New Delhi, Apr 6 () India needs greater access to the US market to tie down its export contraction, with the coronavirus pandemic causing massive supply disruptions that will have bearing on the contracts entered into between the governments and private sectors of both nations, the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce said on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump on Saturday held a detailed discussion on the situation arising out of the coronavirus outbreak and resolved to deploy the full strength of the India-US partnership to fight the pandemic. Pointing out that the number of infections and casualties in the US is increasing, Lalit Bhasin, president of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, Northern Regional Council (IACC-NIC), said India should extend all "possible help" to combat the spread of the virus since the US recovery and its economy bouncing back are critical to an early global economic pick-up. The US, China, and India together contribute more than 70 per cent of the global trade. "The earliest recovery of these economies can spur global growth at a faster pace and in that process, all countries-developed, developing and least developed will be beneficiaries," he added. Bhasin said India needs considerable accommodation from the US to come out of the COVID-19 backlash and to pep up its demand and supply side. "The World Bank's assistance of USD 1 billion to India, which was announced recently, can partly help bridge the resource gap. India needs greater market access to the US to tie down its export contraction," he added. Bhasin said coronavirus has led to massive supply disruptions in both ways that will have bearing on the contract entered between the governments and private sectors. He said India and the US can be partners in evolving a cure for coronavirus. India has a strong indigenous healthcare system, that includes Yoga and Ayurveda, which can combine with advanced clinical practices of the US to develop a cure and preventive care for COVID-19. India needs greater access to US market to curb coronavirus-induced export contraction: IACC

India and the US have enjoyed a warm relationship in the past, but few recent hiccups have cast aspersions on these strategic trade partners’ relationships. We discussed the issue with Asoke Laha, National President of Indo American Chamber of Commerce (<keyword id="77185" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IACC">IACC</keyword>) and Founder, President and CEO of <keyword id="2621954" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Interra-Information-Technologies">Interra Information Technologies</keyword>, and he had some interesting insights into the Indo-US trade ties and issues that plague the Indian IT sector. Here are some excerpts: 
 
India and the US resolved their differences over Trade Facilitation Agreement, which ended the impasse at the WTO. How do you foresee for Indo-US relations from here on? 
 
It’s a positive news. I see it as an opportunity for both the countries to begin work in several areas. I mean if the US and China could sign the Climate deal after such a long time, it further strengthens the possibility of both India and the US to do many things together that were unimaginable earlier. 
 
The US has always been interested in education and infrastructure sectors in India. Apart from these sectors, which are the other sectors that you think the US can share its expertise with India? 
 
One sector that I feel the US can share its expertise in is the manufacturing sector. Prime Minister Modi has been emphasizing on the growth of this sector. The US can share its knowledge in other segments such as equipments, robotics, technology and artificial intelligence. 
 
See, China has earlier expressed their desire to develop as the manufacturing hub. But the US would not want it as it would mean China’s dominance over the region. The US would not allow China to become the sole manufacturing hub in Asia for its own strategic reasons. Thus, 
India’s manufacturing sector has a great chance of developing. 
 
The US can also share its expertise in sectors such as automation, which is a key requirement in the manufacturing sector, as it cuts down the cost. 
 
Another sector is aviation. The Indian aviation industry is still growing and has a great potential to be one of the greatest market across the globe. Earlier, the environment was not there, so it could not grow much. But now, things have changed. We can see a lot of foreign players interested in investing in the sector including the Maintenance and Repair Overhaul (MRO) segment. India has the potential to cater to the infrastructural needs of various players in the global industry. 
 
India is now laying greater emphasis on its manufacturing sector. According to you, which are the areas that need substantial improvement before we can think of becoming a manufacturing hub? 
 
The biggest problem here is the attitude of the people. The fact that we have a casual attitude towards everything makes it very difficult for the county, as a whole, to grow as a manufacturing hub. Most people in India do not follow the deadline set by them. Besides, the quality of the goods produced is inferior and low. We also lack discipline that one can find in China. These are some of the areas, which if worked on, can help us grow by leaps and bounds. 
 
IPR issue has been a major bone of contention between India and the US. Of course, following PM Modi’s US visit, a panel was set up to discuss the way forward, but we haven’t seen anything concrete yet. What’s your take on the same? 
 
I believe IPR is a fundamental issue and is not just between the US and India. We have to understand that India lacks an investment culture. Product development is a high risk area and hence, we do not see much being done there. If we carefully look at it, then hardly any new product is ever produced in India. All this is because financing is a major issue for our manufacturers. 
 
Let us look at China. China offers 100% guarantee to the manufacturers that their research and technology is not stolen by their domestic companies. I have tried to do that in my company. 
 
I will tell you an instance when my company was developing a semi-product for a US client. The client liked the end product and signed a half a million dollar contract with us. But here comes the twist. Later, the guy who was working on that project informed me that he wanted to resign. I tried to talk him out for a few days but when it failed, I asked him to share the code and all other information about the product that he had developed as it was a company property. But to my utter shock, he told me that he did not develop anything. Later I found out that he had approached my client and had offered to do the job for half the price that we had quoted. So you see, IPR is a fundamental issue and every company has the right to protect its research, technology and other valuables that can be stolen. 
 
We have a lot of start-ups coming up in the India. How do you see Indian companies vis-à-vis their counterpart in the US. Do you feel Indian companies can survive in the US market, if given the opportunity? 
 
I think a lot of start-ups cannot survive in the global market because they are not original, but a copy of what is already there in the international market. And like I had mentioned earlier, the quality of products is not up to the mark, so I feel it will be difficult for Indian companies to totally dominate the US market. Just look at Japanese or Korean auto products. They offer world class quality and hence, fare well. So unless, Indian companies produce superior quality products, I don’t think they can compete in the US market. But India can invest in already established American companies or buy them out. In terms of sectors, I believe India can invest in IT, medicine sectors there. 
 
You are a global IT player yourself. What are the issues that you believe the IT industry in India should address? 
 
The Indian IT industry is considered to be low-cost. It used to be called the software factory or back-end office for large IT corporations across the world. I personally believe, the quality of product delivered, communication skills and delivery are the weak points. There is lack of discipline again, and we can find many Indian IT companies extending the deadlines. Our DNA is not being punctual. Besides, labour laws needs to be stricter. If these issues are addressed, the Indian IT industry will be way ahead in the race. 
 
Talking about exports to the US, could you please tell us what are the key pointers that any Indian exporter needs to remember while doing business in the US? 
 
I think the exporter first needs to know the US law in order to export anything to that country. The US authorities are very strict about the quality of the goods they import; therefore, it is extremely important for us to follow their quality standards. I will tell you an incident wherein an Indian readymade garment exporter had sent a consignment. During the sample check, one of the samples was not up to the prescribed standard. The US authorities rejected the entire consignment. So you see, quality is extremely important. 
 
Apart from this, documentation is very important. The exporters should know what all documents are required and should posses all the requisite documents. These are just some basic tips that any exporter, who wants to export to the US market, must remember. 
 
Lastly, the Indo-US trade is pegged at $63 billion. What according to you can the government do to push up this number? Where do you see the bilateral trade at in the next five years? 
 
I see the trade touching $500 billion in the next five years. Our chamber has a concrete plan to move forward and support the new government in boosting the relations between India and the US. We are also working with the Small and Medium Enterprises sector, a sector that we feel can tremendously boost our trade ties with the US. We will also be sending our delegation to the US and vice-versa, and organize events to create platforms for open communication between Indian and American companies.

India Lacks Discipline: Asoke Laha

India is set to become the third largest aviation market in the next twenty years by adding 266 million passengers, thus taking over the United Kingdom. 
	 “Currently the ninth largest market, India will see a total of 367 million passengers by 2034, an extra 266 million annual passengers compared to today. It is an exciting prospect to think that in the next 20 years, more than twice as many passengers as today will have the chance to fly,” said Tony Tyler, director general and CEO of International Air Transport Association (<keyword id="64233" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IATA">IATA</keyword>). 
	 
	He added, “Air connectivity on this scale will help transform economic opportunities for millions of people. At present, aviation helps sustain 58 million jobs and $2.4 trillion in economic activity. In 20 years’ time we can expect the global aviation to be supporting around 105 million jobs and $6 trillion in GDP”. 
	 
	According to the findings of IATA, the Indian domestic aviation market is pegged to grow at 6.9% while adding 159 million extra passengers on its domestic routes. 
	 
	At the 10th Indo-US Economic Summit organized by Indo America Chambers of Commerce, experts suggested that the <keyword id="34987" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="aviation-industry">aviation industry</keyword> in India could also further cement ties between the two countries. However, for this to be achieved, India will have to overcome several challenges. 
	 “Concession agreements for airports being in the nascent stage are plagued with issues pertaining to provisions relating to delay, change in law termination due to default, role of regulatory authorities and dispute resolution. It is hoped that with the passage of time, the government will address these issues,” said Dr. <keyword id="346396" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lalit-Bhasin">Lalit Bhasin</keyword>, regional president of <keyword id="77185" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IACC">IACC</keyword>. 
	 Apart from these issues, the aviation industry is marred by high airport costs, which resulted in several international airlines reducing their frequency of flights from the airports. “Delhi and Mumbai airports are running high on costs, which is being recovered from the carriers. This is not good as the carriers are already paying off higher taxes on aviation turbine fuel (ATF),” said <keyword id="159659" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amber-Dubey">Amber Dubey</keyword>, Head and Partner, Aerospace and Defence, KPMG at the event. 
	 
	Besides, the industry is also facing shortage of trained aviation specialists. “Should that not be the case, India’s status among countries in the aviation scheme could be downgraded and there would be restrictions on the ability of Indian carriers to add flights to international destinations,” added Bhasin.

India Set To
Become Third Largest Aviation Market In Next 20 Years

At a time when the world is preparing for possible <keyword id="154740" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cyber-warfare">cyber warfare</keyword>, India is not fully prepared for cyber attacks in defense and security. According to studies done by various research organizations, cyber attacks on Indian government organizations rose by an alarming rate of 136% last year. 
	 
	“India is way behind the international standards of defence against cyber attacks practiced across the world,” said Ashish Soni, founder and CEO of Orkash Services Pvt Ltd, a high technology, market intelligence and operational risk management services company, at the 10th Indo-US Economic Summit organized by Indo America Chamber of Commerce (<keyword id="77185" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IACC">IACC</keyword>). 
	 
	On the other hand, market reports suggested that the cyber attacks on financial services organizations surged by 126% last year. “According to reports, sophisticated cyber assaults like ransomware and spear-phishing has cost Indian individuals and companies some $4 billion,” said Asoke K Laha, National President of IACC. 
	 
	He added that the most common form of cyber threats includes malware and Internet attacks among others. “Last year brought a marked increase in the frequency of cyber attacks on Indian assets, with government and private infrastructure equally affected”, noted Laha. 
	 However, it should be noted that currently India has four agencies to deal with cyber threats and provide security in the Internet space. CERT-In, a national nodal agency for responding to computer security systems was set up in 2004. It is primarily responsible for collection, analysis and alert of <keyword id="137092" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyber-security">cyber security</keyword> among other. Another such agency is NCIIPC whose primary function is to protect critical information infrastructure against cyber terrorism, warfare and other threats. 
	 
	“National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) is a technical intelligence agency which falls under National Security Adviser in the Prime Minister’s Office while National Cyber Coordination Centre is supposed to scan through the entire cyber traffic and alert government organization against plausible cyber threats and attacks,” stated Laha. 
	 
	Interestingly, India and the US have collaborated to cyber terrorism and had set up India US Cyber Security Forum in 2001. In 2010, a new India-US Counter Terrorism Cooperation Initiative was signed between the two countries to provide cyber security and critical infrastructural protection.

India Unprepared For Cyber Warfare

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The counterfeit market is more sophisticated than ever before. </li><li>New technology and the rise of online shopping has made it easier for scammers to sell fakes.</li></ul>Fake goods are everywhere: on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shein-is-copying-amazons-marketplace-and-facing-the-same-problems-2023-7">well-known e-commerce sites</a>, social media platforms, and even on websites that have been set up to mimic real brands. "The problem is just so overrun," Joe Simone, an IP protection specialist based in Hong Kong, told Insider, adding that counterfeiters attempt to sell fake versions of nearly everything today.The rise of online shopping, particularly during the pandemic, fueled the market for counterfeit products.It "really shook things up," DK Lee, founder and chief brand officer of AI-powered IP and brand protection platform MarqVision, told Insider. "Having everyone at home for those long lockdowns, especially in a time when the world's economy took such a hit, made an environment where counterfeiters could thrive," he added.At the same time, some brands shifted their focus — and dollars — away from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-partnering-with-us-customs-to-stop-counterfeit-sneakers-2021-5">policing copycat products</a> because they were squeezed by the economic impact of the pandemic.The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which is often cited by leading anti-counterfeiting organizations, has <a href="https://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/trade/trends-in-trade-in-counterfeit-and-pirated-goods_fc8b3ec5-en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> fake goods make up for 3.3% of world trade or $509 billion. Other <a href="https://www.uspto.gov/sites/default/files/documents/USPTO-Counterfeit.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">estimates</a> say sales of these good total between $1.7 trillion and $4.5 trillion per year.Counterfeit sellers are broadly targeting two types of shoppers: those who are knowingly buying a fake — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/superfake-handbags-clothing-almost-real-knockoffs-2023-7">a knockoff designer handbag</a>, for example — and those who believe they are buying the real deal and being deceived. Trade groups have fought for marketplaces like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-counterfeit-goods-inspection-ice-government-project">Amazon</a>, eBay, and Walmart to become more stringent on verifying sellers. There has been some progress here: a recently enacted bill, <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/blog/2023/06/online-marketplaces-take-note-inform-consumers-act-takes-effect-june-27th" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Inform Consumers Act</a>, requires online marketplaces to disclose and verify the identity of their sellers.Still, experts say that the burden is largely falling on brands to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nike-partnering-with-us-customs-to-stop-counterfeit-sneakers-2021-5">police fakes</a>. "One brand has to enforce on 250 global platforms ... people call it a game of whack-a-mole," Jen Hanks, director of sustainability at the American Apparel &amp; Footwear Association, told Insider. Consumers can also help tackle the issue by learning how to spot fakes. Here are six tips from experts on what to watch out for when you're shopping online: <h2>1. If the price looks too good to be true, it probably is </h2>One of the first things to check is the price of the product you're purchasing, experts said."If you find something online at a 70% discount, and it's not secondhand, that's the first red flag you usually see," Lee said.It's best to cross-check prices on authorized selling sites — that way you can see if the deal you're getting is realistic.<h2>2. Identify the seller and the product's origin</h2>If you're shopping on a third-party marketplace, it's a good idea to look at who's selling the item and where it's coming from.Ben T. Smith IV, who leads the communications, media, and technology practice at management consultancy firm Kearney, said a good way to ensure you're buying a legitimate product from Amazon, the largest online marketplace in the US, is by shopping on the "storefronts" for various brands. These sections of the site are used to highlight a specific brand that has a registered trademark and has been vetted by Amazon. Sometimes the account name of the seller can provide some clues, as well."If you're buying from XYZ_321 on eBay instead of a verified business account, you're pretty much shopping on blind faith," Lee said. <h2 style="font-weight: 400;">3. Dig deeper into the seller's background</h2>Experts say you should Google the seller's name to see if they have an official website or any contact details.A lack of online presence can be a red flag. It can also make it harder to return an item.If there are no contact details on the listing, try Googling the words "scam," "fake," or "complaint" along with the business name to see if other customers have left reviews, Simone said. If there's a number to call, try it, Bob Barchiesi, president of the International Anticounterfeiting Coalition (IACC), told Insider. If the number doesn't work, then you can be pretty sure it's a fake, he said. Insider's Hillary Hoffower previously <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-find-fake-products-online-shopping-amazon-ebay-walmart-2018-3">reported</a> that a "just launched" badge on a seller's profile is also something to look for as scammers can often open multiple accounts and run these for a short period of time before being closed down. <h2>4. Look out for fake reviews </h2>Reviews can also help spot fakes. It's easy to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fake-amazon-reviews-for-sale-buy-merchants-amazons-choice-2021-2">buy thousands of fake five-star ratings</a>, but it's a lot harder to fake a lot of written reviews, Lee said. Look out for spelling errors, poor grammar, and similar wording across various reviews, Smith said. If a stream of positive reviews crop up within a few days of each other, it's possible these aren't genuine and a scammer is pushing to quickly boost their profile.<h2>5. Review the quality of product images </h2>Fake images can be harder to spot because it's easy for sellers to use a brand's official photos for the listing. AI is also making it possible to create realistic but fake <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/viral-image-pope-francis-generated-by-ai-fooled-social-media-2023-3">custom images</a>. Still, if you do have suspicions, it's a good idea to email the seller and ask for more photos of the product. If they won't provide photos and don't explain why, that could be another red flag.<h2>6. Inspect the product packaging </h2>Once the product arrives, check the packaging closely. "Does the packaging look banged-up, old or sloppy? If you see any of these warning signs, the product very well could be fake," the IACC <a href="https://www.iacc.org/resources/about/how-to-spot-a-fake/a-final-word" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warns</a> online. Look out for misspellings on labels and check that the country it's been shipped from matches where these items are usually produced.<h2>7. Shop on sites that have friendly return policies </h2>Experts said if you really want to avoid buying a fake, then buy from a brand's own site or an authorized seller — somewhere like Best Buy, Macy's, or Footlocker, for example. And always check the return policies of shopping sites. Friendly return policies will make it easier to return a fake if you suspect you bought one, Simone said.

In April, Michael Kors had done the same, according to the<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gucci-quits-us-anti-counterfeiting-group-after-alibaba-joins-2016-5-2" target="_blank"> </a><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gucci-quits-us-anti-counterfeiting-group-after-alibaba-joins-2016-5-2" target="_blank">Associated Press,</a> calling Alibaba, "our most dangerous and damaging adversary." And then on Friday, the retailers got an inadvertent victory: Alibaba was suspended from the IACC because the organization's president, Robert Barchiesi, has stock in and close ties to the Chinese company, the <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/head-anti-fakes-group-closely-tied-alibaba-owns-39084420" target="_blank">AP reported</a>. The company blamed "a weakness in our corporate governance procedures."Up until this point, the company's seat at the table was largely questioned. It did, however, give the appearance that the e-commerce giant is attempting to ameliorate a major criticism: that it's a haven for counterfeit products, especially bags.Alibaba knows that counterfeit accessories are a problem in its business. The retailer has spent more than $61 million trying to eliminate counterfeit goods, which <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/alibaba-is-dominating-but-the-retailer-still-has-a-161-million-problem-2015-11" target="_blank">Ma has compared to a 'cancer.'</a>An Alibaba spokesperson told Business Insider:"Alibaba is proud to have received a unanimous vote from the IACC Board of Directors as the first e-commerce company to join the IACC. Alibaba has two networks: Tmall, a business-to-consumer network, and Taobao, the company's primary platform, wherein consumers sell to consumers. The latter is where the brunt of the counterfeit - and Alibaba's poor reputation - resides. These counterfeits happen in the first place because when Alibaba grew, it was simply trying to be big, Buchwald said. Since then, Alibaba has inevitably achieved breadth - but at what cost? This Chinese e-commerce giant is luxury retail's worst nightmare

Apart from purchasing Apache and Chinook helicopters from the US, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Air+Force+%28IAF%29+">Indian Air Force (IAF)</a> is also going to extend its fully-automated air surveillance and defence network in the entire country. 
 The <keyword id="80629" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cabinet-Committee-on-Security">Cabinet Committee on Security</keyword>, apart from the $3 billion purchase of choppers from the US, has also cleared an almost Rs 8,000 crore project for extension of the IAF's defence network. 
 
The aim is to ensure any intrusion by a hostile aircraft, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=helicopter%2C+drone+">helicopter, drone</a> or micro-light to be detected and tackled as soon as it takes place. 
 
According to a source, the composite air picture would be available in real-time at centralised locations and the national command post. 
 
The country will have better surveillance system with the help of integrating all airborne and ground-based civilian and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=military+radars">military radars</a>. 
 
The IAF has already set-up five nodes of the integrated air command and control system (IACCS) in the western sector facing <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pakistan+">Pakistan</a> at Barnala (Punjab), Wadsar (Gujarat), Aya Nagar (Delhi), Jodhpur (Rajasthan) and Ambala (Haryana) with help from defence <keyword id="437887" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="PSU-Bharat-Electronics">PSU Bharat Electronics</keyword>. 
 
There is now a plan to establish four new major nodes and 10 sub-nodes under Phase-II of the IACCS. While three nodes will be in eastern, central and southern India, the fourth is meant for the strategically-located Andaman and Nicobar Islands archipelago. 
 
Some of the new nodes will be located in underground complexes to improve survivability in face of enemy attacks, even as the entire IACCS infrastructure is also being upgraded with advanced early-warning, jam-resistant radars and the like.

India is emerging as the most sought after developing market and an important partner for the US. According to a survey conducted by PwC and Indo American Chamber of Commerce (IACC), the bilateral trade between the two countries is likely to touch $500 billion by 2025. 
 
Even ahead of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=modi+us+visit">Prime Minister Narendra Modi's</a> visit to <keyword id="6357722" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="silicon-valley">Silicon Valley</keyword>, the <keyword id="181958" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-India-Business-Council">US-India Business Council</keyword> (<keyword id="160091" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="USIBC">USIBC</keyword>) had expressed support for his key initiatives such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=digital+india">Digital India</a>, Start up India, Stand up India, and Skill India. 
 
The trade between the two countries has the potential to grow up to $500 billion through concerned efforts from all stakeholders - government leaders and investors, corporates, businesses and entrepreneurs. 
 
Shashank Tripathi, Strategy Consulting leader at PwC India, said, "India continues to emerge as one of the most important markets in the developing world and an important trading partner for the US. This is evident by the four-fold growth in the India-US trade since 2006 to $100 billion in 2014." 
 
Tripathi further added that the drivers to achieve this trade growth would be the five key sectors: 
· Aerospace and defence (A&amp;D) 
· Infrastructure and logistics 
· Energy 
· Manufacturing 
· Services 
 
"These sectors are of the utmost importance to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indo+us+relationship">Indo-US relationship</a>," said Tripathi said. 
 
As per the report, there is a large space to release the real potential of the trade in order to strengthen strategic relationship between the two countries. 
 
According to Tripathi, "This is increasingly important, since in the new world order, economic interests drive strategic partnerships to the mutual benefit of the world's largest and oldest democracies. The two nations should initiate more trade missions and remove barriers that affect the trade and investment among other initiatives from the government and corporates." 
 IACC secretary general Ranjana Khanna said, "Both the governments need to improve the business environment, provide tax incentives and simplify regulations. Positive signs are already emerging with the government's focus on the Make in India initiative, bilateral shared forum on manufacturing, and the <keyword id="338363" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-US-CEO">India-US CEO</keyword> Forum." 
 
She further said strategic trading relationship is only the first step in creating a more meaningful partnership between two of the largest democracies in the world. 
 
This relationship may lead the two nations to work together in areas such as space exploration, climate change and counter-terrorism. Apart from these, both the US and India can also build a stronger people partnership and can together solve some of the grave issued that the world is facing today. 
 
While roadblocks may arise in the course of time, the commonalities of interests are immense for growth in trade between India and the US, she said.

India-US bilateral trade likely to reach $500-billion mark by 2025

The Indo-American Chamber of Commerce is organizing its 10th Indo-US Economic Summit to explore investment opportunities as well as cooperation between various Indian industries and their counterpart in the US. In an exclusive interview with BI India, <keyword id="2558594" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dr-Lalit-Bhasin">Dr. Lalit Bhasin</keyword>, regional president of the chamber and an eminent legal personage shares his views on the Indo-US trade, India’s stand on WTO’s TFA and the key challenges faced by the US companies in India. Here are the excerpts: 
	 
	Both India and the US are upbeat about doing business with each other. As a chamber, how have you contributed to the strengthening of ties between the two countries? 
	 
	The Indo American Chamber of Commerce is the only bilateral chamber in the country. It is the association, which has both Indian and the US companies as its members. This chamber has been promoting business and economic relations essentially for the last four to five decades. 
	 
	Every year, we have a summit which is the flagship event of the chamber that facilitates trade between the two countries. And at this junction when India can expect investments, most of which is likely to come from the US, the chamber is playing a proactive role and channelizes this investment into various sectors in India. I will give you an example. 
	 
	The Indian legal fraternity has been constantly communicating with the US legal community and now we have developed an excellent rapport with them. This has helped the IACC to have a very active legal department within the chamber, which extends legal support to the business initiatives from both the countries. So you know we try to bring together the sectors of both the countries, be it services or manufacturing to facilitate better trade and economic ties between the two countries. 
	 
	Apart from this, the chamber has been sending a delegation regularly to explore opportunities in the US as well as welcome their delegation that comes to India for the same purposes. Besides, the chamber can boast of having top leaders of both India Inc and America Inc as its members, which also helps in active engagement. 
	 
	Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> had a very successful maiden visit to the US. As the apex body for Indo-American trade, do you feel that the high-profile meeting addressed all the important issues that actually affect Indo- American ties? 
	 
	Yes. I think most of the issues were raised by our Prime Minister in the meetings. The chamber too had raised concerns over matters such as high cost of visa and the disparity in social benefits given to Indian residents in the US. We had several meetings with the US embassy here and have been given a positive response. Besides, key issues like cooperation in defence and infrastructure sectors as well as providing a level-playing field to the Indian companies in the US was also taken up during the visit. 
	 
	We know that India has taken a firm stand regarding Trade Facilitation Agreement at the World Trade Organisation and it’s a bone of contention between the two countries. Reports have suggested that such a strong view on TFA may adversely impact India’s trade ties with the US. As a chamber, what are your views on it? 
	 
	We have to realise that we cannot do business with another country at the cost of our basic economic philosophies. If the US has got strong views on certain issues, then India too is entitled to hold onto its views on issues that are important for her. There may not be a common mid-point as far as TFA is concerned, but our disagreement should not hamper or affect our economic cooperation in other fields. 
	 
	There is a saying that near is my shirt, but nearer is my skin. So, I have to first look after my skin. Similarly, food security is our basic right and we cannot sacrifice our national interest simply because it is not in the interest of a group of countries. Our chamber certainly backs our government as far as our national interest needs to be protected while at the same time, the US is entitled to have its own views. 
	 
	But I would say that our relationship with the US is not so fragile that one disagreement can hamper the trade ties that we share with them. 
	 
	The US has raised a red flag as far as our Intellectual Property Right (<keyword id="51935" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPR">IPR</keyword>) laws are concerned especially in the pharma sector. As a legal expert as well as the regional head of the chamber, what’s your take on it? 
	 
	India’s IPR laws definitely need to be updated. While our domestic industries especially the domestic pharmaceutical sector has to be protected, we need to understand that it cannot be at the cost of going against the general trend in the IPR laws across the world. But then there are Supreme Court pronouncements that we have a responsibility towards our general public as far as medicines are concerned. 
	 
	However, the general sentiment across the globe is that India’s IPR laws needs to be recast and bring into conformity with the IPR laws practiced in other parts of the world. We have taken certain steps in the areas of copyrights and patents and amendments have been made. But I would still say that our IPR laws require a fresh look. 
	 
	In general, what are the concerns raised by the US companies regarding India? 
	 
	The concerns raised by foreign companies are very basic. Firstly, India is not perceived as a tax-friendly country and high profile cases such as Vodafone, Nokia have left a bad taste for the potential investors. So one major concern that the US companies have is the taxation policies of the country. Also, with due respect to our judiciary system, the Coalgate scam has also marred India’s image as an investment destination overseas. Huge investments were made in the coal sector but now there is a sense of uncertainty amongst investors. 
	 
	Besides, India is infamously known for red-tapism. Foreign players including those from the US feel that there is too much bureaucracy in the processes. And even though we claim a single window clearance for certain sectors but it actually isn’t so. 
	 
	Apart from these issues, foreign investors have also raised concerns regarding the long list of compliances which is required at both Centre and state level. There are too many regulators and overlapping jurisdiction of the Centre and the states. People don’t know the situation even after before investing. Also, the corporate feel that there are too many obsolete laws which deter them from doing business in the country. 
	 
	So, we as a chamber facilitate direct communication between the government and the corporate through this summit. We have government representatives who will directly engage with the US companies to understand the challenges faced by them in India and accordingly address it. 
	 
	What kind of response do you expect from the 10th Indo-US Economic Summit in terms of investments vis-à-vis the previous edition of the summit? 
	 
	We are not looking at the summit in terms of the investment we manage to get, but to help companies understand the laws and policies of both the countries better. At the 10th edition of the summit, we will be primarily pitching newer sectors along with the traditional ones for investments in India. The focus areas would be services, cyber security, media and entertainment, eCommerce, hospitality, tourism, skill development and education among others. This will lead the growth in business partnerships between Indian and American firms over the next decade. 
	 
	The summit will also give an opportunity to various states in India to showcase their potential and highlight their industry policies. It will create a highly enabling environment for establishing B2B contacts with visiting trade delegation and representatives from the US and companies and their appropriate counterparts ranging from large corporate to SMEs engaged in various sectors. 
	 
	This is the only summit that is officially being supported by the United States Commercial Service, which is the trade promotion arm of the US Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration. 
	 
	Besides, the summit has come in after the successful visit of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US. So, we expect a lot of substantial outcomes from the summit.
