<br /> True to its dictatorial essence, North Korea today witnessed the execution of another senior official for allegedly disrespecting its top leader <keyword id="182233" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kim-Jong-Un">Kim Jong Un</keyword>. According to the South Korean intelligence, the victim was none other than the state’s minister of the People’s Armed Forces, General <keyword id="1681917" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyon-Yong-Chol">Hyon Yong Chol</keyword>.<br />

According to a report, the South Korean intelligence suggested that It is believed that Gen. Chol was purged and executed with an anti-aircraft gun in the capital city Pyongyang on April 30 this year. Chol was killed after being declared a ‘traitor’ after he was found dozing off during military event. He also allegedly tried second-guessing Kim’s orders.<br />

Following the incident, Kim quickly labeled Hyon as disloyal and execution orders were issued. This is one of the many executions that have taken place in the isolated country after Kim took charge after his father, Kim Jong Il’s demise in 2011. The dictatorial leader has also executed 15 senior government officials which included two vice ministers last month.<br />

According to reports, Kim has ordered a total of 68 senior officials between 2012 and 2014 in a bid thwart any attempt to challenge his authority.<br />
<br /> It should be noted that the dictator has also executed his uncle, <keyword id="1356040" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jang-Song-Thaek">Jang Song Thaek</keyword>, who was once considered to be the second most powerful man in North Korea for allegedly stealing state funds and planning to disrupt Kim’s rule in 2013.<br />

The Singapore summit abruptly ended without a deal due to disagreements on the easing of sanctions on North Korea and the dismantling of the country's nuclear facilities. Trump has since downplayed the stalemate and said he still had high hopes for the regime.</p><p>"My people think it could have been a violation," Trump said on Monday in response to North Korea's missile tests earlier in May. Presumably the spectacle of a human body being destroyed by high-caliber machine gun fire is one the crowd will not forget anytime soon."</p><p>And it wouldn't be the first time North Korea executed someone by firing squad. There are also reports that Kim executed two of his uncle's top aides in 2013 using this method.</p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Adding to the plausibility of the execution story is the evidence that suggests North Korea has executed people with anti-aircraft guns before. <p><span class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><span data-post-image="" class="image on-image"></span><p></p></span>It's hard to know how much of the crazy news that comes out of North Korea is true, and reports of brutal executions have been proven false in the past.</p>
<p>But the latest report about a top-ranking general <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/report-north-korea-executes-defense-chief-on-treason-charges-2015-5">being executed with an anti-aircraft gun</a> for falling asleep during a meeting may just be accurate.</p>
<p>First, the latest rumors about the top-ranking military official,&#xa0;Gen. Hyon Yong-chol, come from South Korean intelligence officials to the country's lawmakers.</p>
<p>The New York Times&#xa0;<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/13/world/asia/north-korea-said-to-execute-a-top-official.html?smid=tw-share">reports</a>&#xa0;that information from South Korean intelligence is generally considered to be reliable. (The Times adds the caveat that South Korea's spy agency "has in the past been accused of leaking shocking news about their isolated and secretive neighbor to unsettle its government or divert attention from domestic scandals.")</p>
<p>The spy agency said Hyon was executed in front of hundreds of people for being a "traitor."</p>
<p>Adding credence to the South Korean spies in this case: The Washington Post <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2015/05/01/does-north-korea-execute-people-with-anti-aircraft-guns-new-satellite-images-suggest-the-rumors-may-be-true/?postshare=761431522478057">reported earlier this month</a> that new satellite imagery&#xa0;appears to show people standing in front of anti-aircraft machine guns, waiting to be executed.</p>
<p>The images are from October, taken at a military training area near Pyongyang, but North Korea has long been rumored to execute people in this manner. Experts have questioned this supposed method of execution, but the satellites images from <a href="http://www.hrnk.org/uploads/pdfs/HRNKInsider_Greg_Joe_4_29_15.pdf">U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea</a>&#xa0;lend more credence to the reports.</p>
<p>The human rights report notes that vehicles present at the small-arms firing range where the supposed execution took place in October suggest that senior North Korean officers were present at the facility, which would be unlikely if it were just a training exercise. And the&#xa0;ZPU-4 anti-aircraft guns lined up at the facility wouldn't typically be seen in exercises at a small-arms range.</p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The most plausible explanation of the scene captured in the October 7th satellite image is a gruesome public execution. Anyone who has witnessed the damage one single U.S. .50 caliber round does to the human body will shudder just trying to imagine a battery of 24 heavy machine guns being fired at human beings. Bodies would be nearly pulverized. The gut-wrenching viciousness of such an act would make "cruel and unusual punishment" sound like a gross understatement.</p>

<p>The Times notes that recently, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un "is believed to have been terrorizing North Korea's elites with executions and purges as he has struggled to establish his authority" after his father, the previous and much-feared dictator Kim Jong Il, died in 2011.</p>
<p>South Korean officials have asserted that Kim Jong Un has executed dozens of senior North Korean officials in the past few years for questioning his decisions or failing to follow orders, according to the Times. One of the men rumored to be executed was Kim's uncle, who was reportedly accused of plotting a coup.</p>
<p>So while it's hard to know what's really going on in the Hermit kingdom, the latest savage execution is probably true.</p>

<p><table class="image-container float_right" width="200"><tr><td><div class="image"></div><p class="source"><a href="http://www.cnn.com/2012/04/09/world/asia/north-korea-launch/index.html?hpt=hp_t1">Screenshot via CNN</a></p></td></tr></table>New satellite images reveal ongoing activity at <keyword id="13473" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="North-Korea">North Korea</keyword>'s atomic test site, according to a US research institute, as expectation mounts of an imminent nuclear detonation by the isolated state.</p>
<p>The images, as recent as January 23, suggest the facility would be ready to conduct a test "in a few weeks or less" once the order is given, the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University posted on its 38 North website on Sunday.</p>
<p>"Snowfall and subsequent clearing operations as well as tracks in the snow reveal ongoing activity at buildings and on roadways near the possible test tunnel," it said.</p>
<p>The institute's analysis followed a series of daily threats from North Korea that it is preparing its third nuclear test in response to UN sanctions imposed on Pyongyang for a long-range rocket launch in December.</p>
<p>In a meeting with top security officials, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un ordered "substantial and high-profile important state measures," fueling speculation of an imminent detonation.</p>
<p>Military chief Hyon Yong-Chol, the head of the army's politburo Choe Ryong-Hae and spy chief Kim Won-Hong attended the meeting, state television reported on Sunday.</p>
<p>Last week's UN resolution imposing sanctions threatened further "significant action" if Pyongyang conducted a nuclear test.</p>
<p>The North's two previous detonations in 2006 and 2009 followed a similar pattern of a <keyword id="43035" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Missile">missile</keyword> launch, followed by UN measures, followed by a nuclear test.</p>
<p>US warnings about the consequences of a third test have been backed by unusually strident criticism of Pyongyang by its sole major ally China.</p>
<p>Last week, a state-run newspaper close to China's ruling Communist Party, said in an editorial that Beijing would "not hesitate" to reduce aid to North Korea if it went ahead.</p>
<p>China has been the primary benefactor of Pyongyang since the 1950-1953 Korean War, providing critical diplomatic and economic support.</p>
