Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

India Inc. stares at an earnings dearth in Q2, FMCG, auto, and consumer durables falter

Bloodbath on the D-Street entered its fifth straight day today, with <keyword id="19896381" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nifty" source="keywords">Nifty</keyword> dipping by 218 points to close the day at 24,180.80, much below the 25,000-mark. <keyword id="19896382" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sensex" source="keywords">Sensex</keyword> also dropped a massive 662 points to close the week at 79,402.29 points. Notably, this was the worst weekly run experienced by the markets over the last 14 months. Clearly, the markets are not in the mood to embrace the impending festivities. Only 12 out of 50 stocks on the Nifty50 advanced today, while the other 38 declined. It was no different on the BSE, where an astounding 3,101 stocks slipped during the day, while just 841 inched up. Smallcaps bore the biggest brunt of this drawdown, with the smallcap 100, 50, 250, and microcaps each sliding by over 2% during the day. Amidst sectors, media, metal, PSU banks, consumer durables, and oil and gas skidded over 2% each today. Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, explains that on a weekly basis, benchmarks had recorded five consecutive daily losses. Markets appear oversold, with RSI (Relative Strength Index) falling to 27 levels, its lowest in more than a year. Persistent foreign outflows with a record ~97000 crores so far in October, along with disappointing <keyword id="23378466" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q2-earnings" source="keywords">Q2 earnings</keyword>, have led to sharp valuation corrections in stocks with high multiples as investors adjust their expectations for future growth. Per media reports, investors saw their wealth diminish by a massive Rs 6.80 lakh crore today, largely due to a sharp, 18% dip in the shares of <keyword id="19901053" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndusInd-Bank" source="keywords">IndusInd Bank</keyword> and uncontrolled exodus of <keyword id="19900795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="foreign-investors" source="keywords">foreign investors</keyword>. Reportedly, IndusInd Bank reported a 40% decline in its net profits for the quarter ended September 30, 2024. "Another major factor contributing to this dip is disappointing earnings reports from Indian companies, especially in the consumption sector, which signal an economic slowdown, particularly in urban consumption," Santosh Meena, Head of Research at Swastika Investmart, said. Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Larsen &amp; Toubro, NTPC, Adani Ports, Tata Steel, Maruti, Bajaj Finance and Titan were also among the laggards. "Markets continued its downward trajectory as a broader selloff pulled down key benchmarks with Sensex ending below the crucial 80k mark. The dismal Q2 earnings so far has aggravated the investors' woes while persistent <keyword id="21360658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FII-selling" source="keywords">FII selling</keyword> continued to create havoc in the market," said Prashanth Tapse, Senior VP (Research), Mehta Equities Ltd. On October 24, 2024, i.e. yesterday, foreign investors offloaded a massive Rs 5,062.45 worth of equities, while domestic investors remained net buyers, purchasing around Rs 3,620.47 crore worth of shares. Thus far in October, foreign investors have pulled out a record Rs 97,205.42 crore from Indian markets. Shrikant Chouhan, Head Equity Research, Kotak Securities expects that the "market sentiment will continue to be weighed down by weaker-than-expected Q2FY25 earnings prints and continued weak commentary. FPI flows are expected to remain volatile in the days to come". "Indian equity markets corrected sharply this week as FII continued with selling in Indian markets. Benchmark indices (Nifty 50 and Sensex 30) declined between 2-3% this week. The midcap and the <keyword id="20187540" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="smallcap-stocks" source="keywords">smallcap stocks</keyword> witnessed selling pressure. As a result, the BSE Midcap and the BSE Smallcap indices underperformed the larger peers and were down between 5-8% on a weekly basis. All the sectoral indices ended the week in the red with multiple indices seeing a weekly fall in excess of 6%", added Chouhan Per Chouhan, in the coming weeks, key events that will determine the market's course of action include the US elections and the US FOMC meet. Stock specific action will continue based on Q2FY25 financial performance and management commentary. Garg also anticipates that in the near term, the markets will trade rangebound. Massacre continues on Sensex and Nifty as foreign investors withdraw Rs 97,205.42 crore in October

Shares of IT behemoth and the country's fourth-largest IT company, <keyword id="19945574" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wipro" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Wipro" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, surged nearly 4% today after the company's board of directors approved a 1:1 <keyword id="20354022" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bonus-issue" source="keywords">bonus issue</keyword>. This also comes on the back of positive <keyword id="21421885" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Q2-results" source="keywords">Q2 results</keyword> declared by the company yesterday. The company's deal book saw a 28.8% QoQ and 16.8% YoY growth as its revenue grew to Rs 22,300 crore during the quarter and profits jumped to Rs 3,210 crore during the second quarter of FY25. Yesterday, the company posted a solid 21.2% YoY rise in its consolidated net profits, which stood at Rs 2,646.3 crore in the year-ago period. The company's revenue from the <keyword id="20069374" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-services" source="keywords">IT services</keyword> segment was at $2660.1 million, an increase of 1.3% QoQ and a decrease of 2.0% YoY. For the quarter ending December 31, 2024, the company expects revenue from its IT Services business segment to be in the range of $2,607 million to $2,660 million. Wipro CEO and MD Srini Pallia said that Q2 was driven by strong execution, which enabled the Bengaluru-based firm to meet its expectations for <keyword id="19965932" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="revenue-growth" source="keywords">revenue growth</keyword>, bookings, and margins. "We continued to expand our top accounts; large deal bookings surpassed $1 billion once again, and Capco maintained its momentum for another consecutive quarter. We grew in three out of four markets, as well as in <keyword id="19910880" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BFSI" source="keywords">BFSI</keyword>, consumer, technology, and communications sectors," he said. Total bookings for the quarter stood at $3,561 million, while large deal bookings were at $1,489 million, an increase of 28.8% QoQ and 16.8% YoY. The company's revenue from operations for the reporting quarter took a hit and stood at Rs 22,301.6 crore, a slight decline from Rs 22,515.9 crore in the year ago period. Pallia further noted that the company's revenue for the October-December quarter is expected to be affected by seasonal furloughs and fewer working days. As for sectoral contribution to the quarter's revenue, a maximum of 34.8% came from banking, financial services, and insurance. On the other end of the spectrum, manufacturing contributed the least at 6.2%. While the record date for bonus issue will be announced later, the credit of these bonus shares, priced at Rs 2 each, will be completed by December 15, 2024. Brokerage firm <keyword id="19969149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nomura" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Nomura" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Nomura">Nomura</keyword> accords a "buy" rating to Wipro, with a target price of Rs 680/share. As of 2:50 pm today, the stock was trading at Rs 552.50.

Wipro announces 1:1 bonus issue; share surges 4% on the back of strong Q2 results

New Delhi: As the earnings season for the second quarter of FY25 unfolds, <keyword id="19959986" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-sector-banks" source="keywords">public sector banks</keyword> (PSBs) are expected to see a slight dip in profits compared to the previous quarter, according to a report by <keyword id="19896146" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Motilal-Oswal" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Motilal Oswal" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="Motilal Oswal">Motilal Oswal</keyword>. The report estimates that PSBs' Profit After Tax (PAT) will decline by 0.6 per cent quarter-on-quarter (QoQ), while showing a stronger year-on-year (YoY) growth of 17.2 per cent. "We estimate PSBs to report moderate <keyword id="19899597" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="earnings-growth" source="keywords">earnings growth</keyword> of 17.2 pc YoY/ a decline of 0.6 pc QoQ in 2QFY25," the report stated. The slower pace of growth can be attributed to flat net interest margins (NIMs) and a slight increase in loan loss provisions (LLP). The <keyword id="20171160" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Net-Interest-Income" source="keywords">Net Interest Income</keyword> (NII) for PSBs is expected to grow by around 6 per cent YoY, although interest margins are likely to remain under pressure. Despite these near-term challenges, the report suggests that public sector banks are on track to post a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15 per cent between FY24 and FY26, pointing to sustained long-term growth. In the private sector banking space, the report forecasts mixed results for the same quarter. For private banks under the coverage, Pre-Provision Operating Profit (PPoP) is expected to grow by 12 per cent YoY and 1 per cent QoQ. However, PAT growth is predicted to be more modest, increasing by 5 per cent YoY and 0.6 per cent QoQ. "For our private bank coverage universe, we estimate a PPoP growth of 12 pc YoY/1 pc QoQ and a PAT growth of 5 pc YoY/0.6 pc QoQ in 2QFY25," the report added. Looking ahead, private sector banks are expected to experience steady profitability growth, with earnings projected to grow at a CAGR of 12.4 per cent over FY24-FY26. Overall, while both public and private sector banks may face moderate growth in the second quarter due to margin pressures and higher provisions, their long-term earnings prospects remain positive. In the morning trade, the 30-share BSE Sensex scaled the 85,000 level, jumping 234.62 points or 0.27% to scale a new all-time intra-day peak of 85,163.23. The index, however, hit a low of 84,716.07 in the afternoon session due to profit-taking at record levels. Selling in <keyword id="20002610" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hindustan-Unilever" source="keywords">Hindustan Unilever</keyword>, Kotak Mahindra Bank and <keyword id="19900482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Bank" source="keywords">ICICI Bank</keyword> dragged the key index from the day's highs. The Nifty eked out gains of 1.35 points or 0.01% to close at a fresh high of 25,940.40. During the day, it climbed 72.5 points or 0.27% to hit a new record intra-day high of 26,011.55. Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services said, "Domestic benchmarks are attempting to sustain new highs, driven by the US Fed's aggressive rate cut. Meanwhile, the Chinese central bank's rate cut, and additional stimulus measures have positively influenced global investor sentiment, resulting in gains for domestic metal stocks." Conversely, FMCG and banking stocks exhibited declines due to profit-booking at higher levels, he said, adding that in the near term, strong inflows from FIIs, driven by the US Fed's dovish outlook and expectations of a rate cut by the RBI in October, are expected to maintain momentum. From the 30 Sensex firms, Hindustan Unilever, UltraTech Cement, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IndusInd Bank, Titan, Nestle, Bajaj Finance and Asian Paints were among the biggest laggards. Tata Steel, Power Grid, Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra and JSW Steel were among the gainers. The BSE midcap gauge climbed 0.21% while the smallcap index dipped 0.04%. Among the indices, FMCG declined by 0.75%, telecommunication (0.57%), services (0.45%), financial services (0.40%), consumer durables (0.31%) and bankex (0.30%). “Technically, the index is oscillating within a rising channel and is trading near the upper trend line resistance of the channel pattern, which is around the range of 25,900-26,000 levels, making them a strong hurdle in the short term. Therefore, on the upside, 26,000 will act as an immediate hurdle for Nifty. If the index sustains above 26,000 it could test the levels of 26,200. On the downside, 25,600 will serve as strong support for the index,” said Hrishikesh Yedve, AVP Technical and Derivatives Research, Asit C. Mehta Investment Interrmediates. Metal surged 2.78%, power jumped 1.38%, utilities (1.18%), commodities (0.95%) and industrials (0.47%). In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and Hong Kong settled in the positive territory. Shanghai and Hong Kong markets ended significantly higher. European markets were trading in the green. The US markets ended higher on Monday. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) bought equities worth ₹404.42 crore on Monday, according to exchange data. S&amp;P Global Ratings on Tuesday retained India's growth forecast at 6.8% for the current fiscal and said it expects the RBI to start cutting interest rates in its October monetary policy review. Global oil benchmark Brent crude jumped 2.35% to $75.64 a barrel. Rallying for the third day running on Monday, the BSE benchmark jumped 384.30 points or 0.45% to settle at an all-time high of 84,928.61. According to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC), Cupertino tech giant Apple posted its highest quarterly shipments in India at 4 million units, led by iPhone 15 and iPhone 13. “Growth in the biggest quarter of the year was fueled by attractive discounts, multiple financing options, extended device warranty and cashback/bank offers across both online/offline channels. market</h2>Vivo has emerged as the market leader in Q3 2024, with a 15.8% market share, up from a 13.9% market share in Q3 2023. This marks the third consecutive quarter where the smartphone maker has led the Indian smartphone market. Vivo’s shipments have increased by 20% year-on-year. Oppo is second, with a 13.9% market share in Q3 2024, up from a 9.9% market share in Q3 2023. The company’s shipments have increased by 47.6% year-on-year. Samsung, which led the Indian smartphone market in Q3 2023 with a market share of 16.2% has been pushed down to the third spot with a 12.3% market share. The company’s shipments have declined by 19.7% year-on-year. Other notable changes include the increase in Apple’s market share from 5.7% to 8.2%, a decline in OnePlus’ market share from 6.2% to 3.6% and a 149% year-on-year increase in shipments recorded by Motorola. <h2>5G shipments on the rise</h2>The share of 5G shipments increased to 83% in Q3 2024, up from 57% in Q3 2023. Of the 46 million smartphones shipped, 38 million were 5G smartphones. This has been fueled by the decline in the average selling price (ASP) of 5G smartphones. The ASP has by 20% to $292 (approx. ₹24,650). “Cyclical dip in demand after the festive period and high shipments in 3Q24 will result in higher stock levels across channels in 4Q24. Thus, India's smartphone market is expected to exit 2024 with a low single-digit annual growth,” said Navkendar Singh, AVP – Devices Research, IDC. Indian smartphone shipments grow 5.6% in Q3 2024, Vivo leads the market

The second largest private sector lender posted a 23.6 per cent rise in standalone net profit for the third quarter of the current fiscal to Rs 10,272 crore. The bank's core net interest income was up 13.4 per cent to Rs 18,678 crore, on the back of net interest margin narrowing to 4.43 per cent and the domestic advances growth coming at 18.8 per cent. The bank's other income grew 19.8 per cent to Rs 5,975 crore during the reporting quarter. Its provisions came down to Rs 1,049.37 crore from the Rs 2,257.44 crore in the year-ago period, helping the profit growth.

Later, it bounced back 178.3 points or 0.21 per cent to hit a high of 81,231.49 but gave up gains towards the end. The NSE Nifty edged up 11.65 points or 0.05 per cent to close at 24,823.15 registering gains for the seventh session in a row. From the Sensex pack, Tata Motors, Sun Pharmaceutical, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finserv, ICICI Bank, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra and JSW Steel were the gainers. Sensex, Nifty edge up in volatile trade ahead of US Fed chief speech

The bank had reported a net loss of Rs 5,728 crore in the March quarter of 2022-23 fiscal. Total income rose to Rs 35,990 crore in the March quarter of 2023-24 fiscal, from Rs 28,758 crore in the year-ago period. The bank's Net Interest Income (NII) grew 11 per cent Year-on-Year (YoY) to Rs 13,089 crore. For 2023-24 fiscal, the net profit jumped 160 per cent to Rs 24,861 crore. The numbers for the March quarter of 2022-23 fiscal and the full fiscal include the impact of exceptional items relating to the <keyword id="19941660" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="citibank" source="keywords">Citibank</keyword> business acquisition, Axis Bank said. Its balance sheet grew 12 per cent YoY to Rs 14,77,209 crore as on March 31, 2024. The bank issued 1.24 million new credit cards in the March quarter of FY24 and has been one of the highest credit card issuers in the country over the last nine quarters, Axis Bank said in a regulatory filing. The bank's board has recommended a dividend of Re 1 per equity share of the face value of Rs 2 per equity share for FY24. Shares of Axis Bank settled at Rs 1,063.70 apiece, up 0.69 per cent over the previous close on the BSE. Axis Bank posts net profit of ₹7,129 cr in March quarter

Indian tech major <keyword id="19945574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Wipro" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Wipro">Wipro</keyword> released its Q1FY25 results, beating D-street estimates. The company's revenue from operations during the quarter stood at $2.63 billion, a dip of 4.9% YoY, in constant currency terms. The company's operating margin for <keyword id="20069374" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IT-services" source="keywords">IT services</keyword> for the quarter stood at 16.5%, seeing a 0.4% YoY dip. The revenue from IT services during April-June 2024 was $2,625.9 million, witnessing a 5.5% YoY fall. For the next quarter (ending September 2024), the company hopes for its IT Services business segment to be in the range of $2,600 million to $2,652 million, per its press release. <h2>Revenue breakdown</h2>The company's gross revenue for the quarter stood at Rs 219.6 billion, up 3.8% on YoY basis. At 34% of the total quarterly revenue, banking, financial services &amp; insurance was the company's biggest revenue contributor segment, followed by communication (3.8%), consumer (19.2%), technology (11.5%), health (13.9%), manufacturing (6.4%) and energy, natural resources and utilities making up 11% of the total revenue. In terms of geographies, over 60% stemmed from the Americas, while 27.6% came from Europe and 10.7% came from APMEA (<keyword id="20038550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="asia-pacific" source="keywords">Asia Pacific</keyword>, India, Middle East &amp; Africa). However, the company's large deals TCV (total contract value) for the quarter was $1.2 billion, down 3.6% YoY, while total bookings for the quarter were $3,284 million. However, Wipro's <keyword id="20508950" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Net-income" source="keywords">net income</keyword> for the quarter stood at Rs 30.0 billion, up by 4.6% YoY. <h2>Customer segmentation</h2>As far as customer concentration goes, the top 1% of company's clients contribute 4% to its revenue, while the top 5 and top 10 make up for 13.6% and 22.5% of the revenue mix, respectively. As of June 30, 2023, the company's headcount was 2,34,391 with a <keyword id="22473955" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="voluntary-attrition" source="keywords">voluntary attrition</keyword> rate at 14.1% During the previous quarter, the company gained 43 new customers, while obtaining 99.7% of its revenue from its existing ones. The number of active customers associated with the company stood at 1,364, down from 1,444 in the year ago period. In terms of customer size, Wipro's clientele for Q1FY25 stood at 735 (customers over $1 million), 407 (customers over $3 million) and 301 (customers over $5 million). However, this was slightly down from their base in Q1FY24, where the company had 769 customers worth over $1 million, 444 customers over $3 million and 319 customers over $5 million. Wipro Q1FY25 results: Net income jumps 4.6% YoY to Rs 30 billion, operating margin at 16.5%

Imagine this. You have a younger sibling you’re mighty envious of. And why not? Unlike you, they seem to enjoy all the freedom and money in the world. They party like there’s no tomorrow, and here you are, stuck in a boring, ultra-disciplined but responsible routine that feels completely devoid of any independence, and mostly, funds. But of late, things are changing. This sibling is in massive trouble and just cannot escape the parent’s wrath anymore. Long story short, the party is over, and it is time to go back home. The rising defaults on this sibling’s part have now begun pulling the entire house down, thereby attracting the regulator’s ire. <h2>The Wild West of microfinance and unsecured loans</h2>It's hard to ignore the issues with microfinance and unsecured loans in India. Many saw them as a small gamble and ignored the rising defaults much like the younger siblings’ tantrums, and now they find themselves in hot waters. The skyrocketing instances of non-payments aren't a micro-issue anymore and are threatening the stability of the entire banking system. In the quarter ended September 30, 2024, 5 of India’s 8 largest private sector <keyword id="19934118" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="banks" source="keywords">banks</keyword> reported a steep rise in their bad loan book, mostly thanks to microfinance loans. Some banks, in a bid to strengthen their fortress against these <keyword id="142154" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="bad-loans" source="Orion">bad loans</keyword>, have significantly upped their provisions. For instance, <keyword id="46717" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndusInd-bank" source="Orion">IndusInd Bank</keyword> set aside Rs 525 crore during July and September 2024 to battle the menace of defaults on microfinance loans, which make up about 9% of its total loan book. See, banks rely heavily on their interest income, which they earn from advancing loans. Any loan where the borrower has not paid interest to the bank or defaulted for 90 days or more becomes bad, i.e., an <keyword id="79363" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="npa" source="Orion">NPA</keyword>, or non-performing asset for the bank. And who likes things going bad? Simply put, there has been a steep rise in three areas, much to the dislike of banks and MFIs (micro-finance institutions). But hey, it's mostly their doing! <ol><li>GNPA ratio (gross net performing assets): The quantum of non-performing assets a bank has in proportion to its total assets.</li><li>Provision: The amount banks set aside to take care of such NPAs.</li><li>Slippage ratio: The rate at which good girls go bad, or the speed at which good loans turn into NPAs</li></ol>But how are these plaguing the Indian banking sector? And what does the road ahead look like? We decode it for you. <h2> Microfinance: A not-so-micro-menace</h2>Microfinance loans were initially brought forth for low-income households and individuals, i.e. for those who might not generally have access to traditional ways of credit, like bank loans and more. They don’t require collateral or an asset to be pledged in lieu of the loan, making it a tad bit easier for borrowers. As of June 2024, the amount of outstanding loans in the microfinance industry stood at a staggering Rs 4,20,256 crore. Of this, NBFC-MFIs accounted for 40% and banks made for 33% of these. In 2022, <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBI" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>, in a bid to inspire some competition in this space, did something radical-they did away with the ceiling on how much interest MFIs could charge their customers. Previously, MFIs could add up to 12% to their cost of acquiring funds to determine the final interest rate chargeable to the consumer. So, assuming that Bank A incurs a 5% cost to acquire funds for further loaning, A could charge up to 17% interest from the end consumer. So, interest rates were in the hands of MFIs, and boy, did they have a gala time with it. Instead of spurring some healthy competition, as RBI expected, MFIs and banks went rogue and all guns blazing, competing for the title of “Who will charge the highest interest?” Recently, RBI banned 4 microfinance institutions (MFIs), namely Asirvad Micro Finance Limited, Arohan Financial Services Limited, DMI Finance Private Limited, and Navi Finserv, from disbursing loans effective October 21, 2024. Why? Because they were charging 14% extra interest over their original cost of funds. To maintain their loan books (and pockets), banks and NBFCs resorted to shady practices like netting off loans, which RBI has now advised MFIs against. Here, lenders allow borrowers to settle a previous outstanding loan by issuing them a new loan! As crazy as it sounds, it helped banks to report less of their total assets as NPAs, since the new credit would cover pending installments of the borrower’s previous loan. Then there was the issue of borrowers overleveraging, i.e. taking multiple loans using different IDs from various lenders and then failing to honor any of them. The consequence? Banks and NBFCs end up with massive NPAs. Data from credit bureaus suggests that over the last quarter, there was a 17.2% rise in the number of borrowers who had 5 or more active loans at the same time. <h2>Growth &gt; Caution</h2>It's an age-old tale unfolding yet again in India’s banking sector- Icarus flew too close to the sun and eventually, fell to its death. Between April and June 2024, NBFCs microfinance portfolio jumped by 2.7%. If you see this in terms of loan sources, microfinance loans issued by banks grew by 11.2% in Q1FY25. But the same portfolio in NBFCs swelled by almost double-23.9%. While most of these loans had an average ticket size between Rs 30,000-50,000, there was a sharp spike in the number of loans that had a ticket size of Rs 80,000 or more. Data suggests that as of March 2024, more than 12% of all microfinance borrowers had over 4 or more active loans. In dating parlance, this is a classic case of borrowers going polyamorous, minus the honesty and transparency. Not the best of situations, you'd agree! <h2>Will banks and NBFCs stand up to this stress?</h2>If their results for Q2FY25 are to be believed, NBFCs are not handling the pressure all that well. Or even slightly well. Only a few banks like Bank of Baroda (BoB), ICICI, and Indian Bank were up for the battle, even witnessing a decline in their loan delinquencies. Some others, like IndusInd Bank, saw their stock dip by a massive 16.2% over the last 5 days. Its slippages in the previous quarter burgeoned from Rs 15.3 billion in Q1FY25 to Rs 17.9 billion in Q2. As a result, the bank pushed a staggeringly high amount of money to create an NPA cushion for itself. While its management has highlighted its preference for secured lending, that was hardly reflected in its actions during the quarter, where growth in unsecured personal loans remained exceptionally high at over 7% on a QoQ basis. Turns out, only 44% of customers in IndusInd Banks’ microfinance loan portfolio were exclusive to it. The rest 47% were, you guessed it right-polyamorous! 27% had borrowed from another lender as well, apart from IndusInd Bank, while 20% were those who had outstanding loans with two other lenders, apart from IndusInd Bank. IndusInd Bank’s credit card segment did not miss the NPA bus and accounted for 7-8% of its GNPAs. Canara Bank’s total slippages during the previous quarter jumped to Rs 11.1 billion, up by 24.7% QoQ, and making up for 3.6% of its total loans. As for Bandhan Bank, its <keyword id="763994" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gross-NPA" source="Orion">gross NPA</keyword> for Q2FY25 inched up on a QoQ basis, up from 4.23% in Q1, to 4.68% in the second quarter. <keyword id="62152" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IDFC-bank" source="Orion">IDFC Bank</keyword>’s heavy provisioning for its NPAs marred its profits significantly, causing its PAT (profit after tax) to dip by 73% on a YoY basis. Data from ICRA Analytics suggest that the AUM (asset under management) growth in microfinance loans and unsecured (personal and business) loans by the NBFCs will moderate to 10-12% and 19-21%, respectively, in FY2025 compared to 30% and 38%, in FY2024. Says A M Karthik, Senior Vice President &amp; Co-Group Head, Financial Sector Ratings, ICRA, “As bank funds constitute a larger share in the overall funding of NBFCs, a slower credit flow from banks to the NBFCs will compress their AUM growth. The NBFCs in unsecured and digital lending businesses shall face a higher squeeze in funding compared to others, and the unsecured lending space will continue to be a source of stress in the near term.” There has been uninhibited growth in unsecured loans, apart from just the microfinance segment. For instance, Axis Bank’s gross slippages jumped by Rs 4,443 crore, largely thanks to its unsecured business. The same is the case with Yes Bank, which saw 35–40% of its retail slippages emerging from the unsecured loan portfolio. Kotak Mahindra Bank was also quick to follow Yes Bank’s suit, with around 35%-40% of its slippages coming from credit cards. <h2>How is the road ahead?</h2>While RBI has just cracked its whip and served a warning at the moment, experts at Morgan Stanley believe that more changes (read regulatory lashes) are underway. Moreover, with both festive and wedding seasons underway in our country, unsecured lending might pick up momentum, much to the disdain of the calibrated approach banks have been taking towards it so far. But if the situation doesn't improve, RBI will not waste any time in becoming the typical tyrannical Bollywood headmaster who runs his dominion with an iron fist and takes things (and ceiling rates) into their own hands. However, that's a story for another day.
