Top performing mutual funds in India 2019

Mumbai, Dec 29 () The Reserve Bank of India-appointed administrator of the crippled Dewan Housing Finance Ltd (DHFL) called for a meeting of its creditors for the first time on Monday after the mortgage lender was admitted for insolvency proceedings.
 The third-largest pure play mortgage player is the first non-banking financial company or housing finance company to face the corporate insolvency resolution process.
 The Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) had admitted the company for insolvency resolution on December 2 and appointed Indian Overseas Bank former managing director and CEO R Subramaniakumar as the company's administrator.
 "Since the resolution professional (administrator) has now been appointed, he is meeting all the creditors and will discuss the way forward for resolution of the company," a source told .
 DHFL did not respond to an e-mail query.
 The meeting on Monday will be attended by all creditors of the company including banks, bondholders, insurance and mutual fund companies.
 Subramaniakumar will also discuss timelines so that the account is resolved at the earliest, he said.
 "The status of the claims that have been received so far by the company will also be decided upon," said another source.
 In its order on December 3, the NCLT asked the company's administrator to update the list of depositors, along with the amount payable to each of them. Following this, the administrator had reportedly asked all its fixed depositors and bondholders to file their claims by December 17.
 The NCLT order had also noted that the company has an outstanding unsecured loan of Rs 18,882 crore as of March 31, 2018. The unsecured loans constituted Rs 10,243 crore of public deposits for the same period.
 Citing governance issues and severe liquidity crisis, the regulator on November 20 superseded the board of DHFL and appointed Subramaniakumar as its administrator.
 The decision on DHFL came after the government on November 15 notified Section 227 of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), empowering the RBI to refer stressed financial service providers with an asset size of at least Rs 500 crore to insolvency courts.
 The central bank has also appointed a three-member committee, consisting of IDFC First Bank Non-Executive Chairman Rajiv Lall, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Managing Director and CEO N S Kanan, and Association of Mutual Funds in India CEO N S Venkatesh, to advise the company's administrator in the resolution process.
 As of July 2019, the beleaguered home financier owes Rs 83,873 crore to banks, National Housing Board, mutual funds and bondholders/retail bondholders. Of the total, secured debt stands at Rs 74,054 crore and unsecured Rs 9,818 crore. Most banks have or are going to declare DHFL account as non-performing assets in the third quarter. HV HRS

New Delhi, Apr 13 () Markets regulator Sebi on Monday disposed of insider trading charges against two mutual fund houses - SBI Funds Management and Aditya Birla Sunlife AMC - in the matter of Manappuram Finance.It was alleged that the two fund houses had sold shares of Manappuram Finance Ltd (MFL) while in possession of unpublished price sensitive information (UPSI) about the company and thereby violated insider trading norms.Sebi, pursuant to investigation in the matter of selective disclosure of unpublished price sensitive information by MFL, observed that the two fund houses had sold its shares while allegedly in possession of UPSI during March 1-20, 2013 and allegedly violated PIT (Prohibition of Insider Trading) Regulations.Sebi noted that officials of MFL met Ambit Capital Pvt Ltd's research analysts on March 18, 2013 to seek market guidance about the quarterly results and future outlook.Ambit published a research report based on the meeting which was distributed to its clients (broking as well as research) on March 19, 2013 before the market opening hours.In the research report, Ambit had changed its rating of MFL's stock from "buy" to "under review."Ambit published the report based on the meeting which was distributed to its clients (broking as well as research) on March 19, 2013 before the market opening hours.The information of negative profit for the fourth quarter of FY2012-13, which is deemed to be price sensitive information, was disclosed to the stock exchanges by MFL on March 20, 2013 after market hours and the information was already in the public domain before that.Sebi said the asset management companies (AMCs) were not in a position to know that the information that was distributed in the research report or discussed in the conference call or being covered by media is UPSI.The transactions of the asset management companies was purely from the point of view of the unit holders in the mutual fund and selling of the scrip of MFL during that time was necessary to avoid significant loss to the unit holders in the scheme, since the price of the scrip was rapidly falling after the research report was issued in the morning of March 19, 2013, it added."I do not find a reasonable and acceptable degree of probability towards proving beyond doubt or even, without existence of significant doubt that Noticee (the two fund houses) had traded in the scrip of MFL when in possession of UPSI and hence, the allegation of violation of...PIT Regulations...does not stand established," Sebi Adjudicating Officer Vijayant Kumar Verma said in similarly worded separate orders."I hereby dispose of the SCN (show cause notice) in the matter without any penalty," he added.Last month, Sebi had disposed of insider trading allegations against IDFC Asset Management Company and BNP Paribas Asset Management in the same matter. Manappuram Fin: Sebi disposes of insider trading charges against SBI MF, Aditya Birla Sunlife MF

<keyword id="45442" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries-Limited">Reliance Industries Limited</keyword> (RIL) has said that it has applied for a payments bank licence in collaboration with the State Bank of India (SBI), which would have up to 30% stake in the joint venture (JV). 
 Earlier, Aditya Birla Nuvo Limited (<keyword id="193651" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ABNL">ABNL</keyword>), which manages mobile operator Idea Cellular, and the Future Group had also applied for licences. According to ABNL, it is eyeing to own 51% in the bank and Idea will own the rest. 
 The Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="30067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword>) would ultimately take a final decision on these applications. 
 Some of the applicants, including <keyword id="44373" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aditya-Birla-Group">Aditya Birla Group</keyword>, had also applied for full-fledged banking licences in 2013. However, their applications were rejected by the RBI. 
 
The RBI had issued licences to Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IDFC) and Bandhan to set up full-fledged banks in 2014. 
 
Muthoot Fincorp, which was looking to apply for a small finance bank, has now backed out. "The RBI guidelines say we have to convert the current business into small finance business. We are not sure how it will play out," said Muthoot Fincorp Executive Director Thomas Muthoot. 
 
Payments bank is allowed to raise deposits of up to Rs 1 lakh per individual. It can also issue ATM cards and sell products like mutual funds. However, they are not allowed to issue credit cards.

New Delhi, Apr 21 () Markets regulator Sebi on Tuesday disposed of insider trading charges against Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Company in the matter of Manappuram Finance. It was alleged that Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Company (earlier known as Kotak Mahindra Old Mutual Life Insurance) sold shares of Manappuram Finance Ltd (MFL) while in possession of unpublished price sensitive information (UPSI) about the company and thereby violated insider trading norms. New Delhi, Mar 4 () The RBI needs to find room for more rate cuts to deal with the impact of coronavirus on the economy, says IDFC Mutual Fund report. The report titled 'The Coronavirus and Revealed Preferences' further said the RBI, on its part, has a dominant revealed current preference for bringing back credit growth. "Again the revealed preference in MPC (on aggregate, not necessarily for each individual member) seemed to be to look for room to ease as soon as inflation allowed, even before the impact from the coronavirus had taken hold. With new evolving information, the nudge is likely to come sooner than before," the report said. It is also noteworthy that the central bank chose to put out an assurance statement with respect to evolving developments, despite already being in the midst of substantial incremental non-traditional monetary easing, the statement said. "All of this means that monetary policy, conventional and otherwise, will continue to play a pivotal role for now with consequent benefits for quality interest rates," it added. The report pointed out that the finance minister's revealed preference is also similar to that of the RBI, i.e to get credit growth to rebound. "This is also basis a recognition that scope for incremental fiscal response has been somewhat limited given the well documented constraints. "In fact this space may get even further constrained if lack of growth buoyancy stresses tax growth and tepid financial markets stress capital receipts targets," it said. The report, however added that it is unlikely that the government will compromise on spending to meet the fiscal deficit targets. Noting that the global monetary policy will continue to be extremely supportive, it said in India too, the RBI's revealed preference will get a further leg up and conventional easing may start supporting unconventional tools already in deployment. "Indeed the swap market is already pricing the next 40-50 basis points of repo rate cuts," it said. The US Federal Reserve on Tuesday cut interest rate by 50 basis points to deal with coronavirus. The recent arrest of Subrata Roy—who transformed himself from a lesser-known employee of <keyword id="4637" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sahara">Sahara</keyword> Finance, a minuscule finance company that ran a chit fund in the impoverished state of Bihar, to the owner of Sahara India Pariwar, which has an asset base of more than $13 billion and employs over 900,000 people—has revived debates on the clandestine and often murky world of shadow banking that has been flourishing in India, like most emerging and developed economies, for centuries. 
 Despite consistent efforts by Reserve Bank of India (<keyword id="30067" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="RBI">RBI</keyword>) and financial markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (<keyword id="35210" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="sebi">SEBI</keyword>) to bring operations of shadow banking players under the ambit of financial scrutiny, these firms have continued to thrive, while triggering insurmountable risks that are typically associated with unregulated financial products. The reason is: more than 50 per cent of India’s 1.2 billion population is still unbanked. For centuries, shadow banking firms have been reaching out to meet the banking needs of this humongous unbanked population. 
 The recent decision of RBI to give in-principal nod for banking licences to Kolkata-based micro-lender Bandhan Financial Services—along with Mumbai-based non-banking financial company <keyword id="6361420" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="IDFC">IDFC</keyword> that specialises in infrastructure lending—effectively disregarding more prominent applicants including Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Capital, Kumar Mangalam Birla-controlled Aditya Birla Nuvo, Bajaj Finserv, Religare Enterprises, Indiabulls Housing Finance, India Infoline and Muthoot Finance, has reinforced the central bank’s policy of ‘financial inclusion’ which means offering banking services to those who are outside the purview of mainstream, regulated banking operations. 
What gave Bandhan (set up in 2001 by Chandra Shekhar Ghosh) an edge when it came to bagging preliminary baking licence is that it focuses on working with ‘socially disadvantaged and economically exploited women’ and has a strong presence in the under-banked eastern and north eastern regions of India. Despite a litany of players in India’s banking space—there are 27 state-run banks and 22 private sector ones in the country—RBI has apprehensions if the so-called corporate banks are serious about penetrating into India's hinterland and enhancing lending to farmers and small traders who comprise a major chunk of the unbanked population. 
 
Shadow banking, which typically comprises a diverse set of institutions and markets that carry out traditional banking functions but do so outside the traditional system of regulated depository institutions, has flourished world over. A recent report by Financial Stability Board pegged its size at around $67 trillion globally, representing a little more than 30 per cent of the total financial system. Shadow banking institutions—hedge funds, securitisation vehicles, asset-backed commercial paper conduits, money market mutual funds, investment banks and mortgage companies—prospered by playing the role of intermediaries between investors and borrowers—a space that is yet to be fully tapped into by traditional banking players—profiting from fees or the difference in interest rates between what they pay the investors and what they receive from borrowers, besides offering exotic financial products such as asset-backed commercial paper programmes and off-balance sheet credit default swaps. 
 
Though regulatory glare has became intense post the 2008 financial crisis—which is said to be precipitated by an unabated proliferation of exotic financial products which shadow banking players are typically known for—these behind-the-scene banking players are yet to be tamed and are likely to evade scrutiny as long as the organised banking players fail to fully cater to unmet banking needs of the populations comprising lesser mortals. 
 
The picture is no different in India. In fact, recently, while regulators were chasing a seemingly unperturbed Subrata Roy—who managed to amass immense wealth including ownership of some of the most luxurious hotels in the world including New York's Plaza Hotel, Dream Hotel and London's Grosvenor House hotel, over his 35-year-long ‘shadowy banking career’—said that Sahara will be among the top firms in the world in five years in terms of assets and profits. His optimism is not fully unfounded. Despite SEBI’s claim that he owes more than Rs 20,000 crore to investors who were sold various unregulated banking products, there has been very little sign of a mutiny from the investors whom he cheated. This is surprising in a country where collapse of financial schemes has historically elicited a violent reaction. This means that as long as the elite corporate banking system fails to reach out to unbanked population, shadowy banking players will flourish in India and elsewhere.
