In 2018, the Kathua rape case, where an 8-year-old girl was brutally gang-raped and murdered, led to the government amending the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, introducing the death penalty for the rape of children below 12 years of age. The Unnao rape case in 2017, involving a sitting MLA from Uttar Pradesh, underscored the issue of political influence in crimes against women. The victim and her family faced harassment and threats, which highlighted the need for better protection for victims and witnesses in such cases. The MLA was eventually convicted in 2019, and the case led to increased calls for accountability and transparency in handling cases involving powerful individuals. Another case that shook the nation was the Hyderabad rape and murder case in 2019. The brutal killing of a young veterinary doctor led to widespread protests, and the subsequent killing of the accused in a police encounter sparked debates about the effectiveness of the legal system and the public's demand for swift justice. For instance, as of late 2023, only about 70% of the allocated Nirbhaya Fund has been utilised, with significant amounts directed towards large cities, leaving many areas and initiatives underfunded. Moreover, compensation schemes for victims often face delays, further highlighting the gaps in the system. "Government has failed women of Bengal," says Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose

We are asking the police to complete their investigation by Wednesday," he added. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, after paying a visit to the parents of the deceased on Monday, gave a deadline of August 18 to Kolkata Police to solve the case, failing which she said she would hand over the matter to the CBI. Junior doctors at the state-run Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi on Tuesday started a 'pen-down' agitation by boycotting <keyword id="19972104" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="OPD-services" source="keywords">OPD services</keyword> and elective surgeries in protest. "Around 200 doctors have joined the agitation and senior resident doctors have also supported our stir. The four accused have been arrested four days back and were in police custody. However, in the wee hours of the day, the police had taken them to the scene of the crime --- to the highway to recreate the crime. As per sources, one of the accused snatched a pistol and made a bid to escape—which is when the police shot them down at around 4 am today. A reporter told Republic TV channel that ideally accused are taken to recreate a crime in daylight. However, since there were protests and public attention around the case and the accused, they decided to take them during very early hours of the day. The police department of Hyderabad is expected to hold a press conference to explain the incident. The name of the victim has been withheld to protect the family's privacy. No other changes have been made to the wire copy. The charred body of a 27-year-old woman was found under a culvert near here on Thursday,a day after she went missing, police said. The burnt body of the victim working as an assistant veterinarian at a state-run hospital, was noticed by some passers-by who alerted police. Members of her family, who had filed a missing complaint after she did not return home by 10.20 pm on Wednesday, identified the body, police said. Police said she had gone to the hospital and returned home on Wednesday evening. She again left around 5.50 pm to go to another clinic and parked her two-wheeler near Shamshabad toll plaza and took a shared cab. Her younger sister in a complaint lodged with police said she got a call from her sister at 9.22 pm stating that she was still at the plaza as someone told her that her scooter had a flat tyre and offered to help her, taking the two-wheeler. The complainant said her sister told her that after sometime the person returned saying all shops were closed and he will try to get it repaired in some other place. She also informed her sister that she was scared as there was a lorry in the vicinity and some people who had offered her help were near the vehicle, the complainant said. The complainant said she called her again at 9.44 pm but the phone was switched off following which they approached police. The body was found near the culvert on the Hyderabad-Bengaluru national highway, which is around 25 km from the toll plaza where she was last seen, police said. Cyberabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar said ten teams have been formed to crack the case. He said police were verifying CCTV footage and suspect involvement of least two persons behind the woman's disappearance.

Ram Singh had committed suicide in jail. The CBI investigation The Central Bureau of Investigation gave a statement to the Delhi High Court that the charges of rape pressed by the 19-year-old girl against Senghar are correct. The investigating agency had said that they have sufficient evidence to prove Senghar guilty. Senghar is guilty of plotting the rape of the minor along with co-accused Shashi Singh, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/theres-truth-in-unnao-girls-charges-against-mla-says-cbi/articleshow/70579702.cms">reported</a> Times of India citing CBI. The main accused is the father, Subhash Batham, who is known to be mentally unstable and was even convicted for murder. Batam was sentenced to a life term for the murder of his uncle in 2005. He was granted bail after he spent 10 years in prison. He was imprisoned yet again over charges of theft. The kidnapping however turned the residents of Karsia village as they were kept hostage for over 11 hours. In fact, it was the villagers who helped break the door which led to Batham opening fire on the police. The villagers also beat up his wife Ruby who died an hour later at the community health centre. All the children however were safely rescued. The 11-hour hostage drama The kidnapping began around 3 pm on January 31 when Batham invited children to his daughter’s birthday party. At 7 pm, parents got anxious when Batham refused to open the door and warned that their children won’t be released. "The man called the children for a birthday party and held them hostage in the basement of the house. Sources said Batham’s house was weird as there were no windows. He kept the children in a basement where he stored ammunition like bombs. The police used drone cameras to monitor the rescue operation. The UP couple who kidnapped 23 children over a birthday party die — leaving their own daughter orphaned

New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to hold discussion with internet intermediaries, including Google, <keyword id="790242" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">WhatsApp</keyword> and Facebook, to develop a strategy to restrict circulation of rape videos, child pornography and images. A bench headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and Surya Kant noted the submissions of advocate Aparna Bhat, appearing for Hyderabad-based NGO Prajwala. Bhat submitted a meeting, to deal with circulation of obscene content on social media platforms, is yet to be convened by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) involving all the stakeholders since December 2018. Solicitor Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, submitted before the court the meeting on this matter would take place soon and asked the court not to pass any order. Bhat cited the difference in opinion between the NGO and internet intermediaries on the matter - NGO reckon the content can be blocked at the outset, but internet companies say materials have to be brought to their notice to take action. Bhat said delay in action would eventually make the content go viral. She insisted that the issue of child pornography falls under POCSO (the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act) and it's mandatory to report on it. Lawyer N.S. Nappinai, who is assisting the court as <keyword id="525739" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="amicus-curiae">amicus curiae</keyword>, suggested artificial intelligence tools could filter obscene content and help in its elimination. In 2015, the apex court had taken the suo motu cognizance of a letter written to the then Chief Justice H.L. Dattu alleging circulation of two rape videos and the video content was submitted in the court in a pen drive. The top court on Tuesday said it will ask MHA to schedule a meeting on this matter. The court asked Bhat to provide a status report to all parties to the case and scheduled the matter for further hearing after four weeks. In 2018, the apex court had said the Centre could lay down standard operating procedure (SoP) to block obscene content involving children.
