Global smartphone shipments grow 6.5% in Q2 2024, Xiaomi records highest growth

The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Saturday even though the water levels have started receding in many parts of the state, officials said. The India Meteorological Department's Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in <keyword id="19941239" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Guwahati" source="keywords">Guwahati</keyword> has said that moderate rainfall is very likely to occur at most places of Assam with isolated heavy to very heavy rain likely over Kokrajhar district. "Low to moderate flash flood risk is likely over few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Arunachal Pradesh and southern parts of Assam and Meghalaya," it added. Meanwhile, a report by the Assam State <keyword id="20020610" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="disaster-management" source="keywords">Disaster Management</keyword> Authority (<keyword id="21816603" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ASDMA" source="keywords">ASDMA</keyword>) on Friday night said that seven more people lost their lives and over 12.33 lakh people are reeling under the deluge across 23 districts. The total number of people losing their lives in this year's flood, landslide, storm and lightning has increased to 106. Dhubri is the worst hit with over 3.18 lakh people affected, followed by Cachar with almost 1.5 lakh people and Golaghat with more than 95,000 people reeling under <keyword id="22312557" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="flood-waters" source="keywords">flood waters</keyword>, it added. "Flood water is receding in many parts of the state. As the rain has stopped in most areas, the condition is likely to improve further," a senior official of ASDMA said. The administration has been operating 316 relief camps and relief distribution centres in 18 districts, taking care of 2,95,651 displaced people at present. The state government has distributed 3,621.01 quintals of rice, 666.3 quintals of dal, 6,266.61 quintals of salt and 11,446.82 litres of mustard oil among the flood victims of the state during the last 24 hours. At present, 2,406 villages are under water and 32,924.32 hectares of crop areas have been damaged across Assam, the ASDMA said. Embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have been damaged by flood waters in many districts across the state. At present, the mighty Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger mark at Nimatighat, Tezpur and Dhubri. Its tributaries Burhidihing at Chenimari and Disang at Nanglamuraghat are flowing above the danger level. The Barak river's tributary Kushiyara is also flowing above the danger mark at Karimganj town, ASDMA said. On account of widespread flooding, over 6,67,175 domestic animals and poultry are affected across the state. Putin praises Modi for his tough policies; says he is 'main guarantor' of steady Russia-India relationship

<keyword id="18635" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="amazon" source="Orion">Amazon</keyword> has sued an enterprising group called <keyword id="19764317" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rekk" source="Orion">REKK</keyword>, which is responsible for stealing millions of dollars of products from Amazon's online stores through systematic refund abuse. Through the lawsuit, Amazon said it aims to expose their conspiracy and hold them accountable for their fraudulent activity. Protecting customers and earning the trust of selling partners are core values at Amazon. Retail theft is a persistent problem that plagues online and physical retailers alike. "One form of retail theft involves systematic refund fraud, which undermines Amazon's ability to efficiently serve customers and selling partners. Customers who shop in Amazon's online stores should be delighted with their purchases, and if they are not, they should be able to easily return the product," the lawsuit read. Among other places, REKK operates a <keyword id="1275203" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="telegram" source="Orion">Telegram</keyword> channel that has over 30,000 followers, where they brazenly advertise refund services that they fully admit are fraudulent. "In this scheme, bad actors who want a free product (like an <keyword id="101239" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ipad" source="Orion">iPad</keyword>) pay REKK a fee (such as 30 per cent of the product's cost) to obtain a fraudulent refund," according to the lawsuit. REKK uses sophisticated methods to obtain the refund, including socially engineering Amazon customer service, phishing Amazon employees, manipulating Amazon's systems through unauthorised access, and bribing Amazon insiders to grant refunds. The scheme tricks Amazon into processing refunds for products that are never returned, instead of returning the products as promised. "Defendants keep the product and the refund. REKK boasts that the organisation has fraudulently refunded over 100,000 orders from retailers (not just Amazon)," said Amazon. Amazon sues scammers for stealing millions of dollars via fake returns

Google-owned <keyword id="10879" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="youtube" source="Orion">YouTube</keyword> has announced a new comment moderation setting, "Pause", allowing creators and moderators to prevent viewers from creating new comments while keeping existing comments on videos. "We're rolling out a new, optional comment moderation setting called Pause that allows you, as creators, to prevent the creation of new comments at the video level while preserving comments that were already published," YouTube said in a blogpost on Thursday. Users can find the Pause option in the video-level comment settings in the upper right-hand corner of the comments panel on either the watch page in the app or in YouTube Studio. When Pause is enabled, viewers can notice under the video that you've paused all comments as well as previously published comments. YouTube has been experimenting with the Pause feature since October. The company mentioned that creators and moderators in the experiment group have said they used the Pause feature to gain more flexibility over how they manage their comments. Before the Pause feature, creators had only two options to prevent new comments from being posted on their content -- to hold comments for review before publishing them or to disable comments from your channels entirely. Meanwhile, in an effort to lure users to subscribe to its paid Premium service, YouTube has rolled out a collection of mini-games -- called "Playables", offering more than 30 mini-games that can be played instantly, without the need for any downloads. The games can be played on Android, iOS and desktop. YouTube's new 'Pause' feature lets you prevent new comments on videos

The <keyword id="76115" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="european-parliament" source="Orion">European Parliament</keyword> on Saturday said its members have reached a landmark "provisional agreement" on the proposed Artificial Intelligence Act (<keyword id="16351032" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ai-act" source="Orion">AI Act</keyword>). The EU's AI Act is set to be the world's first comprehensive set of rules to govern AI and user harm associated with it. "This regulation aims to ensure that fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law and environmental sustainability are protected from high risk AI, while boosting innovation and making Europe a leader in the field," the European Parliament said in a statement. Recognising the potential threat to citizens' rights and democracy posed by certain applications of AI, the co-legislators agreed to prohibit biometric categorisation systems that use sensitive characteristics (political, religious, philosophical beliefs, sexual orientation, race). The agreement also prohibits untargeted scraping of facial images from the internet or CCTV footage to create facial recognition databases, emotion recognition in the workplace and educational institutions and social scoring based on social behaviour or personal characteristics. It also curbs AI systems that manipulate human behaviour to circumvent their free will and AI used to exploit the vulnerabilities of people (due to their age, disability, social or economic situation). For AI systems classified as high-risk (due to their significant potential harm to health, safety, fundamental rights, environment, democracy and the rule of law), clear obligations were agreed. Members successfully managed to include a mandatory fundamental rights impact assessment, among other requirements, applicable also to the insurance and banking sectors. "AI systems used to influence the outcome of elections and voter behaviour, are also classified as high-risk. Citizens will have a right to launch complaints about AI systems and receive explanations about decisions based on high-risk AI systems that impact their rights," said the Parliament. EU reaches provisional agreement on landmark AI Act, a global first

"World recognizes that there's no option but to come to India for a large demand": Piyush Goyal

Brushing aside an impassioned plea by Secretary-General <keyword id="300649" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="antonio-guterres" source="Orion">Antonio Guterres</keyword>, a diplomatically isolated United States has again vetoed a Security Council resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Hamas-Israel conflict. The resolution received 13 votes in the 15-member Council with Britain abstaining on Friday but was cut down by Washington's veto. The veto came exactly two months after <keyword id="6355882" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="israel" source="Orion">Israel</keyword> launched retaliatory attacks on Gaza for the terrorist onslaught a day earlier by <keyword id="39745" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hamas" source="Orion">Hamas</keyword>, which rules the territory. This was the second resolution on Gaza that the US vetoed; another was vetoed by Russia and China, and two failed to get the minimum of nine votes required to pass as the Council grappled with the crisis. But last month, the Council adopted a resolution calling for a humanitarian pause in the fighting - a more limited cessation of hostilities with a specific aim - when the US, Russia and Britain abstained saving it from a veto after the failure of the four earlier attempts at an action on Gaza. That led to a four-day pause -- extended by two days -- in fighting starting last month to allow relief supplies into Gaza and for the release of some of the about 240 hostages taken from Israel by Hamas and other terrorist groups. Friday's resolution backed by about 90 countries was proposed by the United Arab Emirates, whose Deputy Permanent Representative Mohamed Issa Abushahab asked, "What is the message we are sending civilacross the world who may find themselves in similar situations" by being unable to pass the resolution. Explaining the veto, US Deputy Permanent Representative <keyword id="242428" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="robert-wood" source="Orion">Robert Wood</keyword> said that it was calling for an "unsustainable ceasefire that will only plant the seeds for the next war". Moreover, he said, it did not condemn the 7/10 Hamas attack on Israel or affirm Israel's right to self-defence. The attempt to pass a resolution for a Gaza ceasefire came after Guterres on Wednesday invoked a rarely used provision of the UN Charter to call the Council's attention to the crisis in that territory from Israel's retaliatory attacks. He asked the Council to act to "avert a human catastrophe" warning, "There is a high risk of the total collapse of the humanitarian support system in Gaza, which would have devastating consequences". He used Article 99 of the Charter that had been invoked only three times before to make the call to action by the Council, about the only power given to the Secretary-General to act in a crisis. He warned the Council on Friday "I fear the consequences (of the conflict) could be devastating for the security of the entire region" and spread elsewhere constituting a threat to international peace, Making his plea for a ceasefire, Guterres told the Council, "The people of Gaza are looking into the abyss". They "are being told to move like human pinballs - ricocheting between ever-smaller slivers of the south, without any of the basics for survival", he said. "But nowhere in Gaza is safe:. He said that he "unreservedly" condemned the Hamas attacks that killed about 1,200 people including 33 children and resulted in hundreds taken hostage, and that he was "appalled by the reports of sexual violence". He also had strong words for Israel noting: "At the same time, the brutality perpetrated by Hamas can never justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people". He noted that 17,000 Palestinians, including more than 4,000 women and 7,000 children, have been "reportedly" killed in Israeli operations. "While indiscriminate rocket fire by Hamas into Israel, and the use of civilians as human shields, are in contravention of the laws of war, such conduct does not absolve Israel of its own violations", he said. In a remark apparently aimed at the US, which he did not name, he said, "International humanitarian law cannot be applied selectively. It is binding on all parties equally at all times, and the obligation to observe it does not depend on reciprocity". Israel's Permanent Representative Gilad Erdan criticised Guterres for invoking Article 99 saying that he did not use it while the world was reeling from Russia's invasion of Ukraine or for other crises. He said that regional stability can "only be achieved once Hamas is eliminated". Palestine's Permanent Observer Riyad Mansour accused Israel of "conducting the war, through atrocities" and added that denying a ceasefire will not end them. The General Assembly in October passed by an overwhelming majority a resolution calling for a ceasefire. It received the votes of 121 members, while 14 voted against it and 45 including India abstained, showing broad support for a ceasefire. India said it was abstaining because the resolution did not condemn Hamas terrorism. The veto came as President Joe Biden is facing growing calls for a ceasefire from many, even those in his party, and large demonstrations while his unwavering support for Israel is backed by a broad political spectrum from his party and the Republican side. To meet the criticism of his backing for Israel while its actions in Gaza his civilians, the Biden administration has been counselling Israel to take more precautions to protect civilians. An increasing number of jobseekers prefer to choose companies providing permanent <keyword id="123591" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="work-from-home" source="Orion">work from home</keyword> option, according to a report. The onset of the Covid-19 <keyword id="43587" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pandemic" source="Orion">pandemic</keyword> made working from home the new normal for many job roles. According to <keyword id="218117" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="naukri-com" source="Orion">Naukri.com</keyword>, the job platform has seen 93,000 permanent and temporary remote jobs being listed since July last year. Of these, 22 per cent jobs were for permanent remote roles only. In the last six months, Naukri.com has seen 32 lakh job searches for permanent and temporary remote jobs, by Indian job seekers. Of these, about 57 per cent of searches were made for permanent remote jobs during the same time, with the highest search that is, over 3.5 lakh being reported only in the month of December 2021. "There is a foundational change in how recruiters are setting up organisational structures," said Pawan Goyal, Chief Business Officer, Naukri.com, in a statement. "While uncertainty prevails due to the pandemic, more and more recruiters are acknowledging the benefits of work from anywhere like access to talent and more inclusion and are now beginning to make permanent changes to the human resource and infrastructure requirements at a corporate level," he added. In general, both large and small companies have posted all three types of jobs i.e. regular jobs, temporary work-from-home and totally remote jobs. Data reflects that IT Software, Software Services, ITeS and Recruitment/Staffing sectors are posting more permanently remote jobs. Some of the companies posting both temporary and permanent remote jobs are Amazon, Tech Mahindra, HCL, PWC, Trigent, Flipkart, Siemens, Deloitte, Oracle, Zensar, TCS, Capgemini etc, the report said.
