Shares of state-owned behemoth Life Insurance Corporation (<keyword id="19903588" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="LIC" source="keywords">LIC</keyword>) have outperformed rivals like <keyword id="20079495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="HDFC-Life" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="HDFC Life" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="HDFC Life">HDFC Life</keyword> and <keyword id="21278696" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Prudential-Life" source="keywords">ICICI Prudential Life</keyword>, as it placed bets on India's growth sectors, including infrastructure, while the private sector concentrated its bets on tech, consumer and consumer-related <keyword id="19910880" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BFSI" source="keywords">BFSI</keyword> companies. LIC's stock has gained nearly 79% from Rs 620 on June 18, 2023, to Rs 1,109.15 at the closing on Tuesday, according to stock exchange data. In contrast, HDFC Life gave a negative return with Tuesday's closing price of Rs 646.55 on the BSE as compared to Rs 666.55 a year back. ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Co delivered a return of 12%, considering its stock price rise from Rs 582 on June 18, 2023, to Rs 654.10 on June 16, 2024. Over the past one year, <keyword id="19898108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SBI" source="keywords">SBI</keyword> Life Insurance shares have risen from Rs 1,314 to Rs 1,621.20, delivering a return of 23%. Capital market analysts said <keyword id="19935977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance-companies" source="keywords">insurance companies</keyword> make money in two ways - charging premiums for policies and then investing the premiums into assets. It is the latter that generates the bigger delta in profits, thus impacting value creation and managing risks. Global majors, including Warren Buffet-owned Berkshire Hathaway, have been successful due to their ability to make superior investments. Most Indian insurance companies are yet to capitalise on the emergence of the country's <keyword id="19997284" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="infrastructure-sector" source="keywords">infrastructure sector</keyword>, analysts said. Indian insurance companies have concentrated investments in the BFSI, IT, and consumer sectors - all of which have been underperformers in the recent past. Only 8-10% of their investments are in the infrastructure sector. This is far less when compared to global standards. Large global insurance companies -- such as Allianz, Nippon Life Insurance, and Metlife, and other insurers like Berkshire Hathaway -- have much larger exposure ranging from 15 to 30% to the infrastructure sector, analysts noted. Over the past few years, global insurers have been increasingly considering infrastructure investments as 'core' investments as the stable and long-term cash flows of infrastructure assets naturally align with the liabilities of insurers. Additionally, infrastructure assets have defensive characteristics of high barriers to entry, strong pricing power, structural growth, and predictive cash flows, and listed infrastructure can provide investors with inflation-protected income and solid capital growth. <h2>Infra sector outperforming all</h2>For India, a strong government focus on the sector with large spending, supporting initiatives and encouraging policies, and improving governance has helped the infrastructure industry has come of age. This has helped the infra sector to outperform all other sectors, according to analysts. They said the high focus on retail loans, and the strategic reluctance to look at infrastructure for growth opportunities is proving detrimental for the shareholders of such companies. SBI, with its higher exposure to the infrastructure sector, has seen its stock gain 48% in the year (from Rs 592 to Rs 880.95 on Tuesday), while those of its private counterparts HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank have gained only in the range of (-)3%to 24%. Kotak and HDFC Banks with negligible exposure to the infrastructure sector are the worst performing, with their shares giving a negative return, stock exchange data showed. Kotak Mahindra Bank shares were at Rs 1,895 on June 18, 2023, and closed at Rs 1,805.20 on Tuesday. HDFC Bank closed at Rs 1,619.20 on BSE on Tuesday, down from Rs 1,679 a year back.

Exposure to India's infra sector helps LIC, SBI outshine peers

The <keyword id="19895371" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Congress" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Congress">Congress</keyword> party has levied fresh allegations against <keyword id="20914154" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="SEBI-Chairperson" source="keywords">SEBI Chairperson</keyword> <keyword id="19922107" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madhabi-Puri-Buch" source="keywords">Madhabi Puri Buch</keyword>, calling her a perfect case of the office for profit. This refers to a position that brings some financial gain, or advantage to the office holder, which in this case was Buch's position as a whole-time member of <keyword id="19901201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SEBI" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="SEBI" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="SEBI">SEBI</keyword>, and then post 2022, as the regulatory body's chairperson. In a press conference in New Delhi on Monday, Pawan Khera, Chairman, Media and Publicity Department, Congress, charged Buch of receiving regular income from private lender <keyword id="19900482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Bank" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="ICICI Bank" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="ICICI Bank">ICICI Bank</keyword> and <keyword id="47860" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Prudential" source="Orion">ICICI Prudential</keyword>, India's second largest asset management company, all while being the whole-time member and later Chairperson of the capital markets regulatory body. "She (SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch) between 2017 and 2024 was taking regular income of Rs 16 crore 80 lakhs from ICICI Bank," alleged Pawan Khera, at the press briefing. The congress spokesperson also alleged that Buch received a total of Rs 16.80 crore between 2017-18 to 2023-24, from ICICI Bank, ICICI Prudential, <keyword id="20043663" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ESOPs" source="keywords">ESOPs</keyword>, and <keyword id="19948097" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="TDS" source="keywords">TDS</keyword> on ESOPs. According to the Congress' allegations, in 2017-18 the SEBI chief allegedly received Rs 2.06 crore from ICICI Bank as salary and Rs 7 lakh from ICICI Prudential. In 2018-19, she received Rs 4.71 crore from ICICI Bank, Rs 2.17 lakh from ICICI Prudential. In 2019-20, Rs 1.21 crore from ICICI Bank and Rs 2.17 lakh from ICICI Prudential. In 2020-21, she was alleged of having received Rs 4.64 crore from ICICI Bank and Rs 2.17 lakh ICICI Prudential. In 2021-22, Congress asserted that the salary stopped from ICICI Bank but she continued to receive Rs 2.17 lakh from ICICI Prudential, also same year she received ESOP and TDS on ESOP from ICICI Bank. In 2022-23, she was alleged to have received Rs 4.44 lakh from ICICI Prudential, in addition to ESOP and TDS on ESOP, In 2023-24, she was alleged to have received Rs 2.17 from ICICI Prudential. The Congress further alleges that during this period, Buch also drew a salary from SEBI as a whole-time member and later as the Chairperson. Khera further added that several probes on ICICI Bank were being adjudicated during this period when Madhabi Puri Buch was receiving income from the group. He also cited unnamed reports to claim that the SEBI chief has relaxed norms for the ICICI Bank. "The person sitting at the top of the regulator is taking salaries from another entity," Khera alleged, adding it was a perfect case of "office for profit". "So we want to know why you were taking your salary from ICICI despite being a full-time member of SEBI?," Khera asked what service she as the SEBI Chairperson provided the bank when she was part of SEBI. "This is a direct violation of Section 54 of SEBI. Therefore, if Madhabi Puri Buch has any shame, she should resign from her post," Khera added. The SEBI Chief is yet to react to the charges made by the Congress in Monday's news conference. Madhabi Puri Buch was a whole-time member of SEBI from April 5, 2017 to October 4, 2021. Then on March 2, 2022, Madhabi Puri Buch became the Chairperson of SEBI. Recently, US-based short seller Hindenburg Research made allegations against her accusing her of conflict of interest. Last month, Hindenburg Research alleged that SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch and her husband Dhaval Buch had stakes in "both the obscure offshore entities used in the Admoney siphoning scandal." Hindenburg Research said it has made the new allegations based on documents provided by a whistleblower and investigations carried out by other entities. Soon after, the SEBI Chairperson and her husband, in their personal capacity, issued a detailed statement rejecting the allegations. In the joint statement released to the media they said, "In the context of allegations made in the Hindenburg Report dated August 10, 2024, against us, we would like to state that we strongly deny the baseless allegations and insinuations made in the report. The same are devoid of any truth. Our life and finances are an open book. All disclosures as required have already been furnished to SEBI over the years. We have no hesitation in disclosing any and all financial documents, including those that relate to the period when we were strictly private citizens, to any and every authority that may seek them. Further, in the interest of complete transparency, we would be issuing a detailed statement in due course." "It is unfortunate that Hindenburg Research against whom SEBI has taken an Enforcement action and issued a show cause notice has chosen to attempt character assassination in response to the same," the statement from Madhabi Buch and her husband Dhaval Buch read.

Congress alleges SEBI Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch of office for profit

The company's net profit in the quarter ended in September 2021 was at ₹ 445 crore. The net premium earned by the private sector insurer during July-September 2022-23 was up at ₹ 95.82 crore as against ₹ 92.86 crore in the same period of 2021-22, ICICI Pru said in a regulatory filing. However, total income decreased by 2.4 per cent to ₹ 226.42 crore from ₹ 231.88 crore in the year-ago period, mainly because of fall in investment income. The investment income in Q2FY23 was down by 6.1 per cent to ₹130.22 crore from ₹ 138.74 crore in Q2FY22. The decrease in investment income is primarily on account of the decrease in market value of the securities held, the company said. The value of new business (<keyword id="3781272" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vnb" source="Orion">VNB</keyword>), a key measure of profitability, posted strong growth of 25.1 per cent at ₹ 1,092 crore in the first half of FY2023, the insurer said. The company said its persistency ratios improved across all cohorts with the 13th month ratio, which is representative of the quality of business, standing at 85.9 per cent for H1-FY23, an improvement of 80 bps from year ago period. "On the back of this strong VNB growth and with a favourable premium base for the coming months, we believe we are on track to achieve our objective of doubling our FY2019 VNB by the end of this fiscal year," N S Kannan, MD &amp; CEO, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance said. He said the two focus areas of annuity and protection, which represent underserved needs of the country, have also done well in the period. The organization's recent study was undertaken to understand the overall emotion and tonality of digital marketing communications in the BFSI sector. The study found that empathy is the secret to a successful digital marketing campaign in the BFSI sector. Over the years, and especially in the last one years, we have come to realize that emotions play a big role in consumer decision-making. There have been several studies that have focused on the impact of empathy in consumer purchasing but not many have focused on the impact of empathy in Digital marketing. The study by Instoried was aimed at understanding what is the overall emotion and tonality of digital marketing communications in the BFSI sector and if there was a correlation between empathy and performance in digital marketing. They analyzed Search Ad copies and Social media posts between Jan to May 2021 to draw their conclusions. The report is composed with the help of the organization's proprietary sentiment analysis tool which is capable of showing the percentage of different tones and emotions in a provided piece of text. As a part of the study, around 500 Google Search advertisements that ran between Jan 2021 to May 2021 from various companies of the BFSI sector and their Google Search Ad Ranks were studied. Additionally, around 5000 social media posts from various companies of the BFSI sector along with their 'likes' were also taken into consideration. Instoried’s native AI tool was used to carry out this study. Instoried is built to predict the percentage of positive, negative, and neutral tones in any piece of text. Simultaneously the tool can also analyze the percentage of emotions such as joy, anger, fear, sadness, and surprise can. Thus, by simply pasting a text in the tool, one can check for the tonality and emotional quotient. The text advertisements and captions of social media posts were pasted to obtain the tone and emotion percentage. The tonality and emotions of the social media posts were then cross-correlated with their applause rate or performance i.e, Likes. The tonality and Emotion of the search ads were then cross-correlated with their performance i.e Search Ad Rank. The study observed that the positive tone percentage is higher than the negative tone percentage in most text advertisements. The dominant emotion in the text advertisements was joy followed by fear, sadness, anger, and with the least amount of surprise. The company performing the best on Instagram and Twitter with the most number of likes was <keyword id="75577" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Prudential-Life">ICICI Prudential Life</keyword>. New Delhi, Mar 22 () ICICI Prudential Life Insurance on Sunday urged its customers to avail its digital services and avoid visiting its offices as part of precautionary steps to contain the spread of coronavirus. In line with directives from authorities and efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19, the company's offices are operational but with limited staff, the company said in a statement. The company said its customers can place service requests through WhatsApp (+91 99206 67766), website, Chatbot LiGo, mobile app, email and call centres. On claims settlement, it said the process remains unaffected. Claimants can access digital channels to lodge death and/or health claims. The status on the claims too can be accessed digitally. "Death claims that qualify to be settled under the Claim For Sure initiative will be settled in one day after receipt of all mandatory documents. The sign up process for a silver ETF in India can be done through mutual fund managers, personal finance advisors and mutual fund platforms. Physical silver must be of standard 30 kg-bars with 99.9 percent purity (999 parts per thousand) conforming to London Bullion Market Association (LBMA).” The regulator has also asked the fund houses for physical verification of silver underlying the Silver ETF units. Needless to say, all metals and their value is affected by macroeconomic conditions of the world and the stock market. Edelweiss Mutual Fund on August 24 this year launched India’s first silver-gold ETF, combining the inflationary power of gold and usability of silver. The scheme will invest in both metals and adjust the percentage as the performance of markets determine. Mumbai, Jan 21 () Private sector life insurer ICICI Prudential Life on Tuesday reported a marginal increase in net income to Rs 302 crore, despite a 33 per cent rise in growth in new business income and a spike in margins, for the December 2019 quarter.
 Its new business income jumped to Rs 426 crore in the December quarter, up 33 per cent as compared with the year-ago period at Rs 320 crore.
 The company's net income remained flat at Rs 302 crore against Rs 297 crore in the December 2018 quarter, while a spike in protection portfolio helped it improve margin to 21 per cent in the reporting quarter from 17 per cent a year ago.
 The company's solvency ratio stood at a healthy 207 against the regulatory requirement of 150, said N S Kannan, chief executive officer and managing director of ICICI Prudential Life.
 He expressed optimism to double the new business income target of Rs 2,600 crore over the next three-four years, on the back of a healthy 25 per cent growth in this segmental income at Rs 1,135 crore as of December.
 "We are on track to achieve the targets set last fiscal as we have already grown 25 per cent in our value of new business from Rs 910 crore in December 2018 to Rs 1,135 crore in December 2019," Kannan told over phone, adding that this growth was driven by a healthy growth in protection portfolio which now contributes 14 per cent of total business, up from 9 per cent last year.
 Another growth driver was the falling share of unit-linked insurance plans, which fell to under 70 per cent now from over 80 per cent last year.
 "Cost-efficiencies and growth in protection products have helped us improve our margins to 21 per cent in the December quarter from 17 per cent a year ago," Kannan said.
 He also added that higher persistency in long-term policies, which is at an industry high of 64 per cent, is also helping the company trim customer acquisition cost.
 The company has one of the lowest cost structures in the industry with a cost-to-income ratio of 11.1 per cent, down from 12 per cent in the year-ago period.
 Its assets under management grew 6 per cent to Rs 1.72 lakh crore, a net incremental growth from Rs 1.65 lakh crore in the September quarter. On a nine-month basis, growth is better at 14.6 percent, Kannan said.
 New business premium grew 20 per cent from Rs 6,828 crore to Rs 8,173 crore in the reporting quarter, while protection annualised premium equivalent grew 66 per cent from Rs 461 crore to Rs 764 crore and annuity business grew 88 per cent from Rs 371 crore to Rs 697 crore on a nine-months basis.
 Kannan attributed the massive 66 per cent rise in protection business to innovative products, smoother customer on-boarding and easy claim settlement process.
 ICICI Prudential, which employs 14,000 on its rolls and another 1.8 lakh as agents, gets 53 per cent of its business from bancassurance, 22 per cent from agents, 12.5 per cent from direct business, 7 per cent from corporate agents and a meager 2-3 per cent from online sales, he said.
 During the quarter, its total premium income grew to Rs 8,264 crore from Rs 7,566 crore, while net premium income grew to Rs 8,131 crore, from Rs 7,483 crore, and the investment income grew fourfold to Rs 4,744 from Rs 1,186 crore.
 The company made a claim settlement of Rs 5,391 crore up from Rs 3,325 crore.
 The shares of the insurer, one of the few to have gone public, ended flat at Rs 489 on the BSE, against a 0.5 per cent correction in the Sensex. BEN HRS

Last week, we spoke to Amer Jaleel, Group CCO and Chairman of MullenLowe Lintas Group, who has been instrumental in creating seminal work for a lot of brands. Over the years, he has created some award-winning work for brands Google, OLX, Maruti Suzuki, ICICI Prudential and Bajaj, amongst many others. Jaleel gave us an Insider’s view into a few campaigns he holds close to his heart. <div type="javascript" title="Facebook" contenttype="Video"><cdata><![CDATA[]]></cdata></div> Tata Tea’s Jaago Re Tea brands, for the longest time, sold on the refreshing proposition of its product. However, it all changed in 2008 when Tata Tea came up with Jaago Re, a campaign that wanted people not just to wake up but to awaken. What had started as a campaign to encourage people to go vote in the 2009 elections has now broadened its appeal and today talks about a lot of other issues too. It was perhaps one of the first campaigns in India that asked consumers to act, giving birth to citizen activism. “What is the most important thing about Jaago Re is that it sparked off the trend of socially responsible work. And this is something that we at Lintas really take pride in, making brands participate in social improvement. We were noticed all around the world for this work and many people have emulated this,” shared Jaleel. R Balki was also a prominent part of the campaign, shared Jaleel, who helped strengthen the idea of the campaign by adding a strong logic to the thought. Once they discussed the idea, Balki said to Jaleel, “You know, you have got this business because it is impossible for anybody to deny this,” he remembered. “It was one of those memorable moments of my life,” he added with a smile. “The funny part is, we cracked the idea for a tea ad sitting in a coffee shop,” he laughed. The first ad also featured actor Pankaj Tripathy, who was just starting out at that point of time. While there had been many auditions, Jaleel remembers being blown away by Tripathy’s audition. “In Pankaj’s audition, when he acted the line ‘Hum aapka vote maange aaye hain,’ he says he has come to request for people’s votes but with his hand, he made a gesture that would denote he is here to grab your votes. That struck me and I told our director Amit Sharma that we should use this in the ad. And that’s how we got Pankaj on board. I am sure he would have reached where he is today even without this ad, because he is extremely talented, but I am glad we were on to him pretty early,” shared Jaleel. The campaign went on to create wonders for the brand and is till today considered to be a game-changer. Lifebuoy’s Help A Child Reach 5 - Gondappa Over the years, Lifebuoy has been doing a lot in terms of spreading awareness around the importance of hygiene and washing hands, not just in India but across the world. And it wanted to come up with a campaign to showcase some of the on-ground work it had been doing. Thesgora, a small village in Madhya Pradesh was infamous for having one of the highest rates of child diarrhoea cases in India. The idea behind the campaign was to bring to light how a simple act of convincing people to wash their hands had a massive impact. “Lifebuoy told us that they’ve been doing this amazing work but people don’t really know of this work. They wanted something that would celebrate the work they were doing while also helping them promote the idea further. The objective itself was so inspirational that we had to do something really special,” shared Jaleel. Sagar Kapoor, the current Chief Creative Officer at <keyword id="274876" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lowe-Lintas">Lowe Lintas</keyword>, told Jaleel that he had thought of an idea that wasn’t like the regular Lifebuoy ads that they did. He told Jaleel about something called ‘maanta’ which is something that people do if their wish comes true. Kapoor shared many examples of people fasting or rolling on the ground while on their way to temples. He was thinking of what would a person who’s child turned 5 do to celebrate the fact. “That’s when Sagar said that someone like him could say that he would walk on his hands to reach the temple and thank him for this gift. And the idea of walking on hands and Lifebuoy and hand-washing and the importance of that just struck like a rocket in my head. And I told Sagar that he had cracked something so special that his career was made,” shared Jaleel. The shoot was carried out in a place somewhere near Hubli in Karnataka, in scorching sunlight. The team had to select 2 actors, one who featured in the film, and another one on standby, considering how difficult it was for anyone to walk on his hands for long distances. The crew had to go to the spot thrice to complete the shoot as the first time the actor gave up as he couldn’t keep walking on his hands and the second time the shoot was brought to a halt by rains. The song used with the film was a Tamil song which wasn’t translated into any other languages and was yet able to cut through language barriers. The team had once gone to China where the film was showcased and the video moved many Chinese women to tears. We wanted to show that men are also glorious in their own ways. The most important thing that touches you in this ad is that men who do these beautiful things don’t really want it to be acknowledged,” explained Jaleel. And that is exactly what helped strike a chord with the audience with many people immediately identifying with many of the scenarios that have been showcased in the ad. The music of the campaign, composed by music director Shantanu Moitra and beautifully penned by lyricist Swanand Kirkire also added to the magic. “What is special about the ad is that it is a woman singing about a men but the men aren’t exactly looking for any appreciation. They were just going about doing the acts of care that they would anyway do, without anybody coming to know. When it comes to the song, I had a very different idea because Bande Acche Hain sounded a little Punjabi and in my head, the song was something more boisterous. However when I reached the studio and heard what Shantanu had created, it just melted me. I don’t know anybody who hasn’t got affected by the music at the first hearing,” said Jaleel. What also made the film special were the everyday instances that the situations drew from, making it very relatable and possibly the reason why it found so much love from the audience.

Mumbai, Jun 18 () Leading private sector life insurer ICICI Prudential has announced a 15 per cent higher bonus payout in FY2019-20, totalling Rs 788 crore. This is the 14th consecutive year of bonus payout by the insurer to its policyholders, and the current payout will benefit 9 lakh customers, the company said in a statement on Thursday. A bonus from an insurer is the share of profit generated by the company's participating policyholders' funds. All participating policies inforce as of March 2020 are eligible for bonus, which will be added to their guaranteed maturity or death benefit and help get one step closer to achieving the financial goals of policyholders. N S Kannan, the managing director &amp; chief executive of ICICI Prudential Life said the Rs 788 crore declared for 2019-20 is higher by 15 per cent over FY2018-19, will take them a step closer to achieving their financial goals. For FY2019-20, the company, the first private life insurer to cross the Rs 1-trillion assets-mark, had a claims settlement ratio of 97.8 per cent, took around 1.59 days to settle genuine claims and 99 per cent of claims were settled electronically. As of March 2020, the company had an AUM of Rs 1,52,968 crore and a total sum assured of around Rs 14.80 lakh crore. ICICI Prudential counter was trading down 0.23 per cent at Rs 395.40 on BSE against the index Sesnex gaining over 1.9 per cent at 1440 hrs. BEN MR
