According to a report by the International Data Corporation (<keyword id="19950614" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IDC" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="IDC" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="IDC">IDC</keyword>), Q2 2024 emerged as the fourth consecutive quarter to record growth in shipments. In Q2 2024, 35 million smartphones were shipped in the country, recording a 3.2% year-on-year growth. “The latter half of Q2 is a prelude to the crucial second half of the year with the festive sale period going up till November. Apart from old inventory clearance in the first half of the quarter, vendors also started to launch new smartphones, especially in the mid-premium/premium segment from mid-quarter onwards, for monsoon sales in July and August,” said Upasana Joshi, Senior Research Manager, Devices Research, IDC India. Samsung took a big hit in Q2 2024, with its market share declining from 15.7% in Q2 2023 to 12.9% in Q2 2024. <h2><keyword id="20704187" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-smartphones" source="keywords">5G smartphones</keyword></h2>The share of 5G smartphones in the overall smartphone shipments increased to 77% in Q2 2024, with 27 million 5G smartphones shipped during the quarter. In Q2 2023, the share of 5G smartphones in shipments was just 49%. The average selling price (ASP) of 5G smartphones has decreased to $293. The shipments to online channels grew by 8% year-on-year to reach 50% in Q2 2024, up from 47% in Q2 2023. Due to severe heatwave conditions in several parts of India, offline channel shipments declined by 2% year-on-year in Q2 2024. Indian smartphone market records 7.2% growth in the first half of 2024, Vivo leads the market in Q2

Spending on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the country may triple to USD 5 billion by 2027, an <keyword id="21652031" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intel-IDC-report" source="keywords">Intel-IDC report</keyword> released on Tuesday said. According to the report, entities in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> spent USD 1,703.8 million on AI in 2023. "<keyword id="20959016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI-spending" source="keywords">AI spending</keyword> in India is expected to increase to USD 5 billion with CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 31.5 per cent between 2023 to 2027. By 2027 AI will be everywhere," Sharath Srinivasamurthy, Associate Vice President, <keyword id="19950614" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IDC" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="IDC" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="IDC">IDC</keyword> said. He said that in 2023, major spending of USD 209 million was driven by AI infrastructure provisioning and related software. It was followed by augmented customer service agents at USD 168.8 million, digital assistance USD 113.1 million, augmented threat intelligence USD 100.1 million and program advisors recommendation systems USD 97.1 million. "The infrastructure provisioning will continue to be the biggest contributor in overall spent," Srinivasamurthy said. Intel India Region Vice President and Managing Director, Santhosh Viswanathan said India is ready for AI as around 20 per cent of the world's data is produced in the country and it is the third biggest global market. Viswanathan said India leads globally in terms of technical skill availability. AI spending in India may triple to USD 5 bn by 2027: Report

New Delhi [India], May 22 (ANI): The average selling price (ASP) for overall <keyword id="1531471" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="wearable-devices" source="Orion">wearable devices</keyword> has declined by more than 17 per cent in the first quarter of 2024—from USD 22.62 to USD 18.59—hitting a record low, the <keyword id="668267" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="International-Data-Corporation" source="Orion">International Data Corporation</keyword> (<keyword id="6377157" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IDC" source="Orion">IDC</keyword>) observed in its latest report. Excess inventory in the online channel and fewer new launches were some of the primary reasons behind the decline in prices, the report noted. Citing a similar situation a year ago, it added, that the <keyword id="21764166" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smartwatch-ASPs" source="keywords">Smartwatch ASPs</keyword> dropped to USD20.65 from USD29.24 a year ago on the back of e-tailer sales events and discounts. Although, the share of advanced smartwatches increased from 2.0 per cent to 3.2 per cent in the 1Q24. The <keyword id="21764167" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-wearable-device-market" source="keywords">Indian wearable device market</keyword> grew by 2.1 per cent year-over-year (YoY) to 25.6 million units after growing by at least double digits consecutively since the fourth quarter of 2017. According to the IDC data, the top five vendors namely BoAt, Noise, Fire-Bolt, Boult, and Oppo, remain unchanged from a year ago. Although their collective share declined from 63.9 per cent to 59.9 per cent, the long tail of smaller vendors gained a share. Within the smartwatch category, shipments of the top three vendors declined due to high channel inventory. However, Titan and BeatXP grew by 2X and 3X, respectively. In the earwear category, all vendors from the top five grew their shipments, except Boult, the report observed. "Vendors have started focusing on retail expansion via partnerships with large format national and/or regional retail chains and bundling wearables with other product categories like smartphones, laptops, etc. It will be interesting to see if these initiatives help bring back the growth momentum, especially in the festive sales period in the second half of the year," said Anand Priya Singh, Market Analyst, Smart Wearable Devices, IDC India. Noting the increasing share of offline channels, the report adds that there was an increase of 11.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2023, while online channel shipments declined by 14.1 per cent YoY in 1Q24, its second consecutive quarter of decline.

IDC expects 2023 to remain flat or register single-digit growth led by the upcoming festive season. A plethora of offers or discounts are expected to ensure a healthy second half of the year. Share of the online channel grew by 25 per cent in 2023 year-on-year reaching 39 per cent driven by online sales festivals, the global market intelligence and advisory services provider IDC said in the report. "Due to decreasing prices, consumers are opting to buy an affordable smart TV instead of retrofitting non-smart TV with a streaming stick, which is losing popularity, its shipments declining by 85 per cent in 1H23," said <keyword id="3886166" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upasana-joshi" source="Orion">Upasana Joshi</keyword>, Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India. While the popular screen sizes of 32-inch and 43-inch remain mainstream with 71 per cent collective share, the larger screens are gaining popularity. Share of the 55-inch, according to IDC, went up to 12 per cent from 9 per cent a year ago, resulting in 35 per cent YoY growth in the USD 400+ price segment. In the first half of 2023, the average selling price of smart TVs stood at USD 380, a 3 per decline from last year. IDC said brands are focusing on low-priced models in the budget segment with regular price drops. India smart TV market grew 8% in first half of 2023

Budget tablets help Samsung consolidate its lead in the Indian tablet market

China and the Asia Pacific led the surge in demand, accounting for half of all global shipments. Smartphones are back in demand as shipments grow by 25% – Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi consolidate market share

Lenovo led the global traditional PC market (including desktops, notebooks, and workstations) in the first quarter of 2021 with 24.3 per cent share, as the worldwide shipments grew 55.2 per cent (on-year), according to an <keyword id="6377157" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="idc">IDC</keyword> report. <keyword id="2547931" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HP-Inc">HP Inc</keyword> was second with 22.9 per cent PC market share, followed by <keyword id="3346453" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dell-Technologies">Dell Technologies</keyword> at 15.4 per cent share. PC shipments reached 84 million worldwide in the January-March period, a modest 8 per cent decline from the fourth quarter of 2020. While sequential declines are typical for the first quarter, a decline this small has not been seen since the first quarter of 2012 when the PC market declined 7.5 per cent sequentially, according to IDC's ‘Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker' showed on Saturday. "Unfulfilled demand from the past year has carried forward into the first quarter and additional demand brought on by the pandemic has also continued to drive volume," said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC's Mobile Device Trackers. "However, the market continues to struggle with setbacks including component shortages and logistics issues, each of which has contributed to an increase in average selling prices," he added. <keyword id="6354427" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple">Apple</keyword> with 8 per cent market share (by shipments) was fourth while Acer Group with 5 per cent came fifth. The continued resurgence in the PC market as well as increases in average selling prices (ASPs) have primarily been driven by growth in gaming, the need for higher performance notebooks in the enterprise, and an increase in demand for touchscreens within the education segment. Ryan Reith, program vice president with IDC's Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers said that the ongoing shortages in the semiconductor space only further prolong the ability for vendors to refill inventory and fulfill orders to customers. "We believe a fundamental shift has occurred around the PC, which will result in a more positive outlook for years to follow. All three segments — business, education, and consumer — are experiencing demand that we didn't expect to happen regardless of many countries beginning their ‘opening up' process," Reith noted. Component shortages will likely be a topic of conversation for the majority of 2021. "The more important question should be what PC demand will look like in 2-3 years," Reith said. Lenovo leads global PC market in first quarter of 2021 with 24.3% share, HP on second with 22.9% share, says IDC report

According to the IDC, smartwatches, which can run third-party applications on the device itself, accounted for a 24.5 per cent share in the watch category and Apple continues to lead the smartwatch category with a massive 51 per cent share in 2020. Price reductions on older Apple Watches and the promotional discounts offered by banks and e-tailer channels on Series 5 and Series 6 made the device a popular purchase among consumers in India. According to Jaipal Singh, Associate Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India, the high cost associated with wearable watches is not much of a challenge anymore. "Also, the watch form factor is now seen as more appealing to the consumers, and vendors will leverage this shift by further expanding their watches portfolio in coming quarters," he added. <keyword id="6439913" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="counterpoint-research">Counterpoint Research</keyword> said that Apple Watch Series 6 and SE did well globally, shipping 12.9 million units and accounting for 40 per cent market share in Q4. Apple Watch garners 51% global market share, India sweet spot, says report

Led by PC and <keyword id="10838881" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="printer-major-HP">printer major HP</keyword> Inc., the worldwide hardcopy peripherals (HCP) market saw overall shipments grow 5.6 per cent year over year to approximately 27 million units in the fourth quarter of 2020, according to an <keyword id="668267" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="International-Data-Corporation">International Data Corporation</keyword> (IDC) report. However, <keyword id="10838883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="shipment-value">shipment value</keyword> during the quarter declined 5.1 per cent to $11.1 billion, according to the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Hardcopy Peripherals Tracker on Friday. <keyword id="10838882" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="strong-shipment-growth">Strong shipment growth</keyword> in the second half of the year was responsible for the 0.4 per cent overall unit growth for the full year 2020. Market value declined 12.3 per cent for the whole year, however, due to low shipments of high-end office devices. Similar to last quarter, the common theme in Q4 was the increased demand for low-end consumer inkjets and monochrome laser devices, which were readily available toward the end of the year at competitive prices. Both inkjet and laser markets posted year-over-year gains with shipments increasing 7.9 per cent and 3.7 per cent, respectively, said the report. In the laser market, low-end A4 monochrome laser shipments grew year over year due to working from home and home education needs. <keyword id="6367983" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hp">HP</keyword> Inc. outperformed all other companies in the top 5 in terms of shipment growth. The vendor delivered a year-over-year increase of 13.7 per cent with worldwide shipments of nearly 11.2 million units in the quarter. HP's worldwide shipments grow 5.6% in fourth quarter of 2020, says IDC

New Delhi, Mar 20 () International Data Corporation (IDC) on Friday said it has appointed Vasant Rao as Managing Director for India and South Asia with effect from March 18, 2020. Rao will be based out of IDC's Bengaluru office and will be reporting to Eva Au, Managing Director, IDC Asia/Pacific, according to a statement. Prior to joining IDC, he held multiple global leadership roles during his 10-year stint at Cognizant in the analytics, data science, and visualisation domains and built intellectual property-based products. Most recently, Rao was leading the banking and financial services delivery for the North America AI and analytics business unit. "India is a critical and strategically important market for IDC. Today, India's growth is at an inflection point as it transitions from a services-led to a knowledge-based economy that is largely supported by third platform technologies," said Eva Au, Managing Director, IDC Asia/Pacific. "The PC industry continues to be hampered by supply and logistical challenges and unfortunately these issues have not seen much improvement in recent months," said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC's Mobile and Consumer Device Trackers. "Given the current circumstances, we are seeing some vendors reprioritise shipments amongst various markets, allowing emerging markets to maintain growth momentum while some mature markets begin to slow," Ubrani added. The India cloud market is going to witness a visible impact in the probable and pessimistic scenario in terms of heightened adoption with public cloud leading the forefront of all infra-related investments, according to IDC's 'COVID-19 Impact on IT spending Survey May 2020'. According to it, virtual private networks (VPNs), collaboration suites, end-point encryption, and cloud tools will witness an uptake. "Industries like media, education, and IT/ITeS are likely to see an increased uptick primarily because of online entertainment, virtual classrooms, and increased need for collaboration as a result of increased remote working," the findings showed. "We expect an accelerated adoption of cloud, as organizations explore testing of many new initiatives natively on cloud," Sharma added. The report covered the change in cloud budgets and the technology demands to ensure business continuity. According to Sharath Srinivasamurthy, Research Director, Enterprise Solutions &amp; ICT Practices, IDC India, while the impact of COVID-19 will be clearer in the coming quarters, Cloud has been a saviour during the crisis. "Cloud-based VDI and collaboration tools helped enterprises to stay in touch with their employees, clients, and partners. Cloud-based solutions continued to run and enable seamless business operations during the crisis and this has increased the confidence of enterprises in embracing cloud," explained Srinivasamurthy. --IANS na/
