There is no information regarding a rescheduling of the exam from the <keyword id="4997132" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="cambridge-assessment-international-education">Cambridge Assessment International Education</keyword> (CAIE), which conducts the examination. According to the CAIE website, there are over 400 schools in India, which follow its curriculum. <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword> spoke to a few parents across the country to assess what their concerns are about.“The board is not concerned about the safety, mental and physical well-being of the children” said a parent in Mumbai. The schools under CAIE are supposed to conduct their main offline exams for its students starting from April 27. “Online classes were being held from past six months when the cases were little subsided in the country. Now when the cases are exploding, the board wants offline exams,” said another parent whose kid goes to a CAIE school in Mumbai. The parents seem to be strongly against the idea of conducting exams -- be it online or offline -- as it's not at all safe for their families due to the pandemic situation and every child doesn’t have the resources to appear for an online exam. “Who will be responsible if a child catches <keyword id="8764262" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid">COVID</keyword> and gives it to the entire family?” a father expressed his outrage towards the board. Due to a large number of students attending the exam, this can be highly infectious and risky for all students and there are bigger chances of getting an infection. Earlier this week, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/education/news/cbse-class-10-board-exams-cancelled-class-12-exams-postponed-as-covid-19-cases-surge/articleshow/82063990.cms">cancelled </a>exams for class 10 and postponed the class 12 exams. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Diane Selkirk and her husband homeschooled their daughter while sailing around the world. </li><li>The family stopped in Australia for public school and to help fulfill a list of "ordinary childhood experiences."</li></ul>Two years into an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/family-of-5-lives-on-a-boat-full-time-photos">around-the-world sailing adventure </a>with my husband, our then 10-year-old daughter, and her cat Charlie, we decided it was time for a break. We'd started our journey from Vancouver, Canada, in 2009, when my daughter Maia was seven, embracing boat schooling as we explored the Pacific Coast of Mexico and the islands of the South Pacific.While Maia appeared to be thriving, a stop in Australia for work presented a good opportunity to assess our relaxed schooling methods — it was primarily centered on math and illustrated essays about each country.My daughter had her own set of goals. As an avid reader, she'd compiled a list titled "ordinary childhood experiences," noting everything she thought she was missing out on. Despite having swum with giant manta rays, interviewed a Marquesan chief, and participated in a traditional Fijian feast, she'd never attended a school dance, taken a test, or played on a sports team.As a parent, I got it. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sold-everything-to-live-on-a-boat-full-time-2023-10">Sailing around the world was my husband's and my dream</a>, and we realized early on it wasn't hers. While we had chosen a rich life brimming with opportunity, from retracing the paths of the great navigators to delving into the conservation of giant clams, it came with a unique sense of guilt. My child was bemoaning the fact that she'd never tackled math questions under pressure. But I think what she really feared was that while everyone else was growing up in sync, she was being left behind.<h2>Reassurance for the whole family</h2>Our time in Brisbane, Australia, unfolded amidst the whirlwind of daily life. My daughter's stellar report cards and high test scores demonstrated that our unconventional approach to education hadn't hindered her learning. However, as she checked off experiences from her "ordinary childhood" list, a sense of wistfulness and nostalgia for the extraordinary version she had left behind began to grow.Even though she'd made a happy transition to high school with a great group of friends, when the time came to leave Australia and continue our voyage, she was excited and ready to go.Two and a half years of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/american-living-in-australia-shares-school-differences-2023-11">traditional schooling in Australia</a> revealed that Maia flourished when given a bit more structure. So, instead of continuing with our (very) informal curriculum, I helped her select courses from the Cambridge IGCSE program. I was still committed to skipping exams (and grades for that matter), but the text and workbooks came in a wide range of subjects, and met her need for each class to have a clear beginning and end.Within a few weeks of setting off, she turned 13 and swiftly settled into a pleasant routine of homeschooling, exploring, journaling, and art. By the time we were halfway along the Indonesian archipelago, we thought we had this traveling-with-a-teenager thing nailed. But then the tears came.<h2>Parents can't replace friends</h2><div type="image" title="Kids jumping off a boat into turquoise waters." height="3456" width="5184" msid="105514984" hostid="261" sizebytes="1792256"></div>It often surprises people to learn that the world sailing community is filled with families exploring the globe. In a given year, more than 10,000 small boats, crewed by families and individuals, take off on journeys.Many travel along traditional trade routes, moving with the seasons and staying ahead of storms. For us, this usually meant other "kid boats" were never far away. However, as we sailed and dove through <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/solo-woman-female-traveler-backpacking-safety-asia-indonesia-jakarta-guide-2023-10">Indoensia's</a> Alor Archipelago, then moved on to Nusa Tenggara where we saw traditional wooden boats under construction, and finally reached Komodo to spot dragons, we didn't encounter a single international boat.My daughter did spend a couple of fun afternoons hanging out with local kids, but we were moving too fast for friendships to grow. So when Halloween arrived, her loneliness was especially piercing. I wanted to do something special.Instead of a scary movie night or a Halloween-themed dinner, I planned a spooky wreck dive. It never occurred to me that my newly minted teen would be terrified when I told her that the wreck's large population of menacing lionfish were actually the ghosts of drowned sailors.<h2>An ocean filled with families</h2>Hitting a low point, I questioned our choice. I knew the teen years could be tumultuous, but our kid was genuinely sad. Fortunately, when we reached Malaysia, we connected with half a dozen "teen boats," all headed toward South Africa. Despite our initial plan to sail around Southeast Asia another year, we pivoted. She needed friends her own age.Interestingly, many of the challenges that make the teen years tough at home can make them great on the road. I watched in awe as my little kid transformed into a capable travel companion who assisted with everything from provisioning to route planning. During an emergency rudder repair, she dispelled the myth that teens can't complete a simple task without repeated reminders and was a calm problem solver who stuck with the job.<div type="image" title="Young woman looking after pets at a neuter clinic in Mexico" height="4532" width="3065" msid="105514985" hostid="261" sizebytes="1351006"></div>With her friendship needs met, she fully immersed in our trip. In the Maldives, she began to research the effects of the climate crisis on the low-lying atolls. In South Africa, she developed an interest in human rights. As our final months flew past, I realized our once reluctant sailing partner was maturing into a confident young woman with clear ideas about her future.I grew too and began to let go of the guilt. And now, with Maia's childhood and three of the world's oceans behind us, I'm grateful we went against convention. Maia's unique childhood is just part of our story now — and she's grateful her ideas and experiences are out of sync. Chanda, professor and director of the Immunity and Pathogenesis Programme.</li><li>Check out the latest news and updates on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Business Insider</a>. </li></ul>A team of US scientists, led by an Indian-origin researcher, has identified a set of human genes that fight SARS-CoV-2 infection, the virus that causes Covid-19. According to Sumit K. Chanda, professor and director of the Immunity and Pathogenesis Programme at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, the scientists have gained new insights into how the virus exploits the human cells it invades. "We are still searching for its Achille's Heel so that we can develop optimal antivirals," Chanda said in a paper published in the journal Molecular Cell. Knowing which genes help control viral infection can greatly assist researchers' understanding of factors that affect disease severity and also suggest possible therapeutic options. The genes in question are related to interferons, the body's frontline virus fighters. Soon after the start of the pandemic, clinicians found that a weak interferon response to SARS-CoV-2 infection resulted in some of the more severe cases of Covid-19. This knowledge led Chanda and his collaborators to search for the human genes that are triggered by interferons, known as interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), which act to limit SARS-CoV-2 infection. "We found that 65 ISGs controlled SARS-CoV-2 infection, including some that inhibited the virus' ability to enter cells, some that suppressed manufacture of the RNA that is the virus's lifeblood, and a cluster of genes that inhibited assembly of the virus," Chanda explained. "What was also of great interest was the fact that some of the ISGs exhibited control across unrelated viruses, such as seasonal flu, West Nile and HIV, which leads to AIDS". The team also identified eight ISGs that inhibited both SARS-CoV-1 and CoV-2 replication in the subcellular compartment responsible for protein packaging, suggesting this vulnerable site could be exploited to clear viral infection. "This is important information, but we still need to learn more about the biology of the virus and investigate if genetic variability within these ISGs correlates with Covid-19 severity," said Laura Martin-Sancho, a senior postdoctoral associate in the Chanda lab. As a next step, the researchers will look at the biology of SARS-CoV-2 variants that continue to evolve and threaten vaccine efficacy. The move to block Trump from reaching out to his millions of followers had unsettled many around the world, not just the Republicans in the US, who saw it as a threat to free speech While Twitter stuck to its guns, and banned Trump permanently, Facebook said its recently-formed Oversight Board ⁠— an eminent group of lawyers, academics, journalists, and world leaders ⁠— would decide on Trump’s future on social media. The decision will set a precedent for how Facebook handles posts and propaganda by other world leaders around the world. “The Board will announce its decision on the case concerning former US President Trump's indefinite suspension from Facebook and Instagram in the coming weeks,” the committee said in a statement, which also mentioned that it had received 9,000 responses so far. “The Board’s commitment to carefully reviewing all comments has extended the case timeline, in line with the Board’s bylaws. We will share more information soon,” it added. Why it matters in India? In India, too, this will be watched closely by both the ruling administration under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as by his detractors. Most recently, on April 16, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/apr/15/facebook-india-bjp-fake-accounts">The Guardian</a> reported that Sophie Zhang, citing a 6,600-word memo from a former Facebook employee, that the social media giant allowed the misuse of its platform by political leaders from around the world, including those from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India, to manipulate voters. A similar controversy erupted in August last year, when Ankhi Das, the then public policy executive for Facebook in India, was accused by <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/facebook-hate-speech-india-politics-muslim-hindu-modi-zuckerberg-11597423346">the Wall Street Journal</a> of giving the Hindu nationalists in India a free ride with hate speech. Ankhi Das had to step down. The current dispensation in India has been uncomfortable with the alleged liberal bias of the social media giants long before Trump was removed both from The White House as well as from these platforms. In May 2020, at the height of the violence following the murder of George Floyd, the 46-year old African American in Minnesota, Minneapolis, Twitter decided to remove some tweets from the US President “in public interest”. It caused some curious reactions even in India. “Twitter is no longer pretending to be a neutral platform… So, there is clearly need (sic) for regulating them. However, every curb brings its own wrinkles. Our own first amendment is a good example,” <a href="https://twitter.com/sanjeevsanyal/status/1266283515978510343">said</a> Sanjeev Sanyal, India’s Principal Economic Advisor. The final decision of the Oversight Board, comprising of members like the former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, former European Court of Human Rights judge András Sajó, Internet Sans Frontières Executive Director Julie Owono, Yemeni Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman as well as Sudhir Krishnaswamy, a constitution expert from India, will be watched closely. Mumbai, Mar 26 () As schools around the country remain closed for an extended period, Dhirubhai Ambani International School is commencing stay-at-home life teaching through the virtual platform for the students of the prestigious school, its founder chairperson Nita Ambani said.
