. “However, this year, 2Q FY23 estimate doesn’t seem to be that weak, according to the current visibility. For FY24 estimate, while we (and consensus) forecast 12% YoY revenue growth, profitability should improve faster due to cost efficiency gains,” said the management. Integration within the Tata group, and the creation of the Tata Neu super app may also offer a significant upside to revenue. Tata Neu cuts across the many offerings of the group be it travel, shopping, travel bookings, financial services and also provides exclusive offers. IHCL had 2 million loyalty members of its own, but the app helped push this membership base to 3 million. “Revenue from loyalty members has increased from 12-13% of overall revenue pre-Covid to 18% this year. In addition, synergies with Tata’s aviation business has yet to show results,” said a report by HSBC Global Research. Chalet Hotels gets an airport boost Another multibagger stock in the hotel industry -- Chalet Hotels also had a good run up in its share price. Recently, Delhi International Airport asked the company to develop a hotel at the T3 Terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). With this, CHL which runs JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar, Four Points by Sheraton Navi Mumbai and several others, will enter the north India market. It will have around 350-400 rooms positioned in the 5-star deluxe space. The emerging tide of travel post-Covid is reflected in the company’s financials as it made a profit of ₹286 crore in April-June quarter of FY23 against a loss in the previous quarter and corresponding quarter last year. In fact, it was the best first quarter result delivered by the company supported by strong recovery in business travel and IPL season. However, the company highlighted in its latest June quarter results that only 56% of the foreign travel business is back. Its MD &amp; CEO Sanjay Sethi quoted several reasons for it including difficulty to get the visas and Russia Ukraine war. Boost in business trips highly beneficial to Lemon Tree Hotels, say analysts While it’s not a multibagger, the stock of Lemon Tree also went up by 76% in the last one year. It’s one of the largest hotel chains in the mid-priced segment in India. “With revival of demand in corporate travel, large events and conferences, Lemon Tree with 86% of its hotels at business destinations, is set to benefit,” said Shobit Singhal, research analyst at Anand Rathi. The brokerage says that it will also benefit from its brand building exercises, cost efficiency, geographic expansion and a mix in price points. “Its strategy of vigorous expansion and its asset-light model augurs well for the long term,” said Singhal. Hotels make for a happy home for investors, stocks return over 50% in less than six months

New Delhi, Jan 31 () Tata group hospitality arm Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL) on Friday reported a 25.37 per cent rise in consolidated net profit to Rs 213.17 crore for the quarter ended December 2019.
 The company had posted a net profit of Rs 170.03 crore for the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, IHCL said in a filing to BSE.
 Consolidated total income rose to Rs 1,408.91 crore for the quarter under consideration as against Rs 1,337.97 crore for the same period a year ago.
 "In line with Aspiration 2022, the company reported seven consecutive quarters of consistent and sustained growth," IHCL Managing Director and CEO Puneet Chhatwal said.
 The re-imagined brandscape enabled IHCL to add a record 24 hotels to the development pipeline, he added.
 The company signed 24 hotels with an inventory of over 2,800 keys in the current financial year. This includes four Taj hotels, two SeleQtions hotels, nine Vivanta hotels and nine Ginger hotels, IHCL said.
 The company managed to reduce its debt levels further and reported a net debt to EBITDA ratio of 1.76, down from 2.11 (as of FY18/19), it added.
 Incorporated by the founder of the Tata group, Jamsetji Tata, the company opened its first hotel -- The Taj Mahal Palace, in Bombay in 1903. IHCL has a portfolio of 197 hotels, including 40 under development globally across 4 continents, 12 countries and in over 100 locations.

IHCL Q3 net profit up 25 pc to Rs 213 cr

Total expense too was higher at Rs 1,248.68 crore as compared to Rs 1,101.20 crore. India's economic momentum coupled with higher consumer spends augurs well for the industry. Premium hotels add in a unique offer - EV charging stations for green travellers

With its $2.4 billion acquisition of government-owned Air India, Tatas have earned the rare distinction of being a part of four airline ventures – Vistara, AirAsia India, Air India and Air India Express. Now, it’s bringing its interests together – by merging low-cost carriers AirAsia with Air India’s low-cost subsidiary Air India Express. It’s also moving towards merging its other two full-service airlines – Vistara with Air India. Between Tata-owned airlines and the largest carrier, IndiGo – the Indian airline industry is set for a duopoly, experts say. “The industry is headed towards a duopolistic structure with Air India and IndiGo making up a dominant 80% of the market,” said an Edelweiss report. IndiGo had a market share of 57.7% as of August 2022 in domestic traffic. The Tata group, on the other hand, carries over a quarter of India’s aviation passengers with Air India and Vistara having a 9.7% share each, and AirAsia’s 5.8% share. OTP has always been IndiGo’s USP and since June, Air India – which has been an outlier – has raced ahead of it. As of September, 87% of Air India’s flights have been on time as compared to 84% of IndiGo’s flights, as per <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/air-india-indigo-in-a-battle-of-on-time-performance/articleshow/95214432.cms">an Economic Times</a> report. Air India’s new CEO Campbell Wilson who has WAS brought in to turn around the formerly debt-ridden state-owned carrier said that its improved performance is an effect of investment in IT systems and strict monitoring of turnaround times. It is also showing an improvement in its passenger load factors or PLFs. Air India was also one of two airlines that has shown a 2.5% improvement in PLF to 73.6% in August as compared to July. Its group airlines – Vistara and AirAsia too held on to their PLFs at 84.3% and 75%, respectively. The sector is poised to take off The Indian aviation sector, like most others, went through a dry phase during lockdowns and one of the rare such markets which has survived without an airline going under. Now, its recovery is one of the fastest in the world and is looking at a rapid growth in volumes. “Industry volumes, although still slightly lower than pre-Covid peak, are recovering at a rapid pace. In FY23, we forecast domestic industry volume growth of over 50%. The demand environment for air travel in India is very strong with economic rebound post-Covid, resurgence in corporate travel and normalization of international tourist arrivals,” said a report by IIFL. This sentiment is also shared by <keyword id="6368386" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="singapore-airlines" source="Orion">Singapore Airlines</keyword>, which owns 49% in Vistara. AirAsia too has been inching up its plans to go international. The drag factors All these factors, however, are half the chips in the place – all bode well for a growing aviation conglomerate. Yet, <a href="https://www.livemint.com/companies/news/tatas-face-uphill-task-in-air-india-turnround-11666293856299.html">analysts have their </a>doubts when it comes to Tata’s ability to pull off these complicated mergers with various cross-holdings and integrate their strengths with partners. Moreso, each of its airlines have their own issues. Vistara and AirAsia India are yet to turn profitable, and they started operations in 2015 and 2013, respectively. Added to that, Air India has a lot of baggage in terms of legacy routes that are unproductive, and in the midst of a turnaround that’s yet to complete – and looks like it would take time. In spite of healthy growth expectations, the sector could also turn competitive with the arrival of new players – Akasa Air and Jet Airways which are poised for a comeback. While Tata group airlines with their strong market share might be able to withstand pricing pressures better, aggressive challengers might wrest it away from them. Yet, all in all the Tata group has one more trick up its sleeve – its extensive presence in the hospitality sector and its ongoing digital integration as a part of its super app, Tata Neu. The app brings all the services the group offers from retail to hospitality to wallets under one umbrella, and that could bring in revenue upside as the app builds a loyalty programme. As per an HSBC report in August, the group’s Indian Hotels’ loyalty member revenues now contribute to 18% of total revenues by the end of first quarter from 12-13%. While IHCL had 2 million loyalty members of its own, the Tata Neu app helped push this base to 3 million, the report had said. If similar synergies kick in to the aviation business too, there is a value that the group’s umbrella can add to the airlines - both merged and individually. Tata's mega aviation merger is poised for flight, but the skies are not clear yet

 "I think it is time to be more incisive in the best interest of <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Group">Tata Group</keyword>. Nothing cogent has been forthcoming from the Tata's on my ouster. I am removing myself from the general meetings. I am shifting this battle to a larger platform," he said in a letter. 
 
Mistry on his own holds 1,28,625 shares in the company, as per IHCL's 2015-16 Annual Report. 
 In <keyword id="6357147" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Steel">Tata Steel</keyword>,Tata Sons holds 29.75 per cent while the total of promoter and promoter group holding is 31.35 per cent while non-promoter shareholder LIC holds 13.62 per cent. 
 <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword> holds 26.51 per cent stake in Tata MotorsBSE -0.17 %, while the overall promoter and promoter group holding is at 33 per cent, while that of LIC is at 5.11 per cent. Mistry holds 14,500 shares in his individual capacity. 
 
On the other hand, in Tata ChemicalsBSE 2.26 %, Tata Sons has 19.35 per cent stake and the total of promoter and promoter group holding is at 30.80 per cent, while that of LIC is 3.33 per cent. Mistry's holding is 16,000 shares.
