But the work starts there, as he'll have to navigate thorny issues such as youth unemployment, income inequality, and reliance on sanctioned Russian oil.<h2>Fueling growth and shaking hands</h2>India's economy has more than doubled in size during Modi's decade in charge to more than $3.7 trillion last year.The International Monetary Fund (IMF) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.imf.org/en/Blogs/Articles/2024/04/29/asias-growth-and-inflation-outlook-improves-but-risks-remain">recently upgraded</a> its growth forecast for real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to a robust 7.8% this year, 6.8% in 2025, and 6.5% in 2026.India has already overtaken Britain to become the world's fifth-largest economy. It's on track to leapfrog Japan and Germany into third spot behind the US and China by 2027.The country's flagship stock index has also tripled in value since Modi took office in May 2014, thanks to wealth gains and growing investment appetites.Moreover, <a target="_blank" href="https://sbi.co.in/documents/13958/36530824/270224-HCES_Feb24.pdf">one estimate</a> puts the percentage of the Indian population living on less than $2.15 a day at below 5%, down from 12% in 2011. He's likely to be seeking to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) in India — and to capitalize on bosses' <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-china-relations-reshoring-manufacturing-jobs-made-in-america-2023-10">desire to hedge their bets on China</a> given its strained relationship with the US, economic woes, and how disruptive its strict pandemic lockdowns were to global supply chains."India's population and economic growth numbers are causing a lot of global executives to revisit their India presence and consider scaling up," Richard Rossow, a senior advisor and chair in US-India Policy Studies at the Center for Strategic &amp; International Studies, told Business Insider."Paired with increased concerns about supply chain resilience and security concerns about China, it's a very good time for a hard push to win investments."The United Nations said that India and China both had a population of 1.426 billion in April last year, meaning India is probably now the most populous given its rising birth rate.<h2>Change for the better — mostly</h2>Modi has instigated a raft of major economic reforms since taking office, intended to make India more business-friendly, and boost government revenues by taxing more of the country's vast informal economy.He rolled out a tax on goods and services, simplified bankruptcy laws, lifted FDI restrictions, cut corporate income tax, and ended retrospective taxation.However, not all of Modi's moves spurred growth."Demonetisation was a key economic policy which had negative effects on the economy," Kunal Sen, a director of the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics, told BI.Sen is the author of several books about India's economy and a professor of development economics at the University of Manchester.He was referring to Modi's sudden declaration in November 2016 that all 500 and 1,000-rupee bills — 86% of Indian currency in circulation — would <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/india-ending-500-and-1000-rupee-bills-to-fight-corruption-2016-11">no longer be accepted as legal tender</a>.The government's goals were to capture undeclared income, get rid of counterfeit currency, broaden the tax base, and bring more activities into the formal economy."The other key economic policy was JAM — the trinity of bank accounts for the poor, mobile numbers and a biometric card. This last economic policy has been revolutionary," Sen said.He was hailing a broader digitization drive under Modi that has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/how-indias-digital-payments-ecosystem-has-evolved-in-the-last-one-year/slidelist/90595832.cms">transformed</a> how Indians bank, invest, pay their taxes, and conduct business.<h2>Prosperity for all</h2>Modi's efforts have helped to usher in a more prosperous era for some Indians, but many have been left behind.Young people are India's beating heart, with about half its population under 25 and almost two-thirds under 35. Matching those hundreds of millions of people with jobs has proven a challenge, with youth unemployment almost tripling from below 6% in 2000 to about 18% in 2019. During that period, the US and Europe slapped sanctions on Russian oil to defund Putin's military machine and punish Moscow for attacking a sovereign nation.Despite that, India purchased an estimated $37 billion of Moscow's oil in 2023 — 13 times the amount it bought annually prior to the conflict. Its buying helped Russia rake in a <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/russia-economy-oil-sales-india-ukraine-war-moscow-western-sanctions-2024-2">record $320 billion</a> of federal revenue last year.Indian demand for Russian oil has <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/russia-oil-trade-crude-india-discount-barrel-sanctions-price-cap-2024-2">cooled</a> in recent months as new sanctions have made it <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/russia-economy-oil-energy-exports-india-imports-revenue-sanctions-discount-2024-3">more expensive</a>, but the buying remains controversial.Officials in India have <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/crude-oil-prices-india-russia-trade-geopolitics-opec-supply-puri-2024-2">defended</a> the purchases, saying that if they'd bought Middle Eastern oil instead, global crude prices would have shot up.India is also one of the world's largest oil refiners and has helped Western nations to maintain access to refined petroleum products even as they're refraining from buying Russian crude directly.Yet the country imports 85% of its oil, so its overriding interest is securing the cheapest oil possible to support its development, said Neelima Jain, a senior fellow and chair in US India Policy Studies at CSIS."India will continue to buy Russian oil if the price remains favorable and allows for firm volume guarantees, as the country prioritizes energy affordability and accessibility during its rapid rural-to-urban transition, which has led to a 6% year-on-year growth in energy demand," she told BI."In an inflationary environment, economics [rather] than geopolitics will drive India's energy choices."<div type="image" title="Narendra Modi and Vladimir Putin" height="3196" width="4714" msid="109838234" hostid="261" sizebytes="426292"></div><h2>India the IT hub</h2>Under Modi, India has made big strides in modernizing its economy, combating bureaucracy, and appealing to foreign investors.Big Tech stalwarts like Microsoft have a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-has-so-many-patents-its-outsourced-the-job-to-india-2013-5">long history</a> of outsourcing to India, but recent efforts to cut red tape and slash corporate taxes appear to have fueled fresh interest.Sweeping layoffs at Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Salesforce and other US tech titans in the past few years could presage a large exodus of jobs to India.Sanjay Shetty of Randstad India <a target="_blank" href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/technology/outsourcing-hubs-like-india-to-bag-40-of-jobs-lost-to-layoffs/articleshow/101088673.cms?">told The Economic Times</a> last summer that he expected 30% to 40% of the tech jobs eliminated globally to move to India by 2025."India is going to be the biggest gainer in the medium to long term, as almost every company that we speak to is looking at expanding its India base," Shetty said.Even if that pans out, it won't be a panacea for a country facing not just unemployment and underemployment, but also stark income inequality, regional disparities, and the risk of alienating Western allies by continuing to buy Russian oil.Yet overall, India appears to be headed in the right direction."The growth is real, if focused on a few key states," Rossow said. "India's dynamic technology services sector is to IT services what China is to manufacturing. So there is much to cheer, even as the reform agenda seems to never end."

And although food supplies have been disrupted by the war in Ukraine and the Covid-19 pandemic, we cannot pin these world events on the continued problem of global hunger, he told the room."The ones that are feeding the world are themselves hungry," said Sunga, who joined fellow panelists from Nestlé, the Indian government, and chemicals company Yara International in a panel discussion.During the session, which sought to discuss how technology can drive food security, he called for equity and fairness in distribution, as well as improved infrastructure for the world's agricultural sector. "Technology plays an important role," Sunga said. "But context matters. Technology should be at the service of <keyword id="11897207" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="farmers" source="Orion">farmers</keyword>, and it should be able to help solve their problems."Many of those problems are simple and require simple solutions. But new forms of technology must come at a low cost to the individual farmer. And that often means the most simple forms of technology, could prove the most transformative.<h2>Back to basics </h2>"If you deploy simple technology, which could be providing cell phone technology, it is going to do things at scale, it's going to do things at speed, it is going to empower people to make decisions," said Sunga.Tore Holsether agreed, telling Davos attendees that this approach has proven to be effective.At the start of the pandemic, his company worked with farmers in East Africa to figure out how to rapidly increase food production. They used cell phones to provide economic advice and connect digitally with 2 million farmers. 250,000 of those farmers were also given fertilizer, and through the program, they were able to triple their maize yields in the first season.An integrated approach that combines technology, and practice-based reward systems — like Nestlé's Income Accelerator project, which gives incentives to farmers who adopt agricultural practices like pruning and using shade trees to build more resilient <keyword id="14049043" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="crops" source="Orion">crops</keyword> — may help to empower farmers and move toward ending global hunger.But above all else, Sunga argues that access to equitable value chains for all farmers has the biggest potential for impact. This means that better infrastructure for the world's poorer agricultural communities is critical, especially information and communication infrastructure."Issues around the areas you are farming on might influence your amount of input. Maybe you think your land is one hectare, but maybe it's half a hectare," said Sunga. When you input the data for that one hectare, you end up with waste. "Yet you can measure the size of the land with technology," he said, adding that "those basics are so fundamental to fix.""The moment the value chain becomes more equitable, fair, and distributes fair work, and fair pay for the ecosystem role that management farmers play, you will see a big change," he said.

He said that HungerBox is 3.5 times larger than their closet competitors, like Zomato Food at Work or GoKhaana. Going for lunch in the post-COVID world There are three main differences that employees are going to have to face as they trickle back into offices. We said that we will not have any more cash transactions,” said Mitra. How do you know that your food is “COVID safe”? HungerBox claims that they were listing out some of the main vulnerabilities in the system two days into the lockdown. But, won’t most of the people still be working from home? Work-from-home isn’t a new concept, it’s just a necessity of the lockdown. But a group of officers responded by forcefully shoving, removing, and re-shoving a 6-millimeter tube through his nose and down to his stomach, the article added. The video showed the process, which occurred in front of other detainees who chose to go on hunger strikes.He was later force-fed again on September 12 by way of a thinner tube, according to The Intercept."I was only thinking that I wish this tube would flip and go into my brain and the story ended there," Kumar told the outlet.Kumar claimed that he spent about three months in total in solitary confinement before his release."I got my freedom. Freedom is very good for everyone, and me also," Kumar said when he was released after almost a year in custody, according to Texas Monthly.The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. Indian economic slowdown is leaving its infants hungry as only 10% are given acceptable diet

<ul><li><keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> came in at 103 out of 119 countries on the <keyword id="447399" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-hunger-index">Global Hunger Index</keyword> 2018. </li><li>The increasing problem of undernourishment makes India fall in a list with 45 countries having ‘serious level of hunger’. </li><li>India is behind many neighbouring countries like China, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. </li></ul>The sustainable development agenda of removing poverty and hunger might seem like a dream to India despite being the world’s fastest developing economy. The recent<a href="http://www.globalhungerindex.org/results/"> Global Hunger Index 2018</a> (GHI) reveals that tackling hunger and undernutrition is a difficult task for the Modi Government. <a href="http://www.globalhungerindex.org/india.html">India stood 103rd</a> on the Global Hunger Index along with Nigeria and has been categorised as a country with ‘serious’ levels of hunger. The 13th edition of <a href="https://www.concern.net/sites/default/files/resource/2018/10/global_hunger_index_2018.pdf">Global Hunger Index 2018</a> released by <keyword id="5219554" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Welthungerhilfe">Welthungerhilfe</keyword> and Concern Worldwide stated that although there has been a significant decline in the proportion of the undernourished population from 18.2% in 2000 to 14.8% in 2018, India still has GHI of 31.1 making the country fall in the ‘serious’ category. The best-performing countries have a GHI score as low as 5 (Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia etc). The report uses four parameters to calculate the index - mainly proportion of undernourished in the population, prevalence of wasting in children under five years, the prevalence of stunting in children under five years and the mortality rate under five years of age. Out of the four parameters, three are dedicated to children below the age of five years. And in all this, India performed poorly with a GHI score of 30.5. Currently, the scores for three out of the four parameters have shown a declining trend. In contrast, a rising trend can be witnessed in the prevalence of wasting in children under five years. The proportion of undernourished in population was dropped to 14.8% from 18.2% in 2000 whereas the prevalence of wasting in children under five years was recorded at 21% (2.9% more since 2000). The prevalence of stunting in children under five years and under-five year mortality were 38.4% and 4.3% respectively. And when compared to the neighbours? Despite a 0.3 point improvement from 2017, many neighbouring countries like China (25th), Sri Lanka (67th), Myanmar (68th), Nepal (72nd) and Bangladesh (86th) stood ahead of India. Although, the country has done far better than Pakistan which stood at 106th position, coming in at 103 does not look good. While it can be supposed that India’s rank fell because the other countries fared better, the GHI report stated that it is not possible to derive at an accurate conclusion as there are many factors which determine GHI scores. India suffers serious level of hunger, ranks 103 on global hunger index 2018

<ul><li><keyword id="424349" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-hunger">Global Hunger</keyword> has grown continuously from the past three years, says a <keyword id="6355835" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="un">UN</keyword> report.</li><li>And if we do a breakdown of the people who are hungry in the world, 60% of them live in Asia and another 30% lives in Africa.</li><li>UN says that it might be an “immense challenge” to reach the target of zero hunger because more than 820 million people worldwide are still hungry. </li></ul>More than 820 million people in the world are hungry, malnutritioned and suffer from food insecurity, according to <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/detail/15-07-2019-world-hunger-is-still-not-going-down-after-three-years-and-obesity-is-still-growing-un-report" data-type="tilCustomLink">the United Nations.</a> This number grew by 9 million from last year, and has been growing for the last three years. According to the report, Asia had 513.9 million hungry people in 2018 “In Asia, undernourishment affects 11% of the population. Although Southern Asia saw great progress over the last five years, at almost 15%, it is still the subregion with the highest prevalence of undernourishment,” reported the UN. And, the global problem is raging on as well. UN says that it might be an “immense challenge” to reach the target of zero hunger might be an” because more than 820 million people worldwide are still hungry. “Global hunger is not going down. The numbers are still increasing and it is a reversal of a decade of decline,” said Cindy Holeman, FAO, co-author of the SOFI report. Africa and Asia — a home to three quarters of obese children Asia and Africa account for the highest share of malnutrition in the world. Nine out of ten stunted children and nine out of all wasted children globally live in either Asia or Africa. “If we do a breakdown of the people who are hungry in the world, 60% of them live in Asia and another 30% lives in Africa,” says Cindy. These two continents also have nearly three quarters of all obese children in the world, thanks to unhealthy diets. Africa is hit the most by hunger and the levels are increasing slowly and steadily in all subregions. The situation is graver in Eastern Africa. Lack of healthy food is affecting growth as well. The report notes that as many as 2 billion people suffer from food insecurity. Moreover, 21.9% of children under the age of 5 are affected by stunting whereas 7.3% of children (under 5) are affected by wasting. On the flip, there are 338 million school-age children and adolescents who are overweight and one in every eight adults suffer from obesity. “We must foster pro-poor and inclusive structural transformation, focusing on people and placing communities at the centre to reduce economic vulnerabilities and set ourselves on track to ending hunger, food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition,” says UN.

Asia has 60% of the hungry people in the world, says UN

<ul><li>The three greatest risks to the human health — undernutrition, obesity, and climate change — are rising because of common reasons, said a <keyword id="3270373" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lancet-report">Lancet report</keyword>. </li><li>The cost of undernutrition in Africa and Asia ranges from 4% to 11% of GDP. India is also suffering from Global Syndemic. </li><li>The fossil fuel and food industries, partly responsible for driving The Global Syndemic, receive more than $5 trillion in annual subsidies from governments. </li></ul>The three greatest threats to the human health around the world include undernutrition, obesity, and climate change, affecting most people and every country, warned a recent study by Lancet.K According to the report, the three ‘pandemics’ of under-nutrition, obesity and climate change, which it terms as a ‘syndemic’ are in part due to food and agriculture policies, transportation, urban design, land use system and subsidies provided to big food corporations and fossil fuel industry across many countries. “The fossil fuel and food industries that are responsible for driving ‘The Global Syndemic’ receive more than $5 trillion in annual subsidies from governments,” the report said. The report, "Lancet Commission on Obesity," studied 14 countries including India and recommends governments take on commercial interests and rethink global economic incentives within the food system. The study argues that <keyword id="6378239" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="malnutrition">malnutrition</keyword> in all its forms including undernutrition and obesity is the biggest health risk for humans, and leading cause of premature death globally. Obesity is estimated to affect two billion people globally leading to a death toll of as many as four million people in a year, warned the report. Not just this, it will also cost $2 billion annually to the global economy. And climate change will only worsen under-nutrition and obesity because of increased food insecurity as a result of extreme weather events, droughts, and shifts in agriculture. Foetal and infant under-nutrition is already known to raise the risk of adult obesity. India is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The country is home to almost a third of the world's stunted children, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/one-third-of-the-worlds-stunted-children-live-in-india/articleshow/66875512.cms">according</a> to a Global Nutrition Report. However, the stunting rates under five have fallen globally from 32.6%in 2000 to 22.2% in 2017. Globally, around 155 million children <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/cities/pune/malnutrition-lancet-commission-under-nutrition-obesity-climate-change-5557435/">suffer</a> due to stunting and 52 million are ‘wasted’. The combined cost of malnutrition in Africa and Asia ranges from 4% to 11% of GDP, said the report. Separately, India has also seen a sharp increase in the incidence of diabetes over the past few years. Across the country, around 65 million people were diagnosed with diabetes in 2016 in contrast to 26 million people in 1990. Out of these 65 million people, 35% were also affected by obesity. The frequency of overweight adults also surged to nearly 21% in 2016. "We are already late, sitting at the pinnacle and action is needed at the national level as well as ground level," Shifalika Goenka, Professor at Public Health Foundation of India, told IANS. "We need our own national monitoring framework with specific indicators which help monitor the targets at ground level for drivers of under nutrition, over nutrition and climate change." Meanwhile, a recent World Bank <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/health/obesity-malnutrition-2-sides-of-climate-change/story-hzeWRnuSSaJrsssbhafiDJ.html">report</a> pointed out that 148 million people in India will reside in severe climate change hotspots by 2050. The Lancet study calls for setting up of a Framework Convention on Food Systems (FCFS), similar to global conventions for tobacco control and climate change. And, <a href="http://www.indiantelevision.com/mam/media-and-advertising/ad-campaigns/how-swiggy-witnessed-a-30-per-cent-rise-in-instagram-followers-in-no-time-190310">increased</a> Swiggy's follower count by 30%. Within the first half an hour of making the challenge live, Swiggy got more than 500 entries. And after the first 24 hours, Swiggy had <a href="https://www.exchange4media.com/marketing-news/swiggy-voice-of-hunger-challenge-on-instagram-gets-10000-entries-in-a-day-95018.html">received</a> close to 10,000 entries and increased their follower count by 2000 people.

In this 5-part challenge, the food delivery service got customers to recreate the shape of foods like a Kebab Skewer, Nacho, and Pancakes using the waveform of a voice note.

Their client services director, GD Prasad, then tried to see if he could do the same in his studio. But soon, he explains, “That's when I realised that Instagram's waveform itself is somewhat a simplified 
format of a regular wave form that you see in professional sound recordings and things like that.”
